Abstract:The good performance and durability of alkali-activated slag (AAS) make it to be a potential alternative to ordinary Portland cement. However, the preparation of activators such as water-glass is energy-intensive. In this paper, the feasibility of using a novel activator derived from coal gasification coarse slag (CGCS) for the preparation of AAS was investigated. The CGCS-based activators were the filtrates of CGCS and NaOH compound solution at 150 degrees C with different CGCS/NaOH ratios. By comparison with water glass-activated slag and NaOHactivated slag, the hydration reaction activity, mechanical property, hydrates composition, and microstructure of the CGCS-activated slag were studied. The results indicate that the compressive strength of CGCS-activated slag reached to 55.25 MPa at 28 d, much higher than NaOH-activated slag (43.08 MPa). CGCS-activated slag also performed the similar hydration dynamic to water glass-activated slag in terms of early heat release and hydrates assemblage. The amorphous silicon from CGCS dissolved in the filtrate played a crucial role in the activation effect of CGCS-based activator, which promoted the early hydration of CGCS-activated slag and contributed to the C-(A)-S-H with longer chain length. These findings proposed the mechanism of slag activated by CGCS-based activator, and provided an eco-friendly strategy for AAS production.
Understanding the Role of Calcium Silicate Slag in Sodium Carbonate-Activated Green Materials: Influence on Kinetics, Strength, and Efflorescence

Abstract:This study assessed the impact of calcium silicate slag (CSS), an industrial by-product of aluminum extraction from fly ash, on the reaction kinetics, compressive strength, and efflorescence of one-part sodium carbonate-activated slag (SCS). Various proportions of CSS (0%, 10%, and 20%) were used to substitute for slag. The resulting performances were evaluated through chemical shrinkage, heat liberation, compressive strength, water absorption, phase composition (XRD and TG.), microstructures (BET and BSE-EDS), and simulated efflorescence test (partially and fully immersed in deionized water). The results indicate that the CSS possesses a porous structure. The addition of CSS impairs flowability but accelerates the development of chemical shrinkage and heat liberation. The incorporation of CSS promotes the transformation of gaylussite, leading to an increase in CASH and hydrotalcite formation. Consequently, a higher compressive strength and a lower water adsorption rate are achieved. 10% CSS addition improves the splitting tensile strength of SCS under conditions of partial immersion in the efflorescence test. However, a 20% CSS substitution exacerbates the formation of efflorescence products and reduces the splitting tensile strength. These observations are associated with residual alkalis in CSS, a lower Al/Si ratio of products, and an increase in capillary pores attributed to CSS particles. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using alkaline solid waste for slag substitution and performance regulation in SCS and reveals the underlying mechanism. The prepared CSS-SCS binder exhibits much lower energy consumption and CO2 emission than traditional cement-based material, as determined by life cycle assessment.

Abstract:The quest for sustainable waste management practices has catalysed the development of innovative approaches to transform waste into resourceful products. This study explores the effectiveness of cow bone waste and calcium oxide (CaO) as agents in the stabilization/solidification (S/S) process of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ash derived from two distinct cities employing both grate-type and circulating fluidized bed incinerators in China. Employing a robust experimental framework, the research evaluated the stabilization efficacy for heavy metals, monitored the progression of pH, and quantified the compressive strength of the treated MSWI fly ash. Moreover, it conducted risk assessment and economic analyses. Incorporating CBW and CaO into the MSWI fly ash from grate-type incinerators significantly enhanced the Pb stabilization efficiency, achieving up to 99.7% when adding 31% CBW and 7% CaO. This treatment resulted in the leaching of other heavy metals, which were also below the standard landfill limits. In the circulating fluidized bed incinerator fly ash, the leaching concentrations of heavy metals in the treated samples were reduced by up to 98.6% for Cd and 64.4% for Ni.Additionally, an increase in CaO content was found to substantially improve the compressive strength of the solidified samples across all tested curing periods (7, 14, and 28 days). The optimal compressive strength result, observed at 28 days, reached 1.2MPa, compared to the raw fly ash, which exhibited only 0.77MPa when adding just 9% CaO. This highlights CaO's critical role in enhancing the mechanical integrity of the treated MSWI fly ash. The study concludes that strategically calibrated ratios of cow bone waste and CaO attenuate the environmental hazard presented by MSWI fly ash and bolster its mechanical attributes, thereby repurposing the waste into a viable material for construction.

