Abstract:Wet scrubbing is an effective nitric oxide (NO) emission control technology for marine diesel engines. Sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) can efficiently oxidize NO and promote the absorption of NO. The activation of Na2S2O8 could enhance the mass transfer process of NO. However, the reaction kinetic mechanism of this method remains unclear, which was investigated through a bubble column reactor in this paper. The effects of several parameters on the NO absorption rate were tested with the gas flow rate of 0.8 L/min and the absorber volume of 1.0 L at 1 atm. It was found that the NO absorption rate was promoted gradually with the increase of the Na2S2O8 concentration (0.01–0.15 mol/L), NO inlet concentration (400–1200 ppm), and temperature (303–343 K). The NO absorption rate increased by 137.00% and then decreased by 1.05% as the pH value increased from 7 to 10 and then rose to 12, while the pH in the acidic solution had little effect on the nitric oxide absorption rate. In addition, during the oxidation of NO, the activation of Na2S2O8 could generate sulfate radicals ( SO 4 · − ) and hydroxyl radicals (OH·), which would significantly increase the NO absorption rate due to the strong oxidizing nature of free radicals. Simulation results showed that the absorption process is a pseudo-0.6-order for NO and a pseudo-0.15-order for Na2S2O8. The mass transfer process, especially the gas phase mass transfer, was the main rate-determining step for the NO absorption and the location of the reaction was the liquid film. Moreover, the established NO absorption model is in good agreement with the experimental results. It illustrated that the Na2S2O8/seawater system shows great application potential in marine exhaust gas purification.

Abstract:The nitrite accumulation in handling nitrate and sulfide-laden wastewater in a continuous-flow upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was studied. At sulfide/nitrate-nitrogen ratio of 1:0.76 and loading rates of 1.2kg-Sm-3d-1 and 0.4kg-Nm-3d-1, the elemental sulfur and nitrite accumulation rates peaked at 90% and 70%, respectively, with Acrobacter, Azoarcus and Thauera presenting the functional strains in the studied reactor. The accumulated nitrite was proposed a promising feedstock for anaerobic ammonia oxidation process. An integrated partial autotrophic denitrification-anaerobic ammonia oxidation-aeration process for handling the ammonia and sulfide-laden wastewaters is proposed for further studies.

Abstract:A system combining gas-phase oxidation and liquid-phase collision absorption for removing NO from marine diesel engine exhaust was proposed. This method was the first to utilize different physical states of the same mixed solution to achieve both pre-oxidation and impingement reduction absorption of exhaust gases. During the pre-oxidation stage, a mixture of (NH4)2S2O8 and urea solution was atomized into a spray using an ultrasonic nebulizer to increase the contact area between the oxidant and the exhaust gas, thereby efficiently pre-oxidizing the exhaust gas in the gas phase. In the liquid-phase absorption stage, the (NH4)2S2O8 and urea solution was used in an impingement absorption process, which not only enhanced gas–liquid mass transfer efficiency but also effectively inhibited the formation of nitrates. Experimental results showed that, without increasing the amount of absorbent used, the maximum NO removal efficiency of this method reached 97% (temperature, 343 K; (NH4)2S2O8 concentration, 0.1 mol/L; urea concentration, 1.5 mol/L; NO concentration, 1000 ppm; pH, 7; impinging stream velocity, 15 m/s), compared to 72% using the conventional liquid-phase oxidation absorption method. Additionally, this method required only the addition of a nebulizer and two opposing nozzles to the existing desulfurization tower to achieve simultaneous removal of sulfur and nitrogen oxides from the exhaust gas, with low retrofitting costs making it favorable for practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Experiments on DeNOx were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling reactor with NaClO as the oxidant and sorbent.We studied the main factors influencing NO conversion efficiency,and propose a reaction mechanism of simultaneous removal of NO and SO2 by NaClO.The results indicated that initial pH was a significant factor in the denitrification process.The NO conversion efficiency was improved by increasing the NaClO concentration and the inlet NO concentration,while high solution temperature was not beneficial for the removal of NO.At pH 5.5,NaClO was an excellent scrubbing medium for the absorption of NO.The best absorption efficiency among the individual DeNOx experiments was 43.24%.The results of the combined DeSOx/DeNOx experiments showed that SO2 could improve the absorption of NO2,and the best DeNOx and DeSOx efficiencies reached 53.03% and 100%,respectively.Thus,NaClO could be an excellent oxidant and sorbent for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO.

