Abstract:The application of Friedel-Crafts (FC) alkylation reaction to the in situ compatibilization between polystyrene-grafted nano-sized TiO2 (PS-grafted TiO2) and polypropylene (PP) was assessed. The PS-grafted TiO2 was first prepared via dispersion polymerization of styrene (St) using 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate treated nano-sized TiO2 (MPS-treated TiO2) as cores, and then dispersed within PP by melt blending with different contents of FC catalyst, AlCl3/St, to give PP/PS-grafted TiO2 nanocomposites. The dispersion of PS-grafted TiO2 in PP and interfacial adhesion of PP/PS-grafted TiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The results indicated that the dispersion of PS-grafted TiO2 in PP could be improved, with an enhancement of interfacial adhesion between TiO2 and PP, by introducing FC catalyst with adequate concentration, which led to a better thermal stability and resistance to ultraviolet (UV) aging of PP/PS-grafted TiO2 nanocomposites. TiO2 Nanoparticles Supported on PMMA Nanofibers for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange

Abstract:In this paper, a photocatalyst composed of TiO2 nanoparticles supported on the nanofibers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was successfully prepared by hydrothermally treating the electrospun PMMA nanofibers containing titanium n-butoxide precursor at 135°C for 8h. As-prepared composite was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction pattern, thermal gravimetric analysis and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements. It is revealed that high content (42%) of tetragonal anatase TiO2 nanoparticles are uniformly loaded on the PMMA nanofibers to constitute the composite (TiO2@PMMA) photocatalyst with BET surface area of 21.4m2g−1. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2@PMMA towards the degradation of methyl orange (MO), a model pollutant, has been investigated. It is observed that 0.1g of the composite could degrade 100mL of MO (10mg/L) completely within 50min under UV illumination, exhibiting a high catalytic activity. Moreover, the composite could be easily separated from the reaction system by filtration, and maintain high photocatalytic activity in five consecutive cycles of the degradation of MO, suggesting its potentials in recycling use. The work provides a new approach for the development of novel supported photocatalysts with high catalytic activity and good reusability.
Solvothermal synthesis of stable nanoporous polymeric bases-crystalline TiO2 nanocomposites: visible light active and efficient photocatalysts for water treatment.

Abstract:Visible light active and stable nanoporous polymeric base-crystalline TiO2 nanocomposites were solvothermally synthesized from in situ copolymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) with 1vinylimidazolate (VI) or 4-vinylpyridine (Py) in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate without the use of any other additives (PDVB-VI-TiO2-x, PDVB-Py-TiO2-x, where x stands for the molar ratio of TiO2 to VI or Py), which showed excellent activity with respect to catalyzing the degradation of organic pollutants of p-nitrophenol (PNP) and rhodamine-B (RhB). TEM and SEM images show that PDVB-VI-TiO2-x and PDVB-Py-TiO2-x have abundant nanopores, and TiO2 nanocrystals with a high degree of crystallinity were homogeneously embedded in the PDVB-VI-TiO2-x and PDVB-Py-TiO2-x, forming a stable ` brick-and-mortar' nanostructure. PDVB-VI and PDVB-Py supports act as the glue linking TiO2 nanocrystals to form nanopores and constraining the agglomeration of TiO2 nanocrystals. XPS spectra show evidence of unique interactions between TiO2 and basic sites in these samples. UV diffuse reflectance shows that PDVB-VI-TiO2-x and PDVB-Py-TiO2-x exhibit a unique response to visible light. Catalytic tests show that the PDVB-VI-TiO2-x and PDVB-Py-TiO2-x were active in catalyzing the degradation of PNP and RhB organic pollutants under visible light irradiation. The enhanced activities of the PDVB-VI-TiO2-x and PDVB-Py-TiO2-x were ascribed to synergistic effects between abundant nanopores and the unique optical adsorption of visible light in the samples.
Preparation and characterization of the nanometer TiO2 immobilized on macro-porous-resin