Abstract:The utilization of calcium carbide residue (CCR) to activate solid wastes can effectively promote sustainable development. This paper explores adding sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) to CCR activators to improve the early reactivity of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) made from sewage sludge ash (SSA). The research focuses on the effects of Na 2 CO 3 on setting, hardening, mechanical strength, and environmental benefits. The findings indicate that Na 2 CO 3 can shorten the paste' hardening time and significantly enhance the early mechanical properties. The introduction of Na 2 CO 3 accelerates the consumption of CCR during the early phases and facilitates the formation of C-(N)-A-S-H gels. Meanwhile, it can significantly reduce the porosity and refine the pore structure. When the dosage reaches 8%, the total intruded pore volume of the sample decreases to 0.15 mL/g. This activation method reduces energy consumption, CO 2 emissions, and costs by 69%, 50%, and over 90%, respectively, making it an efficient, eco-friendly approach to AAM production.

Abstract:Cementitious materials composed entirely of solid waste are expected to replace cement and alleviate environmental pollution problems. Due to limitations in reaction rate and strength, a composite activator comprising NaOH and water glass was employed to investigate the effect of composite activator content (0–12.0% Na2O equivalent) on pore solution pH, hydration products, microscopic morphology, and pore structure of ternary alkali-activated materials prepared by blast furnace slag, desulfurization gypsum and carbide slag. Additionally, the microstructure development results were corroborated through characterization of fluidity, setting time and compressive strength. Results indicate that the reaction process of alkali-activated material accelerates as Na2O equivalent increases from 0 to 8.0%, thereby promoting calcium aluminum silicate gel and hydrotalcite formation, and facilitating the continuous filling of pores, which leads to a dense structure formation. However, excessive gel products are generated on bonded particle surface when Na2O equivalent exceeds 8.0%, hindering polymerization process; meanwhile, the presence of microcracks leads to an increase in macropores (≥10 mm3) proportion resulting in a decrease in compressive strength. Notably, the increase in Na2O equivalent gradually suppresses ettringite formation. Life cycle assessment demonstrates that the preparation of mortar is more environmentally sustainable. Based on the optimal compressive strength, the reduction in global warming, abiotic resource depletion, acidification, and eutrophication potential of mortar compared with cement is 78.7%, 39.7%, 17.9% and 29.2%, respectively. This work contributes to further improving the resource utilization of solid waste, and extending the application of conventional solid waste cementitious materials in the domain of emergency repair engineering.

Abstract:In order to enhance the utilization of alkaline carbide slag (CS) and steel slag (SS) in solid waste-based cementitious materials (SWBCM). In this study, slag (GGBS) was utilized as the primary material, phosphogypsum (PG) as the sulfat activator, and carbide slag (CS) and steel slag (SS) as the alkali activators to prepare carbide slag-steel slag-slag-phosphogypsum composite cementitious material (CS-SS-GGBS-PG). The impact of partial SS (mass fraction) substitution by CS on the flowability, mechanical properties, softening coefficient, pore solution pH value, hydration heat, and microstructure of CS-SS-GGBS-PG was studied. The hydration products, microstructure, and pore structure of CS-SS-GGBS-PG were studied via XRD, FTIR, TG-DTG, SEM, and MIP. The results show that CS replacement with SS decreases the flowability of CS-SS-GGBS-PG compared to the specimen without CS doping (A0). The addition of CS provides an abundance of Ca 2+ and OH − to facilitate the hydration reaction in the system, prompting CS-SS-GGBS-PG to form more C-(A)-S-H gels and ettringite (AFt) in the early stages. This significantly enhances the 3 and 7 days strength of CS-SS-GGBS-PG. Compared to A0, the sample group with 5% CS substitution for SS showed a respective increase of 400% and 1,150% in flexural strength at 3 and 7 days, and an increase of 800% and 1,633% in compressive strength. However, if CS is substituted for SS in excess, the system’s late hydration process will be inhibited, increasing the volume of harmful pores in the specimen’s microstructure and lowering its degree of compactness. This leads to a decrease of 28 days of strength and a deterioration of the water resistance of CS-SS-GGBS-PG. It is advised that the blending ratio of SS to CS be 3:1 in order to maintain equilibrium between the early strength enhancement of CS-SS-GGBS-PG and the stability of strength and water resistance in the latter stage. This study has a positive impact on improving the utilization of CS and SS in SWBCM, reducing the dependence of SWBCM on traditional high-angstrom chemical alkali activators, and promoting the development of SWBCM.

