Abstract:To formulate the universal constraints of quantum statistics data of generic long-range entangled quantum systems, we introduce the geometric-topology surgery theory on spacetime manifolds where quantum systems reside, cutting and gluing the associated quantum amplitudes, specifically in 2+1 and 3+1 spacetime dimensions. First, we introduce the fusion data for worldline and worldsheet operators capable of creating anyonic excitations of particles and strings, well-defined in gapped states of matter with intrinsic topological orders. Second, we introduce the braiding statistics data of particles and strings, such as the geometric Berry matrices for particle-string Aharonov-Bohm, 3-string, 4-string, or multi-string adiabatic loop braiding process, encoded by submanifold linkings, in the closed spacetime 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds. Third, we derive new `quantum surgery' formulas and constraints, analogous to Verlinde formula associating fusion and braiding statistics data via spacetime surgery, essential for defining the theory of topological orders, 3d and 4d TQFTs and potentially correlated to bootstrap boundary physics such as gapless modes, extended defects, 2d and 3d conformal field theories or quantum anomalies. This article is meant to be an extended and further detailed elaboration of our previous work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05951" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05951">arXiv:1602.05951</a>] and Chapter 6 of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05569" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05569">arXiv:1602.05569</a>]. Our theory applies to general quantum theories and quantum mechanical systems, also applicable to, but not necessarily requiring the quantum field theory description.

On the structure of topological spaces

Abstract:The structure of topological spaces is analysed here through the lenses of fibrous preorders. Each topological space has an associated fibrous preorder and those fibrous preorders which return a topological space are called spacial. A special class of spacial fibrous preorders consisting of an interconnected family of preorders indexed by a unitary magma is called cartesian and studied here. Topological spaces that are obtained from those fibrous preorders, with a unitary magma \emph{I}, are called \emph{I}-cartesian and characterized. The characterization reveals a hidden structure of such spaces. Several other characterizations are obtained and special attention is drawn to the case of a monoid equipped with a topology. A wide range of examples is provided, as well as general procedures to obtain topologies from other data types such as groups and their actions. Metric spaces and normed spaces are considered as well.

From Humean Laws to a Neo-Kantian Spacetime: A Dynamics-First View of Topology

Abstract:Do the spacetime manifolds which feature in our best scientific theories reflect anything metaphysically weighty in the world (e.g., any fundamental substances or relations)? Should we extend our notions of space and time beyond the epistemological roles they play in helping us codify the dynamical behavior of matter? Kant famously answered ``No'' to both of these questions, contra Newton and Leibniz. This paper introduces novel technical and philosophical support for such a (Neo-)Kantian perspective on the metaphysics of space and time. To begin, I will make an explicit analogy between broadly Humean views of laws (e.g., Lewis, Demarest, etc.) and dynamics-first views of geometry (e.g., Brown). I will then continue this line of analogous views beyond the metaphysics of laws debate and the dynamical vs geometric spacetime debate by extending it into the context of spacetime topology. Namely, I will put forward a dynamics-first view of topology (in answer to Norton's problem of pre-geometry). This dynamics-first view of topology is supported by some powerful new techniques for topological redescription which I have recently developed in Grimmer (2023a) and Grimmer (2023b), namely the ISE Method. These new techniques allow us to remove and replace the topological underpinnings of our spacetime theories just as easily as we can switch between different coordinate systems. For instance, a theory set on a Möbius strip might be redescribed as being set on the Euclidean plane and vice versa. Indeed, as Grimmer (2023b) has proved, the ISE Method gives us access to effectively every possible spacetime framing of a given theory's kinematical and dynamical content. Given this overabundance of candidate spacetime framings, it is then conceivable that one can pick out a theory's topological structure via something analogous to a Best Systems Analysis.

Abstract:We investigate structure that describes physical data in gravitational systems that is, to one degree or another, independent of the metric and affine structure. We dub such structure surplus structure and seek to incorporate it into our ontological commitments. An emphasis is placed on those structures which are required to constrain our models motivated by physical data. We look at the fall-offs of the gauge fields in asymptotically flat spacetimes, the computation of entanglement entropies in the AdS/CFT correspondence, and the addition of arbitrary parameters which modify the causal structure of spacetime in Kruskal coordinates. We also present a historical overview of the understanding of singularities in classical gravitation. Primary sources are turned to here. A toy cosmological model is also explored in which global topology is determined by an additional function which we prescribe as a dynamical $\Lambda$. Such surplus structure is classified using the language of intermediaries and positioned within the system of a shifting-scale ontology as introduced in prior work.