Abstract:Marine diesel engines produce exhaust gas including a lot of SO2 and NOx. This paper proposes a process that is capable of removing NOx and SO2 simultaneously; this process utilizes ozone oxidation and an alkaline countercurrent packed scrubber. Ozone decomposition, oxidation properties of NOx, and removal efficiency of NOx and SO2 were investigated, and the optimal factors were established. The reaction mechanism and products for simultaneous desulfurization and denitration were deduced. Results show that the ozone decomposition rate depends on exhaust gas temperature and initial concentration of ozone. Oxidation efficiency of NOx decreases as temperature rose and initial concentration of ozone reduced. The presence of SO2 has little influence on NO conversion process. CO(NH2)2 is the best reducing additive to reduce the consumption of ozone. Abstract:Wet flue gas desulfurization scrubbers can be retrofitted for combined removal of SO 2 and NO x from flue gas by adding a newly developed iron(II) thiochelate to limestone slurries. This additive enhances the solubility of NO in limestone slurries by binding NO to form iron nitrosyl thiochelates. The bound NO is then converted to an ammonium ion by iron metal, regenerating the active iron(II) catalyst for continued NO capture. The conditions of the chemical regeneration of iron(II) thiochelate have been studied. This chemical reduction method is efficient, simple, and cost-effective. Integrated tests of this new iron additive on a bench-scale system have been conducted. A turbulent contact absorber was employed to test simultaneous removal of NO and SO 2 with iron(II) thiochelate in a limestone slurry. The steady-state NO removal efficiency depends on the operating conditions of an absorber, the iron chelate concentration, the fraction of the flow diverted for regeneration, and the conditions used in the regeneration reactor. The bench-scale test results were used to develop a prediction of the performance of a full-scale spray absorber.
Influence of COD/sulfate ratios on the integrated reactor system for simultaneous removal of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen.

Abstract:An integrated reactor system was developed for the simultaneous removal of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen from sulfate-laden wastewater and for elemental sulfur (S-0) reclamation. The system mainly consisted of an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) for sulfate reduction and organic carbon removal (SR-CR), an EGSB for denitrifying sulfide removal (DSR), a biological aerated filter for nitrification and a sedimentation tank for sulfur reclamation. This work investigated the influence of chemical oxygen demand (COD)/sulfate ratios on the performance of the system. Influent sulfate and ammonium were fixed to the level of 600 mg SO42- L-1 and 120 mg NH4+ L-1, respectively. Lactate was introduced to generate COD/SO42- = 0.5:1, 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1, 3.5:1 and 4:1. The experimental results indicated that sulfate could be efficiently reduced in the SR-CR unit when the COD/SO42- ratio was between 1:1 and 3:1, and sulfate reduction was inhibited by the growth of methanogenic bacteria when the COD/SO42- ratio was between 3.5:1 and 4:1. Meanwhile, the Org-C/S2-/NO3- ratios affected the S-0 reclamation efficiency in the DSR unit. When the influent COD/SO42- ratio was between 1:1 and 3:1, appropriate Org-C/S2-/NO3- ratios could be achieved to obtain a maximum S-0 recovery in the DSR unit. For the microbial community of the SR-CR unit at different COD/SO42- ratios, 16S rRNA gene-based high throughput Illumina MiSeq sequencing was used to analyze the diversity and potential function of the dominant species.

