Abstract:The co-removal of CO2 while removing SO2 and NOx from industrial flue gas has great potential of carbon emission reduction but related research is lacking. In this study, a wet scrubbing process with various urea solutions for desulfurization and denitrification was explored for the possibility of CO2 absorption. The results showed that the urea-additive solutions were efficient for NOx and SO2 abatement, but delivered < 10% CO2 absorption efficiency. The addition of Ca(OH)2 dramatically enhanced the CO2 absorption, remained the desulfurization efficiency, unfortunately restricted the denitrification efficiency. Among various operating parameters, pH of solution played a determining role during the absorption. The contradictory pH demands of CO2 absorption and denitrification were observed and discussed in detail. A higher pH of solution than 10 was favorable for CO2 absorption, while the oxidizing of NO to NO2, NO2- or NO3- by NaClO2 was inhibited in this condition. When 7 < pH < 10, it was favorable for the conversion and absorption of NO and NOx. However, the conversion of HCO3- to CO32- was significantly inhibited, hence preventing the absorption of CO2. Large part of Ca(OH)2 became CaCO3 with a finer particle size, which covered the unreacted Ca(OH)2 surface after the reaction. Kinetic analysis showed that the CO2 absorption in urea-NaClO2-Ca(OH)2 absorbent was controlled by chemical reaction in early stage, then by ash layer diffusion in later stage.

Abstract:This study develops a novel method for simultaneously removing NOx and SO2 from coal-fired flue gas via coupling yellow phosphorus emulsion with red mud. The effects of different factors on the synergistic purification of sulphur-nitric acid were investigated in this study. The achieved removal efficiencies of NOx and SO2 were as high as 97.9% and 100%, respectively, under optimized conditions. This indicates that the yellow phosphorus emulsion coupled with red mud as a composite absorbent is favorable for simultaneous removal effect on NOx and SO2. The samples before and after the reaction were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Xray fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma, scanning electron microscopy, and other methods, and the main product was identified as gypsum (CaSO42H2O) after desulfurization and denitrification. Adsorption kinetics, isotherm adsorption, and breakthrough curve models of NOx and SO2 adsorption on red mud were established. Moreover, the mechanism of multiphase oxidation and absorption reactions for simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification was also speculated.

Abstract:Secondary problems, such as the occurrence of side reactions and the accumulation of by-products, are a major challenge in the application of wet denitrification technology through urea solution. We revealed the formation mechanism of urea nitrate and clarified the main and side reaction paths and key intermediates of denitrification. Urea nitrate would be separated from urea absorption solution only when the concentration product of [urea], [H+] and [NO3−] was greater than 0.87~1.22 mol3/L3. The effects of the urea concentration (5–20%) and reaction temperature (30–70 °C) on the denitrification efficiency could be ignored. Improving the oxidation degree of the flue gas promoted the removal of nitrogen oxides. The alkaline condition was beneficial to the dissolution process, while the acidic condition was beneficial to the reaction process. As a whole, the alkaline condition was the preferred process parameter. The research results could guide the optimization of process conditions in theory, improve the operation efficiency of the denitrification reactor and avoid the occurrence of side reactions.

Abstract:Experiments on simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification were conducted with KMnO4/CaCO3 in a jet bubbling reactor.The influence of oxidizer concentration,SO2 concentration,NO concentration,slurry pH value,immersion depth,slurry concentration,flue gas temperature on removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were examined.Experimental results show that the NO removal efficiency increases with the increase in oxidizer concentration,SO2 concentration,immersion depth and slurry concentration,and it decreases with the increase in NO concentration.The SO2 removal efficiency can be raised by increasing the oxidizer concentration,SO2 concentration,pH value and slurry concentration,and the NO concentration and flue gas temperature have no effect on the SO2 removal efficiency.There is no obvious relationship between the NO removal efficiency and the pH value and the slurry temperature.

Abstract:Systematic comparative experiments on simultaneous flue gas desulfurization and denitrification were conducted with CaCO3 as the sorbent and with NaClO2 and KMnO4 as oxidants.The influences of different experimental conditions on the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were examined.Experimental results show that NaClO2 gives better desulfurization and denitrification results than KMnO4 under the same conditions.Lower pH is beneficial to denitrification oxidized with NaClO2,but it has no significant impact on denitrification with KMnO4.NO removal efficiency can be improved by increasing SO2 concentration or decreasing NO concentration,more notably for the oxidant NaClO2 than KMnO4.Increasing the feeding amount of oxidant or the depth of jet tubes immersed into the sorbent results in a rise in the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO.

