Abstract:On this 30th anniversary of the founding of the Artificial Life journal, I share some personal reflections on my own history of engagement with the field, my own particular assessment of its current status, and my vision for its future development. At the very least, I hope to stimulate some necessary critical conversations about the field of Artificial Life and where it is going.

Abstract:The UN Law of the Sea Convention (LOSC) was negotiated during the greatest upwelling of enlightened environmental thought in the 1970s. The critical backdrop to the negotiations that led to significant environment-focused provisions to protect the world's oceans was a period encapsulated by the 'tragedy of the commons' debate and emerging sustainability concerns, rights of statehood for newly independent countries, and recognition of the need to support the development aspirations of lesser-developed States. There were high hopes among commentators at the time that the LOSC would contribute to the orderly development of the world's ocean-related activities and the protection of the marine environment. LOSC drafters tackled head-on pollution as one of the most pressing marine environmental challenges. LOSC also paved the way for the development of more specific international instruments to address various marine environmental challenges. The 40-year mark of the text being concluded and LOSC open for signature is an appropriate time to reflect on the contribution of the LOSC to marine environmental protection.

Abstract:In late December 1973, the United States enacted what some would come to call "the pitbull of environmental laws." In the 50 years since, the formidable regulatory teeth of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) have been credited with considerable successes, obliging agencies to draw upon the best available science to protect species and habitats. Yet human pressures continue to push the planet toward extinctions on a massive scale. With that prospect looming, and with scientific understanding ever changing, Science invited experts to discuss how the ESA has evolved and what its future might hold. —Brad Wible

Abstract:This article updates the author's article which opens this issue, and responds to the other contributions. Composed over the winter of 2011–2012, the opening paper was commissioned for a private conference held in Europe. The difficulties academics from Israel or Palestine (and elsewhere) experience in convening to discuss the subject matter explain why the conference was private. It was not officially conceived as a ‘track-two’ contribution to the possibilities of a peace initiative from the second Obama administration, or from the European Union, but it was intimated that such possibilities might shape the paper.

Environment Science and Policy for Sustainable Development

Abstract:The first publisher of Silent Spring reportedly said that Rachel Carson made concern about pesticides into "literature." What keeps Silent Spring in print today is not the details of the science she includes, current in the mid twentieth century, but how she helps readers think about scientific issues as accessible and transformational for them. Carson was also bluntly candid when she needed to be: "A quarter century ago, cancer in children was considered a medical rarity. Today, more American school children die of cancer than from any other disease." Carson could change tone, pace, and rhetorical strategies as needed, to make her arguments effective and memorable—and we can learn from that how to reach a general public now once more ignorant of danger surrounding them.

Abstract:In the rapidly moving field of stem cell and embryo research, research questions often sit at the intersection of scientific inquiry and ethical considerations. The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) produces guidelines to help navigate decisions in this area. For Cell's 50th Anniversary Focus on Developmental Biology, scientific editor Sarah Geisler discussed the importance of the ISSCR guidelines on stem cell and embryo research for both the stem cell community and the broader public with Amander Clark, Robin Lovell-Badge, and Janet Rossant, who have been involved in the ongoing evolution of the guidelines. A lightly edited transcript of their conversation is shared here.

Fiftieth Anniversary of Uncovering the Tuskegee Syphilis Study: The Story and Timeless Lessons

Abstract:This year marks the 50th anniversary of the uncovering of the Tuskegee syphilis study, when the public learned that the Public Health Service (precursor of the CDC) for 40 years intentionally withheld effective therapy against a life-threatening illness in 400 African American men. In 2010, we learned that the same research group had deliberately infected hundreds of Guatemalans with syphilis and gonorrhea in the 1940s, with the goal of developing better methods for preventing these infections. Despite 15 journal articles detailing the results, no physician published a letter criticizing the Tuskegee study. Informed consent was never sought; instead, Public Health Service researchers deceived the men into believing they were receiving expert medical care. The study is an especially powerful parable because readers can identify the key players in the narrative and recognize them as exemplars of people they encounter in daily life-these flesh-and-blood characters convey the principles of research ethics more vividly than a dry account in a textbook of bioethics. The study spurred reforms leading to fundamental changes in the infrastructure of research ethics. The reason people fail to take steps to halt behavior that in retrospect everyone judges reprehensible is complex. Lack of imagination, rationalization, and institutional constraints are formidable obstacles. The central lessons from the study are the need to pause and think, reflect, and examine one's conscience; the courage to speak; and above all the willpower to act. History, although about the past, is our best defense against future errors and transgressions.
Remembering The Sane Society: An American Lament

