Abstract:Let $G$ be a cyclically $5$-connected cubic graph with a $5$-edge-cut separating $G$ into two cyclic components $G_1$ and $G_2$. We prove that each component $G_i$ can be completed to a cyclically $5$-connected cubic graph by adding three vertices, unless $G_i$ is a cycle of length five. Our work extends similar results by Andersen et al. for cyclic connectivity $4$ from 1988.

Abstract:A 3-connected cubic graph is cyclically 4-connected if it has at least n≥8 vertices and when removal of a set of three edges results in a disconnected graph, only one component has cycles. By introducing the notion of cycle spread to quantify the distance between pairs of edges, we get a new characterization of cyclically 4-connected graphs. Let Qn and Vn denote the ladder and Möbius ladder on n≥8 vertices, respectively. We prove that a 3-connected cubic graph G is cyclically 4-connected if and only if G is either the Petersen graph, Qn or Vn for n≥8 , or G is obtained from Q8 or Q10 by bridging pairs of edges with cycle spread at least (1,2) . The concept of cycle spread also naturally leads to methods for constructing cyclically k -connected cubic graphs from smaller ones, but for k≥5 the method is not exhaustive.

Abstract:Let SCC3(G) be the length of a shortest 3-cycle cover of a bridgeless cubic graph G. It is proved in this note that if G contains no circuit of length 5 (an improvement of Jackson's (JCTB 1994) result: if G has girth at least 7) and if all 5-circuits of G are disjoint (a new upper bound of SCC3(G) for the special class of graphs).

Abstract:Partial cubes are graphs isometrically embeddable into hypercubes. We analyze how isometric cycles in partial cubes behave and derive that every partial cube of girth more than 6 must have vertices of degree less than 3. As a direct corollary we get that every regular partial cube of girth more than 6 is an even cycle. Along the way we prove that every partial cube $G$ with girth more than 6 is a tree-zone graph and therefore $2n(G)-m(G)-i(G)+ce(G)=2$ holds, where $i(G)$ is the isometric dimension of $G$ and $ce(G)$ its convex excess.

Abstract:A graph is said to be uniquely hamiltonian if it has a unique hamiltonian cycle. For a natural extension of this concept to infinite graphs, we find all uniquely hamiltonian vertex‐transitive graphs with finitely many ends, and also discuss some examples with infinitely many ends. In particular, we show each nonabelian free group F n has a Cayley graph of degree 2 n + 2 that has a unique hamiltonian circle. (A weaker statement had been conjectured by Georgakopoulos.) Furthermore, we prove that these Cayley graphs of F n are outerplanar.

Abstract:Let G be a graph. A subset is a decycling set of G if contains no cycle. A subset is a cycle isolating set of G if contains no cycle. The decycling number and cycle isolation number of G , denoted by and , are the minimum cardinalities of a decycling set and a cycle isolating set of G , respectively. Dross, Montassier and Pinlou (Discrete Appl Math 214:99–107, 2016) conjectured that if G is a planar graph of size m and girth at least g , then . So far, this conjecture remains open. Recently, the authors proposed an analogous conjecture that if G is a connected graph of size m and girth at least g that is different from , then , and they presented a proof for the initial case . In this paper, we further prove that for the cases of girth at least 4, 5 and 6, this conjecture is true. The extremal graphs of results above are characterized.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 2721-2749, December 2024. In 1959, Erdős and Gallai proved that every graph [math] with average vertex degree [math] contains a cycle of length at least [math]. We provide an algorithm that for [math], in time [math] decides whether a 2-connected [math]-vertex graph [math] contains a cycle of length at least [math]. This resolves an open problem explicitly mentioned in several papers. The main ingredients of our algorithm are new graph-theoretical results interesting on their own.

Abstract:Finite connected cubic symmetric graphs of girth 6 have been classified by K. Kutnar and D. Marušič, in particular, each of these graphs has an abelian automorphism group with two orbits on the vertex set. In this paper all cubic symmetric graphs with the latter property are determined. In particular, with the exception of the graphs K_4, K_{3,3}, Q_3, GP(5,2), GP(10,2), F40 and GP(24,5), all the obtained graphs are of girth 6.

Abstract:For a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, a graph $G$ is said to be {\it $\mathcal{H}$-free} if $G$ contains no member of $\mathcal{H}$ as an induced subgraph. We let $\tilde{\mathcal{G}}_{3}(\mathcal{H})$ denote the family of connected $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs having minimum degree at least $3$. In this paper, we characterize the non-caterpillar trees $T$ having diameter at least $7$ such that $\tilde{\mathcal{G}}_{3}(\{C_{3},C_{4},T\})$ is a finite family, where $C_{n}$ is a cycle of order $n$.

Abstract:The theory of voltage graphs has become a standard tool in the study graphs admitting a semiregular group of automorphisms. We introduce the notion of a cyclic generalised voltage graph to extend the scope of this theory to graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphism that may not be semiregular. We use this new tool to classify all cubic graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three vertex-orbits and we characterise vertextransitivity for each of these classes. In particular, we show that a cubic vertex-transitive graph admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three orbits on vertices either belongs to one of 5 infinite families or is isomorphic to the well-know Tutte-Coxeter graph.

