Abstract:Consider a family of graphs having a fixed girth and a large size. We give an optimal lower asymptotic bound on the number of even cycles of any constant length, as the order of the graphs tends to infinity.

Abstract:Let G be a graph. A subset is a decycling set of G if contains no cycle. A subset is a cycle isolating set of G if contains no cycle. The decycling number and cycle isolation number of G , denoted by and , are the minimum cardinalities of a decycling set and a cycle isolating set of G , respectively. Dross, Montassier and Pinlou (Discrete Appl Math 214:99–107, 2016) conjectured that if G is a planar graph of size m and girth at least g , then . So far, this conjecture remains open. Recently, the authors proposed an analogous conjecture that if G is a connected graph of size m and girth at least g that is different from , then , and they presented a proof for the initial case . In this paper, we further prove that for the cases of girth at least 4, 5 and 6, this conjecture is true. The extremal graphs of results above are characterized.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the cop number of graphs with no, or few, short cycles. We show that when $G$ is graph of girth $g$ and the minimum degree $\delta \geq 2$, then $c(G) = O(n\log(n)(\delta-1)^{-\lfloor \frac{g+1}{4} \rfloor})$ as a function of $n$. This extends work of Frankl and implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that $\delta \geq n^{\frac{2}{g}+\epsilon}$, then $G$ satisfies Meyniel's conjecture, that is $c(G) = O(\sqrt{n})$. Moreover, it implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that there $\delta \geq n^{\epsilon}$, some $\epsilon >0$, while also having girth $g \geq 7$, then there exists an $\alpha>0$ such that $c(G) = O(n^{1-\alpha})$, thereby satisfying the weak Meyniel's conjecture. Of course, this implies similar results for dense graphs with small, that is $O(n^{1-\alpha})$, numbers of short cycles, as each cycle can be broken by adding a single cop.

Abstract:A $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graph is a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$ which does not contain cycles of length $g+1$. Such graphs are known to exist for all parameter pairs $k \geq 3, g \geq 3 $, and we focus on determining the orders $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$ of the smallest $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs. This problem can be viewed as a special case of the previously studied Girth-Pair Problem, the problem of finding the order of a smallest $k$-regular graph in which the length of a smallest even length cycle and the length of a smallest odd length cycle are prescribed. When considering the case of an odd girth $g$, this problem also yields results towards the Cage Problem, the problem of finding the order of a smallest $k$-regular graph of girth $g$. We establish the monotonicity of the function $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$ with respect to increasing $g$, and present universal lower bounds for the values $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$. We propose an algorithm for generating all $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs on $n$ vertices, use this algorithm to determine several of the smaller values $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$, and discuss various approaches to finding smallest $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs within several classes of highly symmetrical graphs.

Large Cycles in Graphs Around Conjectures of Bondy and Jung -- Modifications and Sharpness

Abstract:A number of new sufficient conditions for generalized cycles (large cycles including Hamilton and dominating cycles as special cases) in an arbitrary $k$-connected graph $(k=1,2,...)$ and new lower bounds for the circumference (the length of a longest cycle) are derived, inspiring a number of modifications of famous conjectures of Bondy (1980) and Jung (2001). All results (both old and new) are shown to be best possible in a sense based on three types of sharpness indicating the intervals in which the result is sharp and the intervals in which the result can be further improved. In addition, the presented modifications cannot be derived directly from Bondy's and Jung's conjectures as special cases.

Abstract:Let $L$ be a set of positive integers. We call a (directed) graph $G$ an $L$\emph{-cycle graph} if all cycle lengths in $G$ belong to $L$. Let $c(L,n)$ be the maximum number of cycles possible in an $n$-vertex $L$-cycle graph (we use $\vec{c}(L,n)$ for the number of cycles in directed graphs). In the undirected case we show that for any fixed set $L$, we have $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n^{\lfloor k/\ell \rfloor})$ where $k$ is the largest element of $L$ and $2\ell$ is the smallest even element of $L$ (if $L$ contains only odd elements, then $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n)$ holds.) We also give a characterization of $L$-cycle graphs when $L$ is a single element. In the directed case we prove that for any fixed set $L$ we have $\vec{c}(L,n)=(1+o(1))(\frac{n-1}{k-1})^{k-1}$, where $k$ is the largest element of $L$. We determine the exact value of $\vec{c}(\{k\},n)$ for every $k$ and characterize all graphs attaining this maximum.

Abstract:Bondy and Vince showed that every graph with minimum degree at least three contains two cycles of lengths differing by one or two. We prove the following average degree counterpart that every n ‐vertex graph G with at least 5 2 ( n − 1 ) edges, unless 4 | ( n − 1 ) and every block of G is a clique K 5 , contains two cycles of consecutive even lengths. Our proof is mainly based on structural analysis, and a crucial step which may be of independent interest shows that the same conclusion holds for every 3‐connected graph with at least six vertices. This solves a special case of a conjecture of Verstraëte. The quantitative bound is tight and also provides the optimal extremal number for cycles of length two modulo four.

The maximum number of odd cycles in a planar graph

Abstract:How many copies of a fixed odd cycle, $C_{2m+1}$, can a planar graph contain? We answer this question asymptotically for $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ and prove a bound which is tight up to a factor of $3/2$ for all other values of $m$. This extends the prior results of Cox--Martin and Lv et al. on the analogous question for even cycles. Our bounds result from a reduction to the following maximum likelihood question: which probability mass $\mu$ on the edges of some clique maximizes the probability that $m$ edges sampled independently from $\mu$ form either a cycle or a path?

