Abstract:Thermal management in energy-efficient solar thermal energy conversion and transparent windows requires advanced materials with low thermal conductivity and high transparency, such as transparent silica aerogel materials. However, the large scatter domains in porous silica materials would deteriorate its optical transparency. Herein, we report transparent silica aerogel by controlling hydrolyzation and meanwhile silylation modification to enhance the integrity of microstructure under ambient pressure drying. The transparent silica aerogel materials show broad-spectrum transparency of 70% from 400 nm and 800 nm, showing promising applications in transparent windows and solar thermal energy conversion systems. The scalability for transparent windows could be achieved with a composite material by incorporating transparent polymeric materials. The solar receiver coupled with transparent silica aerogel could reach 122 °C within 12 min at the solar irradiance of 1 Sun, ~200% higher than the ambient atmosphere. The engineered structure of transparent porous silica backbone provides a pathway for solar thermal systems and transparent window applications.

Abstract:SiO2 aerogels have attracted extensive attention due to their unique structural characteristics, which exhibit many special properties, especially good optical transparency. As far as we know, the sol-gel stage during the synthesis of aerogel plays an important role in the construction of the gel skeleton. In this study, we adjusted the amount of silicon source and catalyst to explore the best scheme for preparing highly transparent SiO2 aerogels, and further clarify the effects of both on the properties of SiO2 aerogels. Results indicated that the pore size distribution was between 10 and 20 nm, the thermal conductivity was between 0.0135 and 0.021 W/(m·K), and the transmittance reached 97.78% at 800 nm of the aerogels, better than most studies. Therefore, it has the potential to be used in aerogel glass for thermal insulation.

Abstract:Silica aerogels have drawn a lot of interest both in science and technology because of their low bulk density (up to 95% of their volume is air), hydrophobicity, low thermal conductivity, high surface area, and optical transparency. Aerogels are synthesized from molecular precursors by sol-gel processing. Special drying techniques must be applied to replace the pore liquid with air while maintaining the solid network. Supercritical drying is most common; however, recently developed methods allow removal of the liquid at atmospheric pressure after chemical modification of the inner surface of the gels, leaving only a porous silica network filled with air. Therefore, by considering the surprising properties of aerogels, the present review addresses synthesis of silica aerogels by the sol-gel method, as well as drying techniques and applications in current industrial development and scientific research.

Abstract:The robust and adaptive thermal management capacity of silica aerogel has been revealed and demonstrated by tailoring its solar heating and radiative cooling properties beyond its thermal conductivity. Mechanisms and strategies to adaptively control silica aerogels' thermal management behavior are proposed by tailoring their ultraviolet‐visible light‐near infrared transmittance, infrared emissivities, and thermal conductivities. Silica aerogels, a type of porous material featuring extra low density and thermal conductivity, have drawn increasing interest from both academia and industry owing to their excellent thermal insulation performance. However, thermal insulation is always the single consideration when silica aerogels are used for thermal management. In this study, the on‐demand thermal management (ODTM) of silica aerogel with either passive thermal insulation, passive heating, or passive cooling in different environments is revealed. The ODTM behavior of silica aerogels can be simply fulfilled through their optical property variations such as solar light transparency and infrared emissivity, which are controllable via the microstructures of the building blocks and surface composition design. Robust solar heating of 25 °C higher than the ambient in the daytime and sub‐ambient cooling of 7 °C at night is achieved with the traditional transparent silica aerogel. Interestingly, sub‐ambient cooling of 5 °C in the daytime and a warmer state on cold nights is achieved by modifying its solar transmittance and infrared emissivity. This study guides a comprehensive understanding of the thermal management behavior of silica aerogels and leads to ODTM applications of silica aerogels by tailoring their optical and thermal conductivity properties.

Abstract:We have succeeded in developing hydrophobic silica aerogels over a wide range of densities (i.e. refractive indices). A pinhole drying method was invented to make possible producing highly transparent aerogels with entirely new region of refractive indices of 1.06-1.26. Obtained aerogels are more transparent than conventional ones, and the refractive index is well controlled in the pinhole drying process. A test beam experiment was carried out in order to evaluate the performance of the pinhole-dried aerogels as a Cherenkov radiator. A clear Cherenkov ring was successfully observed by a ring imaging Cherenkov counter. We also developed monolithic and hydrophobic aerogels with a density of 0.01 g/cm^3 (a low refractive index of 1.0026) as a cosmic dust capturer for the first time. Consequently, aerogels with any refractive indices between 1.0026 and 1.26 can be produced freely.

