Abstract:Microwave assisted with alkaline (MW-A) condition was applied in the pretreatment of swine manure, and the effect of the pretreatment on anaerobic treatment and biogas production was evaluated in this study. The two main microwaving (MW) parameters, microwaving power and reaction time, were optimized for the pretreatment. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effect of alkaline microwaving process for manure pretreatment at various values of pH and energy input. Results showed that the manure disintegration degree was maximized of 63.91% at energy input of 54 J/g and pH of 12.0, and variance analysis indicated that pH value played a more important role in the pretreatment than in energy input. Anaerobic digestion results demonstrated that MW-A pretreatment not only significantly increased cumulative biogas production, but also shortened the duration for a stable biogas production rate. Therefore, the alkaline microwaving pretreatment could become an alternative process for effective treatment of swine manure.
EFFECT OF MICROBIAL ADDITIVES COMBINED WITH AERATION ON REDUCTION OF NUTRIENTS IN SWINE MANURE

Abstract:The research presented in this article evaluated a technique using manure additives (Sporzyme and activated sludge) coupled with aeration treatment in reducing nutrients from liquid swine manure. Plastic columns, 91.6 cm in height and 15.3 cm in internal diameter, were each filled with 15 L liquid swine manure. Aeration was provided to each column by an air pump at an airflow rate of 2.0 L/min, controlled by individual airflow meters mounted on the columns. The experiment included five treatments: (1) control (no aeration and no additives), (2) aeration alone, (3) aeration with a microbial additive (Sporzyme), (4) aeration with activated sludge inoculum without anaerobic incubation prior to aeration, and (5) aeration with activated sludge inoculum with three days of anaerobic incubation prior to aeration. The results indicated that total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ammonia-N, and total soluble phosphorus were reduced by about 42%, 56%, and 72%, respectively, by all the treatments except the control. The reduction of TKN was found to be mainly attributed to the reduction of ammonia because its share of TKN was remarkably reduced at the end of the test. Although Sporzyme significantly increases the aerobic count in the manure, data from this study have showed no advantage of its use (or the activated sludge as seeding) solely for enhancing nutrient reduction in swine manure under aeration treatment since there was little difference found in terms of either nitrogen or phosphorus reduction between treatments with and without additives.
Characteristics of Biogas Producing by Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Agricultural Straw and Swine Wastewater Based on Improved Straw-Bed Bioreactor

Abstract:Agricultural straw and livestock wastewater were the main source of agricultural contaminant, how to reduce, reuse and recycle these wastes has become more and more important. Anaerobic digestion is an attractive technique for bio-waste treatment which can produce biogas and bio-fertilizer. Co-digested two and more wastes is beneficial for anaerobic digestion. By this way, we can not only get more biogas, but also reduce the investment of biogas plant. Two or more agricultural wastes were converted to biogas in one anaerobic bioreactor. Although much work has been done on anaerobic co-digestion of two or more bio-wastes, but most work was done with batch model and there was no report on anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural straw and livestock wastewater. In pig farming, swine wastewater is the main contaminant and is generated every day, so swine wastewater must be added to the anaerobic digester daily, which means that we must use semi-continuous feeding bioreactor in a pig farm biogas plant. In this study, the feasibility of straw-bed anaerobic bioreactor (SAB) was investigated. In the straw-bed bioreactor, baling straw was used as the stationary phase and swine wastewater was used as the mobile phase, and a wastewater advanced anaerobic bioreactor (USR) was connected to the posterior of the straw-bed bioreactor. The results showed that the straw-bed anaerobic digestion system (SADS) was feasible and there was no significant difference between co-digestion and mono-digestion of straw and swine wastewater. The total solid biogas yield of straw of SAB and mono-digestion were 394.96 and 382.11 mL/g, respectively. Compared to mono-digestion, the stability of daily biogas yield and average methane content of co-digestion was improved significantly. The average methane content of SADS, baling straw and swine wastewater digested alone were 57.40%, 47.32% and 60.37%, respectively. The volumetric biogas production was also improved significantly and the volumetric biogas production of treatment of baling straw and swine wastewater digested alone were 69.42% and 66.94% to that of SADS. After 35 days reaction, air permeability of baling straw was decreased which leading to more serious floating of baling straw and short flow of influent. After that, COD content of effluent increased sharply and then maintained at higher level. Meanwhile daily biogas yield of wastewater advanced anaerobic bioreactor increased sharply. Therefore, it is necessary to connect a wastewater advanced anaerobic bioreactor to the posterior of straw-bed bioreactor in order to deep purification of effluent of SAB. The above results indicated that co-digested baling straw and swine wastewater in straw-bed anaerobic digestion system is feasible and is beneficial for biogas production.

