Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between adult dental anxiety and oral health status, and access the related factors contribute to dental anxiety. Methods A total of 1 203 dental patients completed a questionnaire that contained Corah” s dental anxiety scales ( DAS ) and dental fear survey ( DFS ) . The general characteristics were de-scribed, such as socio-demographic, dental attendances and oral health status. Results The prevalence of high dental anxiety ( DAS≥13) was 23. 4%. The regression analysis indicated that gender, age, education, dental attendances and oral health status were correlated with dental anxiety. The level of dental anxiety of patients with regular scaling was sig-nificant decreased. Patients with ‘always bleeding on brushing” and ‘always dentine hypersensitivity” had significantly higher level of dental anxiety. ‘Drilling with the handpiece” and ‘injecting the anesthetic” were the most important fac-tors to contribute to dental anxiety. Conclusion There was high prevalence of dental anxiety in Chinese adult patients. The level of dental anxiety may influence by oral health status and awareness.
Dental Fear and Its Possible Relationship with Periodontal Status in Chinese Adults: A Preliminary Study

Abstract:Background: The aim of the present study was to describe the characteristics of dental fear of Chinese adult patients with periodontal disease and provide information for clinical assessment.Methods: A total of 1203 dental patients completed questionnaires that included Corach's Dental Anxiety Scales (DAS), Dental Fear Survey (DFS) and the short-form Dental Anxiety Inventory (S-DAI). Among all the patients, 366 cases were self-reported periodontal disease. The general characteristics were described, such as socio-demographics, dental attendances and oral health behaviors. The statistical analysis was performed by t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and linear regression respectively to evaluate correlations between dental fear and general characteristics according to the three scales.Results: The prevalence of dental fear was 74% among 1203 patients, 23.4% of total with high dental fear, while 27.3% in the patients with periodontal disease. The average score of DAS and DFS for patients with periodontal disease was significantly higher than those without periodontal disease. The regression analysis indicated that gender, age, periodontal status, dental attendances and oral health behaviors were correlated with dental fear. Among 366 patients with periodontal disease, gender, dental attendances and oral health behaviors had correlation with dental fear. The analysis of DFS scale exhibited that 'drilling with handpiece' and 'injecting the anesthetic' were the most important factors to contribute to dental fear.Conclusions: There was high prevalence of dental fear in Chinese adult patients, particularly in patients with periodontal disease, and high level of dental fear may lead to poor periodontal status.

Abstract:[Objective]To determine the prevalence of dental anxiety(DA) in the elderly in old-age care institutions.[Methods]The prevalence of DA in 140 elders was investigated by using the modified Dental Anxiety Scale(MDAS).[Results]The mean MDAS score was 6.8071±3.2848 in the elderly in old-age care institutions.The prevalence rate of DA was 7.86%.Among the elders,there was significant difference for the comparison of MDAS scores in degree of education,different pain tolerance and experiences of dental care.The order of factors about MDAS scores were(from high to low):pain tolerance,age,mental state,degree of education,character,experiences of dental care,oral hygiene,family financial situations, relatives experiences of dental care,gender and health situation.The pain tolerance had highly significant influence among these factors. [Conclusions]The prevalence rate of DA was low in the elderly in old-age care institutions.The prevalence of DA was significantly influenced by difference in pain tolerance and age.
Current Status and Influencing Factors of Dental Anxiety among Elders in Communities of Hangzhou City

Abstract:To explore the current status and influencing factors of dental anxiety among the elders in communities of Hangzhou. A total of 600 elders were selected by multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling and examined by Coarh's dental anxiety scale (DAS). The status and influencing factors of dental anxiety among them were analyzed by single and multi-factor analysis methods. A total of 596 questionnaires were answered 99.3%(596/600). And there were 573 valid questionnaires with a validity rate of 96.1%(573/596). The respondents' DAS score was 7.51±3.18. Their prevalence rate of DA was 34.9%. Among them, there was significant difference for the comparison of prevalence rate of DA in gender, age, different pain tolerance and experiences of dental care (χ2=9.45, 18.24, 33.34, 38.66, 12.62, P<0.05). The results of logistic regression model showed that there was a higher risk of DA occurrence among females, age, poor pain tolerance and elders with painful dental experiences. Gender, age, pain tolerance and experiences of dental care are influencing factors of oral health behaviors among the elders in communities of Hangzhou. Key words: Elder; Dental anxiety