Abstract:The interactions between the desulphurization and denitrification reactions were studied to improve the simultaneous removal of SO2 by calcium-based sorbent and NOx by NH3 injection.The effects of NO in the flue gas and the injected NH3 on the CaO desulphurization reaction and of the catalytic activity of the sulfated CaO on the SCR reaction in the presence of SO2,CO2 and H2O were investigated at 700~850 ℃ in a fixed-bed reactor.The results indicate that NO has no obvious effect on the CaO desulphurization,NH3 slightly reduces the desulphurization reaction rate only when CO2 and H2O also exist in the gas for temperatures of 700~750 ℃ and SO2 suppresses the catalytic activity of sulfated CaO but the effect is reversible and can be reduced by H2O.Generally,the sulfated CaO exhibited strong catalytic activity in the SCR reaction in the simulated flue gas.The experimental results also confirm the catalytic activity of sulfated CaO for the deNOx reaction in the presence of SO2,CO2 and H2O.

Abstract:The effect of Mn powder addition on the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO coupled with FeII(EDTA) absorption was investigated in this work. In the NO absorption system with FeII(EDTA), SO2 reduced FeII(EDTA)-NO to FeII(EDTA) with a reduction efficiency reaching 88.5% under the conditions of 4000 mg/m3 SO2, pH 8.0, 44 °C, and the flow rate of 1.2 L/min within 60 min. Introducing 0.1 M Mn powder with SO2 increased the FeII(EDTA)-NO reduction efficiency to 96.8% within 5 min. SO2 was also removed by reducing FeII(EDTA)-NO and converted into SO42- at a removal efficiency of 100%. After adding Mn powder, NO was removed through the following reaction: $$ 5\mathrm{Mn}+2{\mathrm{Fe}}^{\mathrm{II}}\left(\mathrm{EDTA}\right)-\mathrm{NO}+12{\mathrm{H}}^{+}\longrightarrow 2{\mathrm{Fe}}^{\mathrm{II}}\left(\mathrm{EDTA}\right)+5{\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}+2{\mathrm{NH}}_4^{+}+2{\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O} $$ . Mn powder functioned as a reductant to regenerate the absorption of solution, and the coordinated NO in FeII(EDTA)-NO was reduced to NH4+. The resource utilization rate of N reached approximately 77.2%. The integrated technology is a potential solution for flue gas treatment in industrial sectors with coal-fired power plants and industrial boiler.
Removal of SO2 and NOx from flue gas using mud-phosphorus slurry

Abstract:In this study, the mud-phosphorus slurry was used to simultaneously remove SO2 and NOx. The technology proposed new avenues for the purification and utilization of remove SO2 and NOx in flue gas. The effects of reaction temperature, solid-liquid ratio, and oxygen content on the efficiency of desulfurization and denitrification were studied experimentally. Results show that the parameters were solid-liquid ratio of 5.0 g/40 mL, T = 60 °C, φ (O2) = 20%, Q = 300 mL/min under the best experimental conditions. The maximum amount of ozone generated was 563.8 mg/m3. The reaction time with desulfurization rate ≥ 99% was 340 min; the reaction time with denitrification rate ≥ 99% was 160 min. Response surface analysis method was used to perform a three-factor three-level response surface experiment. Results show that the oxygen content had a highly significant effect on the desulfurization and denitrification efficiency, and the relationship between the desulfurization and denitrification efficiency was oxygen content > mud-phosphorus slurry liquid-solid ratio > reaction temperature. The process is simple, the solid waste is used to treat the flue gas, and the removal effect is good, which is convenient for popularization.
Simultaneous Removal of SO2 and NO x Using Steel Slag Slurry Combined with Ozone Oxidation

Abstract:In this work, steel slag slurry was used in combination with O3 oxidation for the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO x in a laboratory-scale wet flue gas desulfurization process. The effects of the oxidation temperature, steel slag concentration, initial SO2 concentration, and pH value on the desulfurization and denitrification efficiencies were studied. The results showed that the highest NO x removal efficiency occurred at an oxidation temperature of 90 °C. With an increase of the oxidation temperature above 90 °C, the denitrification efficiency decreased due to the decomposition of N2O5. The effect of the SO2 concentration on denitrification was complicated. When the concentration of SO2 was 500 ppm, generation of SO3 2- promoted the absorption of NO2. However, higher SO2 concentrations strengthened the competitive absorption of SO2 and NO x . In the pH range of 8.5-4.5, the denitrification efficiency was maintained at about 96%. The component analyses of the aqueous solution and the solid residue were conducted to investigate the compositions of the absorption products. The results showed that NO3 - and SO4 2- were the major anions in the aqueous solution. The nitrogen balance was analyzed to be 95.8%, clearly illustrating the migration and transformation path of nitrogen. In the solid residue, most alkaline substances were consumed, and the final products were mainly CaSO4 and FeO. Accordingly, the reaction mechanism of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification using steel slag combined with ozone oxidation was proposed.
Removal of NO and SO_2 from Flue Gas by Wet Scrubbing Using Aqueous NaClO Solution

