Abstract:The small-scale mirror mode excited by electron dynamics is a fundamental physical process, attracting research interest in space, laboratory, and astrophysical plasma physics over the past half century. However, the investigations of this process were mostly limited to theories and numerical simulations, with no direct observational evidence for their existence. In this study we present clear observations of electron mirror-mode using Magnetospheric Multiscale data at unprecedented high temporal cadence. These structures are train-like, compressible, nonpropagating, and satisfy the theoretical excitation and electron trapping conditions. They were observed near the Earth's foreshock and its downstream turbulence during the corotating interaction region events, which could be involved with the interaction between solar wind and Earth.

Abstract:<p>The mirror modes are fundamental process in space, and play important roles in solar physics, planetary, interplanetary, astrophysical and laboratory plasmas over the past half century. Although theoretical studies and numerical simulations further revealed their kinetic effects, they are generally regarded as magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scale process. However, if the electron distribution is anisotropic, the electrons could become unstable and excite kinetic scale mirror modes to remove the free energy. This instability was presented for more than thirty years, but so far few unambiguous observational evidence has been found. In this study, we provide high-resolution Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations of electron mirror mode structures. These structures: (1) are train-like features similar to the MHD-scale mirror-mode; (2) are anti-correlation between electron and magnetic pressure; (3) satisfy electron trapping conditions and theoretical excitation of the mirror modes; (4) are &#8220;frozen&#8221; in the plasma flow frame. They were observed during the Corotating Interaction Region events (CIRs) near the Earth&#8217;s foreshock and its downstream turbulence, and could involve with the interaction between Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere and solar wind.</p>

Abstract:Mirror-mode structures are widely observed in space plasma environments. Although plasma features within the structures have been extensively investigated in theoretical models and numerical simulations, relatively few observational studies have been made, due to a lack of high-cadence measurements of particle distributions in previous space missions. In this work, electron dynamics associated with mirror-mode structures are studied based on Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of electron pitch angle distributions. We define mirror-mode peaks/troughs as the region where the magnetic field strength is greater/smaller than the mean field. The observations show that most electrons are trapped inside the mirror-mode troughs and display a donut-like pitch angle distribution configuration. Besides the trapped electrons in mirror-mode troughs, we find that electrons are also trapped between ambient mirror-mode peaks and coexisting untrapped electrons within the mirror-mode structure. Analysis shows that the observed donut-like electron distributions are the result of betatron cooling and the spatial dependence of electron pitch angles within the structure.

Abstract:Abstract The wave–particle cyclotron interaction is a basic process in collisionless plasmas, which results in the redistribution of the energy between plasma waves and charged particles. This paper presents an event observation in order to explore the dynamics of charged particles and plasma waves, i.e., mirror, electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC), and whistler waves, in the Earth’s magnetosheath. It shows that when ions have a high-speed streaming velocity parallel to the magnetic field, EMIC waves arise. We also find that the frequency distribution of nearly parallel and nearly antiparallel whistler waves depends on the parallel streaming velocity of electrons. Based on the linear kinetic theory and the fitting plasma parameters, we show that the differential flows among ion components can enhance the ion cyclotron anisotropy instability that is even stronger than the mirror instability. The differential electron flows induce an asymmetry of the growth rate of counter-propagating whistler waves in the electron cyclotron anisotropy instability. On the other hand, the low-frequency EMIC and transverse electromagnetic waves modulate the ion pitch angle distribution. Moreover, when charged particles flow across the magnetic field, both low- and high-energy electrons are deeply trapped by mirror waves. These results illustrate new features of the observed plasma waves and charged particles in the Earth’s magnetosheath, which could inspire improvement of the wave models therein.
Mirror-wave Structures in the Solar Wind: Grad–Shafranov Reconstruction, MHD, and Hall MHD Simulations with Double-polytropic Energy Closures

Abstract:Mirror-mode waves with anticorrelated density and magnetic field are widely observed in the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres. In this study we analyze the characteristics of three mirror-wave events observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission in the Earth's magnetosheath based on the Grad-Shafranov (GS) reconstruction model with temperature anisotropy. The GS scheme solves steady, two-dimensional MHD equations with field-aligned flow from the plasma and magnetic field measurements taken by a single spacecraft traversing across a coherent field structure. The reconstructed 2D plasma and field maps are obtained in the de Hoffmann-Teller frame and on the plane perpendicular to the invariant axis. The energy closures are a set of empirical energy laws with two polytropic exponents inferred from the observed mirror events which are in the ranges of gamma(perpendicular to) = 0.6 similar to 0.89 and gamma(parallel to) = 0.99 similar to 1.35. It is shown that the mirror waves are nonpropagating with linear magnetic field polarization and possess anticorrelated density, temperatures, and magnetic field with the widths of 10-40 ion inertial lengths. The double-polytropic MHD and Hall MHD simulations of mirror instability show consistent results with the GS reconstructions in terms of field-line geometry, phase relations and the sizes of mirror waves, etc.

