Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves play an important role in the magnetospheric particle dynamics and can lead to resonant pitch-angle scattering and ultimate precipitation of ring current protons. Commonly, the statistics of in situ EMIC wave measurements is adopted for quantitative investigation of wave-particle interaction processes, which however becomes questionable for detailed case studies especially during geomagnetic storms and substorms. Here we establish a novel technique to infer EMIC wave amplitudes from low-altitude proton measurements onboard the Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES). The detailed procedure is elaborated regarding how to infer the EMIC wave intensity for one specific time point. We then test the technique with a case study comparing the inferred root-mean-square (RMS) EMIC wave amplitude with the conjugate Van Allen Probes EMFISIS wave measurements. Our results suggest that the developed technique can reasonably estimate EMIC wave intensities from low-altitude POES proton flux data, thereby providing a useful tool to construct a data-based, near-real-time, dynamic model of the global distribution of EMIC waves once the proton flux measurements from multiple POES satellites are available for any specific time period.

Global Statistical Study of Ionospheric Waves Based on COSMIC GPS Radio Occultation Data

Abstract:Extracting and parameterizing ionospheric waves globally and statistically is a longstanding problem. Based on the multichannel maximum entropy method (MMEM) used for studying ionospheric waves by previous work, we calculate the parameters of ionospheric waves by applying the MMEM to numerously temporally approximate and spatially close global-positioning-system radio occultation total electron content profile triples provided by the unique clustered satellites flight between years 2006 and 2007 right after the constellation observing system for meteorology, ionosphere, and climate (COSMIC) mission launch. The results show that the amplitude of ionospheric waves increases at the low and high latitudes (similar to 0.15 TECU) and decreases in the mid-latitudes (similar to 0.05 TECU). The vertical wavelength of the ionospheric waves increases in the mid-latitudes (e.g., similar to 50 km at altitudes of 200-250 km) and decreases at the low and high latitudes (e.g., similar to 35km at altitudes of 200-250 km). The horizontal wavelength shows a similar result (e.g., similar to 1400 km in the mid-latitudes and similar to 800 km at the low and high latitudes).

Abstract:Wave number vectors k and minimum cyclotron resonant electron energies Emin of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are analyzed via the phase differencing technique by using Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission data. It is demonstrated that the phase differencing method provides an estimate of the dominant wave number when finite k spectrum broadenings occur. A case study is conducted for the EMIC event on 20 November 2015, showing remarkable agreements with spectral analysis in wave propagation directions. We find that obtained wave vectors, roughly agreeing with the validity of cold plasma theory, might significantly vary from wave packet to wave packet. Numerical calculations indicate that Emin can range from 0.5 to tens of MeV, suggesting that EMIC waves can effectively interact with those relativistic electrons. This study enriches our understanding of the applicability of phase differencing. It further supports that EMIC waves can be responsible for the loss of electrons with an extremely broad energy range in the magnetosphere.

Analyzing EMIC Waves in the Inner Magnetosphere Using Long‐Term Van Allen Probes Observations

Abstract:With 64‐month magnetic data from Van Allen Probes, we have studied not only the global distribution, wave normal angle (θ), and ellipticity (ε) of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves, but also the dependence of their occurrence rates and magnetic amplitudes on the AE* index (the mean value of AE index over previous 1 hr). Our results show that H+ band waves are preferentially detected at 5 ≤ L ≤ 6.5, in the noon sector. They typically have small θ (<30°) and weakly left‐hand polarization but become more oblique and linearly polarized at larger magnetic latitudes or L‐shells. With the increase of AE* index, their occurrence rate significantly increases in the noon sector, and their source region extends to dusk sector. He+ band waves usually occur in the predawn and morning sectors at 3 ≤ L ≤ 4.5. They generally have moderate θ (30 ° − 40°) and left‐hand polarization and also become more oblique and linearly polarized at larger latitudes or L‐shells. There is a clear enhancement of occurrence rate and amplitude during active geomagnetic periods, especially in the dusk and evening sectors. O+ band waves mainly occur at 3 ≤ L ≤ 4 in the predawn sector. They have either very small θ (<20°) or very large θ (>50°), and typically linear or weakly right‐hand polarization. During active periods, they mostly occur at the midnight sector and L < 3.5. As a valuable supplement to previous statistical studies, our result provides not only a more compresentive EMIC wave model for evaluating their effects on the radiation belt, but also detailed observational constraints on generation mechanisms of EMIC waves.

Abstract:The electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave usually observed in the Earth's magnetosheath is thought to be generated through the ion temperature anisotropy instability. This paper presents an observation of a long‐lasting large‐amplitude EMIC wave event in the dawnside flank of the magnetosheath by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, lasting from 06:33:00 to 12:35:00 UT on 16 April 2018. The wave amplitude is around 0.2 nT as compared to the ambient magnetic field ~12 nT. The characteristic frequency and scale size are around 0.2 Hz and 1,028 km, respectively. Accompanying EMIC waves are density fluctuations, which exhibit both positive and negative correlations with the longitudinal magnetic field. Using the fitted parameters for the ion and electron phase space densities, plasma kinetic theory predicts local excitations of both EMIC and mirror instabilities, which provide the energy of these observed EMIC waves and density fluctuations.

