Abstract:Ultrafast laser welding technology for transparent materials has developed rapidly in recent years; however, high-strength non-optical contact transparent material welding has been a challenge. This work presents a welding method for silica glass using a double-pulse femtosecond (fs) laser and optimizes the laser processing parameters to enhance the welding performance. The welding characteristics of silica glass are analyzed under different time delays by controlling the pulse delay of double pulses. In addition to comprehensively study the influence of various experimental conditions on double-pulse fs laser welding, multi-level tests are designed for five factors, including average laser power, pulse delay, scanning interval, scanning speed, and repetition rate. Finally, by optimizing the parameters, a welding strength of 57.15 MPa is achieved at an average power of 3500 mW, repetition rate of 615 kHz, pulse delay of 66.7 ps, scanning interval of 10 μm, and scanning speed of 1000 μm/s. This work introduces a new approach to glass welding and presents optimal parameters for achieving higher welding strength, which can be widely used in aerospace, microelectronic packaging, microfluidics, and other fields.

Abstract:Lap welding restricts the connection state of glasses by vertically incident ultrafast laser at the interface to be welded, which cannot meet the increasingly flexible welding needs. In this Letter, glass butt welding is achieved by oblique incidence of an ultrafast laser, expanding the applicability of ultrafast laser glass welding. Furthermore, the propagation path of the laser beam after oblique incidence into a glass is solved based on geometric optics, the dynamic development of the molten pool in a glass is observed through a high-speed camera, and the mechanism of glass butt welding is elucidated. Finally, the influence of laser pulse energy, glass tilt angle, and defocus amount on welding strength is investigated, achieving a maximum shear strength of 11.5 MPa.

Abstract:In the present work, a direct bond between glass and silicon with optical contact was formed by 515 ran picosecond laser controlled by the galvanometer scanning system. A crack-free welding effect without edge breakage and residues was obtained with breaking strength as high as 122 MPa. New crystalline phase (SiO2) was produced and silicon and oxygen have a spatial distribution gradient in the welding area analyzed by XRD and EDS, respectively, revealing that mixing and inter-diffusion of substances have occurred during laser irradiation. The transmission of near infrared light in the welding area is significantly increased compared with the non-welding area analyzed by inverted microscope. A confocal laser scanning microscope was used to observe the morphology and width of welds, which variation trend of axial focal positions is consistent with the teardrop structure produced by nonlinear absorption effect. Scanning speeds and laser repetition frequencies also affect the width and morphology of the weld.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a technique, ultrafast laser machining–picosecond laser welding, to fabricate an embedded thin film by placing a coating material (ZnO powders) between the interface of two glass substrates. We researched the thickness (embedding depth of ZnO powders) and the formation mechanism of the embedded thin film and the zinc content and distribution. Under our experimental conditions, an embedded thin film of 600 μm thickness was formed. At a distance of 340 μm within the embedded thin film, the zinc content peaked at 400 cps. Finally, we fabricate an embedded thin film with the bonding strength of 12.22 MPa. This technique breaks through the bottlenecks of thin films fabricated by conventional lasers, such as long duration, low precision and serious chemical pollution, which has great significance for achieving high-end manufacturing of thin-film devices.

