Abstract:Porous IrO2/Ti/IrO2 catalyst electrodes were obtained by coating IrO2 on both sides of three types of porous Ti powder sheets (sample 1, sample 2, and sample 3) using different surface treatment methods, and a hydrogen evolution catalyst electrode was obtained by coating Pt/C on carbon gas diffusion layers. A Nafion115 membrane was used as an electrolyte for the membrane electrode assemblies (MEA). Water electrolysis was investigated at cell temperatures up to 150 °C, and the electrical characteristics of the three types of porous IrO2/Ti/IrO2 catalyst electrodes were investigated. The sheet resistance of sample 1 was higher than those of samples 2 and 3, although during water electrolysis, a high current density was observed due to the nanostructure of the IrO2 catalyst. In addition, the structural stabilities of Nafion and Aquivion membranes up to 150 °C were investigated by using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The polymer structures of Nafion and Aquivion membranes were stable up to 80 °C, whereas the crystalline domains grew significantly above 120 °C. In other words, the initial polymer structure did not recover after the sample was heated above the glass transition temperature.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) offers the ambition of combining the advantages of alkaline electrolysers, i.e. the use of cheap and plentiful catalytic materials, with those of proton exchange membrane electrolysis of water, i.e. high performance and fast response to changing operating conditions. However, the development of performing and durable anion exchange membranes is still the major challenge for the ultimate industrial adoption of AEMWE. Here, we introduce an innovative nanocomposite AEM based on trimethylammonium functionalized silica nanoscale ionic materials (NIM- N + ) incorporated in quaternized polysulfone (qPSU). The presence of NIM- N + in the hydrophilic clusters of qPSU produces a remarkable enhancement in the dimensional and thermo-mechanical stability of the composite AEM. Furthermore, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) investigations highlighted that the nanoparticles are directly involved in the transport process of hydroxide ions. This enabled qPSU/NIM- N + composite membrane to achieve impressive anionic conductivity values, e.g. about 110 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 95% relative humidity (RH). The AEMWE single cell, equipped with this membrane, operated properly both with 1 or 0.5 M KOH solution, displaying a current density larger than 3.5 A cm −2 at 2.2 V and 80 °C.

Development of High-Performance Polymer Electrolyte Membranes through the Application of Quantum Dot Coatings to Nafion Membranes

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) generates oxygen and hydrogen at the anode and cathode, respectively, by conducting protons generated at the anode to the cathode through a proton exchange membrane (PEM). The performance of PEMWE can be improved with faster catalytic reactions at each electrode; thus, the development of a PEM with excellent ionic conductivity and physicochemical stability is essential. Nafion, a type of perfluoro-sulfonic acid polymer, is the most widely used PEM material. However, despite its excellent conductivity and chemical stability, it exhibits high hydrogen permeability due to its structural characteristics. Quantum dots (QDs) have a hydrophilic functional group that can act as an ion conductor and are extremely compatible with the hydrophilic cluster of Nafion due to their characteristic nanosized structure. In this study, various compositions of N-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) containing hydrophilic functional groups were coated on a Nafion-212 membrane. The resulting series of CQD-coated Nafion membranes exhibited improvements in morphology and ionic conductivity as well as reductions in hydrogen permeability. In particular, the Nafion membrane coated with 0.75 wt % of N-doped CQD (CQD-cNafion-0.75) exhibited improved mechanical properties and higher oxidation stability compared to Nafion-212. It also displayed higher ionic conductivity of 240.3 mS cm-1 at 80 °C and reduced hydrogen permeability (about 10% reduction) compared to Nafion-212. In addition, the performance of single-cell PEMWE using the CQD-cNafion-0.75 membrane was found to be approximately 1.2 times higher than Nafion-212.

Abstract:Hydrocarbon ionomers bear the potential to significantly lower the material cost and increase the efficiency of proton‐exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). However, no fully hydrocarbon membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with a performance comparable to Nafion‐MEAs has been reported. PEMWE‐MEAs are presented comprising sPPS as membrane and electrode binder reaching 3.5 A cm−2 at 1.8 V and thus clearly outperforming state‐of‐the‐art Nafion‐MEAs (N115 as membrane, 1.5 A cm−2 at 1.8 V) due to a significantly lower high frequency resistance (57 ± 4 mΩ cm² vs 161 ± 7 mΩ cm²). Additionally, pure sPPS‐membranes show a three times lower gas crossover (<0.3 mA cm−2) than Nafion N115‐membranes (>1.1 mA cm−2) in a fully humidified surrogate test. Furthermore, more than 80 h of continuous operation is shown for sPPS‐MEAs in a preliminary durability test (constant current hold at 1 A cm−2 at 80 °C). These results rely on the unique transport properties of sulfonated poly(phenylene sulfone) (sPPS) that combines high proton conductivity with low gas crossover.

