Abstract:Background: Spontaneous rupture of an ovarian artery aneurysm is an extremely rare and usually life-threatening event, most often associated with pregnancy. Case: A 46-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with left lower abdominal pain and cold sweating. Contrast-enhanced dynamic computed tomography (CT) showed a left retroperitoneal hematoma with extravasation of contrast medium. Reconstructed images of a spiral CT disclosed a leaking left ovarian artery aneurysm. An exploratory laparotomy with ligation of the aneurysm and evacuation of the hematoma was performed. Conclusion: This is the third case of ruptured ovarian artery aneurysm not related to pregnancy and the first reported case related to blood pressure. A review of the literature and practical considerations on this rare condition are presented.

Abstract:C EREBROSPINAL fluid shunts into the peritoneal cavity are frequently used at Children's Hospital Medical Center, despite their limitations. Considerations leading to a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt include operative scarring of neck veins, cardiac disease, and blood stream or other infection. Similarly, lumbar-peritoneal shunts have been utilized for small or infectionscarred ventricular systems, to avoid unnecessary instrumentation of intact brain and because revision to accommodate body growth seems to be required less often with the shunt tubing lying transverse to the body axis. It is well known that peritoneal shunts often become obstructed by omentum or peritoneal adhesions. This report presents three instances of large, intra-abdominal, cerebrospinal fluid cysts as an unusual, and occasionally dramatic, sequel to peritoneal shunts. Jackson and Snodgrass 3 made brief allusion to one of their 62 patients who formed a "huge omental cyst" around the tip of a peritoneal catheter. Harsh, 2 in his series of 12 patients with fallopian tube peritoneal shunts, reported one in whom two abdominal procedures for shunt were followed by the formation of a "large thin-walled cyst about the fimbria." Unnecessary and extensive evaluation of an abdominal mass may be avoided by awareness and suspicion of this complication of shunting; moreover, its presence may influence future management.

Abstract:The impact of four nano-bubble water (NBW) additions on the hydrolysis rate, methane yield, and microbial community of co-digestion of cabbage waste (CW) and cow manure (CM) under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions were investigated. Adding NBW under mesophilic conditions promoted hydrolysis, and the highest soluble chemical oxygen demand of the mesophilic digesters with the addition of CO 2 -NBW increased by 15.86%. Methane yield in the mesophilic digesters with Air-NBW and CO 2 -NBW increased by 17.54% and 14.72%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of NBW further accelerated the methane yield rate under mesophilic conditions. Due to the influence of thermophilic temperature, the impact of NBW addition on hydrolysis, methane yield, and methane yield rate in the thermophilic digesters did not differ significantly from the control. The addition of Air-NBW and N 2 -NBW in the thermophilic digesters resulted in only marginal increases in methane yield, by 1.09% and 5.61%, respectively. NBW addition enhanced both the abundance and diversity of microbial communities in both mesophilic and thermophilic digesters. The addition of NBW represents a promising technological advancement for enhancing the efficiency of anaerobic co-digestion of CW and CM.

Abstract:This study investigated the performance of combined nanobubble water (NW) and digestate in the soaking hydrolysis process. Two types of NW (CO 2 NW and O 2 NW) with digestate were used to soak rice straw for 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days. During soaking process, the volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration in the treatment with O 2 NW and digestate for 3 days (O 2 NW-3 d) reached 7179.5 mg-HAc/L. Moreover, the highest specific methane yield (SMY) obtained in this treatment could reach 336.7 NmL/gVS. Although the addition of NW did not significantly increase SMY from digestate soaking, NW could accelerate the rate of methane production and reduce digestion time of T 80 . The enrichment of Enterobacter in the soaking process was observed when using CO 2 NW and O 2 NW as soaking solutions which played important roles in VFA production. This study provides a new insight into environment-friendly enhanced crop straw pretreatment, combining NW and digestate soaking hydrolysis.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass is abundant in the environment, which can be used as the substrate for methane production via anaerobic digestion (AD). However, the methane production efficiency from lignocellulosic biomass is relatively low, mainly due to its refractory components, of which lignin is the major barrier to bioconversion and also resists the hydrolysis of lignocellulose, thus limiting the AD process. This study compared the effects of two different gases (N2 and CO2) nanobubble water (NBW) on methane production from lignin using mono-digestion and co-digestion with acetic acid (HAc) at four different total organic carbon (TOC) ratios of HAc to lignin (97.5%:2.5%, 95%:5%, 90%:10%, and 80%:20%). Results show that N2-NBW is the promising NBW which can enhance methane production by 22% compared to the control. In addition, co-digestion of lignin with acetic acid reflects a higher methane production potential in comparison with the mono-digestion of lignin, achieving a much higher methane production (824–1061 mL CH4/g-TOCremoved) when lignin content was less than 20% (TOC basis) and the highest lignin reduction (43%) at the TOC ratio of HAc to lignin of 95%:5%.