Abstract:Glass is an excellent packaging material for microelectronic devices, and laser glass welding is a reliable method of achieving glass packaging. However, because glass is transparent to continuous or long pulse width laser, laser energy must be deposited directly through the nonlinear effect of ultrafast laser and glass. At the moment, ultrafast laser glass welding requires harsh optical contact conditions. Furthermore, because of the ultrafast laser's ultra-high peak power, the temperature within the laser action zone will rise and condense too quickly, causing the formation of thermal stress and microcracks, affecting the strength and stability of the weld and impeding the engineering application of this technology. In this paper, an ultrafast laser with an ultra-high repetition rate was used to increase nonlinear absorptivity and heat accumulation due to its short pulse interval, thereby increasing the size of the heat affected zone and liquid pool and enabling glass welding without optical contact. In addition, a slit was placed near the front of the objective lens to shape the incident circular Gaussian light into an elliptical Gaussian distribution, which could effectively inhibit the induction and generation of microcracks, ensure the forming quality of weld seams, and play an important role in promoting the engineering application of this technology.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser welding has emerged as a significant technology for the joining of transparent materials and has been extensively researched for the welding of glass materials in recent years. However, achieving a robust connection requires optical contact between the samples during laser processing, which complicates the welding process and increases its cost. To achieve high-strength welding of glass samples without optical contact, the samples are typically pressed together to minimize the gap, allowing the molten materials to completely fill it. In this study, two approaches are employed to facilitate high-strength welding of silica glasses: femtosecond (fs) laser welding with the assistance of pressure using a fixture and femtosecond laser welding aided by a water intermediate layer. The welding quality achieved by both methods is thoroughly examined and compared. The findings reveal that femtosecond laser welding with water assistance outperforms other methods in terms of welding uniformity and quality. Furthermore, the principle behind achieving high-quality welding is discussed to elucidate the success of this method.

Abstract:Recently, welding of dissimilar material, such as transparent material to metal material, is widely used in aerospace, microelectronic packaging, medicine, etc . Ultrafast laser welding provides a new method for high-performance dissimilar material welding, in which the non-optical contact dissimilar material welding has become a new research hot spot. In this paper, we report the effective welding of Fe-36Ni with roughness as high as 1.1 μm to sapphire, which, to our knowledge, is the roughest dissimilar material welding achieved in ultrafast laser. A 238 fs, 1035 nm, 200 kHz Burst mode femtosecond laser (4 sub-pulses with a total energy of 132.5μJ) yields a smooth and uniform interface with a welding strength up to 11 MPa. In this context, the welding performance and mechanism of Burst mode and single pulse mode ultrafast laser are systematically analyzed. The relevant research results are expected to provide theoretical guidance for the welding of high-strength and high-stability dissimilar materials.

Abstract:<p>Ultrafast laser welding is a fast, clean, and contactless technique for joining a broad range of materials. Nevertheless, this technique cannot be applied for bonding semiconductors and metals. By investigating the nonlinear propagation of picosecond laser pulses in silicon, it is elucidated how the evolution of filaments during propagation prevents the energy deposition at the semiconductor–metal interface. While the restrictions imposed by nonlinear propagation effects in semiconductors usually inhibit countless applications, the possibility to perform semiconductor–metal ultrafast laser welding is demonstrated. This technique relies on the determination and the precompensation of the nonlinear focal shift for relocating filaments and thus optimizing the energy deposition at the interface between the materials. The resulting welds show remarkable shear joining strengths (up to 2.2 MPa) compatible with applications in microelectronics. Material analyses shed light on the physical mechanisms involved during the interaction.</p>

Abstract:Glass-forming ability is a long-standing concern in the field of metallic glasses (MGs), which greatly limits their maximum casting size and extensive applications. In this work, we report an ultrasonic-assisted rapid cold welding of bulk MGs without using any additives. MGs with various compositions are welded together under a 20,000-Hz high-frequency ultrasonic vibration without losing their amorphous nature. The ultrasonic technology offers the advantages of rapid bonding (< 1 s) at low temperature (near room temperature) and low stress (< 1 MPa). According to the phenomenon observed in the experiment, the activated fresh atoms diffuse through the broken channel port under continuous rupture of the oxide layer, and the ultrasonic vibration accelerates the atomic-diffusion process. Finally, stable bonding of the MG interface is realized. This universal ultrasonic-assisted welding process can realize the composition design of dissimilar MGs as well as tuning of new materials with new performance.