Abstract:The impact of four nano-bubble water (NBW) additions on the hydrolysis rate, methane yield, and microbial community of co-digestion of cabbage waste (CW) and cow manure (CM) under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions were investigated. Adding NBW under mesophilic conditions promoted hydrolysis, and the highest soluble chemical oxygen demand of the mesophilic digesters with the addition of CO 2 -NBW increased by 15.86%. Methane yield in the mesophilic digesters with Air-NBW and CO 2 -NBW increased by 17.54% and 14.72%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of NBW further accelerated the methane yield rate under mesophilic conditions. Due to the influence of thermophilic temperature, the impact of NBW addition on hydrolysis, methane yield, and methane yield rate in the thermophilic digesters did not differ significantly from the control. The addition of Air-NBW and N 2 -NBW in the thermophilic digesters resulted in only marginal increases in methane yield, by 1.09% and 5.61%, respectively. NBW addition enhanced both the abundance and diversity of microbial communities in both mesophilic and thermophilic digesters. The addition of NBW represents a promising technological advancement for enhancing the efficiency of anaerobic co-digestion of CW and CM.

Abstract:The gradual increase in cattle farming has led to a huge production of cattle manure (CM), but the conventional treatment methods are less efficient. In this study, the treatment method of anaerobic digestion (AD) of high-solids CM by combining nanobubble water (NBW) with different gases was proposed to present a new idea for the reduction, harmlessness, and resourcefulness of CM. It was found that the performance of the digester with added NBW was better than the control. Among them, the cumulative methane yield T-Air: 227.09 mL g-1 VSadded and T-CO2: 226.12 mL g-1 VSadded increased by 17.72 % and 17.22 %, respectively, compared with the control T: 192.90 mL g-1 VSadded under thermophilic conditions. Under mesophilic conditions, M-Air: 162.39 mL g-1 VSadded increased by 9.68 % compared with control M: 148.05 mL g-1 VSadded. Microbial communities analyzed at the genus level revealed that the relative abundance of bacteria favorable to hydrolysis and acid-producing processes, such as Defluviitalea, Haloplasma, and Bacillus, increased to varying degrees. Moreover, the relative abundance of archaea favorable for methanogenesis, such as Methanoculleus, Methanobrevibacter, and Methanosarcina, also increased to varying degrees. Therefore, the addition of NBW promoted the hydrolysis of high-solids CM, enhanced the stability of the reaction, improved the methanogenic performance, and increased the RA of favorable genera, which ultimately led to a better performance of the AD of high-solids CM.

Abstract:Nanobubble water promotes the degradation of difficult-to-degrade organic matter, improves the activity of electron transfer systems during anaerobic digestion, and optimizes the composition of anaerobic microbial communities. Therefore, this study proposes the use of nanobubble water to improve the yield of medium chain carboxylic acids produced from cow manure by chain elongation. The experiment was divided into two stages: the first stage involved the acidification of cow manure to produce volatile acidic fatty acids as electron acceptors, and the second phase involved the addition of lactic acid as an electron donor for the chain elongation. Three experimental groups were established, and air, H 2 , and N 2 nanobubble water were added in the second stage. Equal amounts of deionized water were added in the control group. The results showed that nanobubble water supplemented with air significantly increased the caproic acid concentration to 15.10 g/L, which was 55.03 % greater than that of the control group. The relative abundances of Bacillus and Caproiciproducens , which are involved in chain elongation, and Syntrophomonas , which is involved in electron transfer, increased. The unique ability of air nanobubble water supplemented to break down the cellulose matrix resulted in further decomposition of the recalcitrant material in cow manure. This effect subsequently increased the number of microorganisms associated with lignocellulose degradation, increasing carbohydrate metabolism and ATP-binding cassette transporter protein activity and enhancing fatty acid cycling pathways during chain elongation. Ultimately, this approach enabled the efficient production of medium chain carboxylic acids.

