Abstract:A number of new sufficient conditions for generalized cycles (large cycles including Hamilton and dominating cycles as special cases) in an arbitrary $k$-connected graph $(k=1,2,...)$ and new lower bounds for the circumference (the length of a longest cycle) are derived, inspiring a number of modifications of famous conjectures of Bondy (1980) and Jung (2001). All results (both old and new) are shown to be best possible in a sense based on three types of sharpness indicating the intervals in which the result is sharp and the intervals in which the result can be further improved. In addition, the presented modifications cannot be derived directly from Bondy's and Jung's conjectures as special cases.

Abstract:For any non-negative integers v>k>i , the generalized Johnson graph, X=J(v,k,i) , is the graph whose vertices are the k -subsets of a v -set, and where any two vertices A and B are adjacent whenever |A∩B|=i . In this note, we prove that if v≥2k and (v,k,i)≠(2k,k,0) , then the odd girth of X is given by: og(X)=2⌈k−iv−2k+2i⌉+1.

Abstract:Let $L$ be a set of positive integers. We call a (directed) graph $G$ an $L$\emph{-cycle graph} if all cycle lengths in $G$ belong to $L$. Let $c(L,n)$ be the maximum number of cycles possible in an $n$-vertex $L$-cycle graph (we use $\vec{c}(L,n)$ for the number of cycles in directed graphs). In the undirected case we show that for any fixed set $L$, we have $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n^{\lfloor k/\ell \rfloor})$ where $k$ is the largest element of $L$ and $2\ell$ is the smallest even element of $L$ (if $L$ contains only odd elements, then $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n)$ holds.) We also give a characterization of $L$-cycle graphs when $L$ is a single element. In the directed case we prove that for any fixed set $L$ we have $\vec{c}(L,n)=(1+o(1))(\frac{n-1}{k-1})^{k-1}$, where $k$ is the largest element of $L$. We determine the exact value of $\vec{c}(\{k\},n)$ for every $k$ and characterize all graphs attaining this maximum.

Abstract:In this paper, the existence and number of non-contractible limit cycles of the Josephson equation $\beta \frac{d^{2}\Phi}{dt^{2}}+(1+\gamma \cos \Phi)\frac{d\Phi}{dt}+\sin \Phi=\alpha$ are studied, where $\phi\in \mathbb S^{1}$ and $(\alpha,\beta,\gamma)\in \mathbb R^{3}$. Concretely, by using some appropriate transformations, we prove that such type of limit cycles are changed to limit cycles of some Abel equation. By developing the methods on limit cycles of Abel equation, we prove that there are at most two non-contractible limit cycles, and the upper bound is sharp. At last, combining with the results of the paper (Chen and Tang, J. Differential Equations, 2020), we show that the sum of the number of contractible and non-contractible limit cycles of the Josephson equation is also at most two, and give the possible configurations of limit cycles when two limit cycles appear.

Kneser graphs are Hamiltonian

Abstract:For integers $k\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2k+1$, the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ has as vertices all $k$-element subsets of an $n$-element ground set, and an edge between any two disjoint sets. It has been conjectured since the 1970s that all Kneser graphs admit a Hamilton cycle, with one notable exception, namely the Petersen graph $K(5,2)$. This problem received considerable attention in the literature, including a recent solution for the sparsest case $n=2k+1$. The main contribution of this paper is to prove the conjecture in full generality. We also extend this Hamiltonicity result to all connected generalized Johnson graphs (except the Petersen graph). The generalized Johnson graph $J(n,k,s)$ has as vertices all $k$-element subsets of an $n$-element ground set, and an edge between any two sets whose intersection has size exactly $s$. Clearly, we have $K(n,k)=J(n,k,0)$, i.e., generalized Johnson graph include Kneser graphs as a special case. Our results imply that all known natural families of vertex-transitive graphs defined by intersecting set systems have a Hamilton cycle, which settles an interesting special case of Lovász' conjecture on Hamilton cycles in vertex-transitive graphs from 1970. Our main technical innovation is to study cycles in Kneser graphs by a kinetic system of multiple gliders that move at different speeds and that interact over time, reminiscent of the gliders in Conway's Game of Life, and to analyze this system combinatorially and via linear algebra.