Abstract:Photo-catalysis degradation of methyl orange was studied by using high-voltage mercury lamp as light source and nanometer TiO2 as catalyst and by using polypropylene-style macro-porous-resin as carrier and polypropylene-nanometer TiO2(PPT).The influence of mass proportion of TiO2 to polypropylene,highest heating temperature,the type of TiO2,the materials for extraction,etc.on degradation character of PPT compound was discussed.The results showed that the decoloring rate of methyl orange is 90.12% and TOC removal rate is 56.60% under room temperature.The light catalytic degradation of methyl orange and long-term repeated experiments showed that TiO2 immobilized on the resin is not easy to fall off,is stable and has certain photo-catalysis efficiency.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in the preparation of composite functional materials with improved performance due to their unique electrical, mechanical properties and one-dimensional nanostructure. In this paper, the composite of TiO2 nanoparticles and acid-treated carbon nanotubes distributed on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers was fabricated by sequential treatments of electrospinning, hydrothermal synthesis and freeze-drying. The resulting ternary composite of TiO2/CNTs/PMMA, which is featured with a specific surface area of 83.2 m(2)/g, effectively photodegraded a series of dyes, such as methyl blue, Rhodamine B, Sulforhodamine B and methyl orange (MO). In particular, complete degradation of MO (10 mg/L, 100 mL) was accomplished with TiO2/CNTs/PMMA (20 mg) in 40 min under UV irradiation. Moreover, the high photocatalytic activity of the ternary composite, which is superior to that of TiO2/PMMA, did not deteriorate during consecutive photodegradation tests up to ten runs. The photocatalytic mechanism of TiO2/CNTs/PMMA has been explored. The desirable high photocatalytic activity, excellent stability and easy recyclability of the ternary composite is attributed to the introduction of CNTs and the electrospun PMMA nanofiber support.

Abstract:The use of photocatalysis technology, specifically visible light photocatalysis that relies on sustainable solar energy, is the most promising for the degradation of contaminants. The interaction of conducting polymer and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) leads to the exchange that enhances the alteration of the semiconductor's surface and subsequently decreases the bandgap energy. Polypyrrole (PPy) and TiO 2 nanocomposites have promising potential for photocatalytic degradation. Chemically and electrochemical polymerization are two predominant methods for adding inorganic nanoparticles to a conducting polymer host matrix. The most commonly utilized method for producing PPy/TiO 2 nanocomposites is the in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization technique. Immobilizing PPy/TiO 2 on substrates causes more charge carriers (electron/hole pairs) to be produced on the surface of TiO 2 and enhances the rate of photocatalytic degradation compared to pure TiO 2 . The increased surface charge affects how electron/hole pairs are formed when visible light is used. This study provides a comprehensive investigation into the synthesis, characterization, application, efficiency, and mechanism of PPy/TiO 2 nanocomposites in the photocatalytic degradation process of various pollutants. Furthermore, the effect of stabilizing the TiO 2 /PPy nanocomposite on various substrates will be investigated. In conclusion, the review outlines the ongoing challenges in utilizing these photocatalysts and highlights the essential concerns that require attention in future research. Its objective is to help researchers better understand photocatalysts and encourage their use in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In the present work, we synthesized ZnO–Ag heterophase nanoparticles and ZnO–Ag modified polypropylene (PP) granules toward the degradation of dye under visible light irradiation. The nanoparticles (NPs) were produced by electrical explosion of zinc and silver twisted wires in oxygen-containing atmosphere. The heterophase structure of ZnO–Ag nanoparticles plays an important role in the enhancing the photocatalytic dye removal through the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of silver. In our investigation, the 0.5 wt.% NPs on the PP granule surface are the best composite samples to achieve the best methylene blue dye degradation (99.7%). The ZnO–Ag heterojunction retains an excellent performance of 46.4% even after being used repetitively for 4 cycling tests. This is the first report on the ZnO–Ag–ZnO/polypropylene granules to advance polymer technology for food storage and self-cleaning coating in the near future.