Nanobubble water promotes anaerobic digestion of high-solids cattle manure under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

Abstract:The gradual increase in cattle farming has led to a huge production of cattle manure (CM), but the conventional treatment methods are less efficient. In this study, the treatment method of anaerobic digestion (AD) of high-solids CM by combining nanobubble water (NBW) with different gases was proposed to present a new idea for the reduction, harmlessness, and resourcefulness of CM. It was found that the performance of the digester with added NBW was better than the control. Among them, the cumulative methane yield T-Air: 227.09 mL g-1 VSadded and T-CO2: 226.12 mL g-1 VSadded increased by 17.72 % and 17.22 %, respectively, compared with the control T: 192.90 mL g-1 VSadded under thermophilic conditions. Under mesophilic conditions, M-Air: 162.39 mL g-1 VSadded increased by 9.68 % compared with control M: 148.05 mL g-1 VSadded. Microbial communities analyzed at the genus level revealed that the relative abundance of bacteria favorable to hydrolysis and acid-producing processes, such as Defluviitalea, Haloplasma, and Bacillus, increased to varying degrees. Moreover, the relative abundance of archaea favorable for methanogenesis, such as Methanoculleus, Methanobrevibacter, and Methanosarcina, also increased to varying degrees. Therefore, the addition of NBW promoted the hydrolysis of high-solids CM, enhanced the stability of the reaction, improved the methanogenic performance, and increased the RA of favorable genera, which ultimately led to a better performance of the AD of high-solids CM.

Abstract:The traditional hydrochar shows limited ability to promote methane production during anaerobic digestion of organic solid waste. This study explored the effect of hydrochar modified using nitrogen and iron on methane production and microbial communities during the co-anaerobic digestion (co-AD) of cow manure and corn straw. Compared with unmodified hydrochar prepared from biogas residue (BHC), iron and nitrogen-iron modified hydrochar (BHC-Fe and BHC-N) improved the specific surface area (SSA) and proportion of oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs) related to direct interspecies electron transfer. The results showed that, compared to the control group (without hydrochar addition), the total methane production increased by 30%, 36%, and 46% in the BHC, BHC-Fe, and BHC-N groups, respectively. The addition of modified hydrochar improved the microbial diversity and enrichment of Methanobacterium, Methanobrevibacter, and Methanosarcina spp., with BHC-N being the most effective. COD and Methanobrevibacter showed the highest explanation for methane production in AD performance indexes and archaeal genera (66.4% and 29.3%). Surface OCFGs of hydrochar had a more significant and direct effect on methane production than the SSA and archaeal genera. Therefore, the addition of BHC-N contributes more to promote methane production during the co-AD of cow manure and corn straw. This study could provide the new strategies for improving the co-AD of cow manure and corn straw performance, further promoting the resourcing and disposal of cow manure and corn straw.
Cobalt oxide nanoparticles as a new strategy for enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion of noxious aquatic weeds

