Study of the NWC electrons belt observed on DEMETER Satellite

Abstract:We analyzed observation data collected by the Instrument for the Detection of Particles (IDP) on board of DEMETER satellite during the period of total seventeen months in 2007 and 2008. In the meantime, the VLF transmitter located at NWC ground station was shutdown for seven months and working for total ten months. Our analysis, for the first time, revealed in details the transient properties of the space electrons induced by the man-made VLF wave emitted by the transmitter at NWC. First, we mapped the electron flux distribution and figured out the special range what the NWC belt covered. Then we investigated the NWC electron spectrograms in a wide range of McIlwain parameter (up to L=3.0). Finally, we obtained the averaged energy spectrum of the NWC electrons within the drift loss-cone, and compared the difference during the observations between daytime and nighttime. Our results proved the fact that the VLF emissions from NWC transmitter created momentary electron enhancement with fluxes up to 3 orders of magnitude. These electrons are distributed in the region of 180 degree in longitude and 1.6 ~ 1.9 of L shell. In addition, the VLF emission induced either enhancement or loss of electrons in higher magnetic shells up to L=3, and the maximum loss was up to 60% of the original value. The energy spectra of these electrons revealed that the enhancement during the NWC daytime are more attenuated than those in the NWC nighttime, and that the shape and the cutoff energy of the spectra are also quite different. We will present the results of our analysis, compare it with previous studies, and discuss the agreement of our results with the theory of wave-particle interaction.

Temporal variations of electromagnetic responses in the ionosphere excited by the NWC communication station

Abstract:The characteristic of electromagnetic field anomalies in the ionosphere excited by earthquake has been studied by many researchers using satellite observation data in recent years. This study explores what are the differences of the electromagnetic field anomalies with different ionospheric backgrounds with the help of the known VLF signal transmitted by communication station on the ground, which can be observed by satellite in the ionosphere. VLF electric and magnetic field spectral data from DEMETER satellite is used to analyze the diurnal, seasonal, and annual variations of ionospheric electromagnetic responses from 2005 to 2009, which were excited by the NWC communication station located in Australia. The Maxwell equation in the ionosphere is solved using the transfer matrix method to simulate the propagation characteristics of VLF electromagnetic waves excited by NWC transmitter. Compared with the observation result and simulation result, the electromagnetic response is obtained with different ionospheric backgrounds. The result shows the electric field at daytime is almost 40 dB larger than at nighttime, and the magnetic field is 15 dB. According to the data analysis result, it is found that seasonal and annual variations of the electromagnetic field is not very significant and solar activity has some effect on the response, which is smaller when the solar is more active. The simulation results are consistent with the data analysis. The variation of the response may be caused by the distribution of electron density below 250 km in the ionosphere. If the electron density is higher, the electromagnetic response will be lower. The variation of the electric field is much more obvious than the magnetic field, which means finding earthquake anomalies from electric data of satellite may be more efficient than the magnetic field. Getting precise electron profiles below 250 km will be very helpful for studying the electromagnetic anomalies in the ionosphere related with earthquakes.

Abstract:Very‐low‐frequency (VLF) signals emitted from ground‐based transmitters for submarine communication can penetrate the ionosphere and leak into the magnetosphere, leading to electron precipitation via wave‐particle interaction and thereby providing a potential means for radiation belt remediation. In this study, we systematically analyze the dependence of quasi‐trapped electron fluxes scattered by signals from the North West Cape (NWC) transmitter on electron energy, L‐shell, and geomagnetic activity (i.e., the Dst index) using long‐term measurements from the DEMETER satellite. Considering potentially changed theoretical cyclotron resonant condition, we find that the variations of wave normal angle (WNA) of NWC transmitter signals or of the background electron density can explain the variated "wisp" positions in energy versus L plane. The long‐term data analyzation suggests that the energy‐dependences increases can help to distinguish the different source mechanisms of quasi‐trapped electrons. The enhancement of quasi‐trapped electron fluxes induced by NWC transmitter signals is more obvious at L = 1.8 than L = 1.6 due to higher trapped flux levels and strong pitch angle diffusion induced by transmitter signals.

