Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and $S$ a subset of vertices of $G$; the boundary of $S$ is the set, $\partial S$, of edges of $G$ connecting $ S $ to its complement in $G$. The isoperimetric number of $G$, is the minimum of $\left| \partial S \right|/\left| S \right|$ overall $S \subset V(G)$ of at most $n/2$ vertices. Let $k \le n$ be positive integers. The Johnson graph is the graph, $J(n,k)$, whose vertices are all the subsets of size $k$ of $\{1,\dots,n\}$, two of which are adjacent if their intersection has cardinality equal to $k-1$. In this paper we show that the asymptotic value of the isoperimetric number of the Johnson graph $J(n,2)$ is equal to $ (2-\sqrt{2})n$.
Combinatorics
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to determine the asymptotic value of the isoperimetric number of the Johnson graph \(J(n, 2)\). Specifically, the authors show that the asymptotic value of the isoperimetric number of \(J(n, 2)\) is \((2-\sqrt{2})n\). ### Problem Background 1. **Definition of Isoperimetric Number**: Let \(G\) be a graph with \(n\) vertices, and let \(S\subseteq V(G)\) be a subset of vertices of \(G\). The boundary \(\partial S\) of \(S\) is the set of edges connecting \(S\) and its complement \(S^{c}\). The isoperimetric number \(\text{iso}(G)\) is defined as: \[ \text{iso}(G):=\min\left\{\frac{|\partial S|}{|S|}:S\subseteq V(G)\text{ and }0 < |S|\leq\frac{n}{2}\right\} \] 2. **Johnson Graph \(J(n,k)\)**: The vertex set of the Johnson graph \(J(n,k)\) is all \(k\)-subsets of the set \(\{1, 2,\ldots,n\}\), and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the size of their intersection is \(k - 1\). ### Main Results The main result of the paper is to prove that the asymptotic value of the isoperimetric number of \(J(n, 2)\) is \((2-\sqrt{2})n\), that is: \[ \text{iso}(J(n,2))\sim(2-\sqrt{2})n \] ### Methods and Steps 1. **Results of Ahlswede and Katona**: Ahlswede and Katona pointed out in their theorem that for each \(0 < m\leq\binom{n}{2}\), the minimum boundary value \(B_{J(n,2)}(m)\) of the Johnson graph \(J(n, 2)\) can be achieved by the first \(m\) or the last \(m\) vertices (in lexicographic order). 2. **Concept of Stable Set**: A stable set is a subset of vertices that satisfies certain conditions, such that adding certain vertices still keeps it stable and does not increase the ratio of the boundary to the number of vertices. 3. **Asymptotic Analysis**: Through a series of lemmas and calculations, the authors prove that as \(n\) tends to infinity, the isoperimetric number of \(J(n, 2)\) approaches \((2-\sqrt{2})n\). ### Conclusion Through strict mathematical derivations and asymptotic analysis, this paper proves that the asymptotic value of the isoperimetric number of \(J(n, 2)\) is \((2-\sqrt{2})n\), and this result is of great significance for understanding the structure and properties of the Johnson graph.