Abstract:The concept of Gromov hyperbolicity is a geometric concept that leads to a rich general theory. Johnson and Kneser graphs are interesting combinatorial graphs defined from systems of sets. In this work we compute the precise value of the hyperbolicity constant of every Johnson graph. Also, we obtain good bounds on the hyperbolicity constant of every Kneser graph, and in many cases, we even compute its precise value.

Abstract:We present a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method for sampling cycle length in large graphs. Cycles are treated as microstates of a system with many degrees of freedom. Cycle length corresponds to energy such that the length histogram is obtained as the density of states from Metropolis sampling. In many growing networks, mean cycle length increases algebraically with system size. The cycle exponent $\alpha$ is characteristic of the local growth rules and not determined by the degree exponent $\gamma$. For example, $\alpha=0.76(4)$ for the Internet at the Autonomous Systems level.

Graphs with Large Girth and Small Cop Number

Abstract:In this paper we consider the cop number of graphs with no, or few, short cycles. We show that when $G$ is graph of girth $g$ and the minimum degree $\delta \geq 2$, then $c(G) = O(n\log(n)(\delta-1)^{-\lfloor \frac{g+1}{4} \rfloor})$ as a function of $n$. This extends work of Frankl and implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that $\delta \geq n^{\frac{2}{g}+\epsilon}$, then $G$ satisfies Meyniel's conjecture, that is $c(G) = O(\sqrt{n})$. Moreover, it implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that there $\delta \geq n^{\epsilon}$, some $\epsilon >0$, while also having girth $g \geq 7$, then there exists an $\alpha>0$ such that $c(G) = O(n^{1-\alpha})$, thereby satisfying the weak Meyniel's conjecture. Of course, this implies similar results for dense graphs with small, that is $O(n^{1-\alpha})$, numbers of short cycles, as each cycle can be broken by adding a single cop.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 3, Page 2416-2428, September 2024. In 1984, Erdős conjectured that the number of pentagons in any triangle-free graph on [math] vertices is at most [math], which is sharp by the balanced blow-up of a pentagon. This was proved by Grzesik, and independently by Hatami et al. As an extension of this result for longer cycles, we prove that for each odd [math], the balanced blow-up of [math] (uniquely) maximizes the number of [math]-cycles among [math]-free graphs on [math] vertices, as long as [math] is sufficiently large. We also show that this is no longer true if [math] is not assumed to be sufficiently large. Our result strengthens results of Grzesik and Kielak who proved that for each odd [math], the balanced blow-up of [math] maximizes the number of [math]-cycles among graphs with a given number of vertices and no odd cycles of length less than [math]. We further show that if [math] and [math] are odd and [math] is sufficiently large compared to [math], then the balanced blow-up of [math] does not asymptotically maximize the number of [math]-cycles among [math]-free graphs on [math] vertices. This disproves a conjecture of Grzesik and Kielak.

Abstract:We study the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues over a collection of matrices associated with a graph. Lower bounds are derived based on the existence or non-existence of certain cycle(s) in a graph. A key result proves that every Johnson graph has a signed variant with exactly two distinct eigenvalues. We also explore applications to weighing matrices, linear ternary codes, tight frames, and compute the minimum rank of Johnson graphs. Further results involve the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues for graphs in association schemes, distance-regular graphs, and Hamming graphs. We also draw some connections with simplicial complexes and higher-order Laplacians.