Preliminary results of the ionospheric high-frequency Doppler shift monitor for the Phase II of Chinese Meridian Project

Abstract:The Phase II of Chinese Meridian Project plans to construct ionospheric Doppler sounding arrays around Mohe, Beijing, Wuhan, and Shenzhen. Each array consists of one transmitter station and three stations equipped with the ionospheric high-frequency Doppler shift monitor, which is described in this paper in terms of system design and preliminary results from its pilot operation. By comparison with a collocated ionosonde, the performance capability of the sounder is validated. At present, the sounders have been installed at seven stations and have been running continuously for about 1 year. This paper presents observations of various ionospheric disturbances caused by solar flare eruptions, travelling ionosphere disturbances, and probable large-scale electric field variations. Once established, the chain of sounder arrays will continuously monitor ionospheric disturbances over eastern China and contribute to the sophisticated space environment monitoring network of the Chinese Meridian Project.
Observations and Simulations of the Peak Response Time of Thermospheric Mass Density to the 27-Day Solar EUV Flux Variation

Abstract:In this study, the mass densities from Challenging Minisatellite Payload and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment satellites and the simulation results from the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) have been used to systematically explore the peak response time (or time delay hereafter) of thermospheric mass density to the 27-day solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux variation. The TIEGCM can generally reproduce the observed time delay of thermospheric mass density to the 27-day solar EUV flux changes. The simulation results suggest that the delay of the peak of thermospheric mass density to that of the 27-day solar EUV flux variation is about 0.9 days. However, geomagnetic activity can significantly affect the derivation of the time delay of thermospheric mass density from the pure solar EUV flux impact. Additionally, the delay of thermospheric mass density to the 27-day solar EUV flux changes with altitude, latitude, and local time.

Abstract:Recent progress in space weather research are briefly presented here from three aspects: establishment or improvement in observation systems, such as extra-soft X-ray detector and γ-ray detector onboard the spacecraft ‘Shen Zhou 2’, new solar radio broad-band spectrometer, magnetometer-chain, ionosonde and digisonde–chain, laser-lidar system and VHF radar; partial topic progresses included in CMEs, multi-streamer structures, evolution of interplanetary magnetic field B z component, regional properties of traveling ionospheric disturbances, a fully-nonlinear global dynamical model for the middle and upper atmosphere, and a combined prediction method for geomagnetic disturbances; and space weather activity, such as ‘Meridian Project’ — a national major scientific project, ‘International Space Weather Meridian Circle Program’ — a suggestion of internationalization of ‘Meridian Project’, ‘Space Weather Research Plan’ — a major research plan from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC) and other space weather activities.
Energetic Particle Radiations Measured by Particle Detector on Board CBERS-1 Satellite

Abstract:Using the data measured by energetic particle detector on board CBERS-01 and-02 for the past five years, statistics was made to show the general features of MeV electrons and protons along a solar synchronous orbit at an altitude of 780 km. This height is in the bottom region of the Earth’s radiation belts. Detectors are inside the satellite cabinet and such continuous monitoring of particle radiation environment inside a satellite has seldom conducted so far. After a proper and careful treatment, it is indicated that the data inside satellite are well correlated with the radiation environment outside. Besides the agreement of the general distribution characteristics of energetic electrons and protons with similar observations from other satellites, attention is particularly paid to the disturbed conditions. Variations of particle fluxes are closely related with solar proton events, in general, electron fluxes of outer belt are well correlated with Dst index after three days’ delay while the electron injection occurred almost at the same day during great magnetic storms. It is confirmed that both energetic electrons and protons appear in the Polar Cap region only after the solar proton events.
Variation of Electron Density in the D-Region Using Kunming MF Radar under Low Solar Activity