Abstract:Objective To understand the current status of dental anxiety(DA)and it's influencing factors among the elderly in communities of Hangzhou. Methods A total of 600seniors were randomly selected by multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method and surveyed using the Coarh's Dental Anxiety Scale(DAS). One-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results 573out of 600questionnaires qualified for the study were retrieved.The average DAS score was 7.51±3.18.The prevalence of high DA was 6.1%.One-way ANOVA showed that the differences of DA scores were significant among seniors with gender,age,monthly income,pain tolerance,experience of dental care and oral hygiene(P<0.05).Meanwhile,multiple linear regression analysis revealed that pain tolerance,gender,age and monthly income were closely related to the DAS score.Usually,seniors of female with younger age,low income and poor pain tolerance were more likely to have higher scores of DA. Conclusions The prevalence of high DA is low among the elderly in communities of Hangzhou city.Pain tolerance,gender,age and monthly income are influencing factors for DA.

Abstract:A direct, rapid and continuous in vivo monitoring of diffusible calcium in the blood of living rabbits has been developed using microdialysis sampling coupled on-line with flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Microdialysates perfused through implanted microdialysis probes were collected with a sample loop on an injection valve and directly introduced into the flame atomizer by a carrier solution. An ultrapure saline solution (0.9% NaCl, pH 7.2) was used as the perfusion solution at a flow rate of 20 μl min^−1 via the microdialysis probe. A 0.1% La solution in 0.5% HNO_3 solution was employed as the carrier solution at a nebulizer uptake flow rate of 2.5 ml min^−1. The interval for each determination was 2.5 min (2 min of sampling time, 20 s of read time and 10 s of washing time). The performance characteristics of the on¬line microdialysis-FAAS system were validated as follows: linearity range, 0-100 mg l^−1; detection limit (3 σ, n = 7), 3.66 mg l^−1; precision (RSD, n = 50), 6.2%. For the evaluation of analytical accuracy, the proposed on-line method was compared with the in vivo no net flux method. The use of an on-line microdialysis-FAAS system permitted the in situ , dynamic and continuous in vivo monitoring of diffusible calcium in the blood of the living rabbits after CaCl_2 administration with a temporal resolution of 2.5 min.

Abstract:Introduction Dental anxiety and fear is widely prevalent in the population, including children. This research is a further analysis of the Child Dental Health Survey 2013, to explore the impact of dental anxiety on factors relating to oral health.Aim To explore the relationship between dental anxiety and oral health and the impact dental anxiety has on the quality of family life.Design Regression analysis of data of 4,916 children aged 5 years and 8 years who participated in the Child Dental Health Survey 2013.Setting National Epidemiological Survey in schools in the UK.Materials and methods A series of logistic regression analyses was carried out for markers of oral health and impact of the child's oral health on the family's quality of life. The variables entered as predictors in the models included dental anxiety, socio demographic status and oral health-related behaviours.Results Dental anxiety was associated with poorer oral health on nearly all measures (decay experience p = <0.001, active decay p = <0.001, primary tooth being restored p = 0.010, signs of oral infection p = 0.007) and had a greater impact on their family's quality of life (p = <0.001).Conclusions Dentally anxious children have more dental disease and this has a greater impact on their family's quality of life.

Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical related factors of dental anxiety in adult outpatients. Methods A total of 376 adult patients who were treated in Odontopathy Prevention Institute and the dental clinic of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University from June to October 2017 were enrolled. The dental anxiety scale (DAS) was used to assess the occurrence of dental anxiety. SPSS 18.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results There were 50 adult outpatients with anxiety or severe anxiety and 326 cases without anxiety. There was no statistically significant difference in degree of education between the two groups (4/26, 6//27, 10/74, 30/199, χ2=0.83, P>0.05). However, significant differences were found in the age (27/98, 12/96, 11/44), gender (42/181, 8/145), dental treatment history (7/11, 43/315) and childhood dental psychological fear (12/128, 38/198) between two groups(χ2=18.37, 14.57, 10.74, 4.32, all P<0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression was used to analyze the association of factors affecting dental anxiety. The results showed that it was significantly correlated with age (OR=50.66, 3.37), gender (OR=65.25), history of dental treatment (OR=14.22) and childhood dental psychological fear (OR=3.64) (all P<0.05). Conclusions Adult dental anxiety is common in clinical practices. There is a close relationship between the occurrence of anxiety and the patient′s gender, age, history of dental treatment and childhood dental psychological fear. Abstract:After analyzing the characteristics of the user in the human-computer interaction process, a user model and an interaction model based on multi-agent intelligence have been set up respectively, and a kind of interaction protocol for eye gazing interaction has been proposed. To verify the models and protocol, some experiments have been done mainly with the eye gazing human-computer interface (HCI), and the results show that the problems which used to exist in the similar interaction processes have been overcome, moreover, the prompt messages from the computer, when it is working, have enforced the user's learning ability by multimedia, such as vision and voice.