Merker showed that for any , and for any even . He conjectured that for any . This conjecture was disproved by Zamfirescu, who gave an infinite family of counterexamples for every even whose graphs have no cycle length in , i.e., for any even . However, the exact value of was only known for , and it is a natural problem to determine for . In this paper, we improve Merker's upper bound, and give the exact value of for every . We show that , , , and for any or . For general 3-connected planar graphs, Merker conjectured that there exists some positive integer such that for any positive integer . We give a complete positive answer to this conjecture. We prove that for any , , and for any .

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every 3-connected claw-free graph such that every induced cycle of length at least 4 has at most 8 edges contained in a triangle is hamiltonian. This implies that every 3-connected $\{K_{1,3}\}\cup \{C_i|i\ge 9\}$-free graph is hamiltonian. We also show that every 3-connected o-heavy graph whose induced cycle of length is at most 8 is hamiltonian and that every 2-connected claw-free graph of longest induced cycle with length at least $n-2$ is hamiltonian. These results are all best possible. As a byproduct, we show that it is NP-complete to determine the length of a longest induced cycle of a line graph.

Longest cycles in vertex-transitive and highly connected graphs

Abstract:We present progress on two old conjectures about longest cycles in graphs. The first conjecture, due to Thomassen from 1978, states that apart from a finite number of exceptions, all connected vertex-transitive graphs contain a Hamiltonian cycle. The second conjecture, due to Smith from 1984, states that for $r\ge 2$ in every $r$-connected graph any two longest cycles intersect in at least $r$ vertices. In this paper, we prove a new lemma about the intersection of longest cycles in a graph which can be used to improve the best known bounds towards both of the aforementioned conjectures: First, we show that every connected vertex-transitive graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\Omega(n^{13/21})$, improving on $\Omega(n^{3/5})$ from [De Vos, arXiv:2302:04255, 2023]. Second, we show that in every $r$-connected graph with $r\geq 2$, any two longest cycles meet in at least $\Omega(r^{5/8})$ vertices, improving on $\Omega(r^{3/5})$ from [Chen, Faudree and Gould, J. Combin. Theory, Ser.~ B, 1998]. Our proof combines combinatorial arguments, computer-search and linear programming.

Semicubic cages and small graphs of even girth from voltage graphs

Abstract:An \emph{$(3,m;g)$ semicubic graph} is a graph in which all vertices have degrees either $3$ or $m$ and fixed girth $g$. In this paper, we construct families of semicubic graphs of even girth and small order using two different techniques. The first technique generalizes a previous construction which glues cubic cages of girth $g$ together at remote vertices (vertices at distance at least $g/2$). The second technique, the main content of this paper, produces bipartite semicubic $(3,m; g)$-graphs with fixed even girth $g = 4t$ or $4t+2$ using voltage graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{m}$. When $g = 4t+2$, the graphs have two vertices of degree $m$, while when $g = 4t$ they have exactly three vertices of degree $m$ (the remaining vertices are of degree $3$ in both cases). Specifically, we describe infinite families of semicubic graphs $(3,m; g)$ for $g = \{6, 8, 10, 12\}$ for infinitely many values of $m$. The cases $g = \{6,8\}$ include the unique $6$-cage and the unique $8$-cage when $m = 3$. The families obtained in this paper for girth $g=\{10,12\}$ include examples with the best known bounds for semicubic graphs $(3,m; g)$

Abstract:In this note it is proven that there exist infinitely many positive integers a and b such that the Cartesian product of a directed cycle of length 2 a and a directed cycle of length 2 b is non‐Hamiltonian. In particular, the Cartesian product of an 880‐dicycle and a 4368‐dicycle is non‐Hamiltonian. We also prove that there is no such graph on fewer than 880 ⋅ 4368 = 3 , 843 , 840 vertices, which is rather astonishing.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma(n,k)$ be the set of $2$-connected $n$-vertex graphs containing an edge that is not on any cycle of length at least $k+1.$ Let $g_s(n,k)$ denote the maximum number of $s$-cliques in a graph in $\Gamma(n,k).$ Recently, Ji and Ye [SIAM J. Discrete Math., 37 (2023) 917-924] determined $g_s(n,k).$ They remark that it is interesting to characterize the extremal graphs. In this paper, we give such a characterization.

Abstract:There is a rich history of studying the existence of cycles in planar graphs. The famous Tutte theorem on the Hamilton cycle states that every 4-connected planar graph contains a Hamilton cycle. Later on, Thomassen (1983), Thomas and Yu (1994) and Sanders (1996) respectively proved that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $n-1, n-2$ and $n-3$. Chen, Fan and Yu (2004) further conjectured that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for $\ell\in\{n,n-1,\ldots,n-25\}$ and they verified that $\ell\in \{n-4, n-5, n-6\}$. When we remove the ``4-connected" condition, how to guarantee the existence of a long cycle in a planar graph? A natural question asks by adding a spectral radius condition: What is the smallest constant $C$ such that for sufficiently large $n$, every graph $G$ of order $n$ with spectral radius greater than $C$ contains a long cycle in a planar graph? In this paper, we give a stronger answer to the above question. Let $G$ be a planar graph with order $n\geq 1.8\times 10^{17}$ and $k\leq \lfloor\log_2(n-3)\rfloor-8$ be a non-negative integer, we show that if $\rho(G)\geq \rho(K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1}))$ then $G$ contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for every $\ell\in \{n-k, n-k-1, \ldots, 3\}$ unless $G\cong K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1})$.