Penilla et al. developed two methods for welding ceramics using ultrafast lasers. One method tunes the ceramic properties, allowing the laser to transit through the ceramic and weld at the interface between pieces. The other method optimizes a gap between pieces to efficiently deposit energy. Abstract:To achieve laser direct welding of glass and metal without optical contact is hard, owing to the large difference in thermal expansion and thermal conductivity between glass and metal and an insignificant melting area. In this study, the high-power picosecond pulsed laser was selected to successfully weld the aluminosilicate glass/6061 aluminum alloy with a gap of 35 ± 5 μm between glass and metal. The results show that the molten glass and metal diffuse and mix at the interface. No defects such as microcracks or holes are observed in the diffusion mixing zone. Due to the relatively large gap, the glass collapsed after melting and caulking, resulting in an approximately arc-shaped microcrack between modified glass and unmodified glass or weakly modified glass. The shape of the glass modification zone and thermal accumulation are influenced by the single-pulse energy and linear energy density of the picosecond laser during welding, resulting in variations in the number and size of defects and the shape of the glass modification zone. By reasonably tuning the two factors, the shear strength of the joint reaches 15.98 MPa. The diffusion and mixing at the interface and the mechanical interlocking effect of the glass modification zone are the main reasons for achieving a high shear strength of the joint. This study will provide reference and new ideas for the laser transmission welding of glass and metal in the non-optical contact conditions.

Abstract:The ability to weld metals and insulators is widely required in aerospace, sensors and Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). Femtosecond laser welding is a precise and clean technique for bonding materials with benefits including high location accuracy, low heat-affected zone and little waste generation. However, the connection process is still unclear so that pump–probe microscopy and plasma image were used to reveal the welding mechanism at the contact interface. Under the irradiation of a femtosecond laser pulse, the aluminum melted after a few picoseconds, then re-solidified and connected two different materials. Additionally, plasma was limited in the interaction zone after laser irradiation for optical contact (OC), so the smaller affected region with the most absorbed energy was jointed easily with higher shear strength. Self-focusing and non-linear absorption in fused silica are key factors affecting the shear strength, since the energy absorption and modification in fused silica would induce internal stress and decrease the energy deposition at the contact interface. Our findings not only reduce the fracture of fused silica and increase shear strength up to 25.75 MPa by means of focal point pre-compensation, but also demonstrate the extraordinary potential of ultrashort laser welding in the field of precise connection of heterogenous materials.

Abstract:Devices consisting of glass and metal are widely applied to many fields. With the miniaturisation and the expansion of application fields of these devices, the requirement of micro-joining between glass and metal is becoming higher. In this work, silica glass and 304 stainless steel were welded by the infrared nanosecond fibre laser. The welding quality was optimised by varying the laser parameters. The joint strength reached 16.39 MPa. The mechanism of the welding between the two materials was investigated. The results demonstrated the elemental diffusion in the interface between silica glass and 304 stainless steel under laser heating, where Fe, Cr and Si were the crucial factors in forming the welds. During the elemental diffusion, Cr was much easier to diffuse into glass than Fe. In the interface, Fe-O-Si bonds were observed. Moreover, increasing Cr content in the interface is a probable approach to improve the joint strength.

Abstract:Nanojoining (including nanowelding, nanosoldering, etc.) of metal nanomaterials offers the opportunity of constructing complex structures and advanced functional devices at the nanoscale. In comparison with nanowelding, nanosoldering does not involve the melting of base metal and shows considerable mechanical strength and good thermal and electrical conductivity. Here, an optically controlled local nanosoldering technique, which ensures the nanostructures to be bonded while their original structural integrity is retained, is proposed and demonstrated. Typical elemental devices (V-shaped, T-shaped, and X-shaped nanostructures) are formed with this nanosoldering technique. The conductivity of one V-shaped junction is enhanced by 500 times after nanosoldering. This facile nanosoldering technique provides an avenue to locally manipulate light, charge, heat, and mass transport at the nanoscale and is thereby expected to benefit the development of nanophotonics and nanoelectronics.

