Abstract:Geothermal water, salt lakes, and seawater all contain large quantities of valuable minerals such as brine and lithium. Lithium (Li), a range of non-metallic and metallic elements that are extracted from brine in various ranges, has attracted a lot of attention recently because of its rapidly increasing demand. Desalination's concentrated brine, a by-product, has a much greater amount of priceless minerals for Li extraction since it is superior to other brine sources. To meet the increased demand for Li, there has been significant progress achieved, most recently in the creation of innovative advancements that make salinity concentrate more quickly and effectively. This study's goal is to point out recent accomplishments in this sector, beginning with the relevance of Li extraction from brine and moving on to recent developments in the numerous without-evaporation approaches suggested in the written word. Regarding sustainability, economics, and likewise ideas, these technologies similarly present significant obstacles. To increase the overall effectiveness of the process, research must concentrate on hybrid technologies rather than standalone ones for the effective exploitation of desalination brines. To make these breakthrough technologies commercially feasible, techno- and socio-economic evaluations are also necessary.

Abstract:The demand for lithium has soared in recent years as the adoption of electric vehicles has grown rapidly, and lithium supply will need to grow another ~5x from current day to meet projected demand for lithium in 2030. To keep pace with this exponentially growing demand, novel methods of lithium sourcing are needed. Direct lithium extraction (DLE) from saltwater brines holds promise to unlock the lithium resources needed to power the electric vehicle revolution. Lithium is traditionally sourced via two methods. Open pit hard rock mining is the method which many are familiar with. In this method, rocks are excavated, roasted with sulfuric acid, and the eluent is processed to produce a pure lithium product. This is well known to be environmentally destructive, and it produces larges amounts of waste products. The second method employed to produce lithium chemicals is brine evaporation ponds. In this method, brine is pumped to a surface pond, often multiple acres across, and solar evaporation concentrates the lithium in the brine to the point that it can undergo further processing. This method is extremely land and water intensive, and local residents adjacent to such ponds are increasingly worried about the effects of such methods on local water tables. Electroflow employs a DLE process to convert brine directly into pure, battery grade lithium chemicals via a sustainable electrochemical process. Our electrochemical cell design enables extraction from dilute lithium brine resources with as low as 10 ppm Li, which unlocks huge swaths of new lithium resources across the globe, and specifically in North America. We use lithium-selective electrode materials as the basis for lithium separation from brine solutions, and this allows a new paradigm of DLE processes that have not yet been thoroughly studied. This talk will describe the operation of our technology and explore the impact that it could have at scale.

Abstract:Lithium is the principal component of high-energy-density batteries and is a critical material necessary for the economy and security of the United States. Brines from geothermal power production have been identified as a potential domestic source of lithium; however, lithium-rich geothermal brines are characterized by complex chemistry, high salinity, and high temperatures, which pose unique challenges for economic lithium extraction. The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze direct lithium extraction technology in the context of developing sustainable lithium production from geothermal brines. In this paper, we are focused on the challenges of applying direct lithium extraction technology to geothermal brines; however, applications to other brines (such as coproduced brines from oil wells) are considered. The most technologically advanced approach for direct lithium extraction from geothermal brines is adsorption of lithium using inorganic sorbents. Other separation processes include extraction using solvents, sorption on organic resin and polymer materials, chemical precipitation, and membrane-dependent processes. The Salton Sea geothermal field in California has been identified as the most significant lithium brine resource in the US and past and present efforts to extract lithium and other minerals from Salton Sea brines were evaluated. Extraction of lithium with inorganic molecular sieve ion-exchange sorbents appears to offer the most immediate pathway for the development of economic lithium extraction and recovery from Salton Sea brines. Other promising technologies are still in early development, but may one day offer a second generation of methods for direct, selective lithium extraction. Initial studies have demonstrated that lithium extraction and recovery from geothermal brines are technically feasible, but challenges still remain in developing an economically and environmentally sustainable process at scale.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industry, the demand for lithium resources is increasing. Traditional methods such as precipitation usually take 1–2 years, and depend on weather conditions. In addition, electrochemical lithium recovery (ELR) as a green chemical method has attracted a great deal of attention. Herein, we summarize the systems of electrochemical lithium extraction and the electrode materials of the Li-ion battery from brine/seawater. Some representative work on electrochemical lithium extraction is then introduced. Finally, we prospect the future opportunities and challenges of electrochemical lithium extraction. In all, this review explores electrochemical lithium extraction from brine/seawater in depth, with special attention to the systems and electrode of electrochemical lithium extraction, which could provide a useful guidance for reasonable electrochemical-lithium-extraction.