Abstract:Objectives This study aimed to assess the association between affordability in terms of difficulty paying dental bills in Australian dollars and dental service use in the presence of sociodemographic confounders, and to assess the role of dental anxiety and satisfaction with dental professionals as mediators. The second aim was to investigate how dental anxiety and satisfaction with dental professionals modify the association between affordability and use of dental services in Australian adults. Methods Longitudinal data from the Australian National Study of Adult Oral Health (2004–06 and 2017–18) was used. Poisson regression and path analysis were conducted to determine the association between affordability and frequency of use of dental services. Effect measure modification (EMM) analysis was performed by stratification of dental anxiety and satisfaction with dental professionals. Results The study included 1698 Australian adults and identified that the prevalence of low frequency of dental visits was 20% more for those who had difficulty paying dental bills. Adults with dental anxiety (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.14) and those who were dissatisfied with dental professionals (PR = 1.17) had a higher prevalence of low frequency of dental visits in the presence of difficulty paying dental bills. This indicated that dental anxiety and dissatisfaction with dental professionals were effect modifiers on this pathway. Conclusions Adults who experience dental anxiety and dissatisfaction with dental professionals are more likely to avoid dental visits when faced with difficulty paying dental bills. However, it is important to note that these associations do not necessarily imply a causal relationship.

Prevalence of dental anxiety among adults in China: a Meta-analysis.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:This study aimed to systematically evaluate the prevalence of dental anxiety in Chinese adults and to provide references for decision making on oral healthcare. METHODS:We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Ebsco, Embase, The Cochrane Library, WanFang Data, CNKI, and VIP database to collect cross-sectional studies on dental anxiety in Chinese adults from the establishment of the databases to 30 September 2022. After literature screening, data extraction, and evaluation of the risk of bias in the included studies by two researchers independently, R 4.0.4 software was used to perform a Meta-analysis. RESULTS:A total of 39 studies were included, including 24 309 subjects. Meta-analysis showed that the prevalence of dental anxiety in Chinese adults was 35.39% [95%CI (31.31%, 40.01%)]. Subgroup analysis showed that the prevalence rates of male and female adults were 32.92% and 44.78%, respectively. The prevalence rates of adults aged 16-39,40-59, ≥60 were 49.37%, 47.13%, and 37.41%, respectively. The prevalence rates of mild, moderate, and severe patients were 13.81%, 15.15%, and 9.24%, respectively. The prevalence rates of adults with elementary school and below, middle school, and university and above education levels were 33.81%, 35.84%, and 36.24%, respectively. The prevalence rates were 39.45% and 45.90% in adults with and without dental-treatment history, respectively. The prevalence rates of adults surveyed in dental and non-dental clinics were 27.10% and 39.31%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS:The prevalence of dental anxiety in Chinese adults was relatively high, primarily moderate anxiety, and it was more likely to occur in women, young people, and groups with no history of dental treatment. Early intervention should be performed for adults with dental anxiety to improve their awareness of oral healthcare and treatment compliance and thus to promote the oral-health level of adults in China.
Sea-Level Rise and Adaptation Responses for Coastal Construction: A Spatial-Temporal Decision Making Tool