Abstract:Nanobubble (NB) technology has gained popularity in the environmental field owing to its distinctive characteristics and ecological safety. More recently, the application of NB technology in anaerobic digestion (AD) systems has been proven to promote substrate degradation and boost the production of biogas (H 2 and/or CH 4 ). This review presents the recent advancements in the application of NB technology in AD systems. Meanwhile, it also sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of NB technology that contribute to the enhanced biogas production from AD of organic solid wastes. Specifically, the working principles of the NB generator are first summarized, and then the structure of the NB generator is optimized to accommodate the demand for NB characteristics in the AD system. Subsequently, it delves into a detailed discussion of how the addition of nanobubble water (NBW) affects AD performance and the different factors that NB can potentially contribute. As a simple and environmentally friendly additive, NBW was commonly used in the AD process to enhance the fluidity and mass transfer characteristics of digestate. Additionally, NB has the potential to enhance the functionality of different types of microbial enzymes that play crucial roles in the AD process. This includes boosting extracellular hydrolase activities, optimizing coenzyme F 420 , and improving cellulase function. Finally, it is proposed that NBW has development potential for the pretreatment of substrate and inoculum, with future development being directed towards this aim.

Abstract:This study investigated the performance of combined nanobubble water (NW) and digestate in the soaking hydrolysis process. Two types of NW (CO 2 NW and O 2 NW) with digestate were used to soak rice straw for 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days. During soaking process, the volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration in the treatment with O 2 NW and digestate for 3 days (O 2 NW-3 d) reached 7179.5 mg-HAc/L. Moreover, the highest specific methane yield (SMY) obtained in this treatment could reach 336.7 NmL/gVS. Although the addition of NW did not significantly increase SMY from digestate soaking, NW could accelerate the rate of methane production and reduce digestion time of T 80 . The enrichment of Enterobacter in the soaking process was observed when using CO 2 NW and O 2 NW as soaking solutions which played important roles in VFA production. This study provides a new insight into environment-friendly enhanced crop straw pretreatment, combining NW and digestate soaking hydrolysis.

Abstract:C EREBROSPINAL fluid shunts into the peritoneal cavity are frequently used at Children's Hospital Medical Center, despite their limitations. Considerations leading to a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt include operative scarring of neck veins, cardiac disease, and blood stream or other infection. Similarly, lumbar-peritoneal shunts have been utilized for small or infectionscarred ventricular systems, to avoid unnecessary instrumentation of intact brain and because revision to accommodate body growth seems to be required less often with the shunt tubing lying transverse to the body axis. It is well known that peritoneal shunts often become obstructed by omentum or peritoneal adhesions. This report presents three instances of large, intra-abdominal, cerebrospinal fluid cysts as an unusual, and occasionally dramatic, sequel to peritoneal shunts. Jackson and Snodgrass 3 made brief allusion to one of their 62 patients who formed a "huge omental cyst" around the tip of a peritoneal catheter. Harsh, 2 in his series of 12 patients with fallopian tube peritoneal shunts, reported one in whom two abdominal procedures for shunt were followed by the formation of a "large thin-walled cyst about the fimbria." Unnecessary and extensive evaluation of an abdominal mass may be avoided by awareness and suspicion of this complication of shunting; moreover, its presence may influence future management.
Abrogating the inhibitory effects of volatile fatty acids and ammonia in overloaded food waste anaerobic digesters via the supplementation of nano-zero valent iron modified biochar