Abstract:The poly(fluorene)‐based PFPBPF‐QA anion exchange membranes are described with interstitial alkyl chains in the conducting groups and polymer backbone. The rationally developed PFPBPF‐4‐QA shows satisfactory hydroxide conductivity, mechanical properties, alkaline stability, and improved interfacial contact properties with the ionomer in the CL. The 1‐cell water electrolyzer stack utilizing PFPBPF‐4‐QA with an active area of 63.6 cm2 has an energy conversion efficiency of 80.2% and a voltage decay rate of 1.5 mV kh−1 for 2000 h. Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has gained attention as an attractive alternative to alkaline and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) due to its high efficiency and low hydrogen unit cost. However, the long‐term durability of AEMWE is ≈10 times lower than that of PEMWE, which typically operates for 40 000 h. Here, a new design strategy is presented for aryl ether‐free PFPBPF‐QA anion exchange membranes with interstitial alkyl chains in the conducting groups and polymer backbone. The rationally designed PFPBPF‐4‐QA, with a suitable ion exchange capacity, shows high ionic conductivity, mechanical properties, alkaline stability, and stronger membrane‐ionomer contact properties at the catalyst layers. A single AEMWE cell using PFPBPF‐4‐QA demonstrated a voltage decay rate of 2 mV kh−1 at 1.0 A cm−2, which is significantly lower than that reported for AEMWEs and Nafion‐based PEMWEs. Additionally, a large‐sized 1‐cell AEMWE stack utilizing PFPBPF‐4‐QA with an active area of 63.6 cm2 achieved an energy conversion efficiency of 80.2% and a voltage decay rate of 1.5 mV kh−1 for 2 000 h, with over 90% of the initial efficiency maintained for over 49 095 h based on an exponential fitting calculation.

