Polymer Composites
Abstract:
A study on tensile behavior of composites reinforced with triaxial and quadriaxial warp‐knitted glass fabrics were carried out in 0°, 45°, and 90° directions at temperature of −30°C, 0°C, 20°C, and 40°C. The stress‐strain character, normalized strength, normalized modulus, failure strain, and the relationships between strength and temperature were also obtained. The failure mechanism was also analyzed based on the fracture mode and scanning electron microscopy morphology of composites. In addition, to obtain influence related with reinforcement structure, the tensile behavior of the quadriaxial warp‐knitted composite was simulated on the basis of unit cell model and compared with the experimental one. Results show that the tensile properties were decreased with the increase of temperature. The ultimate normalized strength of triaxial and quadriaxial warp‐knitted composites were decreased by 14.18% and 18.13%. The fracture morphology was consistent with the simulation ones.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the influence of temperature on the tensile properties of multi - axial warp - knitted composites. Specifically, through experimental and numerical simulation methods, the author explored the tensile behavior and the change of mechanical properties of tri - axial and tetra - axial warp - knitted glass fiber - reinforced composites in the 0°, 45° and 90° directions under different temperature conditions (- 30°C, 0°C, 20°C, and 40°C). The research also includes analyzing the fracture mechanism of the composites, and this analysis is supported by observing the fracture mode and microscopic morphology of the composites through a scanning electron microscope. In addition, in order to explore the influence of the reinforcement structure, the tensile behavior of tetra - axial warp - knitted composites was numerically simulated based on the unit cell model and compared with the experimental results. The main findings of the paper include: - The tensile properties decrease as the temperature rises, among which the ultimate normalized strengths of the tri - axial and tetra - axial warp - knitted composites decrease by 14.18% and 18.13% respectively. - The fracture morphology is consistent with the simulation results, indicating that the simulation method can effectively predict the mechanical behavior of the composites. - The influence of temperature on the tensile properties of the composites is mainly reflected in the softening of the matrix resin, which leads to the weakening of the interfacial bonding force and then affects the overall mechanical properties of the composites. These findings are of great significance for understanding how temperature affects the mechanical properties of multi - axial warp - knitted composites, and also provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the design and application of composites.