Abstract:Due to the abundant reserves and increasing demand, the extraction and separation of lithium from salt-lake brines have attracted great interest worldwide. This review aims to summarize the major developments in lithium recovery from brines, starting from an overview of lithium demand and consumption, available resources and processing methods, and challenges of processing brines, followed with the advancements in solvent extraction, ion-sieve adsorption, electrochemical approaches, and membrane technology, successively. The paper focuses on the principles, mechanisms, operations, and comparison of the various approaches. Other promising techniques, such as the modification of ion-sieves, rocking-chair batteries, and liquid-membrane electrodialysis, also are discussed in the depth of mechanisms. These processes present excellent performance in the separation of Li+/Mg2+ or Li+/Na+. Finally, insights into the directions and prospects of lithium extraction from brines are presented. It can be concluded that only by integrating the advantages of various recent technologies will it be possible to develop an efficient, low cost, environmentally sustainable, and scalable process for lithium extraction from brines.

Abstract:To meet the increasing lithium demands created by global electrification, a fast, flexible, inexpensive and sustainable mining process is needed, which is yet to be realized. Here we explore an untapped energy source that is inherent in all ion-separation processes to achieve spontaneous Li extraction with net energy production. The driving force comes from the huge concentration difference of counter ions (usually chloride) between the feeding and receiving solutions. Experimental results under various feeding compositions can be well explained by the Gibbs–Donnan equilibrium. Utilizing a Li-selective ceramic membrane and a chloride-storing silver electrode, we successfully achieved Li extraction from simulated brine with an energy output of 1.6 Wh mol Li −1 . The system is stable over 300 hours of operation, maintaining a high Li/Mg selectivity of 450. Moreover, even spontaneous enrichment can be achieved when the counter ion concentration is much greater than that of Li ion in the feeding brine. We anticipate that the concept of this work could not only reshape the Li supply chain but also seed a fundamental transformation of all ion-separation processes.

Abstract:Worldwide demand for lithium (Li) is surging due to increased production of Li-ion batteries to meet the needs for increasing numbers of electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems. Conventional Li+ extraction from Li-bearing ores and brines has drawbacks of high chemical and energy inputs. In this work, chemical redox-driven processes were developed to selectively extract Li+ from brine meant to simulate a geothermal resource. Using additives that modify the redox potential of soluble iron compounds, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citrate, the potential of the solution was shifted lower to drive reduction of a targeted solid electroactive material (FePO4, FP). Li+ from simulated brine sources (with molar ratio Li+:Na+ of 1:78) was extracted into the FP solid without additional energy inputs. The Li+ adsorption capacity for extraction with EDTA-Fe2+ solutions and Citrate-Fe2+ solutions were 3.8 mmol Li+ g-1 FP and 2.5 mmol Li+ g-1 FP, respectively, and the selectivity factors for Li+ to Na+ for the two systems were 78 and 350, respectively. Similar extraction outcomes were achieved using a brine that more closely resembled the composition of geothermal fluids from the Salton Sea. This study more broadly provided insight into enhancing Li+ capture selectivity through modification of redox solution compositions.

Development of an innovative and sustainable lithium extraction process from medium lithium grade brines

Abstract:The objective of the project is to develop and to demonstrate an innovative, sustainable and enhanced lithium extraction and metallurgical valorization process from medium grade lithium brines, the content of which ranges from 100 to 500 mg/L. The innovative process is viewed as an alternative process compared to the conventional production processes based on solar evaporation . The innovative process will be based on a selective solid-liquid extraction technology. A successful project would significantly increase lithium reserves worldwide and allow for industrialization of high quality lithium compounds for industrial applications such as the growing lithium ion battery market. A successful project will also allow to diversy the Li supply currently dominated by four players.

Abstract:The supply and demand of lithium resources are seriously unbalanced due to the rapid growth of energy storage technologies designed to meet proposed carbon emission reduction targets. Lithium resources in the form of liquid solutions, such as seawater, salt-lake brine, and underground brine contribute greatly to this development due to their low cost and relatively abundant reserves. Electrochemical methods are particularly promising to extract lithium from solutions due to their excellent selectivity, environmental friendliness, and low energy consumption. From the perspective of fundamental research on new technologies, it is critical to maximize lithium extraction ability as well as potential applications. In this paper, operation modes of electrochemical lithium extraction processes as well as significant developments of key electrode materials are reviewed. Trends in routes for development are analyzed, and future research directions are correspondingly identified.

Abstract:The sustainability of lithium-based energy storage or conversion systems, e.g., lithium-ion batteries, can be enhanced by establishing methods of efficient lithium extraction from harsh brines. In this work, we describe a decoupled membrane-free electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions between iron-phosphate electrodes and features cathode (brine) and anode (fresh water) compartments that are isolated from each other yet electrochemically connected through a pair of silver/silver-halide redox electrodes. This design is compatible with harsh brines having magnesium/lithium molar ratios of up to 3258 and lithium concentrations down to 0.15 millimolar, enabling the production of battery-grade (>99.95% pure) lithium carbonate. Energy savings of up to ~21.5% were realized by efficiently harvesting the osmotic energy of the brines. A pilot-scale cell with an electrode surface area of 33.75 square meters was used to realize lithium extraction from Dead Sea brine with a recovery rate of 84.0%.