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4-NPs) supplementation on anaerobic microbial population changes and anaerobic digestion (AD) performance and production. Co3O4-NPs (3 mg/L) showed the maximum enhancement of biogas yield over the cow dung (CD) as control and the co-digestion process of CD with water hyacinth (WH) by 58.9 and 27.2 %, respectively. Furthermore, methane (CH4) yield was enhanced by 89.96 and 43.4 % over CD and co-digestion processes, respectively. Additionally, the microbiological assessment analysis using VIT® gene probe technology showed that Co3O4-NPs enhance the viability of total bacterial cells by 9 %. The techno-economic analysis reflects the revenue of this strategy on the highest net energy content of biogas, which was achieved with 3 mg/L Co3O4-NPs and was 428.05 kWh with a net profit of 67.66 USD/m3 of the substrate. Therefore, nanoparticle supplementation to the AD process can be considered a promising approach to enhance biogas and CH4.
Understanding the mechanisms behind micro-aeration to enhance anaerobic digestion of corn straw

Abstract:Micro-aeration has been shown to be favorable for anaerobic digestion (AD) process. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully revealed. In this study, the effects of micro-aeration on AD process were investigated, the underlying mechanisms were also explored by comprehensively analysis of the substrate degradation, intermediate products, electron-transfer capacity, key enzymes and microbial communities. Results showed micro-aeration could benefit the AD process, and the beneficial effects were oxygen intensity-dependent. Maximum methane yield (262.0 ± 6.0 mL/(g·VS)) was achieved at micro-aeration of 0.2 mL/(g·VS·day), which was 7.8% higher than that of the control (without micro-aeration). The volatile fatty acids concentration, cellulase activity, soluble humic acids (SHAs) concentration and substrate degradation rate were all enhanced under micro-aeration condition. Moreover, micro-aeration could regulate the bacterial and archaeal communities: bacterial diversities and relative abundances of facultative and acetate-oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Firmicutes, Synergistota and Spirochaetota) increased, leading to higher substrate utilization rate; archaeal diversities decreased while oxygen-tolerating methanogens (e.g., Methanobacterium) became dominant to promote the methanogenesis. AD system with micro-aeration showed higher electron-transfer capacity and better conductive environment due to the increased SHAs concentration. The increased relative abundance of direct-interspecies-electron-transfer (DIET)-associated microbes could be favorable to DIET-based syntrophic methanogenesis which promotes AD under micro-aeration.

Abstract:In order to improve the methane production and concentration, effect of activated carbon addition on the anaerobic fermentation of corn straw under the conditions of mesophilic temperature ( 38℃ ) and thermophilic temperature ( 50℃ ) was investigated in this study. The results showed that the addition of activated carbon could significantly promote methane production. Compared with the control group in mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, cumulative methane production could be increased by 63%and 96% in test groups. By DGGE analysis, the bacterium enriched by addition of activated carbon was mainly Clostridiales bacterium, compared to Bacillus (without adding activated carbon) in the thermophilic system, while the differences in fermentation with adding activated carbon and without adding activated carbon was not significant in the mesophilic system. With addition of activated carbon, the archaea enriched in the fermentation liquid was mainly Methanosaeta concilii in the mesophilic system, whereas the archaea enriched in the fermentation liquid was mainly Methanosarcina acetivorans in the thermophilic system. The archaea enriched on activated carbon was mainly Methanosaeta concilii at mesophilic temperature, while the archaea enriched on activated carbon was mainly Methanosarcina thermophila at thermophilic temperature.
Effect of nanobubble water on medium chain carboxylic acids production in anaerobic digestion of cow manure

Abstract:Nanobubble water promotes the degradation of difficult-to-degrade organic matter, improves the activity of electron transfer systems during anaerobic digestion, and optimizes the composition of anaerobic microbial communities. Therefore, this study proposes the use of nanobubble water to improve the yield of medium chain carboxylic acids produced from cow manure by chain elongation. The experiment was divided into two stages: the first stage involved the acidification of cow manure to produce volatile acidic fatty acids as electron acceptors, and the second phase involved the addition of lactic acid as an electron donor for the chain elongation. Three experimental groups were established, and air, H 2 , and N 2 nanobubble water were added in the second stage. Equal amounts of deionized water were added in the control group. The results showed that nanobubble water supplemented with air significantly increased the caproic acid concentration to 15.10 g/L, which was 55.03 % greater than that of the control group. The relative abundances of Bacillus and Caproiciproducens , which are involved in chain elongation, and Syntrophomonas , which is involved in electron transfer, increased. The unique ability of air nanobubble water supplemented to break down the cellulose matrix resulted in further decomposition of the recalcitrant material in cow manure. This effect subsequently increased the number of microorganisms associated with lignocellulose degradation, increasing carbohydrate metabolism and ATP-binding cassette transporter protein activity and enhancing fatty acid cycling pathways during chain elongation. Ultimately, this approach enabled the efficient production of medium chain carboxylic acids.