Abstract:Activator is a critical component of alkali activated materials. In the present work, a by-product calcium carbide residue is used to prepare mixed alkali activators combined with sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate, and the properties of alkali activated slag (AAS) pastes versus different activators have been analyzed. The results of the investigation show that the mixed alkali activators with two sodium salts represent different characteristics but better performance compared to single sodium hydroxide. The addition of mixed activators can effectively relieve the rapid hardening and concentrated exotherm of hydration. Meanwhile, mixed activators substituting sodium hydroxide properly enhance the mechanical properties of AAS paste, and change the type and content of hydration products slightly. Further, the SEM testing result indicates that the early shrinkage and calcium-losing are overcome by using mixed alkali activators. These testing results prove the economy, environment, and practicability of mixed alkali activator developed by calcium carbide residue.

Abstract:This study utilises alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as the primary method for solidification/stabilisation, with municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash (BA) as an auxiliary precursor to assist in the solidification/stabilisation (S/S) of high-salt sludge. The results show that the alkali-activated GGBS and MSWI BA cementitious material can effectively realize the S/S of high-salt sludge. However, having early strength of the alkali-activated GGBS solidified sludge at low GGBS content is difficult. In comparison, the addition of MSWI BA enhances the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the alkali-activated GGBS solidified sludge to reach 6.35 MPa at 3d curing age, whereas the UCS of the alkali-activated GGBS solidified sludge with 20% GGBS achieves only 0.31 MPa at 14d curing age. The MSWI BA significantly improves the effect of S/S on high-salt sludge by alkali-activated GGBS, and the solidified high-salt sludge with 20% alkali-activated GGBS and MSWI BA cementitious material exhibits good water stability, the UCS of which retain 2.33 MPa after 28d water immersion. The analysis of the mineral composition, chemical bond transformation, thermal stability and microstructure of the solidified sludge samples indicates that the geopolymer cementitious material generated by alkali-activated GGBS and MSWI BA can effectively cement and wrap sludge particles and soluble salts, and reduce the strength loss of the solidified samples after water immersion. Moreover, the addition of MSWI BA accelerates the polymerization of alkali-activated GGBS, leading to rapid solidification/stabilisation of high-salt sludge in early curing age and reduction of the consumption of mineral resources. The heavy metal leaching concentration of the solidified sludge is much lower than that of the raw MSWI BA, and can satisfy the pollution control standard limit of landfill. The immobilization efficiency of the heavy metals of the solidified sludge is larger than 89%. By using MSWI BA as an auxiliary precursor in alkali-activated GGBS, the co-disposal of high-salt sludge and MSWI BA can be achieved, providing insights for realizing the energy conservation and environment protection purposes of solid waste reclamation and GGBS consumption reduction.

Abstract:The production of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) and municipal sludge (MS) has been increasing annually, raising concerns about proper disposal. In this study, a thermal treatment method with attributes of energy efficiency and complete detoxification was applied to synergistically convert MSWI-FA and MS into precursors for the synthesis of high-strength alkali-activated materials (AAMs). The impact of mass ratios of MSWI-FA and MS on the mineralogy, microstructure, and reactivity of obtained precursors were investigated. The mechanism of alkali activation was deeply studied by characterizing the evolution of reaction products. The strength development of synthesized AAMs was characterized in a one-year time scale, as well as the environmental compatibility. The results revealed that strength, with values ranging from 12.8–33.0 MPa at 3 d, 29.5–44.1 MPa at 28 d and 39.3–54.8 MPa at 365 d. Furthermore, after one year of curing, the release of Ni, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, and Ba from synthesized AAMs into both deionized water and acetic acid were far below the regulatory limits in China. All these contribute to promoting the safe disposal and effective valorization of MSWI-FA and MS.