Abstract:Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) is the most prominent form of polypropylene, and β-phase is the most resistant to impact compared to the crystalline forms. However, β-phase is the least frequently obtained under conventional operating conditions. TiO 2 nanoparticles were functionalized with dicarboxylic acids as nucleating agents to promote β-crystal formation in iPP. The effects of three dicarboxylic acids – glutaric, pimelic, and azelaic – were characterized on TiO 2 -modified surfaces. Additionally, the interactions between TiO 2 and water molecules, crucial for the formation of chelating or bridging linkages, were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. For pimelic and azelaic acids at the polymer processing temperature, the carboxyl group band disappeared, suggesting a transition of the acid-calcium union from a bridging to a chelating linkage due to the presence of water molecules. These molecules help maintain the stability of the chains during processing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed a higher content of β-crystalline structures in iPP when modified with pimelic and azelaic acids. The research indicates that water molecules, desorbed during manufacturing, facilitate the chelating form, thereby enhancing β-nucleation and improving the surface properties of iPP composites. These β-nucleated PP composites represent a promising material solution for medical device applications, offering a compelling combination of enhanced properties and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have recently appeared in PET waste because of the introduction of opaque PET bottles. We prepare polymer blend nanocomposites (PBNANOs) by adding hydrophilic (hphi), hydrophobic (hpho), and hydrophobically modified (hphoM) titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles to 80rPP/20rPET recycled blends. Contact angle measurements show that the degree of hydrophilicity of TiO2 decreases in the order hphi > hpho > hphoM. A reduction of rPET droplet size occurs with the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles. The hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance controls the nanoparticles location. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM_ shows that hphi TiO2 preferentially locates inside the PET droplets and hpho at both the interface and PP matrix. HphoM also locates within the PP matrix and at the interface, but large loadings (12%) can completely cover the surfaces of the droplets forming a physical barrier that avoids coalescence, leading to the formation of smaller droplets. A good correlation is found between the crystallization rate of PET (determined by DSC) and nanoparticles location, where hphi TiO2 induces the highest PET crystallization rate. PET lamellar morphology (revealed by TEM) is also dependent on particle location. The mechanical behavior improves in the elastic regime with TiO2 addition, but the plastic deformation of the material is limited and strongly depends on the type of TiO2 employed.

Abstract:A novel approach to functionalize polypropylene (PP) is presented. This method consists of two steps. Firstly, oligomers of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) were synthesized via UV photo-polymerization using benzophenone (BP) as initiator. Secondly, the GMA oligomers were grafted onto PP, which was initiated by the free radicals generated through the reactivation of semipinacol dormant groups in the oligomers. By this method, the functionalization of PP could be facilely achieved in a simple system without either organic peroxide initiator or monomer; additionally, degradation of the substrate PP was not observed. This presentation is mainly focused on the characterization of the grafted PP products by XRD, DSC and TGA measurements. It is demonstrated that the melting temperature, crystallinity and the initial decomposition temperature of the grafted PP were all increased, compared with those of the origin PP; the functionalization of PP led to the change of the crystal form from the mixed form of α and β into only α form.

Abstract:Background: The formation and modification of the surface of polypropylene fibers provide a versatile material for a variety of applications. Objective: This research examines the production of new materials by pneumatic spraying of a polypropylene melt jet, on the surface of which metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are prepared using the sol-gel technique and photoreduction followed by ultra-high frequency processing. We used the obtained materials to remove Bisphenol A in the photoreactor. Method: Based on an analysis of the obtained values of the numerical characteristics in the spray zone and the physical essence of the criteria under consideration, a mechanism for the destruction of the melt jet from the formation of a fiber-forming system is proposed. Analysis of the degradation of Bisphenol A was carried out by electron spectroscopy and fluorescence. Results: A composite active layer, “polymer – inorganic nanoparticles”, on the surface of polypropylene fibers has been demonstrated to create new photocatalytic materials. Bisphenol A in water was examined as a toxicant. Conclusion: Based on the analysis of the obtained values of the numerical characteristics in the spray zone and the physical essence of the considered criteria, it was found that the pressure drop in the nozzle, the nozzle critical section area, and the rheological properties of the melt are dominating factors in the influence on the morphology and size of the ultra-fine fibers obtained by pneumatic spraying. It was determined that materials based on a polypropylene carrier with the largest diameter of 6.71 μm have the best sorption capacity for Bisphenol A. A decrease in the concentration of bisphenol A in water by more than two times in 30 minutes of UV irradiation in the presence of polypropylene was achieved without additional injection of oxidants.
Quantitative and Selective Study of the Effect of O Radicals on Polypropylene Surface Treatment

Abstract:Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying plasma-polymer surface treatments using atmospheric pressure plasmas can guide their industrial applications. To this end, a novel vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation reactive species supply (VUV PRS) method, which can quantitatively supply the desired type of reactive species to polymer surfaces, was developed in our previous study. In this study, the innovative approach is used to quantitatively study the effects of O radicals on polypropylene (PP) surface treatment. Specifically, water contact angle (WCA), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used to characterize the surface modification. The results show that the surface treatment is dominated by O radicals under the present experimental conditions. The surface modification rate, characterized by the WCA decline rate, is linearly correlated with the concentration of O radicals, that is (surface modification rate) = (8.1 & PLUSMN; 0.4)[O-s] + (0.13 & PLUSMN; 0.02) degrees s(-1), where [O-s] indicates the density of O radicals at PP surface (in ppm). The ATR-FTIR spectra shows that -OH and C=O functional groups are introduced onto the PP surface after the treatment, which results in a decrease in the WCA of the surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis shows that the surface morphology of the treated PP remains almost unchanged. Low molecular weight oxidized materials (LMWOMs) on PP surface are generated when the O radical dose that arrives at the PP surface exceeds a certain threshold. More than 60% of the oxygen-containing functional groups exist as LMWOMs when the WCA saturates. The results presented in this paper indicate that the VUV PRS method has the potential to drive the understanding of plasma-polymer surface interactions at the atomic and molecular levels. Moreover, the measured roles of the O radicals on the polymer surface at atmospheric pressure can guide the industrial application of atmospheric pressure plasma treatment.