Abstract:Silica aerogel has many attractive properties, but poor mechanical properties severely limit its practical applications. Many reinforcement strategies have been implemented, however, most of which usually impair other properties of aerogel. Herein, we report a hybrid silica aerogel with excellent comprehensive performance using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and multi-alkoxy polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with a “rigid-flexible” combined structure as co-precursors by ambient pressure drying. The resulting hybrid aerogel has high strength (compressive strength of 16.25 MPa), low density (0.23 g·cm−3), uniform mesopores (10–30 nm), high specific surface area (815 m2·g−1), low thermal conductivity(28.6 mW·m−1·k−1), good thermal stability (>470 °C), high transparency (>80%) and superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of 152°) with excellent oil/water separation capability and self-cleaning properties. Moreover, the hybrid aerogel shows superb compressive resilience (up to 70% strain) and exceptional fatigue resistance (at the strain of 40% for 30 times). Benefiting from outstanding mechanical properties, the hybrid aerogel is machinable and can be cut into various shapes with a knife. The multifunctional hybrid aerogel holds great promise for the practical applications of transparent energy-saving building, thermal insulation, and oil/water separation.

Abstract:Aerogels offer outstanding characteristics such as lightweight, high porosity, large specific surface area, and low density. For silica aerogels, because of the particular network containing –Si–O–Si–, it has low thermal conductivity, excellent sound insulation and small index of refraction, as well as numerous applications in areas of aerospace, biomedical, construction industry and sensing. Although silica aerogel research is relatively established, as with other aerogels, the poor mechanical properties limit their practical application. At present, the disadvantages of aerogel can be mitigated by altering the preparation process or incorporating the improved mechanical properties of other materials. The modification of silica aerogel by polymers, inorganics, and fibers, as well as the application of silica aerogel composites, have been discussed in this review. All three methods can significantly improve the mechanical properties of aerogel. In addition, inorganic reinforcement has superior thermal qualities over polymer reinforcement due to the great heat resistance of inorganic materials. At last, we briefly outline the current challenges and limitations of adding complexes to enhance silica aerogels. A road map pointing towards a future direction in modified silica aerogel will be discussed.

Transparent silica aerogel slabs synthesized from nanoparticle colloidal suspensions at near ambient conditions on omniphobic liquid substrates

Abstract:This paper presents a novel sol-gel method to synthesize large and thick silica aerogel monoliths at near ambient conditions using a commercial aqueous solution of colloidal silica nanoparticles as building blocks. To achieve slabs with high visible transmittance and low thermal conductivity, the method combines the strategies of (i) synthesizing gels on an omniphobic perfluorocarbon liquid substrate, (ii) aging at temperatures above room temperature, and (iii) performing solvent exchange with a low-surface-tension organic solvent prior to ambient drying. The omniphobic liquid substrates were used to prevent cracking and ensure an optically-smooth surface, while nanoparticle building blocks were small (<10 nm) to limit volumetric light scattering. Gels were aged at temperatures between 25 and 80 °C for up to 21 days to make them stronger and stiffer and to reduce shrinkage and cracking during ambient drying. Ambient drying was achieved by first exchanging water in the gel pores for octane, followed by drying in an octane-rich atmosphere to decrease capillary forces. The synthesized nanoparticle-based silica aerogel monoliths had thicknesses up to 5 mm, diameters up to 10 cm, porosities exceeding 80%, and thermal conductivities as low as 0.08 W m-1 K-1. Notably, the slabs featured visible transmittance exceeding 75% even for slabs as thick as 5 mm. The as-synthesized aerogel monoliths were exposed to TMCS vapor to induce hydrophobic properties resulting in a water contact angle of 140° that prevented water infiltration into the pores and protected the aerogels from water damage. This simple synthesis route conducted at near ambient conditions produces hydrophobic aerogel monoliths with promising optically transparent and thermally insulating properties that can be adhered to glass panes for window insulation and solar-thermal energy conversion applications.

Abstract:SiO 2 aerogels have an inherent optical transparency, but there is a hydrophilic defect and high transparency and hydrophobicity seem impossible to achieve at the same time. In order to realize the practical application value of highly transparent aerogel, our study used hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) as the hydrophobic agent to improve the hydrophobicity of the prepared highly transparent SiO 2 aerogels. We investigated the effects of HMDS concentration and modification duration on SiO 2 aerogels through the chemical liquid method. Results showed that the concentration and modification time of HMDS have no significant effect on the microstructure and properties of highly transparent SiO 2 aerogels, which maintained uniform microstructure, low thermal conductivity, good thermal stability and contact angles were all above 136°. Hydrophobic and highly transparent SiO 2 aerogels hold great potential for use as observation windows in the aerospace applications, building thermal management, and transparent coating.