Abstract:A new type of ecological cementitious material was developed by using various solid waste materials to prepare low-cost and low-carbon eco-friendly materials. By incorporating circulating fluidized bed fly ash (CFBFA), red mud (RM), calcium carbide slag (CS), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), the mechanical properties of the cementitious material were first studied. Then, the hydration products were characterized by XRD, TG-DTG, FT-IR, and SEM. Finally, the synergistic activation mechanism of RM and CS was elucidated by conductivity, pH measurement, and ICP ion concentration determination. The results showed that in the early stage, RM solidificated quickly, a large amount of AFt was generated by the hydration of CFBFA and GGBS mainly played a nucleation effect, the 3 days compressive strength of the paste could reach 6.0 MPa. During the hydration process, Na+ in RM was replaced by Ca2+ in CS, transforming from a stable compound state to a free state and forming a strong alkaline environment with OH-, which can accelerate the hydration reaction rate of the system. In the later stage of hydration, GGBS participated in the hydration reaction, consuming calcium hydroxide and generating C-(A)-S-H gel to fill the paste pores.

Abstract:Industrial solid waste is characterized by complex mineral phases and various components. Low-carbon cementitious materials can be prepared through precise regulation based on the material composition and properties of various industrial solid wastes. In this study, electrolytic manganese residue (EMR), carbide slag (CS), and granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS) were used as alternatives to cement to prepare multicomponent solid waste cementitious materials. The effects of the proportions of EMR and CS on the cementitious activity of GBFS and the activation mechanism of alkali and sulfur were studied. The results showed that with increasing EMR content, the strength first increased and then decreased. At a GBFS content of 20%, CS content of 2%, and EMR content of 8%, the compressive strength was highest, reaching 45.5 MPa after 28 days of curing, mainly because the OH− in CS and SO42− in EMR synergistically stimulated the active components in GBFS. Hydrated products such as ettringite and hydrated calcium silicate (C–S–H gel) were generated and interlaced with each other to improve the densification of the mortar. Overall, the proposed system provides an avenue to reduce or replace the production of cement clinker and achieve the high-value-added utilization of industrial solid waste.

Abstract:Based on economic and environmental considerations, the recycling economy of mineral waste has been found to have great potential and economic benefits worldwide, in which alkali-activated cementitious materials are one of the main developing directions. The alkali activators commonly used in alkali-activated cementitious materials are the composite activators of sodium silicate solution and solid sodium hydroxide, which not only need to deal with high viscosity and corrosive chemicals, but also need to be prepared in advance and properly stored. In this paper, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and fly ash were used as precursors, while solid sodium silicate powder was applied as the alkali activator. In addition, the precursors were mixed with the activator in advance and activated by adding water to prepare alkali-activated GGBS/fly ash cement. The influence of precursor components, the dosage of the alkali activator and the liquid–solid ratio on the working performance, mechanical strength and hydration process of alkali-activated cement was studied. The results showed that the further incorporation of GGBS accelerated the alkali activation reaction rate and improved the strength of the specimen. However, in the specimen with GGBS as the main component of the precursor, the main hydration product was C-A-S-H gel, which was different in the structural order and quantity. The compressive strength indicated that there was the best amount of activator to match it in terms of the precursor with certain components. A too high or too low amount of activator will hinder the alkali activation reaction. This study can provide some significant reference material for the use of solid alkali activators in alkali-activated cementitious materials.

Mechanism study of the effect of superplasticizers in alkali-activated materials containing sludge

Abstract:To realize the safe disposal of solid waste containing heavy metals, sewage sludge jointly with slag and metakaolin was used to prepare alkali-activated materials (AAMs), and the effect mechanism of polycarboxylate acid superplasticizer (PCE), naphthalene superplasticizer (NS) and aliphatic superplasticizer (AS) in AAMs were studied. The results showed that both the fluidity and strength of AAMs decreased with the addition of sludge. For the NaOH + Na 2 SiO 3 activated mortar specimen, the incorporation of sludge can reduce their fluidity and strength from 206 mm and 80.25 MPa to 193 mm and 42.43 MPa, respectively. However, the addition of superplasticizers into sludge-containing AAMs leads to a reduction of 3–9% of the fluidity. Interestingly, it can enhance the strength of the AAMs, especially the NS and AS, which increase the strength by approximately 25%. This is attributed to the increase of particle dispersion by superplasticizers. However, the free water released in the process is reabsorbed by the sludge, which increases the local alkali concentration and promotes the activation of the activity. The dispersed sludge particles can play the role of physical filling, making the structure denser.