Abstract:Most studies on low-frequency electromagnetic cyclotron waves have assumed a small wave amplitude, which ensures the reasonable application of linear and quasi-linear theories. However, the topic of large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron waves has not received much attention. Using Magnetospheric Multiscale measurements, this study observes low-frequency, left-hand circularly polarized electromagnetic waves with magnetic fluctuation similar to 1-2 nT in the dusk flank side of the Earth's magnetosheath. Considering the ambient magnetic field similar to 15 nT therein, the relative wave amplitude is of the order of 0.1. These large magnetic field fluctuations result in a periodic variation of the ion pitch angle. The electron pitch angle exhibits a localized distribution feature with a timescale approximating the wave period. Moreover, some electrons are trapped at a pitch angle similar to 90 degrees, and the trapping is more remarkable as strong waves arise. These two features of the electron pitch angle distribution imply that the trapping of electrons (partly) results from large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron fluctuations. Our results illustrate the important role of large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron waves on the dynamics of charged particles.

Abstract:Very few in situ measurements so far show the details of the interactions between CME and magnetosphere. Here we report a fortuitous observation that the Cluster spacecraft were located at the dusk-side magnetopause, meandering back and forth four times between the ICME and the magnetosphere, and observed part process of the interaction between the CME and the magnetosphere. The primarily analysis showed that: (1) a fast ion beam other than the ambient plasma was observed almost perpendicular to the magnetic field; (2) The left-hand-polarized kinetic Alfvén waves excitation by the ion beam; and (3) the resonances between the kinetic Alfvén waves and part of the beam particles lead to the pitch angle diffusion of resonant particles and formating of a monospheric distribution with nearly constant kinetic energy. The wave-particle resonance may pay an important role in the energy transfer and particle exchange across the magnetopause between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere during the CME impulsion.

Abstract:The electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave usually observed in the Earth's magnetosheath is thought to be generated through the ion temperature anisotropy instability. This paper presents an observation of a long‐lasting large‐amplitude EMIC wave event in the dawnside flank of the magnetosheath by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, lasting from 06:33:00 to 12:35:00 UT on 16 April 2018. The wave amplitude is around 0.2 nT as compared to the ambient magnetic field ~12 nT. The characteristic frequency and scale size are around 0.2 Hz and 1,028 km, respectively. Accompanying EMIC waves are density fluctuations, which exhibit both positive and negative correlations with the longitudinal magnetic field. Using the fitted parameters for the ion and electron phase space densities, plasma kinetic theory predicts local excitations of both EMIC and mirror instabilities, which provide the energy of these observed EMIC waves and density fluctuations.

Abstract:The sudden enhancements of magnetic strength, named magnetic peaks (MPs), are often observed in the magnetosheath of magnetized planets. They are usually identified as flux ropes (FRs) or magnetic mirror mode structures. Previous studies of MPs are mostly on the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scale. In this study, an electron scale MP is reported in the Earth magnetosheath. We present a typical case with a scale of similar to 7 electron gyroradii and a duration of similar to 0.18 s. A strong magnetic disturbance and associated electrical current are detected. Electron vortex is found perpendicular to the magnetic field line and is self-consist with the peak. We use multipoint spacecraft techniques to determine the propagation velocity of the MP structure and find that the magnetic peak does propagate relative to the plasma (ion) flow. This is very different from the magnetic mirror mode that does not propagate relative to the plasma flow. Furthermore, we developed an efficient method that can effectively distinguish "magnetic bottle like" and "FRs like" structures. The MP presented in this study is identified as magnetic bottle like type. The mechanism to generate the electron scale magnetic bottle like structure is still unclear, suggesting that new theory needs to be developed to understand such small-scale phenomena.

Abstract:The wedge‐like and nose‐like ion spectral structures, named after their characteristic shapes in the energy‐time spectrograms, appear to be distinctively different structures in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. Here. we present a case study with conjugate observations from the Arase spacecraft and the twin Van Allen Probes on July 1 and 2, 2017, which displayed the characteristic signatures of the wedge‐like and nose‐like ion structures, respectively. When the spacecraft nearly intersected at L = 2.8, the two structures overlapped with enhanced ion fluxes in the energy range of 1–10 keV. These observations suggest that the wedge‐like and nose‐like spectral signatures are merely the manifestations of one single structure along different spacecraft trajectories. This finding is further validated by the reproduction of both structures from a particle‐tracing model, which also indicates their formation processes associated with the intermittent substorm injections in the nightside magnetosphere.
Direct Measurement of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Between Wave Fields and Protons in Space Plasmas

Abstract:<p>Ion cyclotron resonance is one of the fundamental energy conversion processes through wave field-particle interaction in collisionless plasma. However, the key evidence for cyclotron resonance (i.e., the coherence between wave field and ion phase space density pertaining to the ion cyclotron resonance and responsible for the dissipation of ion cyclotron waves (ICWs)) has yet to be directly observed. Based on the high-quality measurements of space plasma by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellites, we observe that both the wave electromagnetic field vectors and the disturbed ion velocity distribution rotate around the background magnetic field. Moreover, we find that the gyrophase angle difference between the fluctuations in the ion velocity distribution functions and the wave electric field vectors are always in the range of (0, 90) degrees, clearly suggesting the ongoing energy conversion from wave fields to particles. By invoking plasma kinetic theory, we find that the field-particle correlation for the dissipative ion cyclotron waves in the theoretical model matches well with our observations. Furthermore, all the wave electric field vectors (Ewave), the ion current (Ji) and the energy transfer rate (Ji &#183;Ewave) exhibit quasi-periodic oscillations, and the frequency of Ji &#183;Ewave is about twice the frequency of Ewave and Ji, consistent with plasma kinetic theory. Therefore, our combined analysis of MMS observations and kinetic theory provides direct, thorough, and comprehensive evidence for ICW dissipation in space plasmas.</p>