Abstract:Herein, fully hydrocarbon-based ionomer catalyst coated membranes based on sulfo-phenylated polyphenylene biphenyl (sPPB-H + ) are evaluated in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer cell at 70°C. In conjunction with catalyst layers incorporating Nafion ® D520 ionomer, sPPB-H + membranes require a lower applied potential than reference Nafion ® NR112 recast membranes of equal thickness, e.g., 1.66 V vs. 1.75 V at 1 A cm -2 . Initially, sPPB-H + membranes yield substantially lower gas crossover compared to the CCMs containing NR112 membrane, however, increasing gas crossover and a higher rates of voltage evolution is measured during a stability test at 1 A cm -2 . A reinforced and commercialized membrane of similar chemistry (Pemion ® ) is also evaluated, demonstrating smaller changes to the initial gas crossover owing to higher mechanical stability. Employment of sPPB-H + as the catalyst layer binder is also investigated, where the highest efficiency for all-sPPB-H + CCMs is achieved when the anode and cathode ionomer content are 20 wt%, which from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is predominately attributed to changes in the proton conductivity within the catalyst layer. Despite this advancement, high ionomer swelling and catalyst delamination led to shorter electrolyzer lifetimes for the all hydrocarbon and non fluorinated membrane electrode assembly, informing future ionomer development.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is operated in an alkaline environment and has a similar membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) structure to that of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). The use of non-noble metals as the electrocatalysts and operation at high current densities are inherently possible, so they are expected to be low-cost, high-performance candidates for next-generation water electrolysis systems. Improving the anion conductivity of the AEM and the activity of the non-precious metal catalysts is essential for the practical application of AEMWEs. 1 The non-noble electrocatalysts used in the MEA in this study were Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 and Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O, 3 which have a fused-aggregate network structure, and the electrolyte was a hydrocarbon-based AEM (QPAF-4) 4 , all of which were developed at the University of Yamanashi. The catalyst ink for the anodes was prepared by mixing the Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 O catalyst (University of Yamanashi) with solvent (water/methanol) and QPAF-4 (IEC = 2.0 meq g -1 , University of Yamanashi) binder solution. The anode ink was coated by using pulse-swirl-spray (PSS, Nordson) on the QPAF-4 membranes (IEC = 1.5 meq g -1 ) to make the catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) with the anode. Catalyst inks for the cathodes was prepared by mixing Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O catalyst (University of Yamanashi) or Pt/CB catalyst (TEC10E50E, Tanaka Kikinzoku) with solvent (water/methanol) and QPAF-4 (IEC = 2.0 meq g -1 ) binder solution. The cathode ink was coated by using PSS on the gas diffusion layer (GDL, TGP-H-120, Toray) to make the gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for the cathodes. Ni mesh (Bekaert.co.jp) was used for the anode GDLs. The single cell (Figure 1, cell structure developed by Yokohama National University) performances were measured while supplying 1 M KOH at 80 °C to both electrodes. Figure 2 (a) shows the I-V performance of cells using Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 O for the anode and Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O or Pt/CB for the cathode. The electrolysis voltage observed for the cell with non-noble metal catalysts on both electrodes was higher than that for the cell with Pt/C on the cathode but was below 2 V at a current density of 1.2 A cm -2 . The value of the onset electrolysis voltage was nearly the same as that of the corresponding rotating disk electrode, 3 suggesting that the intrinsic performance of the cathode catalyst is being realized in the MEA. Increasing the amount of the cathodic catalyst loading scarcely affected the polarization. It is supposed that the fused-aggregate network structure of the Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 O catalyst contributes to the favorable mass transfer. Figure 2 (b) shows the time dependence of the cell voltage of these cells. The increased loading amount improved the durability of the cathode. It is considered that the increase in the thickness of the cathode catalyst layer alleviated the damage of the GDL fibers to the membrane. These results indicate the possibility of adopting non-precious metal catalysts for both electrodes in AEMWE and thereby significantly reducing the catalyst cost. Abstract:Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) offers a green hydrogen production method that eliminates the need for platinum group metals (PGM) as electrocatalysts. This study employs a COMSOL® 6.0 model to simulate a 1x1 cm 2 Ni fibre − Raney® Ni || X37-50RT || NiFe 2 O 4 − SS316L fibre AEMWE membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The membrane is set at a thickness of 60μm , while the anodic and cathodic porous transport layers (PTL) are modelled with a thickness of 370μm , each having an average porosity of 0.70. The half − cell overpotentials are experimentally measured to validate the half − cell model in a three − electrode setup consisting of (working electrode) || AGAR-Ag/AgCl || Pt − wire (counter electrode). Two freshly prepared MEAs validated the (i) base case and (ii) sensitivity analysis models. The base case model validated the MEA results at 20 °C and 1 atm in 1M KOH electrolyte feed at 1.56 ml min −1 cm −2 . The five parameters studied with the sensitivity analysis revealed the most influential parameters based on area-specific resistance (ASR) change in the following order (+ and − indicate increase and decrease in ASR, respectively): KOH concentration ( − 97%), membrane thickness (+ 9%), temperature ( − 4%), cathode feed type ( <+ 0.5%), and KOH flow rate ( >− 0.5%).

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogen is projected as a key energy vector to achieve aspiring global decarbonization goals mainly for those sectors where greenhouse gas emissions are highly challenging to reduce. Therefore, green hydrogen production using water PEM electrolysis has become the aim of numerous recent studies. One of the crucial challenges for improving hydrogen production is reaching a deep knowledge of the role of anodes electrocatalysts. In this investigation we studied and modeled the effect of different anode electrocatalysts and solid electrolyte’s configurations in a single-cell PEM electrolyzer performance, using EIS. We assembled and tested PEM electrolysis MEAs with two different configurations. MEA-1 comprises in catalyst-coated membrane (MEA)-type with a geometric area of 25 cm 2 containing NafionTM 115, 3.0 mg cm −2 IrRuOx as the anode, and 3.0 mg cm −2 PtB for the cathode. MEA-2 involves catalyst-coated membrane (MEA)-type with a geometric area of 25 cm 2 containing NafionTM 117, and 3.0 mg cm −2 PtB both for the anode and cathode. Sintered Ti plates were used as gas diffusion layers. After hydration and activation steps at room temperature, the polarization curve was performed. Hysteresis curves were achieved to provide information on thermal equilibrium during the measurements. The oxygen and hydrogen production rate were measured and compared to theoretical values. Experiments were carried out at 20 and 40 °C. EIS measurements were performed at different points of the polarization curve, sweeping a frequency range between 10 kHz and 10 mHz, with an amplitude of 5 mV and taking 10 points per decade. To avoid electrocatalysts area effects in charge transfer reaction, time constants were calculated. It can be clearly observed the trend of resistances and overpotentials according to different process control. Low onset potential for oxygen evolution reaction depicts for MEA-1 means that there will be less power consumption to achieve the same efficiency or same amount of gas generation rate compared to high onset potential case depicted for MEA-2. Although different membrane thicknesses would result in different electrochemical performances due to the change in the ionic resistance, for the thickness studied we did not observe a change in the ionic resistance. The experimental results show an increase in efficiency with temperature, reflected in higher currents for a given potential and lower time constants resulting in the EIS runs.