Abstract:Using granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as the volcanic ash material and fly ash (FA) as the supplementary material, the study was conducted to investigate the mix proportions of an alkali-activated solid waste cementitious material under the stimulating effect of alkali activator carbide slag (CS). This type of cementitious material could serve as a substitute for a portion of cement usage, contributing to resource conservation and mitigating environmental pollution caused by solid waste. This facilitates green and sustainable development. Firstly, an analysis of three raw materials was conducted, and the mix proportions were designed with reference to the CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 system of Portland cement. Then 28 groups of specimens were prepared based on the designed mix proportions. The flowability and setting time of each group of specimens were tested. It was observed that an increase in the amount of CS and a decrease in the amount of GGBS resulted in decreased flowability and earlier setting times of the specimens. Additionally, FA exhibited a retarding effect on setting time. Compressive strength tests were conducted on these specimens, revealing that the optimal CS content ranged between 20 % and 40 %. Overall, FA had minimal impact on compressive strength, but it contributed to increased compressive strength in the specimens at later ages. Subsequently, microscopic characterization of the hydration products was performed using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The hydration products were identified as predominantly composed of calcium silicate hydrate. The quality and defects in the microstructure of gel products from various specimen formulations were compared to elucidate differences in macroscopic performance. Finally, the hydration process mechanism diagram of alkali-activated materials was presented to illustrate the stimulation and formation of gel products, primarily composed of C-S-H. This diagram revealed the principles behind the action of alkali-activated cementitious materials. The proposed design and testing methodology for the GGBS-FA-CS system in this study had certain reference significance for research in the direction of alkali-activated solid waste cementitious materials.

Utilization of Sintered Sludge Ash with Different Mechanical–Thermal Activation Parameters as a Supplementary Cementitious Material: Mechanical Properties and Life Cycle Assessment of Cement-Based Paste

Abstract:The proposal of sintered sludge cement (SSC) paste aligns with the low-carbon development goals of building materials. However, there is a lack of scientific guidance for the preparation of sintered sludge ash (SSA). Herein, this study systematically investigates the influence mechanism of mechanical–thermal activation parameters of SSA on the mechanical properties and life cycle assessment (LCA) of SSC paste, and conducts a comprehensive evaluation using a radar chart and the TOPSIS method. The results show that with the increase in calcination temperature and duration, the compressive and flexural strengths of the SSC paste are improved, especially at 600 °C and above, increasing by 57.92% and 62.52%, respectively. The longer calcination time at 1000 °C results in a decrease in its mechanical properties. The addition of SSA significantly reduces the LCA indicators of cement paste. Specifically, 30% SSA only contributes 8.1% to the global warming potential. Compared to calcination, the LCA indicators have less sensitivity to ball milling, and prolonging the time hardly increases them. Based on performance and environmental impact, the optimal SSA is obtained by calcining at 800 °C for 2 h and ball milling for 10 min. This study can provide theoretical guidance for efficient building material utilization of dredged sludge.

Abstract:The intricate composition of wastewater impedes the recycling of agricultural and industrial effluents. This study aims to investigate the potential of sisal leaf wastewater (SLW), both water-treated (WTSLW) and alkali-treated (ATSLW), as a substitute for the alkali activator (NaOH solution) in the production of slag-powder- and fly-ash-based composites, with a focus on the effects of WTSLW substitution ratios and sisal leaf soaking durations. Initially, the fresh properties were assessed including electrical conductivity and fluidity. A further analysis was conducted on the influence of both WTSLW and ATSLW on drying shrinkage, density, and mechanical strength, including flexural and compressive measures. Microstructural features were characterized using SEM and CT imaging, while XRD patterns and FTIR spectra were employed to dissect the influence of WTSLW substitution on the composite's products. The results show that incorporating 14 wt% WTSLW into the composite enhances 90-day flexural and compressive strengths by 34.8% and 13.2%, respectively, while WTSLW curtails drying shrinkage. Conversely, ATSLW increases porosity and decreases density. Organic constituents in both WTSLW and ATSLW encapsulated in the alkaline matrix fail to modify the composites' chemical composition. These outcomes underscore the potential for sustainable construction materials through the integrated recycling of plant wastewater and solid by-products.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) is a hazardous waste with high alkalinity and is rich in heavy metals (HMs) and chlorine. To facilitate resource disposal, this paper proposes recycle MSWIFA as an alkali activator to develop low-carbon and cement-free alkali-activated materials. The designed MSWIF-Aactivated slag exhibited impressive compressive strength (>70 MPa). The microstructure of the MSWIF-Aactivated slags was tightly filled with various reaction products, including ettringite, calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H), and Friedel's salt. The leaching behaviors of the HMs and chlorine were significantly restricted owing to the chemical fixation of the reaction products and the dense microstructure of the MSWIF-Aactivated slags. The immobilization of chlorine primarily depended on the formation of Friedel's salt, and the remaining chlorine could be captured by the positively charged sites of C-A-S-H. The reaction mechanism of the designed MSWIFA-activated slags could be divided into three stages: ettringite precipitation, C-A-S-H formation, and Friedel's salt generation. This paper provides constructive insights into the resource utilization of hazardous waste and contributes to the development of low-carbon alkali-activated materials.