Abstract:Experiments on DeNOx were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling reactor with NaClO as the oxidant and sorbent.We studied the main factors influencing NO conversion efficiency,and propose a reaction mechanism of simultaneous removal of NO and SO2 by NaClO.The results indicated that initial pH was a significant factor in the denitrification process.The NO conversion efficiency was improved by increasing the NaClO concentration and the inlet NO concentration,while high solution temperature was not beneficial for the removal of NO.At pH 5.5,NaClO was an excellent scrubbing medium for the absorption of NO.The best absorption efficiency among the individual DeNOx experiments was 43.24%.The results of the combined DeSOx/DeNOx experiments showed that SO2 could improve the absorption of NO2,and the best DeNOx and DeSOx efficiencies reached 53.03% and 100%,respectively.Thus,NaClO could be an excellent oxidant and sorbent for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO.
A Superior Liquid Phase Catalyst for Enhanced Absorption of NO2 Together with SO2 after Low Temperature Ozone Oxidation for Flue Gas Treatment

Abstract:NOx and SO2 are the main air pollutants emitted from the coal-fired combustors. Since the typical combination of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and we flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) is not suitable for some of industrial flue gas treatment due to their unsuitable temperature window and limited retrofitting space, new technologies must be developed. This paper proposes an effective we method for simultaneous removal of NOx and SO2. The insoluble NO was first oxidized into NO2 by ozone, and then NO2 together with SO2 were both absorbed in one we wash tower. To further improve NO2 removal efficiency, a new kind of additive was proposed and tested. Effects of various influence factors, such as additive concentration, residence time in the wash tower, liquid/gas ratios, initial NO/SO2/O-2 concentration and slurry pH value, were carefully evaluated in a home-designed experimental platform. Results indicated that the NOx removal efficiency was positively correlated with the increasing the additive concentration, while the maximum denitration and desulfurization efficiency were more than 95% and 86%. The NOx removal efficiency was enhanced with the increasing residence time and liquid/gas ratios. The alkaline environment was verified to be beneficial for the simultaneous absorption process. The exiting O-2 in flue gas would not consume additives, and the denitration and desulfurization efficiency were insensitive to the initial NO and SO 2 concentration as well. Only 2% decrease of the denitration efficiency was observed after 300 mins stability test, while the desulfurization efficiency kept > 98%. With the characterizations of Ion Chromatograph (IC), NO2-, NO3- and SO42- were detected as the main absorption by-products anions, whereas NO2- accumulation would inhibit the overall NOx removal. Finally, the mechanism of simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO using the novel liquid phase catalyst was proposed and discussed.
Experimental on simultaneous denitrification process of moderate temperature dry desulfurization system

Abstract:The simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technology has been extensively studied for the advantages of low investment and compact structure.For the purpose of the foundation research of the mid-temperature multi-pollutant removal technology,the denitrification performance of the moderate temperature dry desulfurization system has been investigated on a pilot-scale circulating fluidized-bed reactor. The results indicate that simultaneous removal of NO could be achieved by injecting NH_3 or urea into the desulfurization system,without affecting the SO_2 removal performance.The appropriate temperature window for denitrification is 700～750℃(or above 780℃),and the maximum of the NO removal efficiency could be 52.3%(or 73.2%) when using NH_3(or urea) as the reductant.As byproducts,the generation of N_2O and NO_2 are not obvious,and the NH_3 slip could be controlled by setting the bed temperature above a certain level.