Abstract:An iron(II) thiochelate has been developed for use as an additive in a wet flue gas scrubber for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx from flue gas. The additive enhances the solubility of NO in scrubbing liquor by binding NO to form an iron nitrosyl thiochelate. The effect of oxygen on NO absorption in iron(II) thiochelate aqueous solutions, as well as in iron(II)(EDTA) solutions, has been studied. The results showed that the iron(II) thiochelate is more resistant to oxidation by oxygen than the conventional iron(II)(EDTA) additive. Parametric studies of the absorption efficiency of NO were performed in a bench-scale Turbulent Contact Absorber (TCR). Based on the bench-scale test results, a prediction of the performance of a full-scale spray absorber has been made.

Abstract:Marine engine exhaust emissions are increasingly harmful to the natural environment and human health and must be controlled. A self-synthesized amide (BAD, C12H25NO) in the laboratory shows a strong absorption capacity of nitric acid and nitrous acid, which may solve the problem that only using chlorine-based oxidant as an absorbent cannot completely absorb or retain NO2 produced by NO oxidation in previous studies. Based on Multiwfn and VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics) program calculation, the formation mechanism of hydrogen bonds between BAD with nitric acid and nitrous acid was revealed by electrostatic potential (ESP) analysis and further confirmed by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) spectra research. Subsequently, simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOX from simulated flue gas was carried out by using NaClO/BAD as a two-phase composite absorbent, and the maximum removal efficiencies of SO2 and NOX were 98.9% and 86.6%, respectively. The recycling experiments and the engineering experiments showing that NaClO/BAD can solve the problem of absorption of NO2, and it can be a promising composite absorbent in wet desulfurization and denitrification of marine engine exhaust gas in practical applications.

Abstract:In this work, steel slag slurry was used in combination with O3 oxidation for the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO x in a laboratory-scale wet flue gas desulfurization process. The effects of the oxidation temperature, steel slag concentration, initial SO2 concentration, and pH value on the desulfurization and denitrification efficiencies were studied. The results showed that the highest NO x removal efficiency occurred at an oxidation temperature of 90 °C. With an increase of the oxidation temperature above 90 °C, the denitrification efficiency decreased due to the decomposition of N2O5. The effect of the SO2 concentration on denitrification was complicated. When the concentration of SO2 was 500 ppm, generation of SO3 2- promoted the absorption of NO2. However, higher SO2 concentrations strengthened the competitive absorption of SO2 and NO x . In the pH range of 8.5-4.5, the denitrification efficiency was maintained at about 96%. The component analyses of the aqueous solution and the solid residue were conducted to investigate the compositions of the absorption products. The results showed that NO3 - and SO4 2- were the major anions in the aqueous solution. The nitrogen balance was analyzed to be 95.8%, clearly illustrating the migration and transformation path of nitrogen. In the solid residue, most alkaline substances were consumed, and the final products were mainly CaSO4 and FeO. Accordingly, the reaction mechanism of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification using steel slag combined with ozone oxidation was proposed.

Abstract:SO2 and NO emitted from marine ships have seriously polluted the regional environment. However, there is a lack of high-efficiency, small-size, and cost-effective technology with which these pollutants could be purified. Here, a gas cyclone-liquid jet absorption separator (GLAS) combined with NaClO solution was developed to remove SO2 and NO simultaneously. The high-speed gas that rotates in the GLAS forms a high-gravity field and vortex flow, and SO2 and NO were removed efficiently in a small GLAS. The effect of key operating parameters was well studied through the experiment, and the total mass transfer coefficient (K(G)a) was calculated. It was found that the removal efficiency increased with the absorbent flow rate and concentration, while it decreased with the gas flow rate and the initial SO2 and NO concentrations. Under the experimental conditions, the maximum removal efficiency for SO2 and NO was 99% and 93%, and the maximum K(G)a was 0.0559 and 0.0357 kmol.m(-3).kPa(-1).s(-1), respectively, which were 10 times higher than that of traditional devices. Semiempirical equations were also developed to predict the mass transfer performance of desulfurization and denitrification by GLAS. The study indicates that GLAS combined with NaClO solution has great potential applications for marine ships.

