Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical related factors of dental anxiety in adult outpatients. Methods A total of 376 adult patients who were treated in Odontopathy Prevention Institute and the dental clinic of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University from June to October 2017 were enrolled. The dental anxiety scale (DAS) was used to assess the occurrence of dental anxiety. SPSS 18.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results There were 50 adult outpatients with anxiety or severe anxiety and 326 cases without anxiety. There was no statistically significant difference in degree of education between the two groups (4/26, 6//27, 10/74, 30/199, χ2=0.83, P>0.05). However, significant differences were found in the age (27/98, 12/96, 11/44), gender (42/181, 8/145), dental treatment history (7/11, 43/315) and childhood dental psychological fear (12/128, 38/198) between two groups(χ2=18.37, 14.57, 10.74, 4.32, all P<0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression was used to analyze the association of factors affecting dental anxiety. The results showed that it was significantly correlated with age (OR=50.66, 3.37), gender (OR=65.25), history of dental treatment (OR=14.22) and childhood dental psychological fear (OR=3.64) (all P<0.05). Conclusions Adult dental anxiety is common in clinical practices. There is a close relationship between the occurrence of anxiety and the patient′s gender, age, history of dental treatment and childhood dental psychological fear.