Abstract:Wet flue gas desulfurization is considered as one of the most effective methods for the simultaneous removal of NOX and SO2 in the flue gas. To investigate the absorption performance of NOX and SO2 with the absorbents of Na2SO3 and (NH4)2SO3 and study the controlling factors of the process, the sulfite-based mixed absorbents with different mass concentration ratios of Na2SO3 to (NH4)2SO3 are employed for the gas removal in a bubble absorber. The results indicate that the absorbents have high absorption efficiency for SO2 and NO2 (all over 93%) with different mass ratios of Na2SO3 to (NH4)2SO3, and the absorbent with the proportion of 50%: 50% has the highest removal efficiency for NO (73.8%). The pH of the absorbent solution is a controlling factor affecting the absorption performance, and the alkaline condition is more conducive to absorption. The more the content of (NH4)2SO3 is, the lower the pH value and SO2 absorption amounts are. Moreover, the absorbent with a ratio of 30%: 70% has the highest removal efficiency (99.6%) and also the highest absorption amount (2761 mg/100 g) of SO2 (when the initial pH is the same). For the simultaneous absorption of NOX and SO2, the absorbent with a ratio of 30%: 70% has the highest removal efficiency (64.3% for NOX and 99.5% for SO2).

Abstract:Technologies for desulfurization and denitrition at the same time are classified as simultaneous and combined removal of SO2 and NOx by different mechanisms.The characteristics and mechanisms of several typical methods were introduced in details.Compared with technologies for DeSO2 and DeNOx separately,simultaneous removal has the advantages of cost effectiveness and flexibility.Calcium-based sorbent for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx in low temperature is a promising method to control flue gas pollution,with properties of low cost,easy product disposal and water saving.

Abstract:The SO2/NOX pollution in the flue gas of non-ferrous smelting is increasingly serious. At the same time, the accumulation of red mud (RM) in the aluminum industry and phosphorus sludge (PS) in the yellow phosphorus industry has caused serious harm to the environment. To remove SO2 and NOX from the non-ferrous smelting flue gas and realize the resource utilization of the above two solid wastes, an ultrasonic field was used in this study to strengthen the PS excited O3 process and RM wet desulfurization and denitrification process. In the process of O3 excitation, the response surface method (RSM) is used to obtain the optimal O3 excitation concentration, and the optimal reaction conditions are designed based on the response surface optimization model: T is 53.226 °C, power density is 0.4 W/cm2, PS concentration is 51.433 g/L, O3 formation concentration up to 250 ppm or more, which provides a theoretical basis for subsequent desulfurization and denitrification steps. It is proved that this study can replace the expensive traditional O3 generator and provide a basis for NOX removal in the following process. In addition, the optimum experimental conditions of ultrasonic enhanced RM desulfurization and denitrification process were also explored. Under ultrasonic frequency of 28 kHz, ultrasonic power density of 0.4 W/cm2, T of 50 °C, RM concentration of 15 g/L, and stirring intensity of 1000 rpm, the desulfurization efficiency of the reaction system can be maintained above 95 % within 250 min, and the denitrification efficiency can be maintained above 90 % within 250 min. The effect of desulfurization and denitrification in this study is much better than that of traditional methods. Finally, the reaction mechanism of ultrasonic enhanced O3 excitation and RM wet desulfurization and nitrogen removal was discussed by combining adsorption thermodynamics, isotherm, and kinetics. The results showed that the OH· free radicals generated by ultrasonic cavitation and the physical effects brought by emulsification had significant promoting effects.
High Efficient Removal Of So2 And No Of Flue Gas In A Single Fluidized Bed Reactor

Abstract:Removals of SO2 and NO with respect to different DeSO(x) sorbents and DeNO(x) catalysts for a newly developed combined desulfurization/denitration process are reported in this paper. In the process, SOx is removed by a continuously supplied fine DeSO(x) sorbent of several to tens micrometers in diameter, and NOx is reduced to N-2 by ammonia under the catalysis of a coarse DeNO(x) catalyst, the fluidization medium particles in sizes of a few hundred micrometers. The examinations were conducted in a laboratory-scale PPFB reactor and used model flue gases containing SO2 and NO. It was found that the titanium-supported catalysts, both V2O5 .WO3/TiO2 and WO3/TiO2 are adaptive for NO removal in excess of 95%, while the copper oxide sorbent, CuO . V2O5. K2SO4/Al2O3, and the aluminum-supported carbonate, Na2CO3/Al2O3, are capable of SO2 removal over 95% at the stoichiometric ratio of sorbent to SO2. However, a poisoning of NO, reduction by such a copper oxide sorbent makes the simultaneous SOx and NOx removals, with efficiencies of greater than 95% available only for the sorbent Na2CO3/Al2O3.