Abstract:Seawater electrolysis faces unique and fundamental chemical challenges, such as the suppression of highly detrimental halogen chemistries [1], that poison the current state-of-the-art anode catalyst and accelerate the degradation of the membrane [2]. The technically favored solution path is to address these issues by developing a new selective catalyst and possibly by limiting operating conditions [3]. Therefore, developing a facile and cost-effective way to design highly active, selective, and and stable seawater-splitting catalysts is of great importance for research and industry [4]. In this work, hexagonal NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets were synthesized by one-step solvothermal reactions. As synthesized NiFe-LDH catalyst exhibits high activity, selectivity, and stability towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolyte, delivering current densities of 10 mA/cm 2 at low overpotentials of 359 mV, with no significant degradation observed during RDE testing at constant voltage of 1.57 V for 72 hours in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, in order to fabricate catalyst coated electrode (CCE), the nanostructured NiFe-LDH catalyst was homogeneously sprayed onto a platinized titanium porous transport layer (PTL) using an ultrasonic spray coating system. As prepared CCE is used as an anode and commercially available Raney nickel catalyst deposited on a nickel fiber frit is used as a cathode to assemble a MEA with Sustainion ® X37-50 grade T anion exchange membrane (AEM) that was tested in alkaline seawater. Abstract:Herein, we investigate the effects of catholyte feed method and anode binder content on the characteristics of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) to construct a high-performance electrolyzer, revealing that the initial AEMWE performance is significantly improved by pre-feeding 0.5 M aqueous KOH to the cathode. The highest long-term activity during repeated voltage cycling is observed for AEMWE operation in the dry cathode mode, for which the best long-term performance among membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) featuring polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder–impregnated (5–20 wt%) anodes is detected for a PTFE content of 20 wt%. MEAs with low PTFE content (5 and 9 wt%) demonstrate high initial performance, rapid performance decay, and significant catalyst loss from the electrode during long-term operation, whereas the MEA with 20 wt% PTFE allows stable water electrolysis for over 1600 voltage cycles. Optimization of cell operating conditions (i.e., operation in dry cathode mode at an optimum anode binder content following an initial solution feed) achieves an enhanced water splitting current density (1.07 A cm−2 at 1.8 V) and stable long-term AEMWE performance (0.01% current density reduction per voltage cycle).

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) suffer from low efficiencies and durability, due to the unavailability of appropriate anion exchange membranes (AEM). Herein, a rigid ladder-like polyxanthene crosslinker was developed for the preparation of ultramicroporous crosslinked polyxanthene-poly(biphenyl piperidinium)-based AEMs. Due to the synergetic effects of ultramicroporous structure and microphase-separation morphology, the crosslinked membranes showed high OH− conductivity (up to 163 mS cm-1 at 80 oC). Furthermore, these AEMs also exhibited moderate water uptake, excellent dimensional stability, and remarkable alkaline stability. The single-cell AEMWE based on QPBP-PX-15% and equipped with non-noble catalysts achieved a current density of 3000 mA cm-2 at 2.03 V (compared to PiperION's 2.26 V) in 6 M KOH solution at 80 oC, which outperformed many AEMWEs that used platinum-group-metal catalysts. Abstract:Abstract Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is a very promising and sustainable hydrogen production technology. Currently, there is a growing interest in achieving ordered structures within membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for PEMWE. However, both ordered electron conductor and ordered proton conductor structures are single component structure, which still have many shortcomings. In this work, a hybrid ordered membrane electrodes assembly based on cone‐shaped is constructed Nafion array with rough surface by introducing TiO 2 nanoparticles to Nafion emulsion. As a result, this hybrid ordered MEA achieves a high surface roughness of 3.39 nm that is 2.64 times higher than that of ordered MEA without TiO 2 nanoparticles doped and current density up to 2.48 A cm −2 at 2 V with 14.4 μg cm −2 (Ir) catalyst loading. This work provides a new hybrid ordered structure for MEA and exhibits the great potential of enhancing the interfacial contact between the catalyst layer and Nafion membrane to improve PEMWE performance.

