Abstract:With a theoretical model which yields ionospheric electric fields, we study the yearly variation of ionospheric electric fields at middle and low latitudes under the condition of low solar and quiet geomagnetic activities. The results show the following characteristics. When the ionospheric electric fields are calculated individually in the Northern (or Southern) Hemisphere without including the influence of the other hemisphere (uncoupled), the electric field in the Northern (or Southern) Hemisphere varies in an obvious annual pattern; when the electric field is calculated simultaneously in both hemispheres including the influence of the other hemispheres (coupled), the electric field varies in a predominantly semiannual pattern. Moreover, quite good consistency was found between the behaviors of semiannual variation calculated by our theoretical electric field model and an empirical model of Richmond et al. (1980).

A Simulation Study on the Latitudinal Variations of Ionospheric Zonal Electric Fields Under Geomagnetically Quiet Conditions

Abstract:The influence of zonal electric fields as well as E x B plasma drifts on the ionosphere has been widely investigated, but the latitudinal variations of zonal electric fields have not been well understood. In this study, we investigate the driving mechanisms responsible for the latitudinal variations of zonal electric fields under geomagnetically quiet conditions using the Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM). A series of case-controlled TIEGCM simulations were conducted to explore the effects of neutral wind and ionospheric conductivity on the latitudinal variations of zonal electric fields. The major results are given as follows: (1) The eastward electric field at noon increases with latitude, which is mainly associated with latitudinal changes of poleward neutral winds. (2) The prominent latitudinal variations of zonal electric fields at sunrise and sunset are attributed to the strong longitudinal gradients of zonal winds, that is, the curl-free mechanism. (3) The changes of the zonal electric fields at a given location are affected by the dynamo effect globally, which also produces the latitudinal structure of zonal electric fields.

Abstract:The scalar potential of the geomagnetic field satisfies the Laplace equation.The Laplace equation can be represented by the sum of spherical harmonics series in the spherical coordinates.By using the method of spherical harmonics analysis,the geomagnetic field can be divided into the inner source field and the outer source field.This paper mainly focuses on:(1) The spherical harmonics analysis method for the Sq current inversion that is used to inverse the Sq space equivalent current system in 1997.We intensively discuss the seasonal variations of Sq phase and magnitude.(2) We establish a geomagnetic diurnal model based on the observational geomagnetic field data in 1997, in which the geomagnetic field varies with latitude and AE index in China.Also,we compare the results from the model and the observations.

Abstract:With a theoretical model of ionospheric electric fields, the yearly variation of ionospheric electric fields at mid- and low-latitudes under the condition of low solar and quiet geomagnetic activities were studied. The main results are as follows: when the ionospheric electric fields are calculated individually in the northern or southern hemisphere without including the influence of the other hemisphere (uncoupled), the electric fields in both hemispheres vary in an obvious annual pattern with an anti-phase; when the electric field was calculated simultaneously in both hemispheres with the influence of the other hemispheres (coupled) included, the electric field varies in a predominant semi-annual pattern. Moreover, quite good consistency was found between the behaviors of semi-annual variation calculated by our theoretical electric field model and an empirical model of Richmond. A simple circuit with the coupling between the northern and southern hemispheres was introduced to interpret the semi-annual variation of electric field. Results from the circuit model reveal that the coupled electric field would show a pronounced semi-annual variation due to the 'coupling effect' along the magnetic field lines between two hemispheres, whereas the uncoupled electric field have an annual variation in respective hemisphere.

Abstract:<p>Solar wind and its embedded interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) affects Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere by changing high-latitude ionospheric convection patter, producing auroral precipitation and depositing energy and momentum at high latitudes. These processes are greatly enhanced during geomagnetically active periods.&#160; The geomagnetic activity induced changes at high latitudes are then transmitted to middle and low latitudes. In this work we employ the recently developed Multiscale Atmosphere-Geospace Environment (MAGE) model to simulate the non-linear electrodynamic and dynamic processes by which solar wind and IMF affect low and middle latitude thermosphere and ionosphere during geomagnetically active periods, including the stream interaction region event that happened in September 2020. &#160;We examine the changes in ionospheric electric fields caused by penetration electric fields and neutral wind dynamo, as well as changes in neutral winds, temperature, composition&#160; and ionospheric plasma densities. Model results are compared with&#160; data from recent satellite mission, including COSMIC 2, GOLD and ICON to obtain new insight in the physical processes in the global thermosphere ionosphere responses to disturbed solar wind and IMF driving conditions.</p>
Modulation of Galactic Cosmic Rays in the Inner Heliosphere over Solar Cycles

