Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots have great practical value because of their unique optical characteristics. In this paper, the luminescent principle and properties of semiconductor quantum dots were introduced combining with our work about this aspect. In the experiments, it was found that the luminescent stability of the core/shell structural semiconductor quantum dots CdSe/CdS was enhanced in comparison with the bare CdSe quantum dots, and the absorption and emission spectra of the CdSe/CdS quantum dots shifted to the longer wavelength. It was also observed that the different sized semiconductor quantum dots showed different colors, and the absorption and emission spectra shifted to the longer wavelength as the size of the quantum dots increased. Particularly, the progress and applications of semiconductor quantum dots in optoelectronic devices and biomedicine were reviewed, and the perspective of the development was viewed.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for the realization of future optoelectronic technologies, thanks to their size-tunable electronic and optical properties. Among various types of QDs, colloidal "giant" QDs (g-QDs, core/thick-shell) have been widely used in different applications, such as solar cells, light emitting devices, luminescent solar concentrators and photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. However, g-QDs have a thick-shell which serves as a physical barrier for electron and hole transfer, leading to a slow charge transfer rate. In this work, we synthesized CdSe/CdSexS1-x/CdS core/shell/shell g-QDs with an intermediate CdSexS1-x alloyed layer. The presence of this interfacial layer largely improves the absorption of CdSe/CdS QDs, particularly in the 300-650 nm range. By engineering the interfacial layer, the holes can leak more into the CdS shell region compared to that of CdSe/CdS QDs. PEC devices based on alloyed g-QDs exhibit a 20% higher saturated photocurrent density (11 ± 0.5 mA cm-2) compared to CdSe/CdS QDs. In addition, after one-hour illumination (100 mW cm-2), the PEC cell based on alloyed g-QDs still exhibits a photocurrent density of 7.5 mA cm-2, maintaining 70% of its initial value. Such alloyed g-QDs are very promising for several emerging optoelectronic applications, where charge separation, transfer and transport play a critical role for the realization of high performance devices.

Abstract:Electroluminescent (EL) devices with an ITO/ZnS/CdSe/ZnS/Al structure were fabricated using chemically synthesized colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) as active layer. The size of the CdSe QDs is about 4.3 nm measured by a transmission electron microscope. Scanning electron microscope characterization shows smooth surfaces of ZnS layers and Al electrodes. CdSe (111) and ZnS (111) diffraction peaks are observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns, verifying the incorporation of CdSe QDs and ZnS insulator materials in the devices. Room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal that the CdSe QDs' emission peak is located at 614 rim. EL measurements at room temperature show a broad emission band ranging from 450 nm to 850 nm with a peak wavelength located at about 800 nm. Finally, the light emitting mechanism for the EL devices is proposed and the discrepancy between PL and EL spectra is interpreted.
Excitonic characteristics of blue-emitting quantum dot materials in group II-VI using hybrid time-dependent density functional theory

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) of group II-VI are key ingredients of next-generation QD light-emitting diodes technology for display and lighting, yet the understanding of their luminescent characteristics are far from being mature. Using a hybrid time-dependent density functional theory, we have studied the electronic and excitonic properties of blue-emitting colloidal QDs within group II-VI containing a thousand atoms or more, including CdSe, CdS, ZnSe, and ZnS QDs, considering both quantum confinement and surface ligand effects. It is found that the calculated optical gaps are in excellent quantitative agreement with experiment, irrespective of the QD nature. Scaling laws of size-dependent energy gaps governed solely by quantum confinement effects have further been explored at both single-particle level and correlated excitonic level for all QDs. With concurrently stoichiometric control and enhancing quantum confinement effects, we have predicted an unusual switching of symmetry character of the highest occupied molecular orbital state from a Γ3 to a Γ1 symmetry at ultrasmall size (∼1 nm) for all QDs. After the switching, pronounced linearly polarized band-edge excitonic emission is activated. The radiative exciton decay lifetime is found to increase monotonically with increasing the QD size and tends to saturate at larger sizes. Finally, we have explored the surface passivation mechanism of inorganic chloride ligand, and identified various favorable Cd-Cl bonding configurations which enable an effective surface passivation resembling the commonly applied pseudohydrogen passivation scheme. We find that chloride ligand serves as a hole delocalization ligand and tends to redshift the absorption spectra, reduce the absorption intensity, and significantly enhance the exciton decay lifetime. Our results provide a guideline for spectroscopic studies of excitonic characteristics of colloidal QDs within group II-VI.

