Abstract:Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and corrosion-induced mechanical property degradation (CIMPD) of 7050-T7451 aluminum alloy in the solution environment in the presence of Cl - and HSO 3 - are investigated. CIMPD has more severe corrosion and hydrogen damage leading to more severe mechanical degradation as compared to SCC process. Corrosion-induced hydrogen controls the CIMPD of 7050-T7451, accounting for more than 70% elongation degradation as demonstrated by the quantitative method. With the addition of HSO 3 - in the presence of Cl - , the degradation percentage caused by corrosion products, hydrogen, and corrosion damage increases, but the relative contribution is consistent.