Abstract:It is important to develop methods for efficient extraction of lithium from salt lake brine. However, the traditional lithium-extraction technology has various limitations, which make it difficult to increase its efficiency. Hence, it is highly important to explore new processes for lithium extraction. This paper systematically reviews the recent research on various coupled and tandem lithium-extraction technologies based on traditional lithium-extraction technology for extracting lithium from salt lake brine. When different technologies are coupled, their advantages aggregate, while their disadvantages become weaker, which, in turn, improves the lithium-extraction efficiency and makes the whole process simpler and environmentally friendly, with reduced energy consumption. For emerging coupling/tandem processes, the characteristics, applicability, and energy consumption of each method are analyzed based on the principle, characteristics, and performance of each technology. This review also discusses the direction that the future development of the process should take, according to the current development level of the process. Most of the discussed methods have completed laboratory-scale testing. Hence, future research should focus on pilot-scale development and optimization of the parameters and process involved. The cross-fusion and synergy of different methods provide ideas and references for better development and application of lithium-extraction processes.

Abstract:Lithium sources are of great significance for developing the next generation of lithium ion batteries. Most of the world’s lithium sources are found in salt lake brines. The main challenge of lithium extraction from salt lake brine is the separation of lithium ions from other coexisting ions, especially the separation of Li + and Mg 2+ . However, the traditional precipitation method for salt lake lithium extraction is cumbersome. In this project, a new electrolytic device with a solid-state electrolyte was developed for high-efficient lithium extraction from salt lake brines. Li 1+x Al x Ti 2−x (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is a promising NASICON-type solid-state electrolyte, which exhibits high ionic conductivity ( >10 -4 S/cm) at room temperature. LATP can be used as a lithium ion conductor, that is only lithium ions can transfer through it, which is ideal for separating lithium ions from other ions in salt lake brines. In this project, high-quality LATP was fabricated at a low cost. An electrolytic device was developed for lithium extraction, in which LATP was used together with a sacrificial anode, molten salts, and an inert cathode. Salt lake brines need to be concentrated by solar and/or wind evaporation before lithium extraction. The electrolytic device was operated above the melting point of the concentrated brine water, at which LATP exhibits a higher ionic conductivity for fast lithium ion transfer. A tiny voltage was applied across the two electrodes to drive the electrochemical reaction. The composition of lithium sources before and after extraction was investigated by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Results show that lithium sources with a higher purity level were successfully extracted with high efficiency. Impurity ions were almost completely blocked by LATP.

Abstract:The importance of lithium resources has gradually increased with the research and promotion of lithium batteries. Lithium extraction from salt lake has become a major trend due to the abundance of lithium resources. However, there are plenty of interfering ions in the brine, especially magnesium ions containing concentration ratios of several to tens, which are difficult to separate due to the similar radius of hydrated ions. And membrane method has the advantages of being environmentally friendly, simple, and good separation effect, which is an important research direction for lithium extraction from salt lake. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of several common membrane-based methods for lithium separation, especially focusing on pressure-driven and electric-driven methods, and a comprehensive assessment of advantages and disadvantages between the different methods in terms of lithium extraction efficiency, durability, energy consumption, environmental friendliness, and technological maturity. The shortcomings of them are also presented, for example, current processes are still limited by membrane lifetime, device cost, separation efficiency, and the processes are not mature enough to achieve a complete process from source to product. Therefore, the future directions are focused on membrane materials, membrane antifouling performance, process development, and process integrity testing.

Abstract:Evaporitic technology for lithium mining from brines has been questioned for its intensive water use, protracted duration and exclusive application to continental brines. In this Review, we analyse the environmental impacts of evaporitic and alternative technologies, collectively known as direct lithium extraction (DLE), for lithium mining, focusing on requirements for fresh water, chemicals, energy consumption and waste generation, including spent brines. DLE technologies aim to tackle the environmental and techno–economic shortcomings of current practice by avoiding brine evaporation. A selection of DLE technologies has achieved Li + recovery above 95%, Li + /Mg 2+ separation above 100, and zero chemical approaches. Conversely, only 30% of DLE test experiments were performed on real brines, and thus the effect of multivalent ions or large Na + /Li + concentration differences on performance indicators is often not evaluated. Some DLE technologies involve brine pH changes or brine heating up to 80 o C for improved Li + recovery, which require energy, fresh water and chemicals that must be considered during environmental impact assessments. Future research should focus on performing tests on real brines and achieving competitiveness in several performance indicators simultaneously. The environmental impact of DLE should be assessed from brine pumping to the production of the pure solid lithium product.