Abstract:For optoelectronic applications, colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) have been integrated into solid devices by using optically transparent polymer matrices that embedded the colloidal QDs. We systematically studied the effect of annealing and photoactivation on the band-band (BB) and surface trap state (STS) transitions of colloidal CdSe QDs embedded in polymethylmethacrylate (QDs-PMMA). The QDs-PMMA composites demonstrate enhancement of the STS emissions while their annealing leads to an intensity quench of both BB and STS emissions. The annealing process also causes the red shift of the BB emission. By contrast, photoactivation of QDs-PMMA composites results in the remarkable recovery of luminescence intensity accompanied by blue shift of the emissions. Furthermore, it is found in the photoactivation process that the STS emission can be saturated earlier than the BB emission, which renders it possible to tune the light color of the emissions. The combination of annealing and photoactivation could undoubtedly provide an effective way to precisely tune the colors of light-emitting devices that use colloidal CdSe QDs.

Abstract:Monodisperse CdSe quantum dots were synthesized by TOPO assisted reaction in nonaqueous solution.The samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy,X-ray powder diffraction,size distribution histograms,UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra.The results indicate that the monodisperse quantum dots exhibit zinc blende(cubic)diffraction patterns and high PL quantum yield.Moreover,the mechanism of formation of zinc blende structure was preliminarily discussed.

Abstract:Colloidal ZnSe quantum dots were synthesized by using cheap and low toxic zinc oxide (ZnO) in an organic solvent system of 1-hexadecylamine (HDA), lauric acid (LA) and tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP). The effects of HDA dosage and growth time on the microstructure and optical properties of ZnSe were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), spectrofluorometers and ultraviolet spectrophotometer, respectively. The results showed that ZnSe quantum dots with the best range of the size evolution were obtained under the condition of injection at 300 degrees C and growth at 260 degrees C by choosing the optimal parameters of ZnO:HDA:LA = 1:2.1:5.2 and 1 mol/L TOPSe. Its size became larger and the emission peak shifted obviously to red with the increasing of growth time. Meanwhile, the obtained ZnSe was of the wurtzite structure and had good uniformity. The fluorescence emission intensity and photochemical stability of ZnSe capping with ZnS layer was improved apparently, and the obtained ZnSe/ZnS QDs also had the good uniformity and monodispersity.

Abstract:Doping in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is a promising approach for introducing unique properties compared to pure QDs. Although manganese (Mn) ion-doped wide band gap QDs have been widely studied, the optical properties of Mn-doped narrow band gap semiconductors are not well understood. Here, we report the synthesis of oil-soluble Mn-doped lead sulfide (PbS) QDs of identical size with different Mn contents. Compared to pure PbS QDs, the photoluminescence (PL) peak positions of Mn-doped PbS QDs exhibit a significant red-shift, resulting in a larger Stokes shift. The large Stokes shift of Mn-doped QDs is due to the electronic state of Mn ions, in which the photogenerated electron is transferred to the energy states of Mn ions and then recombined with holes. Mn-doped PbS QDs exhibit a faster temperature-dependent PL response compared to pure PbS QDs, demonstrating that the Mn-doped PbS QDs are promising alternatives for use as thermal sensors.