Abstract:To understand the absorption mechanism of nitrogen dioxide into a sodium sulfide solution, a stirred tank reactor with a plane gas-liquid interface was used to measure the chemical absorption rate of diluted nitrogen dioxide into sodium sulfide solution. The absorption rates under various experimental conditions were measured and the effects of experimental conditions on nitrogen dioxide absorption rate were discussed. The results show that, in the range of this study, nitrogen dioxide absorption rate increases with increasing sodium sulfide concentration, nitrogen dioxide inlet concentration, and flue gas flow rate, but decreases with increasing reaction temperature and oxygen content in flue gas.

Abstract:A group of individuals who had granted or refused permission to have organs removed from a decreased relative for transplantation were interviewed. Organ donation was found to be a very delicate subject: the request for organ donation often comes unexpectedly and most relatives are not aware of the wishes of the decreased (donor codicil), which complicates the decision process. Some of the relatives who refused regretted their decision later. Remorse was also encountered in the group who gave their permission, although positive feelings were more common. The position of the member of staff who asks for permission is complicated. Suggestions are presented to improve the procedure.

Abstract:In the process of flue gas desulfurization and denitrification, the generation of high-sulfate wastewater containing nitrogen is a significant challenge for biological wastewater treatment. In this study, halophilic activated sludge was inoculated in a Sequencing Batch Reactor to remove nitrogen from wastewater with a high sulfate concentration (60 g/L). With the influent concentration of 180 mg/L, the removal rate of total nitrogen was more than 96.7%. The effluent ammonium nitrogen concentration was lower than 1.94 mg/L, and the effluent nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen concentrations were even lower than 0.77 mg/L. The salt tolerance of activated sludge is mainly related to the increase in the content of ectoine in microbial cells. The Specific Nitrite Oxidation Rate is quite low, while the Specific Nitrite Reduction Rate and Specific Nitrate Reduction Rate are relatively strong. In the system, there are various nitrogen metabolic processes, including aerobic nitrification, anaerobic denitrification, and simultaneous nitrification–denitrification processes. By analyzing the nitrogen metabolic mechanisms and microbial community structure of the reaction system, dominate bacteria can be identified, such as Azoarcus, Thauera, and Halomonas, which have significant nitrogen removal capabilities.

Abstract:Highlights • We systematically investigated the influence law of the absorption solution c(Fe 2+ ):c(CySH) ratio, Fe 2+ and CySH complexation time, Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 solution concentration, initial temperature, initial pH, NO inlet concentration, and O 2 concentration on the denitrification efficiency and derived the optimum operating conditions, which helps the study of the operating parameters to be optimization and provide data support for industrial application. • We calculated the concentration of Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 from the angle of NO absorption capacity according to the complexation ratio of NO and Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 of 1:1, which confirmed the regeneration of Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 and laid a certain foundation for future research. • The system is confirmed to be an efficient and stable denitrification system by continuous experiments. Wet denitrification technology has been extensively researched for its benefits in synergistically treating pollutants. As a representative complexing agent, ferrous cysteine (Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 ) solution in the complex absorption method has attracted the attention of researchers. In this study, the influence of c(Fe 2+ ):c(CySH) ratio, complexation time, initial pH value, and temperature on the NO removal efficiency and reaction process of Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 in a bubbling reactor were investigated. The results highlighted the significance of the initial pH of the Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 solution in denitrification efficiency, with higher pH leading to improved NO removal. The denitrification efficiency showed a volcano-like variation with increasing temperature and was not much affected by NO inlet concentration and Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 solution complexation time. Under optimal conditions, the denitrification efficiency remained above 80% for 3 h of continuous reaction, peaking at 98.4%. Calculations of NO absorption capacity indicated the regeneration of Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 solutions. Testing with iodometric and bromine-ferrous titration methods revealed that the reaction product of cysteine is cystine, maintaining material balance before and after the reaction. Experimental results validate Fe 2+ (CyS) 2 as an effective and stable denitrification method, laying the foundation for potential industrial application. Abstract:To date, there is a lack of systematic investigation on the elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SDAD) process for removing nitrate (NO 3 − -N) from mariculture wastewater deficient in organic carbon sources. Therefore, a packed-bed reactor was established and continuously operated for 230 days to investigate the operation performance, kinetic characteristics and microbial community of SDAD biofilm process. Results indicate that the NO 3 − -N removal efficiencies and rates varied with the operational conditions including HRT (1–4 h), influent concentrations of NO 3 − -N (25–100 mg L −1 ) and DO (0.2–7.0 mg L −1 ), and temperature (10 o C–30 °C), in the ranges of 51.4%–98.6% and 0.054–0.546 g L −1 d −1 , respectively. Limestone could partially neutralize the produced acidity. Small portions of NO 3 − -N were converted to nitrite (<4.5%) and ammonia (<2.8%) in the reactor. Operational conditions also influenced the production of acidity, nitrite and ammonia as well as sulfate. Shortening HRT and increasing influent NO 3 − -N concentration turned the optimal fitting model depicting the NO 3 − -N removal along the reactor from half-order to zero-order. Furthermore, the NO 3 − -N removal was accelerated by a higher temperature and influent NO 3 − -N concentration and a lower HRT and influent DO concentration. Microbial richness, evenness and diversity gradually decreased during the autotrophic denitrifier enrichment cultivation and the reactor start-up and operation. Sulfurimonas constituted the predominate genus and the primary functional bacteria in the reactor. This study highlights the SDAD as a promising way to control the coastal eutrophication associated with mariculture wastewater discharge.