Abstract:<p>In order to study the influence of air gap and focus position on the quality of ps-laser glass-to-glass welding we implemented a method of detecting the air gap between glass surfaces based on optical thin film interference. The method allows real-time optimization of the welding process. We measure the air gap between glass surfaces to be bonded and the laser focal position, which are set as the constraint conditions affecting the nonlinear self-focusing of the laser beam. The processing parameters of picosecond laser welding are determined and the welding strength and the morphology of bonded zone are detected and observed. Laser welding with good performance can be achieved with an air gap of 2 μm. SEM microscopy shows that the bonding region between two glass surfaces is very smooth in the vicinity of the tear-drop shaped cross-sectional structure of the welded glass. A tensile strength inspection fixture is designed, and we measured a tensile fracture strength of over 30 MPa for the welded glass. Through confocal microscope analysis, the width and depth of fracture morphology of welded samples are shown to change with air gap, which is consistent with the theoretical analysis.</p>

Study on the solder flow in a narrow gap with metal surface texture

Abstract:Obvious voids in the solder in a narrow gap is a common problem that greatly affects the reliability of mechanical connections. Due to its high heating rate, laser soldering causes more severe voids and even evolves into dispersion of the solder. A method of metal surface texturing is put forward, in which the texture gradient is used to directionally transport solder for lower dispersity, and the pattern design of texture is used to reduce the void rate. The directional transport of solder is realized through the differences in oxidation degree and microstructure of stainless steel surface under different ultrafast laser scanning speeds. The discharge of voids in the solder is achieved through the reservation of the central area in the solder and the oscillation during the laser heating process. Based on the present method, the aggregation of solder is achieved, with the void rate of 18 % and the joining strength of 10.4 MPa.

Abstract:Laser spot bonding is an approach to weld transparent materials at micro level or bonding in/for MEMs devices. This manuscript intends to investigate the dynamics of welding procedure in transparent materials with ultrafast lasers acting as the heat source. Spot bonding takes place when a laser beam creates a molten pool of the two materials to be bonded and subsequently the molten materials interact, gel with each other and solidify to create a bond. Thus, predicting the correct amount of molten matter is highly important for a reliable bond. Proper understanding of ultrafast laser matter interaction will provide the means to define ultrafast laser parameters for controlled molten volume leading to controlled bonding strength. This study will utilize the non linear breakdown caused by ultrafast lasers in borosilicate glass to determine the temperature profile and estimate the radial weld area. A finite element (FE) model of the system is presented and solved in ANSYS to estimate the weld area in borosilicate glass strips under action of a single ultrafast laser pulse. The effects of the focusing location of the laser beam, laser process parameters (energy level, focusing lens, pulse width) and material properties (optical and thermal absorptivity) will be discussed.

Abstract:Recent research has focused on the ultrafast laser welding of metal and glass due to its diverse applications in aerospace, medicine, and optical sensing. However, the significant material property differences between metals and glass, along with strict surface requirements, pose challenges to the development of metal-glass welding and limit its industrial utility. Utilizing high-pulse-energy lasers has proven effective in mitigating these challenges. This study comprehensively analyzes a millijoule (mJ)-level femtosecond pulse laser welding technique applied to aluminum alloy and fused silica, with a primary emphasis on understanding the characteristics and mechanism of joint. During the welding process, aluminum and fused silica mutually diffuse, leading to the formation of five distinct zones at the joint's cross-section. Within the aluminum molten pool in rapid cooling, aluminum grains undergo continuous growth along a temperature gradient and then transform into smaller epitaxial grains with altered grain orientations and HAGBs. An amorphous Al 2 O 3 phase coexists with aluminum, forming a lamellar structure. Besides, silicon nanoparticles and transitional γ-Al 2 O 3 precipitate near the center of the weld. This study examines the underlying causes of these phenomena and provides a detailed discussion of the associated strengthening mechanisms, ultimately resulting in a maximum shear strength of 8.94 MPa.