Abstract:As a degradable polymer material, the regulation of the degradation rate of polylactide (PLA) under an actual light exposure environment is of significant importance for realizing its multifaceted applications. This study aims to enhance the photodegradation of PLA under irradiation with lower-energy wavelengths by using TiO 2 -based up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). Two modification methods were employed: doping TiO 2 with Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Tm 3+ ions integrated within the TiO 2 lattice, and creating a composite photocatalyst by adhering Y 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Tm 3+ to the exterior of TiO 2 grains. The study investigated the impact of these two different TiO 2 -based UCNPs on the photocatalytic degradation rate and mechanism of PLA under simulated sunlight irradiation. Research has found that the doped TiO 2 , due to its narrower bandgap and higher photon utilization efficiency during the up-conversion process, exhibited superior catalytic efficiency in catalyzing the photodegradation reactions of PLA compared to unmodified TiO 2 and composite TiO 2 . This work proposes a novel strategy for preparing PLA composites with enhanced photodegradation speed provided by modified TiO 2 , efficient light energy utilization offered by the up-conversion process, and potential applications in more advanced packaging and agricultural fields.

Novel Effective Photocatalytic Self-Cleaning Coatings: TiO2-Polyfluoroalkoxy Coatings Prepared by Suspension Plasma Spraying

Abstract:Photocatalytic coatings can degrade volatile organic compounds into non-toxic products, which has drawn the attention of scholars around the world. However, the pollution of dust on the coating adversely affects the photocatalytic efficiency and service life of the coating. Here, a series of TiO2-polyfluoroalkoxy (PFA) coatings with different contents of PFA were fabricated by suspension plasma spraying technology. The results demonstrate that the hybrid coatings contain a large number of circular and ellipsoidal nanoparticles and a porous micron-nano structure due to the inclusion of PFA. According to the optimized thermal spraying process parameters, TiO2 nanoparticles were partially melted to retain most of the anatase phases, whereas PFA did not undergo significant carbonization. As compared to the TiO2 coating, the static contact angle of the composite coating doped with 25 wt.% PFA increased from 28.2° to 134.1°. In addition, PFA strongly adsorbs methylene blue, resulting in a greater involvement of methylene blue molecules in the catalyst, where the catalytic rate of hybrid coatings is up to 95%. The presented nanocomposite coatings possess excellent photocatalytic and self-cleaning properties and are expected to find wider practical applications in the field of photocatalysis.

Abstract:Expanding the application field of polyolefin materials through functionalization has been a research hotspot in the past three decades. Here, a TiO2-supported anilinenaphthoquinone nickel catalyst was assembled and applied for in situ ethylene polymerization with high activity (>2000 kg mol-1h-1) to produce ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/TiO2 composites with unique physicochemical performance. The UHMWPE/TiO2 composite films and fibers prepared by in-situ ethylene polymerization are superior to the samples from the blend system in issues such as TiO2 dispersibility, mechanical property, and photocatalytic degradability. The mechanical properties (strength up to 26.8 cN/dtex, modulus up to 1248.8 cN/dtex) of the obtained UHMWPE/TiO2 composite fibers are significantly improved with a very low dosage of TiO2 (as low as 1.4 wt‰). Moreover, UHMWPE/TiO2 composites obtained by coating Al2O3 and SiO2 on the surface of TiO2 not only retain the strong absorption of ultraviolet rays, but also effectively weaken the photocatalytic degradation effect.

