Abstract:In Fourier time‐frequency power spectrograms of satellite magnetic field data, electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves may feature discrete, rising tone structures that rapidly increase in frequency. Using data from the Van Allen Probes Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS) fluxgate magnetometer, we conducted a statistical study of EMIC waves from September 2012 through June 2016. We compared the occurrence rates and spatial distributions for all EMIC waves with those for rising tone EMIC waves as a function of magnetic local time (MLT) and L shell, as well as a function of RXY and Z in solar‐magnetic (SM) coordinates. Overall, EMIC waves occurred during 2.4% of the time period considered, but rising tone EMIC waves were only found during 0.2% of the time period considered. About 7‐8% of the minutes of orbital coverage with H+ or He+ band EMIC waves had rising tones. The regions of peak occurrence rates for H+ and He+ band waves, as well as waves with rising tones, were found in the noon and dusk sectors for 4

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves have been shown to be able to drive strong electron precipitation, particularly at MeV energies. However, the spatio‐temporal evolution of both the waves and the resulting precipitation is still not well understood. Here we investigate the evolution of relativistic electron precipitation driven by EMIC waves through combined observations from the Van Allen Probes and the CALorimetric Electron Telescope experiment onboard the International Space Station. Two case studies are examined where EMIC waves near the magnetic equator and precipitation at low altitude were detected in close magnetic conjunction, both of which were confined to narrow radial regions but persisted multiple hours. These observations, combined with quasilinear calculations, confirm that long‐lived EMIC waves can drive hours‐long MeV electron precipitation loss. However, the magnitude of the precipitation varied significantly during one of the events, as resonance conditions, particularly plasma density, evolved.

Abstract:We provide a post-mission assessment of the science and data from the Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS) investigation on the NASA Van Allen Probes mission. An overview of important scientific results is presented, covering all of the key wave modes and DC magnetic fields measured by EMFISIS. Discussion of the data products, which are publicly available, follows to provide users with guidance on characteristics and known issues of the measurements. We present guidance on the correct use of derived products, in particular, the wave-normal analysis (WNA) which yields fundamental wave properties such as polarization, ellipticity, and Poynting flux. We also give information about the plasma density derived from measuring the upper hybrid line in the inner magnetosphere.

Analyzing EMIC Waves in the Inner Magnetosphere Using Long‐Term Van Allen Probes Observations

Abstract:With 64‐month magnetic data from Van Allen Probes, we have studied not only the global distribution, wave normal angle (θ), and ellipticity (ε) of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves, but also the dependence of their occurrence rates and magnetic amplitudes on the AE* index (the mean value of AE index over previous 1 hr). Our results show that H+ band waves are preferentially detected at 5 ≤ L ≤ 6.5, in the noon sector. They typically have small θ (<30°) and weakly left‐hand polarization but become more oblique and linearly polarized at larger magnetic latitudes or L‐shells. With the increase of AE* index, their occurrence rate significantly increases in the noon sector, and their source region extends to dusk sector. He+ band waves usually occur in the predawn and morning sectors at 3 ≤ L ≤ 4.5. They generally have moderate θ (30 ° − 40°) and left‐hand polarization and also become more oblique and linearly polarized at larger latitudes or L‐shells. There is a clear enhancement of occurrence rate and amplitude during active geomagnetic periods, especially in the dusk and evening sectors. O+ band waves mainly occur at 3 ≤ L ≤ 4 in the predawn sector. They have either very small θ (<20°) or very large θ (>50°), and typically linear or weakly right‐hand polarization. During active periods, they mostly occur at the midnight sector and L < 3.5. As a valuable supplement to previous statistical studies, our result provides not only a more compresentive EMIC wave model for evaluating their effects on the radiation belt, but also detailed observational constraints on generation mechanisms of EMIC waves.
On the Observation of Electrostatic Harmonics Associated with EMIC Waves

Abstract:In this study, we report two events of electrostatic harmonics associated with electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves recorded by the Van Allen Probes. Based on the wave and plasma measurements, the wave features are investigated and the possible generation mechanism is discussed. The frequencies of these electrostatic emissions are at the integer and fractional frequencies of the fundamental EMIC waves, which can be across and above the local proton gyrofrequencies. When the frequencies increase, the electric power spectral densities of the electrostatic waves decrease, and their durations become shorter. Considering the bidirectional propagation of the fundamental EMIC waves, we propose that wave-wave resonance probably accounts for the generation of the observed electrostatic emissions. The calculation of cross bicoherence index supports this scenario. This study analyzes a type of electrostatic harmonic wave associated with EMIC waves, essentially different from the electromagnetic harmonics reported before, and provides new insight into the evolution of EMIC waves.