Abstract:Indium arsenide quantum dots, which typically emit in the near-infrared, have been utilized in various optoelectronics and biomedical applications, such as covert illumination, optical communication, and deep-tissue imaging. While theory predicts that further quantum confinement through size reduction could enable visible light emission, systems with larger optical bandgaps have not been realized. Here, we report a method of preparing highly luminescent, visible-light-emitting In(Zn)As/ZnSe/ZnS QD, using a low-temperature nanocluster synthesis approach. Each QD contains an ultraconfined In(Zn)As nanocluster and fluoresces at tunable wavelengths between 538 and 640 nm with a high photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 58%. We confirm, through DFT and spectroscopic analysis, that the strong confinement effects in the few-atom-wide In(Zn)As nanoclusters are responsible for the significant spectral shift from the near-infrared to the visible region. Abstract:Nonlinear optical characteristics of chemically prepared silver selenide (Ag 2 Se, 3.7 nm) and lead selenide (PbSe, 6.3 nm) colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are investigated using the 1030 nm femtosecond pulses. Ag 2 Se QDs demonstrated two-photon absorption followed by saturable absorption. PbSe QDs initially showed the saturable absorption at small intensities of 1030 nm probe pulses, followed by reverse saturable absorption at stronger excitation. The difference in the positive nonlinear optical absorption mechanisms in these two QD colloids is attributed to their different bandgaps. The studied QD colloids exhibited the Kerr-induced positive nonlinear refraction. Transient absorption studies of the QDs showed that photoexcitation creates a hot exciton that forms band-edge exciton within 1.2 ps after excitation. Most of the electron-hole pairs further recombine through band-to-band recombination with a time constant of 1490 ps. Furthermore, the results from the transient absorption studies indicate the contribution of trap-assisted recombination occurs on a time scale exceeding that of the experimental time window.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of quaternary-alloyed Zn(x)Cd(1-x)S(y)Se(1-y) quantum dots (ZnCdSSe QQDs) across the entire composition range (x, y) = 0 to 1 with a size tunable from 4.0 to 10.0 nm by a facile, "green", phosphine-free, low-cost colloidal method. The ZnCdSSe QQDs have both composition- and size-dependent band gaps, which can be hybrid-engineered to span the entire visible spectrum. The new ZnCdSSe QQDs are easy to synthesize and have high quantum yields (up to 65%) without the necessity of overcoating a shell. These new quantum dots may find broad uses in biolabeling, biosensing, light-emitting diodes, and other nanodevice applications.

Abstract:The applications of various optical and electrical characterization techniques to the study of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are summarized. Photoconductivity enhancement effect in CdS-PVK nanocomposite is studied by optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL), photoconductivity spectroscopy, and time-resolved PL. It is found that the photoconductivity of the composite is greatly enhanced in comparison with that of a simple mixture of CdS nano-particles and PVK. PL spectra have shown that luminescence from PVK is dramatically quenched by the incorporation of a low density of CdS particles. Time-resolved spectra reveal that the decay of the PL from the dots of the composite in much longer than that in the simple mixture. These have been attributed to a fast carrier transfer mechanism between CdS QDs and PVK matrix. In addition, optical properties of PVP-capped ZnO QDs are investigated in details. Typical PL spectra of PVP-capped ZnO QDs consist of a sharp UV peak located at about 3.45 eV and a broad green emission band centered at 2.34 eV. At certain Zn 2+/ PVP ratios the green emission band is quenched and only strong UV emission remains. This effect is attributed to the surface modification of ZnO quantum dots with PVP. We are able to associate the UV emission from ZnO QDs to localized states by applying temperature and excitation power dependent PL. Finally, the electronic level of molecular beam epitaxy grown self-organized ZnSe QDs embedded in ZnS is determined by applying PL, capacitance-voltage measurement, and deep level transient spectroscopy.