In this paper, the impact mechanism of AEROXIDE® TiO2 P 90 (P90) and AEROXIDE® TiO2 NKT 90 (NKT90) as nanosized hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed titania from Evonik on the electrical properties of PP was studied mainly through the crystallization behavior and space charge distribution of PP nanocomposites. Two kinds of nanostructured TiO2 were melt-blended with PP according to four types of contents. The results of alternating current (AC)/direct current (DC) breakdown field strength of the two materials were explained by studying the microstructure and space charge characteristics of the nanocomposites. Among them, hydrophilic nanostructured TiO2 are agglomerated when the content is low. The spherulite size of the nanocomposite is large, the space charge suppression ability is poor, the charge is easy to penetrate into the pattern, and the AC/DC breakdown field strength is significantly reduced. However, hydrophobic nanostructured TiO2 has better dispersion in PP, smaller spherulites, more regular arrangement, and less space charge accumulation. The charge penetration occurs only when the nanostructured material content is 2 wt%, and the AC/DC breakdown strength increases by 20.8% at the highest when the nanostructured material content is 1 wt%. It provides the possibility to prepare recyclable high-performance DC PP composite insulating materials.

Abstract:Solid-state graft polymerization of 3-isopropenyl-,-dimethylbenzene isocyanate (TMI) onto the surface of polypropylene beads was carried out in a triethylborane/oxygen redox system. Chemical structures were characterized using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results showed that TMI was successfully grafted because of the appearance of an NCO absorption peak at 2255 cm(-1). The emergence of oxygen and nitrogen elements detected by EDS and XPS also demonstrated the existence of isocyanate group on PP-grafted. The grafting ratio of TMI to polypropylene was examined using 9-(methylamino-methyl)anthracene (MAMA) as an intermediate substance. The fluorescent property of MAMA before and after reaction was characterized to guarantee interaction between MAMA and isocyanate. Thermal properties were examined using differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetric analysis. Results indicated that melting temperature (T-m) of pure PP was 168(o)C, while the PP-grafted decreased to 164(o)C. Meanwhile, decomposition temperature (T-d) decreased with increased grafting ratio for about 8 to 15(o)C; however, when styrene was introduced, T-m increased probably because of the stabilizing effect on macromolecular radicals and the suppression effect on chain degradation. Besides, the cyclotrimerization of isocyanates on the grafted polymer chain was further conducted to prepare thermally stable isocyanurate composite materials, remedying the T-d loss of PP-g-TMI by improving for 10(o)C appropriately. Confined Photo-Catalytic Oxidation: a Fast Surface Hydrophilic Modification Method for Polymeric Materials

Abstract:When a very thin persulfate salt aqueous solution layer (μm) was sandwiched between two polymer films and strong UV light irradiated the assembly from the side transparent to UV light, a fast surface hydrophilic modification method for most of commercial polymeric materials was developed. For example, irradiating for 90 s and using 30wt% ammonium persulfate, the static surface water contact angles of polymeric substrates decreased from 100 to 44° for LDPE, from 107 to 34° for HDPE, and from 73 to 15° for PET. The increases in surface hydrophilicity came from the formation of a sulfate salt group (SO4−NH4+)-ionized surface, which was characterized by XPS and ATR-FTIR. The surface topography of the modified polymer substrates were observed by SEM and AFM, and no visible etching effect to original surface were found. A possible reaction model named by ‘confined photo-catalytic oxidation’ was put forward to interpret the above results.
An efficient, stable and reusable polymer/TiO2 photocatalytic membrane for aqueous pollution treatment

Abstract:In this study, a facile, convenient and highly efficient method was applied to immobilize TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on polymer matrix to realize the both advantages of effective photocatalytic degradation and no post-processing. 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride (MTC) was introduced as a polymerizable cationic ligand to establish electrostatic interaction with TiO2 NPs, which improved the dispersion of the nanoparticles and thus enhanced the photocatalytic efficiency. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as the result of X-ray diffraction indicated that TiO2 NPs had been successfully introduced into the nanocomposites and immobilized with the matrix, and results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy proved the uniform dispersion of TiO2 NPs with particle size at around 20 nm. Meanwhile, the systematic photodegradation experiments proved the excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the prepared polymer/TiO2 nanocomposite membranes in various conditions. Specifically, the decomposition rate of methylene blue (MB) during 270 min UV irradiation can reach 99.66%. Furthermore, the nanocomposite photocatalyst was found to be remarkably stable in cyclic decomposition tests, which can keep as high as 98.7% of degradation efficiency after 20 cycles, exhibiting outstanding stability and reusability. Thereby, the polymer/TiO2 nanocomposite membrane provides prospects to be applied in photocatalytic degradation and water contamination treatments.