Amplitude‐Dependent Properties and Excitation Mechanisms of EMIC Waves in the Earth's Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:Large-amplitude (B-w > 1 nT) electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves can cause the rapid loss of >1 MeV electrons, greatly impacting radiation belt dynamics. With long-term Van Allen Probe B observations from 2013 to 2018, we conducted a statistical survey to reveal the amplitude-dependent EMIC wave properties and excitation mechanisms in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. Statistical results show that large-amplitude EMIC waves prefer to occur in the afternoon-dusk sector in the northern hemisphere and tend to be more left-hand polarized with smaller wave normal angles. In addition, the high proton beta parallel conditions also favor the generation of larger-amplitude EMIC waves. From the variations of EMIC wave occurrence rate as a function of SuperMAG electrojet (SME) index and solar wind dynamic pressure, we find that the small-amplitude EMIC waves are generally triggered by high solar wind dynamic pressure, while large-amplitude EMIC wave generation is both affected by substorm activity and solar wind dynamic pressure. The normalized magnetic field perturbations during EMIC wave appearance, which enable us to distinguish the relative roles of magnetospheric compression and substorm injection in the excitation of different-amplitude EMIC waves, provide further evidence that as wave amplitude increases, substorm injection plays a more important role in EMIC wave excitation, and magnetospheric compression is also an indispensable trigger.
Propagation of EMIC Waves Inside the Plasmasphere: A Two‐Event Study

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are important for the loss of high-energy electrons in the radiation belt. Based on the measurements of Van Allen Probes, two events during the same storm period are presented to study the propagation of EMIC waves. In the first event, left-handed polarized EMIC waves were observed near the plasmapause, while right-handed waves were observed in the inner plasmasphere. The Poynting flux of the right-hand waves was mainly directed inward and equatorward, and no positive growth rates were obtained in the region of these right-hand waves, indicating the inward propagation of the waves from a higher L-shell. In the second event, the wave vectors were quasi-perpendicular to the background magnetic field inside the plasmaspheric plume but became quasi-parallel outside. This phenomenon can be explained by the refraction of the large density gradient, which qualitatively satisfies Snell's law. These observations provide indirect evidence of the inward propagation of the EMIC waves and give a new insight on how density gradients may modify wave properties.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves have been proposed to cause efficient losses of highly relativistic (>1MeV) electrons via gyroresonant interactions. Simultaneous observations of EMIC waves and equatorial electron pitch angle distributions, which can be used to directly quantify the EMIC wave scattering effect, are still very limited, however. In the present study, we evaluate the effect of EMIC waves on pitch angle scattering of ultrarelativistic (>1MeV) electrons during the main phase of a geomagnetic storm, when intense EMIC wave activity was observed in situ (in the plasma plume region with high plasma density) on both Van Allen Probes. EMIC waves captured by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) probes and on the ground across the Canadian Array for Real-time Investigations of Magnetic Activity (CARISMA) are also used to infer their magnetic local time (MLT) coverage. From the observed EMIC wave spectra and local plasma parameters, we compute wave diffusion rates and model the evolution of electron pitch angle distributions. By comparing model results with local observations of pitch angle distributions, we show direct, quantitative evidence of EMIC wave-driven relativistic electron losses in the Earth's outer radiation belt.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves play an important role in the dynamics of ultrarelativistic electron population in the radiation belts. However, as EMIC waves are very sporadic, developing a parameterization of such wave properties is a challenging task. Currently, there are no dynamic, activity‐dependent models of EMIC waves that can be used in the long‐term (several months) simulations, which makes the quantitative modeling of the radiation belt dynamics incomplete. In this study, we investigate Kp, Dst, and AE indices, solar wind speed, and dynamic pressure as possible parameters of EMIC wave presence. The EMIC waves are included in the long‐term simulations (1 year, including different geomagnetic activity) performed with the Versatile Electron Radiation Belt code, and we compare results of the simulation with the Van Allen Probes observations. The comparison shows that modeling with EMIC waves, parameterized by solar wind dynamic pressure, provides a better agreement with the observations among considered parameterizations. The simulation with EMIC waves improves the dynamics of ultrarelativistic fluxes and reproduces the formation of the local minimum in the phase space density profiles.
Properties of Intense Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves: Implications for Quasi-linear, Nonlinear, and Nonresonant Wave-Particle Interactions

