Abstract:Topology, a mathematical concept, has recently become a popular and truly transdisciplinary topic encompassing condensed matter physics, solid state chemistry, and materials science. Since there is a direct connection between real space, namely atoms, valence electrons, bonds and orbitals, and reciprocal space, namely bands and Fermi surfaces, via symmetry and topology, classifying topological materials within a single-particle picture is possible. Currently, most materials are classified as trivial insulators, semimetals and metals, or as topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl nodal-line semimetals, and topological metals. The key ingredients for topology are: certain symmetries, the inert pair effect of the outer electrons leading to inversion of the conduction and valence bands, and spin-orbit coupling. This review presents the topological concepts related to solids from the viewpoint of a solid-state chemist, summarizes techniques for growing single crystals, and describes basic physical property measurement techniques to characterize topological materials beyond their structure and provide examples of such materials. Finally, a brief outlook on the impact of topology in other areas of chemistry is provided at the end of the article.

Topological phases in discrete stochastic systems

Abstract:Topological invariants have proved useful for analyzing emergent function as they characterize a property of the entire system, and are insensitive to local details, disorder, and noise. They support edge states, which reduce the system response to a lower dimensional space and offer a mechanism for the emergence of global cycles within a large phase space. Topological invariants have been heavily studied in quantum electronic systems and been observed in other classical platforms such as mechanical lattices. However, this framework largely describes equilibrium systems within an ordered crystalline lattice, whereas biological systems are often strongly non-equilibrium with stochastic components. We review recent developments in topological states in discrete stochastic models in 1d and 2d systems, and initial progress in identifying testable signature of topological states in molecular systems and ecology. These models further provide simple principles for targeted dynamics in synthetic systems or in the engineering of reconfigurable materials. Lastly, we describe novel theoretical properties of these systems such as the necessity for non-Hermiticity in permitting edge states, as well as new analytical tools to reveal these properties. The emerging developments shed light on fundamental principles for non-equilibrium systems and topological protection enabling robust biological function.

Abstract:There are three important types of structural properties that remain unchanged under the structural transformation of condensed matter physics and chemistry. They are the properties that remain unchanged under the structural periodic transformation-periodic properties. The properties that remain unchanged under the structural multi scale transformation-fractal properties. The properties that remain unchanged under the structural continuous deformation transformation-topological properties. In this paper, we will describe topological properties and characterizations in three layers: the first layer is intuitive concept, characterizations and applications, the second layer is logical physics understanding of topological properties, characterizations and applications, and the third layer is the nature of topological properties and its power. Duality and trinity are viewed as intrinsically topological objects and are recognized as common knowledge shared among human society activity, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and many other kinds of nature science and technology. Some important methods used so far to characterize the topological properties, including topological index, topological order, topological invariant, topology class and the topology partition are discussed. The theories of molecular topology, topological quantum matter including topological insulators, topological metal and topological superconductors and topological quantum computing are reviewed. The development of the topological duality connection between the qubit and singularity via topological space time is briefly introduced. We will see the use of iterated function systems (IFS)to simulate the connection between singularities and their qubit control codes. The novel applications of topology in integrated circuits technology are also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The topology of an insulator can be defined even when all eigenstates of the system are localized - an extreme case of Anderson insulators that we call ultra-localized. We derive the classification of such ultra-localized insulators in all symmetry classes and dimensions. We clarify their bulk-boundary correspondence and show that ultra-localized systems are in many instances phases of matter not described by the known classification of topological insulators and superconductors.

Abstract:Topological materials refer to solid structures with topologically protected electronic states or other degrees of freedom.A prime example is a Chern insulator in which the occupied bands of states are organized with a non-trivial topology as characterized by a nonzero Chern integer, exhibiting gapless chiral excitations on the boundaries, which are robust against scatterings.In the presence of certain discrete symmetries, such as time reversal or mirror reflection, one can have more general topological classes of insulators exhibiting helical or spin-momentum locked boundary excitations, with a lesser degree of robustness against scatterings [1].