Abstract:The 11- and 22-year modulation of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) in the inner heliosphere is studied using a numerical model developed by Qin and Shen in 2017. Based on the numerical solutions of Parker’s transport equations, the model incorporates a modified Parker heliospheric magnetic field, a locally static time-delayed heliosphere, and a time-dependent diffusion coefficients model in which an analytical expression of the variation of magnetic turbulence magnitude throughout the inner heliosphere is applied. Furthermore, during solar maximum, the solar magnetic polarity is determined randomly with the possibility of A > 0 decided by the percentage of the solar north polar magnetic field being outward and the solar south polar magnetic field being inward. The computed results are compared at various energies with several GCR observations, e.g., the Interplanetary Monitoring Platform 8 (IMP 8), EPHIN on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), Ulysses, and Voyager 1 and 2, and they show good agreement. We show that our model has successfully reproduced the 11- and 22-year modulation cycles.

A numerical study of seismic-related electric field in the ionosphere

Abstract:This paper explores the properties of seismic-related DC electric field in the ionosphere based on an electrodynamic model of the lower atmosphere-ionosphere coupling. According to this model, the external electric current is a source of conductivity current perturbation in the atmosphere-ionosphere electric circuit. We develop the model to spherical coordinate and solve it numerically for an inhomogeneous anisotropic conductivity. The results show that the horizontal scale of electric field in the ionosphere is larger than the horizontal scale of external current in the atmosphere. The electric field in the low latitude ionosphere is mostly zonal, and its structure is dipole-like. The external current induced DC electric field in ionosphere is much stronger at night-time than during the day.

Abstract:With a theoretic ionospheric model, we simulate semiannual variations of the ionospheric F2 region peak electron density (NmF2) at mid- and low latitudes under the low solar activity and quiet geomagnetic conditions, and focus on how electric fields modify the semiannual component of NmF2. The result indicates that when the input electric fields have no semiannual variation, the NmF2 at the geomagnetic equator still exhibits some semiannual component, and the amplitudes of the semiannual component. become smaller as the latitude increase. When the input electric fields have a semiannual component to some extent, the amplitudes of the NmF2 semiannual component is strongly modified, and this influence seems to be much different at different magnetic latitudes. It is also found that the modification of electric fields on the NmF2 may have a close relationship with the 'fountain effect' in the equatorial ionosphere.

Abstract:Research of ionospheric electric current density is generally based on some theoretical formulas and empirical models. The electrodynamic process of charged particles in plasma with a magnetic field can help analyze the formation mechanism of ionospheric electric field and current so that the ionospheric electric field intensity and current density can be simulated and studied. Furthermore, by establishing partial differential equations in magnetic dipole coordinates, electric current density in mid- and low-latitude ionosphere can be calculated by means of a series of more reasonable boundary conditions in this article. Besides, the wind drag and particles diffusion are taken into account to make the results more accurate. The electric field value fitted by the empirical model is used to verify the rationality of current density calculated indirectly. Through this theoretical model, the distribution of electric fields and currents in ionosphere has been carefully studied. In addition, several physical elements influencing the current value and direction are also studied, including external environmental factors, such as solar activity and geomagnetic index, as well as the internal factors, such as electrons and ions temperature. These works will be a great help in the future for the precise determination of ionospheric currents.