Enhancing methane production from corn straw via illumination-assisted Fe3O4/g-C3N4 nanocomposite in anaerobic digestion

Abstract:This study proposes a novel anaerobic digestion (AD) strategy combining recyclable photoactivated nanomaterials with illumination to enhance electronic transfer for anaerobic microorganisms. Results showed that 7000 Lux illumination increased methane production yield and rate. Incorporating Fe3O4 into graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) created a recyclable Fe3O4/g-C3N4 (FG) nanocomposite with improved light absorption, conductivity, redox properties, and methane promotion. The highest methane yield from corn straw was achieved with 7000 Lux and 1.5 g/L FG nanocomposite, 22.6% higher than the dark control. The AD system exhibited increased adenosine triphosphate content, improved redox performance, reduced electron transfer resistance, and higher photocurrent intensity. These improvements bolstered the microorganisms and key genes involved in hydrolysis and acidification, which in turn optimized the acetoclastic pathway. Furthermore, this strategy promoted microorganisms associated with direct interspecies electron transfer, fostering a favorable environment for methanogenic activities, paving the way for future anaerobic reactor developments.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate potential methane production through anaerobic co-digestion of rice straw and digested swine manure with different total solids. The research was carried out in bench scale with utilizing batch system. To evaluate the stability of anaerobic co-digestion process, the experiment was run in triplicate. The anaerobic co-digestion process was operated in 500 mL batch digesters under constant agitation speed and temperature. The agitation speed was maintained at 270 r/min. Temperature of the batch system was set and maintained at 35 degrees C. Digested swine manure utilized in this experiment was obtained from semi-continuous digesters run at steady state condition, with 25 days of hydraulic retention time under mesophilic condition. Rice straw (RS) generated the highest methane production at 3% total solids (TS) which was around (1814 +/- 47.43) mL, where in this concentration, it had C:N ratio at 10.6:1. Rice straw obtained the highest methane yield at 3% TS, which was around (141.4 +/- 3.70) mL CH4/g volatile solids (VS) added. Rice straw also had the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and VS reduction at 3% TS which were around (52.97%+/- 1.46%) and (61.81%+/- 1.04%), respectively.
Rice Straw and Swine Manure Anaerobic co-digestion Enhancement Through Bioaugmentation: Effect on the Microbial Community

Abstract:The degradation of agricultural residues and their bioconversion to methane is still hampered by the search for pre-treatment strategies due to the lignocellulosic content that limits the process efficiency. Adding an enriched microbial consortium could be an alternative for the biological treatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Therefore, during the degradation process, it is necessary to study the dynamics and structure of the microbial community. The objective of this study was to evaluate the addition of an enriched microbial consortium and its effect on the methane-producing prokaryotic community during the anaerobic co-digestion of rice straw and swine manure. Two 10 L semi-continuous stirred tank reactors were used (control and bioaugmentation), during 70 days at 35 ± 2 °C, increasing organic loading rates up to 1.8 g VS/L/d. The diversity and dynamics of the microbial community were analyzed and taxonomic identification was obtained by Ion Torrent metagenomic technique. A higher production was achieved in the bioaugmented reactor (approx. 344 L N /kgVS) concerning the control reactor, increasing the methane yield by 40% (v/v). The metagenomic method allowed the identification down to the genus and species level of the microbial consortium and the prokaryotic community of the reactors, which enabled the assumption of possible metabolic pathways. In both reactors, species diversity decreased over time, indicating a greater specialization of the microbial community. Cellulolytic and methanogenic acetoclastic microorganisms were favored, which supported the higher methane production obtained. The results demonstrate that the consortium could be used as a bioproduct to treat agricultural wastes for energy purposes.