Abstract:In this study, we present experimental results from the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association for communication using extremely low frequency/very low frequency (ELF/VLF) electromagnetic (EM) waves excited via amplitude‐modulated auroral electrojet. EM wave signals with modulation frequencies of 2,017 and 3,517 Hz were encoded by quaternary phase shift keying, and three transmission rates (20, 100, and 400 bps) were selected. By analyzing the ELF/VLF EM wave intensity at the receiver, we found that the relationship between the ELF/VLF wave intensity and natural current intensity was affected by the background ionospheric state. Combined with previously published experimental results from High‐frequency Active Auroral Research Program communications, the relationship between bit error rate (BER) and signal‐to‐noise ratio (Eb/N0) at the receiver was also analyzed. The results showed that when Eb/N0 > 8 dB, BER = 0 and when Eb/N0 < 8 dB, the relationship between BER and Eb/N0 satisfies the complementary error function, and the accurate relationship between them is given via experimental data fitting.

Statistical Distribution of the Peak Frequency of ECH Waves in the Outer Magnetosphere from Magnetospheric Multiscale Satellite Observations

Abstract:Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions with frequencies between the harmonics of the electron gyrofrequencies. Their frequency properties provide clues for understanding their generation and are keys to evaluating their scattering efficiency. Based on Magnetospheric Multiscale satellite observations, we explored the statistical frequency properties of first-harmonic band ECH waves in the outer magnetosphere. The frequencies at the peak power of ECH waves are found to be day-night and dawn-dusk asymmetries, with higher values in the regions from dawn to post-noon, and these asymmetries are more evident during weaker geomagnetic activity. Furthermore, the frequencies at the peak power of ECH waves decrease gradually with increasing |MLAT| and are positively correlated with their amplitudes at each magnetic local time or |MLAT|. Information on the frequency properties of ECH waves presented in this study can be crucial for future modeling of their contributions to magnetospheric electron dynamics. Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions with frequencies between the harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency. They act as major contributors to the generation of diffuse auroras in the outer magnetosphere via the pitch angle scattering of plasma sheet electrons into the atmosphere. Theoretically, such electron scattering can be quantified by quasilinear scattering rates, which are strongly controlled by the wave frequency. However, the current knowledge of their frequency properties is lacking. In this study, we statistically analyze the frequency properties of the first-harmonic band ECH waves in the outer magnetosphere using Magnetospheric Multiscale satellite observations. The statistical results show that the wave frequency at peak power highly depends on the magnetic local time (MLT), magnetic latitude (MLAT), and wave amplitude. These new findings are of great importance in advancing our knowledge of ECH wave generation and in modeling ECH-induced plasma sheet electron dynamics in the outer magnetosphere. ECH waves have clear frequency distribution patterns depending on the MLT, MLAT, and wave amplitude The frequency at the peak power is larger from dawn to post-noon, maximized near the magnetic equator, and decreases with increasing |MLAT| The frequency at the peak power increases with the amplitude for each specific magnetic local time or |MLAT|
Temporal variations of electromagnetic responses in the ionosphere excited by the NWC communication station

Abstract:The characteristic of electromagnetic field anomalies in the ionosphere excited by earthquake has been studied by many researchers using satellite observation data in recent years. This study explores what are the differences of the electromagnetic field anomalies with different ionospheric backgrounds with the help of the known VLF signal transmitted by communication station on the ground, which can be observed by satellite in the ionosphere. VLF electric and magnetic field spectral data from DEMETER satellite is used to analyze the diurnal, seasonal, and annual variations of ionospheric electromagnetic responses from 2005 to 2009, which were excited by the NWC communication station located in Australia. The Maxwell equation in the ionosphere is solved using the transfer matrix method to simulate the propagation characteristics of VLF electromagnetic waves excited by NWC transmitter. Compared with the observation result and simulation result, the electromagnetic response is obtained with different ionospheric backgrounds. The result shows the electric field at daytime is almost 40 dB larger than at nighttime, and the magnetic field is 15 dB. According to the data analysis result, it is found that seasonal and annual variations of the electromagnetic field is not very significant and solar activity has some effect on the response, which is smaller when the solar is more active. The simulation results are consistent with the data analysis. The variation of the response may be caused by the distribution of electron density below 250 km in the ionosphere. If the electron density is higher, the electromagnetic response will be lower. The variation of the electric field is much more obvious than the magnetic field, which means finding earthquake anomalies from electric data of satellite may be more efficient than the magnetic field. Getting precise electron profiles below 250 km will be very helpful for studying the electromagnetic anomalies in the ionosphere related with earthquakes.
Occurrence Rates of Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron (EMIC) Waves with Rising Tones in the Van Allen Probes Data Set

Abstract:In Fourier time‐frequency power spectrograms of satellite magnetic field data, electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves may feature discrete, rising tone structures that rapidly increase in frequency. Using data from the Van Allen Probes Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS) fluxgate magnetometer, we conducted a statistical study of EMIC waves from September 2012 through June 2016. We compared the occurrence rates and spatial distributions for all EMIC waves with those for rising tone EMIC waves as a function of magnetic local time (MLT) and L shell, as well as a function of RXY and Z in solar‐magnetic (SM) coordinates. Overall, EMIC waves occurred during 2.4% of the time period considered, but rising tone EMIC waves were only found during 0.2% of the time period considered. About 7‐8% of the minutes of orbital coverage with H+ or He+ band EMIC waves had rising tones. The regions of peak occurrence rates for H+ and He+ band waves, as well as waves with rising tones, were found in the noon and dusk sectors for 4