Abstract:Aerogel fibers, the simultaneous embodiment of aerogel 3D network and fibrous geometry, have shown great advantages over natural and synthetic fibers in thermal insulation. However, as a fast gelation to ensure aerogel fiber spinning generally induces rapid local clustering of precursor particles (i.e., phase separation) and unavoidably results in nontransparency and nonuniformity in the gel state, a severe challenge remains in remedying the spinning to make transparent aerogel fibers come true. Herein, we report a reaction spinning toward highly porous silica aerogel fibers, where the Brownian motion (i.e., diffusion) of colloidal particles is hampered during spinning to allow the maintaining of the fiber shape, while a rapid gelation reaction is activated by concentrated ammonia to solidify the fiber. The aggregation degree of the primary particles can be precisely controlled by pH-dependent hydrolyzation, and thus, the final aerogel fiber can be either transparent or opaque, as dominated by Rayleigh or Mie scattering. Abstract:Silica aerogels are the lightest materials with a typical interconnected nanostructure. They have received much attention due to their extraordinary properties and their potential applications in many fields. Conventionally silica aerogels have been made by supercritical drying process which is complicated, expensive and unsafe to a certain extent. In order to promote the production of silica aerogels on a large scale and for commercial applications, it is urgently necessary to probe the preparing technique of silica aerogels via ambient pressure drying at a reasonable cost. In recent years, significant developments in the ambient pressure drying technique have been achieved. This article gives an overview of the recent research progresses in preparation methods of silica aerogels via ambient pressure drying technique and the most updated information in preparation of silica aerogel composite materials. Silica aerogel composite materials reinforced by fiber and polymer improve the mechanical properties and further widen the application areas of silica aerogels.

Abstract:Aerogels are highly porous materials with fascinating properties prepared using sol-gel chemistry. Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, aerogels are recognized as potential candidates for diverse applications, including thermal insulation, sensor, environmental remediation, etc. Despite these applications, aerogels are not routinely found in our daily life because they are fragile and have highly limited scale-up productions. It remains extremely challenging to improve the mechanical properties of aerogels without adversely affecting their other properties. To boost the practical applications, it is necessary to develop efficient, low-cost methods to produce aerogels in a sustainable way. This comprehensive review surveys the progress in the development of aerogels and their classification based on the chemical composition of the network. Recent achievements in organic, inorganic, and hybrid materials and their outstanding physical properties are discussed. The major focus of this review lies in approaches that allow tailoring of aerogel properties to meet application-driven requirements. We begin with a brief discussion of the fundamental issues in silica aerogels and then proceed to provide an overview of the synthesis of organic and hybrid aerogels from various precursors. Organic aerogels show promising results with excellent mechanical strength, but there are still several issues that need further exploration. Finally, growing points and perspectives of the aerogel field are summarized.

Abstract:Aerogels, due to their unique features like lightweight, ultra-low thermal conductivity, and design variations, have gotten a lot of interest in thermal insulation, photocatalysis, and protective areas. Besides their superior thermal properties, aerogel thermal insulation and photocatalyst materials also possess many inherent flaws, such as handling issues, high manufacturing costs, and low strength as well as toughness. The most persuasive and successful ways to improve photocatalytic and thermal insulating qualities while lowering costs are composition optimization and microstructure reconstruction. Their high surface area and porosity make them ideal for enhancing the efficiency and capacity of these devices. Research may lead to more efficient and longer-lasting energy storage solutions. This review describes the characteristics, microstructural reconstruction, design variation, and properties of all aerogel fabrication techniques and provides a comprehensive overview of scientific achievements linked to them. The effectiveness of raw material compositions, properties, and mechanical parameters are also discussed. The major goal of this review is to highlight the aerogel-based materials and design variations and to explore the most potential development trends for photocatalysis and thermal applications. The industrial as well as technical applications of silica aerogels are also highlighted. This review highlights futuristic applications of aerogel-based textile materials to alleviate the CO2 burden on our atmosphere, either by providing next-level thermal insulation or by employing them in CO2 mitigating technologies such as CO2 capture.

Abstract:In this study, two types of silica coating glass, namely aerogel coating glass and mesoporous silica coating glass, were prepared by sol-gel method, and their microstructure, optical and thermal properties were investigated and compared. The results show that both coatings gained porous structure, with porosity of 88% and pore size ranged from 20–100nm for aerogel, and porosity of 7.14% and pore size around 3nm for mesoporous silica coating. With thickness close to that of aerogel, mesoporous silica coating which has better ordered pore arrangement and uniform pore size exhibits higher transmittance in visible light region and lower thermal conductivity than aerogel coating does, though its porosity is smaller.
Research progress and applications of silica-based aerogels – a bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Silica aerogels are three-dimensional porous materials that were initially produced in 1931. During the past nearly 90 years, silica aerogels have been applied extensively in many fields. In order to grasp the progress of silica-based aerogels, we utilize bibliometrics and visualization methods to analyze the research hotspots and the application of this important field. Firstly, we collect all the publications on silica-based aerogels and then analyze their research trends and performances by a bibliometric method regarding publication year/citation, country/institute, journals, and keywords. Following this, the major research hotspots of this area with a focus on synthesis, mechanical property regulation, and the applications for thermal insulation, adsorption, and Cherenkov detector radiators are identified and reviewed. Finally, current challenges and directions in the future regarding silica-based aerogels are also proposed.

Abstract:Silica aerogel is a very light and highly porous form of silica glass, with densities and refractive indices much lower than those of ordinary solids. We describe optical interactions with aerogel surrounding tapered fibres or inside the holes of photonic crystal fibres. This enables a new class of fibre devices exploiting the properties of the aerogel as a rigid yet porous replacement for air, as a nonlinear medium and as a host for dopants. Examples include a stable package for fused couplers, a gas sensor and a nonlinear light source.