Abstract:Most infrastructure, settlements and facilities are located near the coast and are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR), coastal erosion and storms. Continued population growth in low-lying coastal areas will increase vulnerability to these hazards. The impacts of SLR are highly variable across regions and difficult to predict over time and space. Principally, due to constraints on the adaptive capacities of coastal areas, SLR increases the challenge of achieving sustainable development in these areas in developing countries, and they are likely to be hit hardest. Generally speaking, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change are urgent issues, especially among developing countries. The dilemmas confronting decision makers are: how and when to adapt to SLR. The complexity can easily overwhelm the ability of decision makers to thoroughly investigate the outcomes of adaptation alternatives. Therefore developing and implementing effective adaptation options is crucial for future coastal development. However, in many cases, it is difficult to determine whether taking a specific action to prepare for SLR is justified, due to uncertainty in the timing and magnitude of impacts. By considering the uncertain nature of projected changes in climate and addressing these dilemmas, this paper intends to provide a dynamic model for a comprehensive vulnerability assessment of coastal areas to assist decision makers to identify and evaluate effective adaptation alternatives for reducing climate change impacts. To achieve this outcome, two modeling techniques are combined: (1) System Dynamics, and (2) Geographical Information Systems. A combination of these approaches would provide the potential to address temporal and spatial problems concurrently.

Abstract:A survey of the literature purporting to deal with the effects of water deprivation shows that most of it has really been concerned with the results of a deficiency of salt. In 1935, however, Kerpel-Fronius distinguished between the changes in the body due solely to a deficiency of salt, and those due simply to a shortage of water, but this important distinction has been little appreciated either in this country or in America, although Nadal, Pedersen & Maddock [1941] set out to contrast the features of these two syndromes in man. Unfortunately, in one of Nadal et al. two subjects the period of water deprivation followed directly upon one of salt deficiency, while in the other deprivation of water was accompanied by fasting. Hence, although results of great interest were obtained, the effects of water deprivation were complicated in one person by salt deficiency, and in the other by fasting. Admittedly, in clinical medicine, deprivation of water is usually accompanied by one or other of these complications, but warfare by sea or land may subject men with plenty of food to a shortage of water. The present paper describes the results of metabolism studies on two subjects, who abstained from water for 3 and 4 days respectively, during which they took a 'dry' diet adequate in protein, salt and calories. Although a balance experiment on a human being cannot be carried to the point where the biochemical cause of death becomes clearly stigmatized, it is possible to distinguish physico-chemical happenings in the early days of water deprivation which would, if they went on long enough, provide a reasonable modus moriendi. It is this chain of events which it is now proposed to describe.

Abstract:Background: Dental anxiety is marked by intense and irrational fear of dental procedures affecting millions of individuals worldwide. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dental anxiety, its influencing factors, and the preferred management techniques among adults seeking dental care in Riyadh. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was carried out among 1734 patients who visited dental clinics in Riyadh. A self-administered questionnaire was developed and validated, comprising 28 closed-ended questions; it demonstrated good reliability and internal consistency (Cohen's kappa coefficient = 0.90, Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.86), it contained pre-validated Modified Dental Anxiety Scale to quantitatively assess the level of dental anxiety. Data analysis involved descriptive analysis, Chi-square test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression. Results: Majority (59.2%) of participants reported moderate anxiety, while 10.9% experienced high anxiety which was significantly linked to factors such as fear of pain (37.8%) and anaesthetic needles (25.8%). Topical anaesthetic gel (64.5%), pre-treatment explanations (78.9%), and conducive clinic environment (79.4%) were perceived as effective anxiety alleviators. A negative correlation existed between dental anxiety and preferred management techniques. Dental anxiety had significant association between gender (β = 0.910) and age (β = 0.263). Conclusion: This study revealed that majority of participants had moderate dental anxiety, linked significantly to influencing factors like frequency and purpose of dental visits and past dental experiences. The study also found the preferred anxiety management methods among participants which included topical anaesthetic gel, pre-treatment explanations, and a comfortable clinic environment.
The oral health of dentally anxious five- and eight-year-olds: a secondary analysis of the 2013 Child Dental Health Survey

Abstract:Introduction Little research has been conducted into the relationships between dental anxiety and factors relating to oral health in small children. This research takes advantage of data from the Child Dental Health Survey 2013 to perform a secondary analysis for the five- and eight-year-old age groups. Aim To compare the oral health of groups of children aged five and eight years old, classified into three levels of anxiety.Design Secondary analysis of data from 2,289 children aged five and eight years in the Child Dental Health Survey 2013.Materials and methods Participants were divided into three groups, depending on the parent's report of their child's dental anxiety. Descriptive analyses compared the three groups on social demographic factors, clinical status, self-reported oral health status, oral health-related behaviours and oral health impact. Results Dentally anxious children were more likely to have active decay and decay experience. Parents of children with dental anxiety were more likely to report that the child's oral health had a negative effect on family life. Highly anxious children were less likely to attend the dentist or engage in oral health-related behaviours. Conclusions Dentally anxious children have more dental disease and their parents express that the child's oral health has a greater impact on their family's quality of life.