Complex Structures for Klein-Gordon Theory on Globally Hyperbolic Spacetimes

Abstract:We develop a rigorous method to parametrize complex structures for Klein-Gordon theory in globally hyperbolic spacetimes that satisfy a completeness condition. The complex structures are conserved under time-evolution and implement unitary quantizations. They can be interpreted as corresponding to global choices of vacuum. The main ingredient in our construction is a system of operator differential equations. We provide a number of theorems ensuring that all ingredients and steps in the construction are well-defined. We apply the method to exhibit natural quantizations for certain classes of globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In particular, we consider static, expanding and Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Moreover, for a huge class of spacetimes we prove that the differential equation for the complex structure is given by the Gelfand-Dikki equation.

Abstract:Kendall's Similarity Shape Theory for constellations of points in the carrier space $\mathbb{R}^n$ was developed for use in Probability and Statistics. It was subsequently shown to reside within (Classical and Quantum) Mechanics' Shape-and-Scale Theory, in which the points are interpreted as particles and the carrier space plays the role of absolute space. In other more recent work, Kendall's Similarity Shape Theory has been generalized to affine, projective, conformal and supersymmetric versions, as well as to $\mathbb{T}^n$, $\mathbb{S}^n$, $\mathbb{RP}^n$ and Minkowski spacetime carrier spaces. This has created a sizeable field of study: generalized Kendall-type Geometrical Shape(-and-Scale) Theory. Aside from offering a wider range of shape-statistical applications, this field of study is an exposition of models of Background Independence of relevance to the Absolute versus Relational Motion Debate, and the Foundations and Dynamics of General Relativity and Quantum Gravity. In the current article, we consider a simpler type of Shape Theory, comprising relatively few types of behaviour: the Topological Shape Theory of rubber shapes. This underlies the above much greater diversity of more structured Shape Theories; in contrast with the latter's (stratified) manifolds shape spaces, the former's are just graphs. We give examples of these graphs for the smallest nontrivial point-or-particle numbers, and outline how these feature within a wider range of Geometric Shape Theories' shape spaces, and are furthermore straightforward to do Statistics, Dynamics and Quantization with.

Abstract:Topology plays a fundamental role in our understanding of many-body physics, from vortices and solitons in classical field theory to phases and excitations in quantum matter. Topological phenomena are intimately connected to the distribution of information content that, differently from ordinary matter, is now governed by nonlocal degrees of freedom. However, a precise characterization of how topological effects govern the complexity of a many-body state, i.e., its partition function, is presently unclear. In this paper, we show how topology and complexity are directly intertwined concepts in the context of classical statistical mechanics. We concretely present a theory that shows how the Kolmogorov complexity of a classical partition function sampling carries unique, distinctive features depending on the presence of topological excitations in the system. We confront two-dimensional Ising, Heisenberg, and XY models on several topologies and study the corresponding samplings as high-dimensional manifolds in configuration space, quantifying their complexity via the intrinsic dimension. While for the Ising and Heisenberg models the intrinsic dimension is independent of the real-space topology, for the XY model it depends crucially on temperature: across the Berezkinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, complexity becomes topology dependent. In the BKT phase, it displays a characteristic dependence on the homology of the real-space manifold, and, for g -torii, it follows a scaling that is solely genus dependent. We argue that this behavior is intimately connected to the emergence of an order parameter in data space, the conditional connectivity, which displays scaling behavior. Abstract:In present work the generalization of Einstein's special theory of relativity on 5-dimentional space is considered, in which as fifth coordinates we consider the interval s of a particle. 5-dimentional vectors in this space are isotropic both for mass, and for massless of particles. In extended space, offered by the authors, there is a possibility in addition with usual Lorentz transformations, to enter two new transformations, therefore massive and massless of a particle can reversible converted to each other.