Abstract:To address climate change and promote sustainable development in the building materials industry, this study aimed to develop eco-friendly geopolymer products to replace the high carbon footprint cement industry. The study evaluated the production of geopolymer by partially substituting slag with sewage sludge ash (SSA) and testing different alkaline activator ratios. The ratio of GGBS to SSA was 70:20% by weight, and Na 2 SiO 3 and NaOH were the utilized activators with varying percentages by weight. The geopolymer pastes were cured by using a thermal bath with a temperature of 38°C at 100% relative humidity in a controlled humidity chamber for 3 months. The chemical composition, the mechanical strength at specific testing times, and the microstructure of the materials and the pastes have been analyzed through XRD, XRF, FTIR and SEM. The valuable results have been achieved at a ratio of (10:10%) Na 2 SiO 3 to NaOH, with a strength of 285.6 kg/cm 2 at 90 days. XRD and FTIR of the mix A1 showed the formation of amorphous phases of geopolymer gel. Also, a dense microstructure was observed in the SEM micrograph of the mix A1. Consequently, the study results demonstrated that sewage sludge ash can be reused as a value-added product through the potential use in the synthesis of geopolymer products with an optimum alkaline activator of (10:10%) sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide. SSA – geopolymer products will help in the reduction of the carbon footprint and maintain the natural resources in addition to the achievement of climate goals.
Properties, Microstructure Development and Life Cycle Assessment of Alkali-Activated Materials Containing Steel Slag under Different Alkali Equivalents

Abstract:To improve solid waste resource utilization and environmental sustainability, an alkali-activated material (AAM) was prepared using steel slag (SS), fly ash, blast furnace slag and alkali activators in this work. The evolutions of SS content (10–50%) and alkali equivalent (4.0–8.0%) on workability, mechanical strength and environmental indicators of the AAM were investigated. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques were adopted to characterize micromorphology, reaction products and pore structure, and the reaction mechanism was summarized. Results showed that the paste fluidity and setting time gradually increased with the increase in SS content. The highest compressive strength was obtained for the paste at 8.0% alkali equivalent due to the improved reaction rate and process, but it also increased the risk of cracking. However, SS was able to exert a microaggregate filling effect, where SS particles filling the pores increased the structural compactness and hindered crack development. Based on the optimal compressive strength, global warming, abiotic resource depletion, acidification and eutrophication potential of the paste are reduced by 76.7%, 53.0%, 51.6%, and 48.9%, respectively, compared with cement. This work is beneficial to further improve the utilization of solid waste resources and expand the application of environmentally friendly AAMs in the field of construction engineering.

Abstract:<p>The proper treatment on hazardous municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) is important. The application of alkali-activation technology to prepare alkali-activated MSWIFA (AAFA) material provides a potential not only to immobilise the heavy metals, but also to trigger its pozzolanic property in manufacturing building material. In this study, in addition to investigate the feasibility of alkaline activation technology in preparing AAFA with sodium silicate activator, the effect of metakaolin in AAFA (AAFM) was also explored to enhance its performance. The results showed that, compared to the AAFA, blending 10 % metakaolin in AAFA significantly improved both 28-day and 90-days compressive strengths, which was almost 200 % higher than that of AAFA. The compressive strength was increased with increasing the dosage of sodium silicate. The C-S-H gel was observed as the main hydration product of AAFA and AAFM. Moreover, the ettringite was observed in AAFM due to the reaction between the CaSO<sub>4</sub> in MSWIFA and aluminate phase from metakaolin. Finally, the 28 and 210-day leaching behaviours of AAFM on Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni were successfully suppressed to less than 1 % of that originally from MSWIFA, which can meet the requirement from Chinese standards.</p>