Abstract:So far, the least is known about the D-region ionosphere out of the entire ionosphere due to the lack of a conventional detecting method and continuous data accumulation. Medium frequency (MF) radar is an important conventional tool for understanding the D-region ionosphere by measuring the electron density (Ne) within the height range of 60–90 km. To investigate the statistical variation of the D-region, especially at the mid-low latitude area, this study presents the statistical variations in the D-region Ne with the solar zenith angle (SZA), season, and altitude observed by Kunming MF radar (25.6° N, 103.8° E) under low solar activity (2008–2009). The diurnal variation of Ne behaves like typical diurnal changes, which are closely consistent with the SZA. The outstanding feature, the diurnal asymmetry phenomenon, significantly appears in different seasons and at different altitudes. The Ne has obvious semi-annual characteristics, and is larger in summer and fall and the smallest in winter. Compared to other seasons, the variation in the Ne with altitude is the most stable in summer. Due to the impacts of the highest SZA, the value of Ne in winter is the smallest, with a maximum value of less than 300 electrons/cm3, and the largest in summer and fall, with a maximum of 472 electrons/cm3. Particularly, the peaks of Ne above 76 km do not always appear at the time when the SZA is the smallest (at noon). Both the simulations by the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI2016) and observations using MF radar present a strong positive correlation with solar radiation. Meanwhile, it cannot be ignored that there were still large differences between the simulations and observations. To quantitatively analyze the differences between the observations and simulations, the observed value was subtracted from the simulated value. The results show that the maximum value between them was up to 350 electrons/cm3, and the minimum difference appeared at around 72 km, with a value less than 100 electrons/cm3. However, below 66 km, the observations were larger than the simulations, which were, on the contrary, above 76 km.

The physics of solar spectral imaging observations in dm-cm wavelengths and the application on space weather

Abstract:Recently, several new solar radio telescopes have been put into operation and provided spectral-imaging observations with much higher resolutions in decimeter (dm) and centimeter (cm) wavelengths. These telescopes include the Mingantu Spectral Radioheliograph (MUSER, at frequencies of 0.4 - 15 GHz), the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA, at frequencies of 1 - 18 GHz), and the Siberian Radio Heliograph (SRH, at frequencies of 3 - 24 GHz). These observations offer unprecedented opportunities to study solar physics and space weather, especially to diagnose the coronal magnetic fields, reveal the basic nature of solar eruptions and the related non-thermal energy release, particle accelerations and propagation, and the related emission mechanisms. These results might be the important input to the space weather modeling for predicting the occurrence of disastrous powerful space weather events. In order to provide meaningful reference for other solar physicists and space weather researchers, this paper mainly focus on discussing the potential scientific problems of solar radio spectral-imaging observations in dm-cm wavelengths and its possible applications in the field of space weather. These results will provide a helpful reference for colleagues to make full use of the latest and future observation data obtained from the above solar radio telescopes.

Climatology of TEC Longitudinal Difference in Middle Latitudes of East Asia.

Abstract:In this paper, a statistical analysis of the diurnal, seasonal and solar cycle variation in the TEC longitudinal difference in midlatitudes of East Asia is presented using CODE GIMs data in 2015–2019. Moreover, the empirical neutral wind model HWM-14 and geomagnetic field model IGRF-2020 were employed to analyze the influence of geomagnetic configuration-neutral wind mechanism on the TEC longitudinal difference, and the F2 layer peak electron density (NmF2) data from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC) were also used to study the role of local electron density in the TEC longitudinal difference. For the high solar activity year, the results show that east-west TEC longitudinal difference index Re/w is negative in the noon and positive at evening-night. Moreover, the longitudinal difference of daytime TEC is most evident in summer, less in autumn and least in spring and winter, while the nighttime difference is most obvious in equinox, followed by summer and winter during nighttime. The model simulation shows that the TEC longitude difference around noon is mainly caused by the zonal wind-declination mechanism, and a 4-h time delay seems to be an optimal result for the vertical drift velocity to cause the longitudinal TEC difference during pre-noon hours. At night, the uplifting electron flux, which is a product of local electron density and vertical drift velocity, shows a good correlation with Re/w, indicating that the local electron density is also an important factor affecting the TEC longitudinal difference during the nighttime. Moreover, there was about a 3-h time delay between the TEC longitudinal variations and the uplifting electron flux at night. For the low solar activity years, the western TEC is greater than eastern TEC during most of the year except in the summer nighttime. The TEC diurnal variation in the east and west suggested that the nighttime Re/w should be related to other physical process, such as the midlatitude summer nighttime anomaly (MSNA) in the east and the ionospheric nighttime enhancement (INE). The current study provides evidence for the longitudinal difference of NmF2 in East Asian midlatitudes and geomagnetic configuration-neutral wind mechanism proposed in previous studies and finds some new features which need further studying to improve our current understanding of ionospheric longitudinal difference in the low solar activity years. The results provide new insight into TEC longitudinal variations at midlatitudes, and they can contribute to understanding the ionosphere-thermosphere coupling system.

Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis and Modeling of the Topside Ionospheric and Plasmaspheric TECs

Abstract:The topside total electron contents (TECs) observed by the MetOp‐A (above 832 km) and TerraSAR‐X (above 520 km) satellites for multiple local times during 2008–2018 have been used to develop global topside ionospheric and plasmaspheric TEC models, based on empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Gridded TEC maps are first obtained from the original quiet time TECs, and then, they are decomposed into EOF basis modes and associated amplitude coefficients. The EOF analysis well captures the latitudinal, longitudinal, and seasonal variations of the topside ionosphere and plasmasphere, and the associated dependence on solar EUV forcing. The first five EOFs, which can account for more than 98.8% of the total variance, are applied in model construction. The comparison with two empirical models indicates that the EOF TEC models can reproduce the observations well, including TEC magnitudes and longitudinal variations. Moreover, the annual anomaly is obviously seen in the topside TECs. The global averaged TECs are greatest in December and smallest in June. With increasing solar EUV forcing, the global averaged TECs always increase, but the winter hemisphere TECs do not change much and even decrease, especially at night and in the Southern Hemisphere. The overall increasing rate with solar EUV forcing is larger under higher solar activity conditions. The direct plasma diffusion through ionosphere‐plasmasphere coupling may not be able to explain some of the features seen in the topside TECs.
The accuracy improvement of clear-sky surface shortwave radiation derived from CERES SSF dataset with a simulation analysis

Abstract:Towards the Xiaotang region along the northern margin of the China's largest desert, a quantitative assessment of the precision of clear-sky satellite observations (the Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds downward surface shortwave radiation product of Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES), DSSRCER) is conducted, the localized inversion mode of "absolutely clear-sky" downward surface shortwave radiation (DSSR) is established, and the "absolutely clear-sky" DSSR in Xiaotang during 2005-2018 is simulated by the Santa Barbara Discrete Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model. In general, under the "absolutely clear-sky" condition of Xiaotang region, there is a significant error in DSSRCER, and the simulated results of SBDART (DSSRSBD) with same input parameters as DSSRCER is better and more comparable. Single scattering albedo (SSA), asymmetry parameter (ASY) and aerosol optical depth (AOD) play crucial roles in deciding the accuracy of DSSR, and after parameter adjustment, the DSSRSBD is better than the initial, which is improved remarkably with all indexes of the fitting results greatly improved. The temporal variation of the DSSR during 2005-2018 indicates that the highest annual average value is found in 2008 (770.00 W·m-2), while the lowest appears in 2010 (600.97 W·m-2). Besides, the highest seasonal mean DSSR appears in summer, which between 860.6 and 935.07 W·m-2, while reaches the lowest in winter (403.79-587.53 W·m-2). Moreover, the monthly average DSSR changes as a curve with a single peak and is close to normal distribution, the highest appears in June (934.61 W·m-2), while the minimum with the value of 390.34 W·m-2 is found in December. All of the solar elevation angle, the characteristics of climate and aerosol particles in different seasons may contribute to the temporal variation.
Analysis of possible seismo-ionosphere perturbations before the strong sichuan earthquake on may 12, 2008 using DEMETER data

Abstract:There have been a large number of experimental studies concerning the ionoshperic perturbations before earthquakes. These perturbations include variations in electron and ion densities, anomalous electromagnetic emissions at various frequencies and so on. The real physical process of seismo- ionospheric couping is not well known up to now, though many research results have been published [1]. It is an effective way to monitor the ionospheric variations related to seismic activity by satellite observations, and this is the main scientific objective of the French micro-satellite DEMETER, which was launched on June 29, 2004. Its orbit is polar and circular with an altitude of 710 km (changed to 665 km later). The electromagnetic emission in a frequency range from DC to 3.3 MHz can be detected by the scientific payload IMSC (search-coil magnetometer instrument) and ICE (electric field instrument). The electron density and ion density variations are studied by the ISL (Langmuir probe instrument) and IAP (plasma analysis instrument). There are two operation modes: the survey mode which record low bit rate data all around the Earth at invariant latitudes less than ~ 65deg and burst mode which record high bit rate data above seismic regions. Data and plots are available on the web server according to the user's authorization. All data and plots are organized by half-orbits. Some ionospheric variations during earthquakes using DEMETER data have been published in the past few years.