The oral health of dentally phobic 12- and 15-year-olds: a descriptive analysis of the 2013 Child Dental Health Survey

Abstract:Introduction Dental anxiety has been shown to be related to poorer oral health. Limited data exist exploring the relationship between oral health status and dental anxiety in non-clinical populations in children.Aim To compare the oral health of phobic and non-phobic children aged 12 and 15 years.Design Secondary analysis of data from 12-year-old and 15-year-old children in the Child Dental Health Survey 2013.Materials and methods Participants were grouped into non-phobic and phobic groups, depending on their self-reported dental anxiety (MDAS). Descriptive analyses compared the two groups on social demographic factors, clinical status, self-reported oral health status, oral health-related behaviours and oral health impact.Results A total of 601 children were classed as dentally phobic with 4,144 classed as non-phobic. Dental phobic children were more likely to be female, had more active decay and untreated dental disease, and rated their dental health as poorer. Phobic children were more likely to report that their oral health had a negative effect on their everyday life. This group were less likely to brush their teeth regularly or attend the dentist for check-ups.Conclusions Dentally phobic children have more dental disease and express greater impact on their everyday life.

Abstract:Aim . The aim of the study was to analyze anxiety in female and male dental students related to their first procedure performed on a pediatric patient as part of their study curriculum. Materials and Methods . The study was carried out in eighty-four 3rd year dental students (75.00% females and 25.00% males), aged 22–28 years. The participation in the research was anonymous and voluntary. The study was performed during clinical classes in pediatric dentistry where the students were supposed to perform simple prophylactic or therapeutic procedures on pediatric patients. To assess anxiety, a State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used prepared by Spielberger et al. based on the American STAI questionnaire of 1970 that is composed of two-parts scales: the X-1 scale to assess anxiety as a state and the X-2 scale to assess anxiety as a trait. For statistical analysis, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Pearson’s chi-squared test, and Mann–Whitney test as well as Statistica 10 programme were used. Results . The results obtained from the first and second part of the questionnaire concerning anxiety as a state and as a trait showed high level of anxiety as a state in 51.19% of the students and as a trait in 32.14% and low level in 19.05% and 41.67%, respectively. The obtained results showed minimal and maximal values to be 24 and 71, respectively, for the STAI-1 scale (mean = 40.55), and 24 and 57, respectively, for the STAI-2 scale (mean = 41.75). Conclusions . The results show that the anxiety level during clinical classes is relatively high in the studied population of students. Preparing the students to cope with stress resulting from treating the patients seems to be of importance. Such programmes should be implemented before the start of practical clinical classes. The acquired knowledge will be useful in further professional career.

Dental anxiety and dental care - a comparison between Albania and Germany

Abstract:Background: The present study is the first in Albania on dental fear and dental anxiety and also in the field of psychosocial medicine. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there are differences in dental anxiety using the Dental Anxiety Scale, their level of psychological distress using the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 and the evaluation of oral health among Albanian and German patients. Methods: This study was conducted in the period from December 2019 to July 2020, a sample of N = 263 patients (133 Germans, 130 Albanians) using the Dental Anxiety Scale questionnaires to determine anxiety before dental treatment and the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 to evaluate psychological distress. Moreover, the patients answered questions regarding their oral health and dental care. In Germany, there were four refusals to entrance in the study due to various reasons, in contrast to Albania, where there were no refusals at all For the purposes of this study, data on both populations aged 14 years and older were used. Results: The questionnaires results were calculated for all participants. The current subjective health status of Albanian patients was assessed to be significantly worse than that of German patients (p < 0,000). Germans were more susceptible to signs of Anxiety (p < 0,000), Depression and Somatization and scored higher on the Dental Anxiety Scale and the Global Severity Index (p < 0,000) than Albanian patients. Additionally Albanian patients scored significantly lower on the preventive care index (p < 0,000). Despite an elevated DAS anxiety level, German patients reported going to the dentist more frequently than Albanian patients. Conclusion: The results showed that between both populations differences in dental anxiety, psychological distress and oral health exists. Patients from Germany report more psychological distress and described more dental anxiety compared to Albanian patients. Albanian patients reported not utilization on oral health care.The implementation of educational programs and preventive measures, would contribute to raising awareness about the importance of oral health and increased use of dental services.