Abstract:An experimental investigation of operational parameters, including liquid/gas ratio (L/G), inlet nitric oxide (NO) concentration, reaction temperature, and pH value of absorbing agent, on NO removal efficiency with hexamminecobalt(II) solution scrubbing was conducted on a pilot-scale facility to search optimal operation conditions. The experimental results show that NO removal efficiency increased with the pH value of hexamminecobalt solution, while the improving rate dropped gradually. When the reaction temperature increased, the NO removal efficiency increased first and then decreased. At the same time, NO removal efficiency increased with the increasing of L/G and hexamminecobalt concentration, while the removal efficiency did not change much at low NO concentration. The pH of 10.4 and L/G of 16 L/m(3) were close to the optimal operation conditions, and the scrubbing temperature fell within a reasonable operation temperature. The experimental results can be used as a reference for the design and operation of scaled-up industrial devices.
An improved Wellman-Lord process for simultaneously recovering SO2 and removing NOX from non-ferrous metal smelting flue gas

Abstract:An improved Wellman-Lord process is developed with electrochemical reactor, which can effectively recycle and reuse SO2 and NOX from flue gas. The process features to (a) remove and recycle NOX while recovering SO2 with the process of electrochemical denitrification; and (b) solve the problem of pipeline blockage caused by oxidation by-products with ammonium- wet absorption method. The crystallization temperature of the absorption solution reduces more than 50.0% after NH4+ is gradually added to Na2SO3. More than nearly 75.0% of (NH4)2SO4 added can ensure that it does not crystallize under the same conditions. The crystallization temperature decreases 44.16% and 54.69% with the absence of SO32− (solute of 20% wt) and HSO3− (solute of 28% wt), respectively, when the interference concentration reaches 80%. The absorption efficiencies of 5% Na2SO3 and 5% (NH4)2SO3 reach 98.18% and 98.47% for SO2 and 98.38% and 93.44% for NO2, respectively. Co3O4/Ti cathode exhibits nitrate removal efficiency of 93.67% and ammonia generation efficiency of 85.56%. The concentration of nitrate-N reduces 86.30% and ammonia-N increases 71.40% when the reaction proceeds for 11 h with intermittent injection conditions. The effect of pH on nitrogen removal with the presence of ammonium is also studied.

Obviously, the reaction continues during centrifugation, and this activity has apparently cancelled out the reduced activity obtained while the reaction mixture was achieving the reaction temperature. However, it does conclusively indicate that the enzyme activity is associated with the insoluble substrate, not the supernatant, and continuous shaking cannot be expected to change the results.