Abstract:Effects of sewage sludge (SS) and fresh leachate (FL) addition on corn straw (CS) digestion and underlying mechanisms were investigated. Co-digestion of CS, SS and FL significantly increased cumulative methane production by 7.2–61.1%. Further analysis revealed that co-digestion acted mainly on slowly degradable substrates and exerted dual effects on methane production potential, which was closely related to the volatile solids (VS) content. Antagonistic effects of co-digestion resulted from the dominance of norank_c_Bathyarchaeia , a mixotrophic methanogen that may generate methane inefficiently and consume existing methane. The synergistic enhancement of methane production (0.7–12.7%) was achieved in co-digestion with 33.5–45.5% of total VS added as SS and FL. Co-digestion with more balanced nutrients and higher buffering capacity enriched Actinobacteriota , Firmicutes , and Synergistota , thereby facilitating the substrate degradation. Furthermore, the predominant acetoclastic methanogens, increased hydrogenotrophic methanogens, and decreased methylotrophic methanogens in the digester combined to prompt the synergy.

Abstract:During nonthyroidal illness in man and a number of experimental animals, serum total thyroid hormone levels are decreased. To determine whether the reduction in thyroid hormones that occurs during nonthyroidal illness is beneficial or harmful to the host, an experimental animal model was developed. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae type I, a known human pathogen. By 40 h after inoculation, serum total and free T4 and total T3 decreased significantly. Serum free T3 also decreased slightly but not significantly. When infected animals were injected daily with T4, there was a decrease in the time to death and significant increase in the total number of deaths compared to controls receiving vehicle alone. Control experiments showed that T4 did not affect the growth of S. pneumoniae on blood agar plates, and the injected T4 did not cause hyperthyroidism. These results suggest that the decrease in serum thyroid hormone that occurs during nonthyroidal illness is beneficial and may serve a role in maintaining homeostasis by conserving metabolic energy during infection as an important adaptation that prolongs survival.

Abstract:This study conducted anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of chicken manure (CM) and corn straw (CS) with various mixing ratios (1:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, and 4:6, VS) through batch experiments to investigate gas production performance, changes in biogas slurry fertilizer efficiency, and microbial community. The results indicate that, compared to anaerobic digestion (AD), AcoD promoted methane production and reduced the accumulation of toxic substances, such as ammonia nitrogen. Methane production was the highest when CM and CS were co-digested with a mixing ratio of 7:3 (R-7:3). The degradation rate of organic matter (OM) at R-7:3 was the highest, and both available nitrogen (AN) and available phosphorus (AP) concentrations were at appropriate levels. The concentration of available potassium (AK) increased the most during the digestion process. In addition, the concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As) in the biogas slurry were below the detection limit. Microbial analysis reveals that Methanosarcina and Sedimentibacter were the primary bacteria responsible for methane production in the system. They are relatively abundant under R-7:3 conditions, which suggests a greater potential for the stability of the AcoD system. Therefore, an appropriate mixing ratio of CM to CS could enhance methane production and system stability, while reducing the risks associated with using biogas slurry in agriculture.

Abstract:This study aimed to enhance methane production from mixed anaerobic digestion of cow manure and corn straw by adding hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux. The hydrochar characterization revealed that it can provide attachment for microbial growth, and abundant surface functional groups (such as C-O, C--O, C-OH, and C-N) for adsorption. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) mediated by surface oxygen-containing functional groups on hydrochar increased the methane yield. The experimental group added with hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux had the highest methane and biogas production (34.40% and 36.98% higher than the control group, respectively). Results demonstrate hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux can improve microorganism species richness in anaerobic digestion systems, in which hydrochar can also improve microorganism species uniformity. Distance-based redundancy analysis showed that the VFAs, and pH had the greatest effects on the composition of the microbial community. The dominant microorganism at the phylum level in AD system were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. The addition of hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux can significantly increase the species abundance of Methanobacterium. These results indicate that the addition of hydrochar and biogas slurry reflux can improve the corresponding microbial abundance, in which hydrochar can enhance the redox char-acteristics and DIET between microorganism, biogas slurry reflux can also increase nutrient content of anaerobic digestion system, and collectively promote the methane yield.