Longest cycles in vertex-transitive and highly connected graphs

Abstract:We present progress on two old conjectures about longest cycles in graphs. The first conjecture, due to Thomassen from 1978, states that apart from a finite number of exceptions, all connected vertex-transitive graphs contain a Hamiltonian cycle. The second conjecture, due to Smith from 1984, states that for $r\ge 2$ in every $r$-connected graph any two longest cycles intersect in at least $r$ vertices. In this paper, we prove a new lemma about the intersection of longest cycles in a graph which can be used to improve the best known bounds towards both of the aforementioned conjectures: First, we show that every connected vertex-transitive graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\Omega(n^{13/21})$, improving on $\Omega(n^{3/5})$ from [De Vos, arXiv:2302:04255, 2023]. Second, we show that in every $r$-connected graph with $r\geq 2$, any two longest cycles meet in at least $\Omega(r^{5/8})$ vertices, improving on $\Omega(r^{3/5})$ from [Chen, Faudree and Gould, J. Combin. Theory, Ser.~ B, 1998]. Our proof combines combinatorial arguments, computer-search and linear programming.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and $S$ a subset of vertices of $G$; the boundary of $S$ is the set, $\partial S$, of edges of $G$ connecting $ S $ to its complement in $G$. The isoperimetric number of $G$, is the minimum of $\left| \partial S \right|/\left| S \right|$ overall $S \subset V(G)$ of at most $n/2$ vertices. Let $k \le n$ be positive integers. The Johnson graph is the graph, $J(n,k)$, whose vertices are all the subsets of size $k$ of $\{1,\dots,n\}$, two of which are adjacent if their intersection has cardinality equal to $k-1$. In this paper we show that the asymptotic value of the isoperimetric number of the Johnson graph $J(n,2)$ is equal to $ (2-\sqrt{2})n$.

Abstract:Inspired by Sheehan’s conjecture that no 4 4 -regular graph contains exactly one hamiltonian cycle, we prove results on hamiltonian cycles in regular graphs and nearly regular graphs. We fully disprove a conjecture of Haythorpe on the minimum number of hamiltonian cycles in regular hamiltonian graphs, thereby extending a result of Zamfirescu, as well as correct and complement Haythorpe’s computational enumerative results from [Exp. Math. 27 (2018), no. 4, 426–430]. Thereafter, we use the Lovász Local Lemma to extend Thomassen’s independent dominating set method. This extension allows us to find a second hamiltonian cycle that inherits linearly many edges from the first hamiltonian cycle. Regarding the limitations of this method, we answer a question of Haxell, Seamone, and Verstraete, and settle the first open case of a problem of Thomassen by showing that for k ∈ { 5 , 6 } k \in \{5, 6\} there exist infinitely many k k -regular hamiltonian graphs having no independent dominating set with respect to a prescribed hamiltonian cycle. Motivated by an observation of Aldred and Thomassen, we prove that for every κ ∈ { 2 , 3 } \kappa \in \{ 2, 3 \} and any positive integer k k , there are infinitely many non-regular graphs of connectivity κ \kappa containing exactly one hamiltonian cycle and in which every vertex has degree 3 3 or 2 k 2k .

The maximum number of odd cycles in a planar graph

Abstract:How many copies of a fixed odd cycle, $C_{2m+1}$, can a planar graph contain? We answer this question asymptotically for $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ and prove a bound which is tight up to a factor of $3/2$ for all other values of $m$. This extends the prior results of Cox--Martin and Lv et al. on the analogous question for even cycles. Our bounds result from a reduction to the following maximum likelihood question: which probability mass $\mu$ on the edges of some clique maximizes the probability that $m$ edges sampled independently from $\mu$ form either a cycle or a path?

Abstract:This is an expository paper. A $1$-cycle in a graph is a set $C$ of edges such that every vertex is contained in an even number of edges from $C$. E.g., a cycle in the sense of graph theory is a $1$-cycle, but not vice versa. It is easy to check that the sum (modulo $2$) of $1$-cycles is a $1$-cycle. In this text we study the following problems: to find $\bullet$ the number of all 1-cycles in a given graph; $\bullet$ a small number of 1-cycles in a given graph such that any 1-cycle is the sum of some of them. We also consider generalizations (of these problems) to graphs with symmetry, and to $2$-cycles in $2$-dimensional hypergraphs.

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.