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 3, Page 2416-2428, September 2024. In 1984, Erdős conjectured that the number of pentagons in any triangle-free graph on [math] vertices is at most [math], which is sharp by the balanced blow-up of a pentagon. This was proved by Grzesik, and independently by Hatami et al. As an extension of this result for longer cycles, we prove that for each odd [math], the balanced blow-up of [math] (uniquely) maximizes the number of [math]-cycles among [math]-free graphs on [math] vertices, as long as [math] is sufficiently large. We also show that this is no longer true if [math] is not assumed to be sufficiently large. Our result strengthens results of Grzesik and Kielak who proved that for each odd [math], the balanced blow-up of [math] maximizes the number of [math]-cycles among graphs with a given number of vertices and no odd cycles of length less than [math]. We further show that if [math] and [math] are odd and [math] is sufficiently large compared to [math], then the balanced blow-up of [math] does not asymptotically maximize the number of [math]-cycles among [math]-free graphs on [math] vertices. This disproves a conjecture of Grzesik and Kielak.

Abstract:Liu and Ma [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2018] conjectured that every $2$-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $\lceil k/2\rceil $ cycles with consecutive odd lengths. In particular, they showed that this conjecture holds when $k$ is even. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for any $k\in \mathbb N$. Moreover, we also improve some previous results about cycles of consecutive lengths.

Abstract:Erdős and Simonovits asked the following question: For an integer $r\geq 2$ and a family of non-bipartite graphs $\mathcal{H}$, what is the tight bound of $\alpha$ such that any $\mathcal{H}$-free $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $\alpha n$ has chromatic number at most $r$? We answer this question for $r=2$ and any family of odd cycles. Let $l\le k$ and $n\ge 1000k^{8}$ be positive integers. Let ${\mathcal C}$ be a family of odd cycles, $C_{2l+1}$ be the shortest odd cycle not in ${\mathcal C}$, and $C_{2k+1}$ be the longest odd cycle in ${\mathcal C}$. Let $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ denote the graph obtained by taking $2l+1$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_{\frac{n}{2(2l+1)},\frac{n}{2(2l+1)}}$ and selecting a vertex in each of them such that these vertices form a cycle of length $2l+1$. Let $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$ denote the balanced blow up of $C_{2k+3}$ with $n$ vertices. Note that both $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ and $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$ are $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graphs. We show that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free graph with $\delta(G)>\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}$, then $G$ is bipartite. The bound is tight evident by $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ and $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$. Moreover, the only $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graph with minimum degree $\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}=\frac{n}{2(2l+1)}$ is $BC_{2l+1}(n)$, and the the only $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graph with minimum degree $\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}=\frac{2}{2k+3}n$ is $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$. Our result also unifies stability results of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, Häggkvist and Yuan and Peng for large $n$.

Abstract:Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms and Applications, Ahead of Print. We introduce the cycle intersection graph of a graph, an adaptation of the cycle graph of a graph, and use the structure of these graphs to prove an upper bound for the decycling number of all even graphs. This bound is shown to be significantly better when an even graph admits a cycle decomposition in which any two cycles intersect in at most one vertex. Links between the cycle rank of the cycle intersection graph of an even graph and the decycling number of the even graph itself are found. The problem of choosing an ideal cycle decomposition is addressed and is presented as an optimization problem over the space of cycle decompositions of even graphs, and we conjecture that the upper bound for the decycling number of even graphs presented in this paper is best possible.

Abstract:Abstract Erdős and Pósa proved in 1965 that there is a duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold if we restrict to odd cycles. However, in 1999, Reed proved an analogue for odd cycles by relaxing packing to half‐integral packing. We prove a far‐reaching generalisation of the theorem of Reed; if the edges of a graph are labelled by finitely many abelian groups, then there is a duality between the maximum size of a half‐integral packing of cycles whose values avoid a fixed finite set for each abelian group and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all such cycles. A multitude of natural properties of cycles can be encoded in this setting, for example, cycles of length at least , cycles of length modulo , cycles intersecting a prescribed set of vertices at least times and cycles contained in given ‐homology classes in a graph embedded on a fixed surface. Our main result allows us to prove a duality theorem for cycles satisfying a fixed set of finitely many such properties.

Longest cycles in vertex-transitive and highly connected graphs

Abstract:We present progress on two old conjectures about longest cycles in graphs. The first conjecture, due to Thomassen from 1978, states that apart from a finite number of exceptions, all connected vertex-transitive graphs contain a Hamiltonian cycle. The second conjecture, due to Smith from 1984, states that for $r\ge 2$ in every $r$-connected graph any two longest cycles intersect in at least $r$ vertices. In this paper, we prove a new lemma about the intersection of longest cycles in a graph which can be used to improve the best known bounds towards both of the aforementioned conjectures: First, we show that every connected vertex-transitive graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\Omega(n^{13/21})$, improving on $\Omega(n^{3/5})$ from [De Vos, arXiv:2302:04255, 2023]. Second, we show that in every $r$-connected graph with $r\geq 2$, any two longest cycles meet in at least $\Omega(r^{5/8})$ vertices, improving on $\Omega(r^{3/5})$ from [Chen, Faudree and Gould, J. Combin. Theory, Ser.~ B, 1998]. Our proof combines combinatorial arguments, computer-search and linear programming.

Abstract:For a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, a graph $G$ is said to be {\it $\mathcal{H}$-free} if $G$ contains no member of $\mathcal{H}$ as an induced subgraph. We let $\tilde{\mathcal{G}}_{3}(\mathcal{H})$ denote the family of connected $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs having minimum degree at least $3$. In this paper, we characterize the non-caterpillar trees $T$ having diameter at least $7$ such that $\tilde{\mathcal{G}}_{3}(\{C_{3},C_{4},T\})$ is a finite family, where $C_{n}$ is a cycle of order $n$.