Abstract:Erich Fromm's book The Sane Society was published in 1955, the second year of President's Eisenhower's administration, but had a profound impact on the ideas and agendas of social activists during the 60s and 70s, including this author. Its central theses were that the middle-class prosperity characteristic of that era masked a "pathology of normalcy," and that capitalism transforms active citizens into passive consumers by compelling people to fill their material needs in ways that are at variance with their existential or human needs. The result is a dramatic diminution of their critical faculties, an atrophy of conscience, and the proliferation of a "marketing character," a kind of alienated, hedonistic lifestyle whose emptiness is palliated by the consumption of ever larger quantities of consumer goods. Fromm's analysis still rings true in some respects, but the middle-class prosperity and bland uniformity of opinion he critiqued began to wane in the late 1970s, gradually giving way to sharp extremes of poverty and wealth. The resulting political polarization has now reached a critical point, where the future of American democracy – or what little is left of it – is now in peril. So, as we approach 2025, Fromm's analysis of America in the mid-20th century must be updated and modified to fit the contours of contemporary social realities. In so doing, however, we discover that American society is even more alienated, more atomized and fragile than it was in Fromm's day.

Abstract:“What is Library Science” was a classical document guiding the way at the turning point of history, the issuing of which started a big discussion during that period and soon after suffered from criticism and being misled. By reviewing this article by Liu Guojun, we feel that, as a prestigious scholar and a great master of a library science, his thoughts and viewpoints still have guiding significance today. We think that it will play a significant role in promoting the theoretical construction of library science that strengthening the research of academic history.

A new generation of writers needed fresher ways to tell more relevant stories, and without benefit of salon, left bank, coffee house or writers' colony, individual talents of all ages, several sexes, many different backgrounds and disciplines caused a self-fulfilling prophecy. They caused to be created forums in which they could do what they longed to do. That it happened almost at the same time on both sides of the Atlantic, with over a hundred different writers--many of whom had no connection with their sf brothers and sisters--should be proof enough to even the most concretized of sf's observers.

Abstract:When the Journal of Medical Ethics first appeared in April 1975, the prospects of success seemed uncertain. There were no scholars specialising in the field, the readership could not be guaranteed, and the medical profession itself seemed, at the very least, ambivalent about a subject thought by many to be the province of doctors alone, to be acquired through an apprenticeship model, and certainly not taught or examined in any formal sense. However, change was afoot, fresh scandals created an awareness that outside help was needed to think through the new challenges facing the profession, and the success of the medical groups revealed a clear way forward through multidisciplinary and critically reflective discussion of the host of emerging ethical and legal issues. In this article the formative years of the journal are recaptured, with a claim that the core principles on which it was founded must endure if it is to continue to 'do good medical ethics' over the next 40 years.

Abstract:The poet's language can evoke strong emotions, in contrast with effective science writing, which consists of short sentences with single ideas embedded within strictly limited paragraphs of 10–15 lines. This description might be interpreted as a prescription for science writing formal verse, but it is not. However, there are those among us who are gifted in storytelling that bridges the gap between the public and science communities. This issue has produced a wide range of commentary on the intersection of biology and public awareness and the importance of language that makes this communication successful. Rogayan tells us about an important environmentalist influencer, Celine Murillo, in "Green-fluencer speaks: Mainstreaming Philippine biodiversity through social media" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae055), who is able to effectively engage the public on the importance of biodiversity through the use of local names in the people's first language. Rogayan's Letter was motivated by Fish and colleagues' earlier article in BioScience , "Language matters for biodiversity" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae014), and who so eloquently comment in their response, "Lingua franca or lingua cultura? Understanding the language of biodiversity" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae076), that the rich and diverse culture of human language reveals the "often remarkable and rather imaginative ways in which biodiversity comes to be understood by people through language-based experience." Following this theme, in "The Pocosin's lesson" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae078), Emanuel, in a Thinking of Biology contribution, provides an example of the importance of developing genuine relationships with people who have deep, multigenerational expertise about the places we work and the importance of employing humility as we seek to learn about those places. Euro-American colonization of the United States caused the devasting loss of important Indigenous knowledge, and for those of us who are not indigenous to the places where we work, we have an obligation to not add to the loss by creating false "knowledge."