On the Topological Nature of Fundamental Interactions

Abstract:A thought experiment is proposed to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity. The central paradigm is that space-time {\it topology} is ultimately responsible for the Heisenberg uncertaintly principle. It is found that Plankian space-time exhibits a complicated, but also definite, multiply connected character. In this framework, an analysis of the interactions in Nature is presented. I. The Universal ground state of the constructed theory derives from the properties of the topological manifold $Q=2T^3\oplus 3S^1\times S^2$, which has 23 intrinsic degrees of freedom, discrete $Z_3$ and $Z_2\times Z_3$ internal groups, an SU(5) gauge group, and leads to a U(1) symmetry on a lattice. The structure of $Q$ provides a unique equation motion for the mass-energy and particle rest mass wave functions. In its excited state the Universe is characterized by a lattice of three-tori, $L(T^3)$. The topological identifications present in this structure, a direct reflection of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, provide the boundary conditions for solutions to the equation of motion, and suggest an interpretation for the conceptually difficult concept of quantum mechanical entanglement. II. In the second half of the paper the (observable) properties of $Q$ and $L(T^3)$ are investigated. One reproduces the standard model, and the theory naturally contains a Higgs field with possible inflation. The electron and its neutrino are identified as particle ground states and their masses, together with those of all other known particles, are predicted. A mass of $m_{\rm H}=131.6$ GeV is found for the Higgs boson. [Abridged]

Abstract:The Einstein field equations of general relativity constrain the local curvature at every point in spacetime, but say nothing about the global topology of the Universe. Cosmic microwave background anisotropies have proven to be the most powerful probe of non-trivial topology since, within $\Lambda$CDM, these anisotropies have well-characterized statistical properties, the signal is principally from a thin spherical shell centered on the observer (the last scattering surface), and space-based observations nearly cover the full sky. The most generic signature of cosmic topology in the microwave background is pairs of circles with matching temperature and polarization patterns. No such circle pairs have been seen above noise in the WMAP or Planck temperature data, implying that the shortest non-contractible loop around the Universe through our location is longer than 98.5% of the comoving diameter of the last scattering surface. We translate this generic constraint into limits on the parameters that characterize manifolds with each of the nine possible non-trivial orientable Euclidean topologies, and provide a code which computes these constraints. In all but the simplest cases, the shortest non-contractible loop in the space can avoid us, and be shorter than the diameter of the last scattering surface by a factor ranging from 2 to at least 6. This result implies that a broader range of manifolds is observationally allowed than widely appreciated. Probing these manifolds will require more subtle statistical signatures than matched circles, such as off-diagonal correlations of harmonic coefficients.

Abstract:Spacetime is represented by ordered sequences of topologically closed Poincare sections of the primary space constructed of primary empty cells. These mappings are constrained to provide homeomorphic structures serving as frames of reference in order to account for the successive positions of any objects present in the system. Mappings from one to the next section involve morphisms of the general structures. Discrete properties of the lattice allow the prediction of scales at which microscopic to cosmic structures should occur. Deformations of primary cells by exchange of empty set cells allow a cell to be mapped into an image cell in the next section as far as mapped cells remain homeomorphic. If a deformation involves a fractal transformation to objects, there occurs a change in the dimension of the cell and the homeomorphism is not conserved. The fractal kernel stands for a "particle" and the reduction of its volume is compensated by morphic changes of a finite number of surrounding cells. Quanta of distances and quanta of fractality are demonstrated. The interaction of a moving particle-like deformation with the surrounding lattice involves a fractal decomposition process that supports the existence and properties of previously postulated inerton clouds as associated to particles. Experimental evidence and further possibilities of the existence of inertons are proposed.

Abstract:Fractal geometries, characterized by self-similar patterns and non-integer dimensions, provide an intriguing platform for exploring topological phases of matter. In this work, we introduce a theoretical framework that leverages isospectral reduction to effectively simplify complex fractal structures, revealing the presence of topologically protected boundary and corner states. Our approach demonstrates that fractals can support topological phases, even in the absence of traditional driving mechanisms such as magnetic fields or spin-orbit coupling. The isospectral reduction not only elucidates the underlying topological features but also makes this framework broadly applicable to a variety of fractal systems. Furthermore, our findings suggest that these topological phases may naturally occur in materials with fractal structures found in nature. This work opens new avenues for designing fractal-based topological materials, advancing both theoretical understanding and experimental exploration of topology in complex, self-similar geometries.