Abstract:The electron density profiles retrieved from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere & Climate (COSMIC) satellite Radio Occultation (RO) observations during 2008 are used to derive ionospheric upper transition height, where the density of O+ is equal to that of light ions (mainly H+ and He+). It is found that the ionosphere upper transition height is very low, with significant local time, latitude and seasonal variations, during the extremely low solar minimum of 2008. The transition height is higher in the daytime than at night, except over middle latitude region of winter hemisphere, where the transition height has minimum in the morning. There is a pronounced peak over equator for all seasons. The transition height is higher in summer than in winter hemisphere. Our results have comparability with C/NOFS satellite observations around the equatorial region during June–August of 2008. However, the IRI model gives much higher transition height than those from COSMIC and cannot reproduce its latitude and season variations well during 2008.

Abstract:The French micro-satellite DEMETER was launched on June 29, 2004 in a polar and circular orbit with an altitude of about 665 km. The main objective of the satellite is to research ionospheric disturbance related to seismic activities. This paper reports the ionospheric anomalies observed by DEMETER within one week before the M-s 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake (31.02 degrees N, 103.37 degrees E) which occurred at 0628UT on May 12, 2008. The observation results include: (1) Electron density, electron temperature and oxygen ion density changed sharply (greater than 20%) near the epicenter four and five days prior to the shock. (2) Increased electromagnetic emissions were registered when the satellite passed the epicenter three and seven days before the shock. A further analysis (calculations of electric and magnetic power spectra, the wave vector direction and polarization sense) of the increased electromagnetic emissions is carried out based on I the three-component electric and magnetic ELF (extremely low frequency, 0 similar to 1250 Hz) data. In addition, the geophysical conditions are also investigated and it can be inferred that the observed anomalies are not likely due to geomagnetic activity. Finally, a possible mechanism which could account for these pre-earthquake ionospheric perturbations is discussed.
Impact of seasonal variations on low and mid-latitudes ionospheric electric field satellite measurements

Abstract:Ionospheric electric field measurements are provided by the Langmuir probe onboard the DEMETER satellite. Because there are four probes, various combinations of them form double probes that yield measurements. However, only the combination of probe antennas (E3) and (E4) enables possible measurements of the ambient (natural) ionospheric electric field. For other combinations, the measured field is almost identical to the induced field resulting from satellite motion. On the basis of this, we conducted comparative studies of the measured and induced electric fields during different seasons (summer, autumn, winter, and spring) to determine the best period for ionospheric electric field measurements. Multiple orbits were selected during different periods when the satellite was exposed to solar radiation. Except in winter, the induced field exhibits the same profile as the measured one, leading to an overestimation of the ambient ionospheric electric field. However, the highest accuracy for the ambient field can be obtained during winter, when solar flux radiation is weaker than that during other seasons. The probe position and orbital altitude also play important roles in the behavior of the induced electric field.

Abstract:This paper investigates ionospheric response characteristics from multiple perspectives based on globally distributed GNSS data and products, ionosonde data, FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 occultation data, and Swarm satellite observations caused by the total solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 across North and Central America. The results show that both GNSS-derived TEC products have detected the ionospheric TEC degradation triggered by the total solar eclipse, with the maximum degradation exceeding 10 TECU. The TEC data from nine GNSS stations in the path of the maximum eclipse reveal that the intensity of ionospheric TEC degradation is related to the spatial location, with the maximum degradation value of the ionospheric TEC being about 14~23 min behind the moment of the maximum eclipse. Additionally, a negative anomaly of foF2 with a maximum of more than 2.7 MHz is detected by ionosonde. In the eclipse region, NmF2 and hmF2 show trends of decrease and increase, with percentages of variation of 40~70% and 4~16%, respectively. The Ne profile of the Swarm-A satellite is significantly lower than the reference value during the eclipse period, with the maximum negative anomaly value reaching 11.2 × 105 el/cm3, and it failed to show the equatorial ionization anomaly.