Abstract:A new class of cationic group‐free PBI ion solvating membranes in a free‐standing gel form (ISM‐PBI‐FG) is reported for highly efficient and durable alkaline water electrolysis. The degradation of fixed cationic groups in most anion exchange membranes (AEMs) under alkaline environments limits their durability for alkaline water electrolysis (AWE). Ion‐solvating membranes (ISMs) have emerged as a promising alternative to address this issue. Herein, a cationic group‐free ion solvating membrane in a free‐standing gel form (ISM‐PBI‐FG) is presented, created through a sol‐to‐gel transformation process followed by KOH imbibing. This approach yields a 3D porous microstructure composed of entangled polybenzimidazole (PBI) nanofibrils, achieving 89% porosity, which enables ultrahigh alkali uptake (346% in 6 M KOH) and exceptional ionic conductivity (763 mS cm−1 at 80 °C). The absence of cationic groups avoids the attack by OH−, thus ensures good alkaline stability with a conductivity retention rate of 91.6% over a 3120 h ex situ test in 6 M KOH. The resulting membrane delivered outstanding AWE performance with current densities of 5.5 A cm−2 using platinum‐group‐metal (PGM) catalysts and 2.2 A cm−2 using PGM‐free catalysts at 2.0 V. Notably, the in situ electrolyzer device based on ISM‐PBI‐FG offers extensive operational flexibility ranging from 40–100 °C and demonstrates record durability in concentrated alkaline conditions, with a voltage decay rate of only 23.5μV h−1, outperforming most reported AEMs and ISMs.

Abstract:Hydrogen produced by water splitting is a promising solution for a sustainable economy from renewable energy sources. With this respect, proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis is one of the most suitable technologies, even though low cost, highly active catalysts and durable electrolyte membranes are still needed. Here we demonstrate the successful use of a nano-composite, sulfated titania (S-TiO2)-added Nafion electrolyte coupled with home-made IrRuOx-based anode and commercial Pt cathode in lab-scale water electrolyzers. Superior electrolysis performances were found at 100 °C when comparing the hybrid electrolyte with undoped Nafion. Indeed, current densities of 4 A cm−2 and 3 A cm−2 were found at a terminal voltage of 2 V for the composite and plain membrane, respectively. Ex-situ conductivity measurements, as well as in-operando impedance spectra, were carried out, demonstrating the beneficial effect of the inorganic filler on membrane properties under practical operating conditions. NMR studies (PFG and relaxation time) corroborate the positive role of the nano-additive on the water retention capacity of the membrane, while the dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the hybrid membrane is stiffer and can resist to temperatures higher than undoped Nafion.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new proton exchange membrane (PEM) based on photochemically synthesized nano porous aryl epoxy resin (npAER) sulfonated by sulfanilic acid. The npAER PEM fabrication process involves solvent-induced nanoporous structure formation combined with photopolymerization for microstructure fabrication. The PEM was placed in the cathode of a half-fuel cell for testing in 0.5M H2SO4 at different temperatures with a constant oxygen flow. When compared to commercial PEM based on Nafion®, this npAER PEM exhibits increased current density from -0.456 (mA/cm2) to -1.14 (mA/cm2) as temperature increased from 60°C to 90°C, while Nafion® demonstrates current density drop by two orders of magnitude. The new npAER PEM shows decent thermal stability, mechanical strength and proton transport ability at a higher temperature (90°C).

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are key core materials in water electrolysis, requiring excellent conductivity and chemical durability. In this study, the suspended dense alkyl ether linkages and 1,2,4,5-tetramethylimidazolium ions with high stability are introduced into the polymer structure (PAES-FTMI-x, x = 0.15-0.30) for AEMs. The obtained AEMs with ion exchange capacity of 1.22-1.74 mmol g −1 exhibit high conductivity and dimensional stability. Their hydroxide ionic conductivity and swelling ratio are in the range of 76.28-113.17 mS cm −1 and 9.7%-17.0% at 80 °C, respectively. The conductivity retention for the representative sample PAES-FTMI-0.25 achieves 90.6% after soaked in 2 mol L −1 NaOH and 80 °C for 480 h. The assemble water electrolyzer based on PAES-FTMI-0.25 shows 734.97 mA cm −2 of current density at 2 mol L −1 NaOH and 2.0 V of voltage when the temperature is RT. It also has good durable stability at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 for 480 h with only 0.02 V decrease of voltage. This work would provide an effective strategy for the collaborative design and modification of AEMs for alkaline electrolyzed water.

