Abstract:Existing heating terminals are inconsistent in terms of energy efficiency and thermal comfort. To address this issue, integrated convective/radiant terminals have been explored as a potential solution. In this study, a novel convective -adjustable, flat -panel radiant unit for heating was built and tested with respect to thermal performance. The flat panel, which acts as the radiant unit, wavy air heat exchanger fins, and a cross -flow fan were combined to realize convective adjustability. Using a direct -expansion and a water (solution) system, the influence of the flow mode, surface temperature, surface emissivity, and operative temperature on the thermal performance were investigated. In all, the heat output ranged from 130.3 to 228.3 and 234.4 to 390.2 W/m2. The heat transfer coefficient was 9.0 and 13.6 W/(m2 & sdot;K) without/with fan assist and with low emissivity conditions; by contrast, the heat output was 169.8 to 294.0 and 278.1 to 496.5 W/m2, and the heat transfer coefficient was 11.4 and 17.6 W/(m2 & sdot;K) without/with fan assist and with high emissivity for direct -expansion system. The results show that the performance of the novel design, exhibits in terms of heat transmission resistance and heat capacity, is superior to that of conventional heating terminals, especially the heat capacity is only 3.6 % compared with floor heating. Notably, the heat capacity is only 3.6 % compared with floor heating. Additionally, the heat transmission resistance and heat dissipation resistance values are close to fan coil unit, indicating effective intermittency in the developed radiant unit.