Abstract:The effects of different recovery strategies on inhibited anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste (FW) was examined in this study, with the finding that dosing pine woodchip biochar could reverse the effect of volatile fatty acids (VFA) inhibition (mainly propionic acid) and yielded 105.55% more methane than the control. The addition of nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) promoted the generation of VFA while causing a slight inhibition of the methanogens initially. In due time, the nZVI digester was able to recover and eventually produced 192.22% more methane compared to the control. Finally, nZVI-modified biochar was proved to be able to avoid the inhibitory effects brought about by the nanoparticles. The results indicated reduced dosage requirements as compared to using pristine pine woodchip biochar and accumulated 204.84% more methane than the control. The introduction of nZVI-biochar also promoted the growth of Methanosarcina species methanogens, which can perform direct-interspecies electron transfer. While all the recovery strategies using the additives were feasible, the results suggested that the use of modified biochar holds great potential as a significantly lower amount of amendment is required for the recovery of the inhibited AD system.

Abstract:Severe inhibition by volatile fatty acids (VFAs) frequently occurs during the dry anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste at high organic load rate (OLR), leading to decreased biogas production and even the collapse of the anaerobic digestion system. In this study, VFAs accumulation was significantly reduced by adding powder-activated carbon (PAC) or alkaline additives (AA), thus restoring the collapsed system to a stable operating state. With the addition of PAC or AA, the maximal OLR reached 11.14 g VS/(L·d), which was 30 % higher than observed without any additives (control group), while the VFAs concentration was maintained below 3000 mg/L. At this OLR, the volumetric biogas production rate stabilized at 5.1 L/(L·d) in the presence of PAC and AA, while that of the control group gradually decreased to zero. The VFAs concentration with PAC addition was 86 % lower than that of the control group, possibly because PAC might stimulate the formation of direct interspecies electron transfer between syntrophic bacteria and methanogens ( Methanosarcina ), thereby promoting VFAs degradation. The addition of AA, which resulted in a 95 % decrease in ammonia-nitrogen concentration, can provide a good growth environment for the microorganisms involved in acidogenesis and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis.

Abstract:Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) is often limited by the slow hydrolysis and/or poor substrate availability. Increased attention has been given to enhance the hydrolysis and acidification of WAS recently. This study presented an efficient and green strategy based on the combined use of nitrite pretreatment and alkaline pH to stimulate hydrolysis and VFA accumulation from WAS. Results showed that both proteins and polysaccharides increased in the presence of nitrite, indicating the enhancement of sludge solubilization and hydrolysis processes. Mechanism investigations showed that nitrite pretreatment could disintegrate the sludge particle and disperse extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Then, anaerobic digestion tests demonstrated VFA production increased with nitrite treatment. The maximal VFA accumulation was achieved with 0.1 g N/L nitrite dosage and pH 10.0 at a sludge retention time (SRT) of 7 days, which was much higher VFA production in comparison with the blank, sole nitrite pretreatment, or sole pH 10. The potential analysis suggested that the combined nitrite pretreatment and alkaline pH is capable of enhancing WAS digestion with a great benefit for biological nutrient removal (BNR).