Abstract:If the Universe has non-trivial spatial topology, observables depend on both the parameters of the spatial manifold and the position and orientation of the observer. In infinite Euclidean space, most cosmological observables arise from the amplitudes of Fourier modes of primordial scalar curvature perturbations. Topological boundary conditions replace the full set of Fourier modes with specific linear combinations of selected Fourier modes as the eigenmodes of the scalar Laplacian. We present formulas for eigenmodes in orientable Euclidean manifolds with the topologies $E_{1}-E_{6}$, $E_{11}$, $E_{12}$, $E_{16}$, and $E_{18}$ that encompass the full range of manifold parameters and observer positions, generalizing previous treatments. Under the assumption that the amplitudes of primordial scalar curvature eigenmodes are independent random variables, for each topology we obtain the correlation matrices of Fourier-mode amplitudes (of scalar fields linearly related to the scalar curvature) and the correlation matrices of spherical-harmonic coefficients of such fields sampled on a sphere, such as the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We evaluate the detectability of these correlations given the cosmic variance of the observed CMB sky. We find that topologies where the distance to our nearest clone is less than about 1.2 times the diameter of the last scattering surface of the CMB give a correlation signal that is larger than cosmic variance noise in the CMB. This implies that if cosmic topology is the explanation of large-angle anomalies in the CMB, then the distance to our nearest clone is not much larger than the diameter of the last scattering surface. We argue that the topological information is likely to be better preserved in three-dimensional data, such as will eventually be available from large-scale structure surveys.

Composite Topological Structures in SO(10)

Abstract:We explore a variety of composite topological structures that arise from the spontaneous breaking of $SO(10)$ to $SU(3)_c \times U(1)_{em}$ via one of its maximal subgroups $SU(5) \times U(1)_\chi$, $SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$, and $SU(5) \times U(1)_X$ (also known as flipped $SU(5)$). They include i) a network of $\mathbb{Z}$ strings which develop monopoles and turn into necklaces with the structure of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ strings, ii) dumbbells connecting two different types of monopoles, or monopoles and antimonpoles, iii) starfish-like configurations, iv) polypole configurations, and v) walls bounded by a necklace. We display these structures both before and after the electroweak breaking. The appearance of these composite structures in the early universe and their astrophysical implications including gravitational wave emission would depend on the symmetry breaking patterns and scales, and the nature of the associated phase transitions.

Revealing Topology with Transformation Optics

Abstract:Symmetry deepens our insight into a physical system and its interplay with topology enables the discovery of topological phases. Symmetry analysis is conventionally performed either in the physical space of interest, or in the corresponding reciprocal space. Here we borrow the concept of virtual space from transformation optics to demonstrate how a certain class of symmetries can be visualised in a transformed, spectrally related coordinate space, illuminating the underlying topological transitions. By projecting a plasmonic system in a higher-dimensional virtual space onto a lower-dimensional system in real space, we show how transformation optics allows us to construct a topologically non-trivial system by inspecting its modes in the virtual space. Interestingly, we find that the topological invariant can be controlled via the singularities in the conformal mapping, enabling the intuitive engineering of edge states. The confluence of transformation optics and topology here can be generalized to other wave realms beyond photonics.
Sculpturing sound fields with real-space topology

Abstract:Artificial structures have been widely used to manipulate sound fields. Most properties of these structures derive from the material and geometry. Few are explicitly related to the structural topology in the real space. Here, we discover a fundamental connection between the real-space topology of acoustic structures and the topological properties of sound fields. We find that the genus of acoustic cavities can protect the birth of singularities in velocity polarization and isopressure line fields. The total topological index of the surface singularities is equal to the cavities' Euler characteristic. This intriguing relationship is rooted in the Poincare-Hopf theorem and is irrelevant to the specific material, geometric details, or excitation properties. The isopressure line singularities lead to acoustic hotspots and quiet zones. The velocity polarization singularities give rise to nontrivial polarization Mobius strips and skyrmion textures. The results enable sound sculpturing with structural topology and can find applications in acoustic communications, acoustic sensing, and noise control.

Abstract:In this paper we study topology-changing spacetimes occurring from pointlike sources. Following an old idea of Penrose, we will opt for a non-Hausdorff model of topology change in which an initial pointlike source is "doubled" and allowed to propagate along null rays into an eventual cobordism. By appealing to recent developments in non-Hausdorff differential geometry, we will describe and evaluate gravitational actions on these topology-changing spacetimes. Motivated by analogous results for the Trousers space, we describe a sign convention for Lorentzian angles that will ensure the dampening of our non-Hausdorff topology-changing spacetimes within a two-dimensional path integral for gravity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.064026 © 2024 American Physical Society