Abstract:The cold-dense plasma sheet (CDPS) plays an important role in the entry process of the solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere. Investigating the seasonal variation of CDPS occurrences will help us better understand the long-term variation of plasma exchange between the solar wind and magnetosphere, but any seasonal variation of CDPS occurrences has not yet been reported in the literature. In this paper, we investigate the seasonal variation of the occurrence rate of CDPS using Geotail data from 1996 to 2015 and find a semiannual variation of the CDPS occurrences. Given the higher probability of solar wind entry under stronger northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions, 20 years of IMF data (1996-2015) are used to investigate the seasonal variation of IMF B-z under northward IMF conditions. We find a semiannual variation of IMF B-z, which is consistent with the Russell-McPherron (R-M) effect. We therefore suggest that the semiannual variation of CDPS may be related to the R-M effect.

Abstract:The longitudinal variations of the middle latitude ionosphere are investigated on the basis of in situ electron density observations from the Planar Langmuir Probe onboard the Challenging Minisatellite Payload satellite. This study specifically focused on the longitudinal variations of the ionosphere at geographic latitudes of 40 degrees in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The longitudinal variations of the ionosphere are decomposed into the spatial modes and corresponding temporal evolutions by employing the principal component analysis method, and an associated empirical model is developed. The model results indicate a significant seasonal and local time dependence of the longitudinal variation, which is obviously different in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Our preliminary analysis suggests that the interaction between the geomagnetic fields and the thermospheric winds results in the longitudinal variations in the ionosphere at the middle latitudes. In addition, the relative contributions of zonal and meridional winds are further discussed. Plain Language Summary Longitudinal variations of the mid-latitude ionosphere attract the interests of researchers, but the mechanisms are not fully addressed. In this work, the electron densities of in situ observations from the Challenging Minisatellite Payload satellite are used to investigate the longitudinal variations of the mid-latitude ionosphere climatically. These longitudinal variations are decomposed into spatial modes and temporal evolutions based on the principal component analysis method. We develop an empirical model to quantify the longitudinal structure at a specified condition. The most dominant variabilities in the mid-latitude ionosphere as a function of local times and seasons, associated with the hemisphere asymmetry, are well reproduced by the newly developed model. Our preliminary analysis indicates that the neutral winds dragging electrons along the geomagnetic field are the main driving source of the longitudinal evolution in the middle latitude ionosphere.

Abstract:We present a three-dimensional numerical model of large-scale ionospheric electron density and temperature modulation by powerful electromagnetic waves by incorporating the transport equations and the three-dimensional ray-tracing algorithm. Based on this numerical model, the changes of ionospheric electron density and temperature at nighttime are investigated. The simulation results present (1) the ionospheric electron temperature enhancement due to the energy absorption; (2) the ionospheric electron density depletion at the reflection region and enhancement at the upper/lower region along the field line due to the thermal pressure; and (3) large-scale field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) due to the thermal self-focusing instability with transverse scale of similar to 10km. The results are quantitatively consistent with the previous theoretical predictions and experimental observations, which indicate that the thermal processes play an important role in the ionospheric electron density/temperature modulation and large-scale FAI generation.
The hemispheric asymmetry of ionospheric lunitidal signatures during Sudden Stratospheric Warmings in the eastern Asian and American sectors

Abstract:<p>During Sudden Stratospheric Warming events, the ionosphere exhibits phase-shifted semi-diurnal perturbations, which are typically attributed to vertical coupling associated with the semi-diurnal lunar tide (M2). Our understanding of ionospheric responses to M2 is limited. This study focuses on fundamental vertical coupling processes associated with the latitudinal extent and hemispheric asymmetry of ionospheric M2 signatures, using total electron content data from the eastern Asian and American sectors. Our results illustrate that the asymmetry maximizes at around 15&#176;N and 20&#176;S magnetic latitudes. In the southern hemisphere, the M2-like signatures extend deep into midlatitude and, in the American sector, encounter the Weddell Sea Anomaly. The M2 amplitude is larger in the northern hemisphere and such asymmetry is more distinct in the eastern Asian sector. The hemispheric asymmetry of M2 signatures in the low latitude can be primarily explained by the trans-equatorial wind modulation of the equatorial plasma fountain. Other physical processes could also be relevant, including hemispheric asymmetry of the M2 below the F region, the ambient thermospheric composition and ionospheric plasma distribution, and the geomagnetic field configuration.</p>