Abstract:This present work focused on the aromatic polymer (poly (1,4-phenylene ether-ether-sulfone); SPEES) interconnected/ cross-linked with the aliphatic monomer (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic; AMPS) with the sulfonic group to enhance the conductivity and make it flexible with aliphatic chain of AMPS. Surprisingly, it produced higher conductivity than that of other reported work after the chemical stability was measured. It allows optimizing the synthesis of polymer electrolyte membranes with tailor-made combinations of conductivity and stability. Membrane structure is characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR. Weight loss of the membrane in Fenton's reagent is not too high during the oxidative stability test. The thermal stability of the membrane is characterized by TGA and its morphology by SEM and SAXS. The prepared membranes improved proton conductivity up to 0.125 Scm-1 which is much higher than that of Nafion N115 which is 0.059 Scm-1. Therefore, the SPEES-AM membranes are adequate for fuel cell at 50 °C with reduced relative humidity (RH).

Abstract:Porous membranes play a crucial role in alkaline water electrolyzer, and addressing the urgent need for the development of membranes with enhanced ion-transferring properties and superior gas-retarding properties is of utmost importance. This work presents a simple and efficient method for preparing the superhydrophilic polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) membrane, which includes surface oxidation to generate photosensitive sulfone groups, then UV irradiation radical reaction to introduce amine groups as the reaction site, and finally covalently grafting chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) monomers containing hydrophilic groups onto the PPS surface via interfacial polymerization to form a superhydrophilic coating on the surface of fibers. The application of ATR-FTIR, XPS, and SEM has been employed to illustrate that the monomers utilized in the preparation procedure are chemically bonded to the membrane surface, resulting in the formation of a hydrophilic surface layer. The modified PPS membrane can fast adsorb water droplets, promote ion transfer and gas bubbles detachment in an alkaline solution. When used as a membrane in an alkaline water electrolyzer with a 30% KOH electrolyte solution, the cell voltage of 1.90 V at 80 o C and 5000 A m −2 , and the hydrogen and oxygen produced with a purity of 99.88% and 99.49%, respectively, which was better than the commercial PPS membrane, and the performance was remained essentially unchanged after 120 h of operation. As a result, the superhydrophilic PPS membrane generated by this process has a wide range of applications in alkaline water electrolysis.

Abstract:Three patients (of two unrelated Polish families) with early-adult onset dementia were subjects of the study. Two cases, previously diagnosed as familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), were confirmed by genetic and neuropathological studies, and one case of CADASIL was ultrastructurally confirmed by the presence of vascular granular osmiophilic material. Now the brain autopsy material has been reinvestigated using immunohistochemical (IHC) markers for vascular smooth muscle cells, paying special attention to collagen markers for extracellular matrix components and ultrastructural microvascular changes. In both diseases, IHC examination showed a reduction or loss of expression of smooth muscle actin (SMA) in tunica media of the cerebral arterioles. Fibrous thickening of the wall of the small meningeal arteries, intracerebral arterioles and numerous capillaries, with amyloid or granular deposits, drew our attention. In these vessels, marked expression of fibrillar collagen type III as well as strong immunoreactivity of the basement membrane (BM) component collagen type IV were found. The most damage was observed in the FAD/CAA double-barrel vessel wall and in some CADASIL arterioles changed by fibrinoid necrosis. The fibrous changes of the small vessels were more distinct in CADASIL t han in FAD/CAA. In FAD,electronmicroscopic examination revealed both amyloid and collagen fibres within the thickened BM of capillaries and the small arterioles. Clusters of collagen fibres between lamellae of BM, frequently in a pericyte position,were observed,and some were seen in the degenerated pericytes as well. Typical changes of the pericytes were accumulation of lipofuscin-like material and their degeneration. The mitochondria of the pericytes and of the endothelium were rare and swollen, with damaged and reduced cristae. The VSMCs of the arteriolar walls exhibited degenerative changes with atrophy of the cellular organelles. The fibrous,collagen-richCADASILsmallcerebralvessels,despite the weakness of the vessel wall due to reduction of VSMCs, appeared to be stronger than in FAD/CAA. These findings may suggest an accelerated process of transformation of the small cerebral vessels in which early onset of VSMCs loss is a predominant feature of the vascular changes in both presented diseases.