Abstract:Epitaxial growth of a protective semiconductor shell on a colloidal quantum dot (QD) core is the key strategy for achieving high fluorescence quantum efficiency and essential stability for optoelectronic applications and biotagging with emissive QDs. Herein we investigate the effect of shell growth rate on the structure and optical properties in blue-emitting ZnSe/ZnS QDs with narrow emission line width. Tuning the precursor reactivity modifies the growth mode of ZnS shells on ZnSe cores transforming from kinetic (fast) to thermodynamic (slow) growth regimes. In the thermodynamic growth regime, enhanced fluorescence quantum yields and reduced on–off blinking are achieved. This high performance is ascribed to the effective avoidance of traps at the interface between the core and the shell, which are detrimental to the emission properties. Our study points to a general strategy to obtain high-quality core/shell QDs with enhanced optical properties through controlled reactivity yielding shell growth in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:The broadband spontaneous emission of excitons in CdSe quantum dots (QDs) is of great interest for the spectral imaging of living organisms or specific substances in the visible spectral region as well as in the biological optical window near the infrared spectral region. Semiconductor QDs that are near the bulk Bohr radius exhibit wide spectral tunability and high color purity due to quantum confinement of excitons within the dot boundary. However, with reducing dot size, the role of the surface-trapped state increases. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) confirms this with a ~3:1 emission intensity decrease from the surface-trapped state compared to the band edge. Large crystal irregularity, dangling ions, and foreign molecules can introduce new electronic transitions from surface-trapped states that provide broad spontaneous emission in the spectral region from visible to near IR in addition to the band edge emission. The time-resolved PL analyzed the fractional contributions of band edge, surface-trapped states, and possible intermediate trapped states to the broad spectral emission in order to characterize the CdSe QDs.

Abstract:Synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals of II-VI semiconductor materials has been refined in recent decades and their size dependent optoelectronic properties have been well established. Here we report a facile synthesis of CdSe-CdS core-shell heterostructures using a two-step hot injection process. Red-shifts in absorption and photoluminescence spectra show that the obtained quantum dots have quasi-type-II alignment of energy levels. The obtained nanocrystals have a heterostructure with a large and highly faceted tetrahedral CdS shell grown epitaxially over a spherical CdSe core. The obtained morphology as well as high resolution electron microscopy confirms that the tetrahedral shell have a zinc blende crystal structure. A phenomenological mechanism for the growth and morphology of the nanocrystals is discussed.

Abstract:Optical and electrical properties of ZnSe self-organized quantum dots were investigated using photoluminescence, capacitance-voltage, and deep level transient Fourier spectroscopy techniques. The temperature dependence of photoluminescence was employed to clarify the mechanism of photoluminescence thermal quenching processes in ZnSe quantum dots. A theoretic fit on considering a two-step quenching processes well explained the experimental data. The apparent carrier concentration profile obtained from capacitance-voltage measurements exhibits an accumulation peak at the depth of about 100nm below the sample surface, which is in good agreement with the location of the quantum dot layer. The electronic ground state of ZnSe quantum dots is determined to be about 0.11 eV below the conduction band of ZnS, which is similar to that obtained by simulating the thermal quenching of ZnSe photoluminescence.
New insights on the luminescence properties and Judd-Ofelt analysis of Er-doped ZnO semiconductor quantum dots

Abstract:In this study, Er3+ doped ZnO semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using a wet chemical method. The successful doping of Er3+ ions into the ZnO host lattice and the elemental composition was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The ZnO and Er3+ doped ZnO QDs with a hexagonal structure, spherical shape, and particle size of approximately 5 nm were revealed by XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The absorption, luminescence properties, and fluorescence lifetimes of the samples were studied as the concentration of Er3+ ions varied. The intensity parameters, emission transition probabilities, branching ratios, and emission lifetimes of the excited levels of Er3+ ions in the ZnO host were determined using the Judd-Ofelt theory, which provided insight into the covalent relationship between the ions and ligands as well as the nature of the ZnO host lattice. Moreover, the energy transfer process from the ZnO host to Er3+ ions and the yield of this process are explained in detail along with specific calculations.