Abstract:Food waste (FW) is prone to accumulate volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during anaerobic digestion (AD). In this study, nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) was used to enhance AD system stability and improve methane production efficiency. Results showed that nZVI facilitated the AD obviously. The highest cumulative methane production of 195.63 ± 5.38 mL/g VS was obtained at the nZVI dosage of 1.0 g/L, which was 22.6 % higher than that of the control. The appropriate addition of nZVI mainly strengthened the methanogenic stage of AD of FW, reduced the accumulation of VFAs and alleviated the pH fluctuation of the system. The corrosion hydrogen production efficiency of nZVI during AD first increased and then decreased with the increase of nZVI addition. Microbial community analysis demonstrated that the addition of nZVI mainly increased the abundance of hydrotropic methanogens and DIET-associated methanogens, and promoted the growth of bacteria in a symbiotic relationship with methanogens. In , the nZVI addition supplied a promising approach to improve the methane production efficiency from AD of FW.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) is widely used on waste treatment for its great capability of organic degradation and energy recovery. Accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) caused by impact loadings often leads to the acidification and failure of AD systems. Bioaugmentation is a promising way to accelerate VFA degradation but the succession of microbial communities usually caused unpredictable consequences. In this study, we used the sludge previously acclimated with VFAs for the bioaugmentation of an acidified anaerobic digestion system and increased the methane yield by 8.03–9.59 times. To see how the succession of microbial communities affected bioaugmentation, dual-chamber devices separated by membrane filters were used to control the interactions between the acidified and acclimated sludges. The experimental group with separated sludges showed significant advantages of VFA consumption (5.5 times less final VFA residue than the control), while the group with mixed sludge produced more methane (4.0 times higher final methane yield than the control). Microbial community analysis further highlighted the great influences of microbial interaction on the differentiation of metabolic pathways. Acetoclastic methanogens from the acclimated sludge acted as the main contributors to pH neutralization and methane production during the early phase of bioaugmentation, and maintained active in the mixed sludge but degenerated in the separated sludges where interactions between sludge microbiotas were limited. Instead, syntrophic butyrate and acetate oxidation coupled with nitrate and sulfate reduction was enriched in the separated sludges, which lowered the methane conversion rate and would cause the failure of bioaugmentation. Our study revealed the importance of microbial interactions and the functionality of enriched microbes, as well as the potential strategies to optimize the durability and efficiency of bioaugmentation.

Abstract:Additional various carbon and free riboflavin could improve anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS). However, these substances were not reused. In this study, a reusable riboflavin and carbon black (RCB) co-modified filler was developed and combined with alkaline pretreatment for enhancing the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and methane during anaerobic digestion of WAS. The results showed that RCB-modified fillers exhibited a promoting effect on the reduction of alkali-pretreated WAS. The amounts of the accumulated VFAs mainly containing acetate and the produced methane rose with the increased concentration of immobilized riboflavin (0-0.75 g/L) in the presence of 4 g/L carbon black. When the alkaline pretreatment time of WAS increased from 3 d to 8 d, the amount of methane production increased from 22.8% to 63.9% in the presence of 0.75 g/L riboflavin and 4 g/L carbon black compared with that without RCB-modified fillers. Moreover, 0.75 g/L riboflavin and 4 g/L carbon black had a synergetic effect on promoting methane production via broadening extracellular electron transfer pathways. During this process, microbial dehydrogenase activity, electron transport system activity and coenzyme F420 were enhanced. Microbial community analysis showed that RCB-modified filler addition promoted the enrichment of Syntrophomonas and Pseudomonas involved in direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). These results indicated that DIET establishment was accelerated. Meanwhile, the populations of acetic acid-producing bacteria including Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and Proteiniphilum, aceticlastic and acid-tolerant methanogenic archaea including Methanosarcina and Methanosaeta, RumEn_M2 were increased. These results indicate that RCB-modified fillers coupled with alkaline pretreatment is an effective method to promote the production of methane during anaerobic digestion of WAS.

Abstract:This work investigated the effectiveness of free nitrous acid (FNA) in enhancing organic waste solubilization to improve biogas production in anaerobic digestion (AD). The results indicated that FNA pretreatment can enhance soluble organic content and control H 2 S odor in tested organic wastes, including food waste, sewage sludge, and their combination. However, a significant decrease (>50 %) in FNA concentration was found in the reactors, possibly due to denitrifier-driven NO 2 – consumption. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests showed a 25 ± 8 % enhancement in CH 4 production in the reactors fed with mixed substrate pretreated with 2.9 mg FNA-N/L. However, the presence of NO 2 – (325.6–2368.0 mg N/L) in some BMP reactors, due to carryover from FNA pretreatment, adversely affected CH 4 production (>55 %) and prolonged lag time (>4.2 times). These findings are valuable for researchers and practitioners in waste management, offering insights for implementing FNA pretreatment to enhance the biodegradability of organic wastes in AD.