Abstract:Topology is a fundamental aspect of quantum physics, and it has led to key breakthroughs and results in various fields of quantum materials. In condensed matters, this has culminated in the recent discovery of symmetry-protected topological phases. However, symmetry-based topological characterizations rely heavily on symmetry analysis and are incapable of detecting the topological phases in systems where the symmetry is broken, thus missing a large portion of interesting topological physics. Here, we propose a new approach to understanding the topological nature of quantum materials, which we call feature spectrum topology. In this framework, the ground-state is separated into different partitions by the eigenspectrum of a feature, a particular chosen internal quantum degree of freedom, such as spin or pseudo-spin, and the topological properties are determined by analysis of these ground-state partitions. We show that bulk-boundary correspondence guarantees gapless spectral flows in either one of the energy or feature spectrum. Most importantly, such 'feature-energy duality' of gapless spectral flows serves as a fundamental manifestation of a topological phase, thereby paving a new way towards topological characterizations beyond symmetry considerations. Our development reveals the topological nature of a quantum ground state hidden outside symmetry-based characterizations, hence, providing a platform for a more refined search of unconventional topological materials.

Fractality-induced Topology

Abstract:Fractal geometries, characterized by self-similar patterns and non-integer dimensions, provide an intriguing platform for exploring topological phases of matter. In this work, we introduce a theoretical framework that leverages isospectral reduction to effectively simplify complex fractal structures, revealing the presence of topologically protected boundary and corner states. Our approach demonstrates that fractals can support topological phases, even in the absence of traditional driving mechanisms such as magnetic fields or spin-orbit coupling. The isospectral reduction not only elucidates the underlying topological features but also makes this framework broadly applicable to a variety of fractal systems. Furthermore, our findings suggest that these topological phases may naturally occur in materials with fractal structures found in nature. This work opens new avenues for designing fractal-based topological materials, advancing both theoretical understanding and experimental exploration of topology in complex, self-similar geometries.

Abstract:Symmetry deepens our insight into a physical system and its interplay with topology enables the discovery of topological phases. Symmetry analysis is conventionally performed either in the physical space of interest, or in the corresponding reciprocal space. Here we borrow the concept of virtual space from transformation optics to demonstrate how a certain class of symmetries can be visualised in a transformed, spectrally related coordinate space, illuminating the underlying topological transitions. By projecting a plasmonic system in a higher-dimensional virtual space onto a lower-dimensional system in real space, we show how transformation optics allows us to construct a topologically non-trivial system by inspecting its modes in the virtual space. Interestingly, we find that the topological invariant can be controlled via the singularities in the conformal mapping, enabling the intuitive engineering of edge states. The confluence of transformation optics and topology here can be generalized to other wave realms beyond photonics.

Abstract:The notions of a topological phase and topological order were first introduced in the studies of integer and fractional quantum Hall effects, and further developed in the study of topological insulators and topological superconductors in the past decade. Topological concepts are now widely used in many branches of physics, not only limited to condensed matter systems but also in ultracold atomic systems, photonic materials and trapped ions. Papers published in this focus issue are direct testaments of that, and readers will gain a global view of how topology impacts different branches of contemporary physics. We hope that these pages will inspire new ideas through communication between different fields.

Abstract:Topological superconductors are novel classes of quantum condensed phases, characterized by topologically nontrivial structures of Cooper pairing states. On the surfaces of samples and in vortex cores of topological superconductors, Majorana fermions, which are particles identified with their own anti-particles, appear as Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The existence and stability of Majorana fermions are ensured by bulk topological invariants constrained by the symmetries of the systems. Majorana fermions in topological superconductors obey a new type of quantum statistics referred to as non-Abelian statistics, which is distinct from bose and fermi statistics, and can be utilized for application to topological quantum computation. Also, Majorana fermions give rise to various exotic phenomena such as "fractionalization", non-local correlation, and "teleportation". A pedagogical review of these subjects is presented. We also discuss interaction effects on topological classification of superconductors, and the basic properties of Weyl superconductors.

