Abstract:We developed Pickering foams highly stabilized by high-aspect-ratio (xi = diameter/thickness) nano-sheets. The effects of particle aspect ratio, concentration, and hydrophobicity were also investigated. To our knowledge, our study provides the first experimental evidence of the effect of particle aspect ratio on particle-stabilized foams. The adsorption properties of these highly anisotropic nano-sheets are strongly affected by their small thickness and large lateral size (i.e., two-dimensional). These high-aspect-ratio nano-sheets were obtained by exfoliation of a-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) crystals with propylamine (C3H7NH2, PA). The hydrophobicity of the nano-sheets was tailored by adjusting the PA : ZrP molar ratio in the suspension. The morphology and stability of the foam depend on the nano-sheet aspect ratio and concentration as well as on the PA : ZrP molar ratio. Here, we found that using low and high aspect ratio nano-sheets having a high and an intermediate degree of hydrophobicity, respectively, is the successful formula to obtain high foam stability. The aqueous foams were characterized by optical and cross-polarized micrographs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of dried foams revealed the adsorption of the PA-ZrP nano-sheets on the air-water interface. The foam stability was studied by measuring the foam and the water volume as a function of time to obtain the foam decay and water drainage rate, respectively. We also observed that the foams were stabilized by jammed layers of nano-sheets located in the bulk and at the air-water interface. These layers of particles prevent air diffusion between the bubbles, hence arresting Ostwald ripening and coalescence.

Abstract:Pickering emulsions stabilized by micro/nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention owing to their great potential in various applications ranging from cosmetic and food industries to catalysis, tissue engineering and drug delivery. There is a growing demand to design "green" micro/nanoparticles for constructing stable Pickering emulsions. Micro/nanoparticles derived from the naturally occurring polysaccharides including cellulose, chitin, chitosan and starch are capable of assembling at oil/water interfaces and are promising green candidates because of their excellent biodegradability and renewability. The physicochemical properties of the micro/nanoparticles, which are determined by the fabricating approaches and/or post-modification methods, have a significant effect on the characteristics of the final Pickering emulsions and their applications. Herein, recent advances on Pickering emulsions stabilized by polysaccharides-based micro/nanoparticles and the construction of functional materials including porous foams, microcapsules and latex particles from these emulsions as templates, are reviewed. In particular, the effects of micro/nanoparticles properties on the characteristics of the Pickering emulsions and their applications are discussed. Furthermore, the obstacles that hinder the practical applications of polysaccharides-based micro/nanoparticles and Pickering emulsions as well as the prospects for the future development, are discussed.

Abstract:Pickering multiphase systems stabilized by solid particles have recently attracted increasing attention due to their excellent stability. Among various solid stabilizers, natural and renewable cellulosic micro/nanoparticles that are derived from agricultural and forestry sources have become promising candidates for Pickering stabilization due to their unique morphological features and tunable surface properties. In this review, recent progress on forming and stabilizing Pickering multiphase systems using cellulosic colloidal particles is summarized, including the physicochemical factors affecting their assembly at the interfaces and the preparation methods suitable for producing Pickering emulsions. In addition, relevant application prospects of corresponding Pickering multiphase materials are outlined. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives of such renewable Pickering multiphase systems are presented. This review aims to encourage the utilization of cellulosic micro/nanoparticles as key components in the development of Pickering systems, leading to enhanced performance and unique functionalities.

Abstract:Recently, numbers of studies have been conducted by using nanoparticles as novel foam stabilizer to enhance oil recovery (EOR). However, previous studies have not classified the nanoparticles into hydrophilic and hydrophobic/modified to explain the influence factors and mechanisms of different wettability nanoparticles stabilizing foam. Moreover, the mechanisms of nanoparticles stabilizing foam for EOR and the nanoparticles modification mechanism have not been discussed amply. In this review, the control parameters and the mechanisms of hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanoparticles on foam stability were discussed, and methods to evaluate foam stability were summarized. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of nanoparticles modification were introduced. Finally, the direction of the future studies and their application limitations were also pointed out. The main factors affected the application of nanoparticles stabilized foam included the types of nanoparticles, the modifiers for nanoparticles, the salinity, temperature and the concentration ratio between nanoparticles and surfactant. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanoparticles could enhance the detachment energy, form network structure to stabilize foam. The synergistic effects between nanoparticles and surfactant and the existence state of nanoparticles on lamellae were different between hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanoparticles. NPs-foam could improve sweep efficiency in reservoir, emulsify the crude oil and flow into low permeability pores by fluid diversion. The foam stability measurement methods included viscosity measurement, core flooding experiment, foam thickness and size measurement, drop pressure measurement in dynamic state, and half-life time of foam in static state. It can be concluded that the synergistic effects influenced the hydrophobicity of nanoparticles, the moderate hydrophobic (contact angle ∼90º) nanoparticles were the optimum for stabilizing foam. For modified nanoparticles, the modified routes should be refined to identify the optimal modifier and synthesis route. The control parameters of nanoparticles stabilized foam should be studied further, and the low-cost and environmentally friendly nanoparticles could be the potential foam stabilizer.