Abstract:Resonant interactions between relativistic electrons and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves provide an effective loss mechanism for this important electron population in the outer radiation belt. The diffusive regime of electron scattering and loss has been well incorporated into radiation belt models within the framework of the quasi-linear diffusion theory, whereas the nonlinear regime has been mostly studied with test particle simulations. There is also a less investigated, nonresonant regime of electron scattering by EMIC waves. All three regimes should be present, depending on the EMIC waves and ambient plasma properties, but the occurrence rates of these regimes have not been previously quantified. This study provides a statistical investigation of the most important EMIC wave-packet characteristics for the diffusive, nonlinear, and nonresonant regimes of electron scattering. We utilize 3 years of Van Allen Probe observations to derive distributions of wave amplitudes, wave-packet sizes, and rates of frequency variations within individual wave-packets. We demonstrate that EMIC waves typically propagate as wave-packets with $\sim 10$ wave periods each, and that $\sim 3-10$\% of such wave-packets can reach the regime of nonlinear resonant interaction with 2 to 6 MeV electrons. We show that EMIC frequency variations within wave-packets reach $50-100$\% of the center frequency, corresponding to a significant high-frequency tail in their wave power spectrum. We explore the consequences of these wave-packet characteristics for high and low energy electron precipitation by H-band EMIC waves and for the relative importance of quasi-linear and nonlinear regimes of wave-particle interactions.

Wavenumber analysis of EMIC waves

Abstract:It has been highly controversial as to whether and how efficient electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves can scatter sub-megaelectronvolt (MeV) to multi-megaelectron volt electrons into the atmospheric loss cone. The capability of EMIC wave scattering essentially depends on the wavenumber spectra, instead of readily available frequency spectra. We present a method to obtain the EMIC wavenumbers directly from the wave electromagnetic field measurements, from which we further evaluate the characteristics of electron minimum resonant energy and electron scattering rate due to EMIC waves. Based on the analysis of EMIC waves identified from 5.5 years of Van Allen Probes field measurement, we find that only a small fraction of H+ band wave events can resonate with electrons down to MeV, while none of He+ band waves at the maximum wave power can. The electron scattering rate increases with increasing levels of geomagnetic activities. The scattering rate for H+ band is sufficient to cause significant precipitation of electrons for a broad energy range (including MeV electrons), especially during times with high geomagnetic activity.

Abstract:The background cold electron density plays an important role in plasma and wave dynamics. Here, we investigate an event with clear modulation of the particle fluxes and wave intensities by background electron density irregularities based on Van Allen Probes observations. The energies at the peak fluxes of protons and Helium ions of 100 eV to several keV are well correlated with the total electron density variation. Intense electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) and magnetosonic (MS) waves are simultaneously observed in the high-density regions and disappear in low-density regions. Based on the linear theory of wave growth, the EMIC waves are generated by the similar to 10 keV protons, while most MS waves are generated by the positive gradient of proton phase space density at several hundred eV in the high-density regions. Our results indicate the importance of background plasma density structures in generation of plasma waves by unstable ion distributions.
Ion Heating by Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves and Magnetosonic Waves in the Earth's Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and magnetosonic waves are commonly observed in the Earth's magnetosphere associated with enhanced ring current activity. Using wave and ion measurements from the Van Allen Probes, we identify clear correlations between the hydrogen- and helium-band EMIC waves with the enhancement of trapped helium and oxygen ion fluxes, respectively. We calculate the diffusion coefficients of different ion species using quasi-linear theory to understand the effects of resonant scattering by EMIC waves. Our calculations indicate that EMIC waves can cause pitch angle scattering loss of several keV to hundreds of keV ions, and heating of tens of eV to several keV helium and oxygen ions by hydrogen- and helium-band EMIC waves, respectively. Moreover, we found that magnetosonic waves can cause the resonant heating of thermal protons. Our study indicates the importance of energy transfer from the EMIC and magnetosonic waves to ions with different species at thermal energies.