Abstract:Topological materials are capable of inherently robust transport and propagation of physical fields against disorder and perturbations, holding the promise of revolutionary technologies in a wide spectrum. Higher-order topological insulators are recently predicted as topological phases beyond the standard bulk-edge correspondence principle, however, their topological invariants have been proven very challenging to observe, even not possible yet by indirect ways. Here, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the topological invariants in two-dimensional systems can be directly revealed in real space by measuring single-photon bulk dynamics. By freely writing photonic lattices with femtosecond laser, we construct and identify the predicted second-order topological insulators, as well as first-order topological insulators with fractional topological winding number. Furthermore, we show that the accumulation and statistics on individual single-particle registrations can eventually lead to the same results of light waves, despite the fact that the development of topological physics was originally based on wave theories, sharing the same spirit of wave-particle nature in quantum mechanics. Our results offer a direct fashion of observing topological phases in two-dimensional systems and may inspire topologically protected artificial devices in high-order topology, high-dimension and quantum regime.
Sculpturing sound fields with real-space topology

Abstract:Artificial structures have been widely used to manipulate sound fields. Most properties of these structures derive from the material and geometry. Few are explicitly related to the structural topology in the real space. Here, we discover a fundamental connection between the real-space topology of acoustic structures and the topological properties of sound fields. We find that the genus of acoustic cavities can protect the birth of singularities in velocity polarization and isopressure line fields. The total topological index of the surface singularities is equal to the cavities' Euler characteristic. This intriguing relationship is rooted in the Poincare-Hopf theorem and is irrelevant to the specific material, geometric details, or excitation properties. The isopressure line singularities lead to acoustic hotspots and quiet zones. The velocity polarization singularities give rise to nontrivial polarization Mobius strips and skyrmion textures. The results enable sound sculpturing with structural topology and can find applications in acoustic communications, acoustic sensing, and noise control.

Abstract:Using Monte Carlo computer simulations, we study the impact of matter fields on the geometry of a typical quantum universe in the causal dynamical triangulations (cdt) model of lattice quantum gravity. The quantum universe has the size of a few Planck lengths and the spatial topology of a three-torus. The matter fields are multicomponent scalar fields taking values in a torus with circumference δ in each spatial direction, which acts as a new parameter in the cdt model. Changing δ, we observe a phase transition caused by the scalar field. This discovery may have important consequences for quantum universes with nontrivial topology, since the phase transition can change the topology to a simply connected one.

Abstract:The basic notion of how topoi can be utilized in physics is presented here. Topos and category theory serve as valuable tools which extend our ordinary set-theoretical conceptions, can further the study of quantum logic and give rise to new and 'neo-realistic' descriptions of quantum physics, i.e. make possible the construction of a general scheme for quantum physics, which 'looks like' the classical one. A novel way of writing theories of physics, by representing a formal language of a physical system, into an appropriate topos, is analyzed here. This novel approach is initiated by C.J. Isham and A. Doering and the major part of this paper comes from there; however there has been an effort in simplifying the basic ideas and do this work accessible to 'less experts' of the field. A minor, but not less important, part of this paper is devoted to resuming, in a concise way the background knowledge of logic, quantum logic and category theory, that is necessary for anyone who wishes to follow the whole topos approach.

Abstract:There are two prominent applications of the mathematical concept of topology to the physics of materials: band topology, which classifies different topological insulators and semimetals, and topological defects that represent immutable deviations of a solid lattice from its ideal crystalline form. While these two classes of topological phenomena have generally been treated as separate topics, recent experimental advancements have begun to probe their intricate and surprising interactions, in real materials as well as synthetic metamaterials. Topological lattice defects in topological materials offer a platform to explore a diverse range of novel phenomena, such as topological pumping via topological defects, embedded topological phases, synthetic dimensions, and non-Hermitian skin effects. In this Perspective, we survey the developments in this rapidly moving field, and give an outlook of its impact on materials science and applications.