Abstract:Developing low-cost and green simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technologies is of great significance for sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission control at low temperatures, especially for small and medium-sized coal-fired boilers and furnaces. Herein, phosphorus sludge, an industrial waste from the production process of yellow phosphorus, has been developed to simultaneously eliminate SO2 and NOx from coal-fired flue gas. The key factors affecting the experimental results indicate that desulfurization and denitrification efficiency of over 95% can be achieved at a low temperature of 55 degrees C. Further, the absorption mechanism was investigated by characterizing the solid and liquid phases of the phosphorus sludge during the absorption process. The efficient removal of SO2 is attributed to the abundance of iron (Fe3 thorn ) and manganese (Mn2 thorn ) in the absorbent. SO2 can be rapidly catalyzed and converted to SO2-4 by them. The key to NOx removal is the oxidation of NO toward water-soluble high-valent nitrogen oxides by oxidizing reactive substances induced via yellow phosphorus, which are then absorbed by water and converted to NO3-. Meanwhile, yellow phosphorus is oxidized to phosphoric acid (H3PO4). The spent absorption slurry can be reused through wet process phosphoric acid production, as it contains sulfuric acid (H2SO4), nitric acid (HNO3), and H3PO4. Simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx from flue gas by phosphorus sludge: the performance and absorption mechanism

Abstract:Developing low-cost and green simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technologies is of great significance for SO2 and NO x emission control at low temperature, especially for small and medium-sized coal-fired boilers and furnaces. Herein, phosphorus sludge, an industrial waste from the production process of yellow phosphorus, has been developed to simultaneously eliminate SO2 and NO x from coal-fired flue gas. The key factors affecting the experimental results indicate that desulfurization and denitrification efficiency of over 95% can be achieved at a low temperature of 55 °C. Further, the absorption mechanism was investigated by characterizing the solid and liquid phases of the phosphorus sludge during the absorption process. The efficient removal of SO2 is attributed to the abundance of Fe3+ and Mn2+ in the absorbent. SO2 can be rapidly catalyzed and converted to SO2− 4 by them. The key to NO x removal is the oxidation of NO toward water-soluble high-valent nitrogen oxides by oxidizing reactive substances induced via yellow phosphorus, which are then absorbed by water and converted to NO− 3. Meanwhile, yellow phosphorus is oxidized to H3PO4. The spent absorption slurry can be reused through wet process phosphoric acid production, as it contains H2SO4, HNO3, and H3PO4. Accordingly, this is a technology with broad application prospects.

Abstract:Wet flue gas desulfurization scrubbers can be retrofitted for combined removal of SO 2 and NO x from flue gas by adding a newly developed iron(II) thiochelate to limestone slurries. This additive enhances the solubility of NO in limestone slurries by binding NO to form iron nitrosyl thiochelates. The bound NO is then converted to an ammonium ion by iron metal, regenerating the active iron(II) catalyst for continued NO capture. The conditions of the chemical regeneration of iron(II) thiochelate have been studied. This chemical reduction method is efficient, simple, and cost-effective. Integrated tests of this new iron additive on a bench-scale system have been conducted. A turbulent contact absorber was employed to test simultaneous removal of NO and SO 2 with iron(II) thiochelate in a limestone slurry. The steady-state NO removal efficiency depends on the operating conditions of an absorber, the iron chelate concentration, the fraction of the flow diverted for regeneration, and the conditions used in the regeneration reactor. The bench-scale test results were used to develop a prediction of the performance of a full-scale spray absorber.

Abstract:The simultaneous wet removal performance of NO and SO2 was studied using the oxidant absorbent NaClO2/CaO2. The factors were studied including NaClO2 and CaO2 concentrations, reaction temperature, and gaseous components, such as SO2, NO, O2, and CO2. The products in liquid and solid phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ion chromatography to determine the mechanism of simultaneous desulfurization and denitration by NaClO2/CaO2. The results indicated that the removal efficiency of SO2 was in the range of 98–99.9%, and the removal efficiencies of NO and NOx were 99.4% and 95.0%, respectively. The removal efficiencies of NO and NOx increased with the increase of NaClO2 and CaO2 concentration and reaction temperature. The gaseous components had a stronger effect on NOx removal efficiency, followed by NO removal efficiency, and SO2 removal efficiency. As SO2 concentration increased, the generation of sulfite species promoted the removal of NO and NOx. Competition for NO2 and SO2 absorption by absorbent inhibited the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NOx. The presence of O2 was beneficial for removing SO2, NO, and NOx, while the presence of CO2 was not. The main products in the liquid and solid phases were NO3−, NO2−, SO42−, and CaSO4. The reaction mechanism for simultaneous wet removal of SO2 and NO by NaClO2/CaO2 is proposed and discussed.