Interfacial Rheology of Foam Stabilized by Nanoparticles and Their Retention in Porous Media

Abstract:Nanoparticle-stabilized foam has aroused people's attention due to its wide applications in oil fields. Understanding the dynamic surface properties of nanoparticles and their retention in reservoir formation is crucial for their application. This research presents the impact of mixing SiO2 nanoparticles and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on foaming and interfacial properties. Also, the retention behaviors of nanoparticles in sandpacks with different permeabilities are discussed by employing the core-flooding apparatus. The experimental results show that nanoparticles and SDS exhibit synergy on foam stability, although the foam volume decreases in the presence of nanoparticles. It is inferred that SDS may determine the equilibrium surface pressure of the mixed system, as the nanoparticles can affect the surface pressure slightly. There exists a competitive behavior between SDS and nanoparticles during adsorption, and the presence of nanoparticles lowers the adsorption rate of the mixing system. The film behaves more elastic for SiO2/SDS dispersion as the dilatational elasticity of the dispersion is enhanced in the presence of nanoparticles, while the dilatational viscosity changes little. In the retention experiments, nanoparticles can flow through the sandpack smoothly due to their nanometer sizes with few changes on the sandpack permeability. The nanoparticle retention decreases with increasing the sandpack permeability, and it is possible to reinject the recovered nanoparticles into the formation by comparing the foam properties before and after sandpack injection. We hope this research may guide the further application of nanoparticle-stabilized foam in oil fields.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Ultra‐highly porous and mechanically strong materials are made by tuning interfacial chemistry of the nanoparticle suspensions. The introduced ethanol assists the surfactant to be adsorbed onto the silica surface with enhanced efficiency. High energy of attachment of the nanoparticles improves the stability of the Pickering system. The strong interactions within the foam endow the green bodies with mechanical strengths as well. Highly porous foam ceramics exhibit broad prospects for multifunctional applications. With the facile Pickering‐based foaming technique, wet foams consisting of nanoparticles (NPs) may exhibit high strengths. However, they also experience linear shrinkages as high as 50% after drying and sintering process. Suitable solutions for improving this situation have not been found yet. This work develops a method for fabricating NP‐made foam ceramics by tuning the interfacial chemistry of this Pickering system. Trace amounts of ethanol are used to adjust the adsorbing behavior of surfactants on the silica surface to enhance the energy of attachment of the Pickering systems. Combined with the altered capillary forces, the linear shrinkages of the foam ceramic are considerably lowered. The pore wall of the obtained foam ceramics can be tuned to either closed or open due to the "coffee ring" effect by adjusting the solid content and sintering temperature. The samples present high thermal insulating properties and high mechanical strength even the unsintered ones, which also show good stability in liquid environments. Combined with the direct ink writing (DIW) technique, these freely shaped materials with tunable pore structures can be readily exploited in tissue scaffolds, catalyst carriers, thermal insulators, battery electrodes, and liquid/gas filtration, etc.

Investigations on the Influencing Mechanisms of SiO 2 Nanoparticles on Foam Stability

Abstract:Foam stability is significantly important for enhancing oil recovery and sequestration of carbon dioxide underground. Nanoparticles have been widely used to improve foam stability, but traditional experiments cannot well reveal the mechanisms of nanoparticles on stabilizing foams and the interactions among nanoparticles, surfactants, and liquid films. In order to clarify the mechanisms of enhancing foam stability by nanoparticles, the adsorption behaviors of nanoparticles with different modification degrees on the liquid film and the effects of different compounded systems of nanoparticles and surfactants on the foam stability were studied by molecular simulation. Moreover, the foam stability of the compounded systems was evaluated by experiments. The results show that the foam stability of single nanoparticles increases first and then decreases with the increase of hydrophobic properties. The electrically charged properties of nanoparticles can significantly affect the foam stability of the compound system with nanoparticles and surfactants. The electrostatic repulsion between hydrophilic nanoparticles and anionic surfactants results in irregular arrangement of surfactants in the liquid film, which reduces foam stability. On the contrary, the electrostatic attraction between cationic surfactants and hydrophilic nanoparticles can promote the orderly arrangement of cationic surfactants and thus enhance the foam stability. Amphiphilic nanoparticles can interact with anionic or cationic surfactants, which not only strengthens the regular arrangement of surfactants on the interface but also fills the interface cavity and improves the foam stability. In addition, the experimental results show that there is an optimal ratio between nanoparticles and surfactants. Nanoparticles can reduce the foaming volume to a certain extent, but appropriate nanoparticles can effectively prolong the foam half-life. This study elucidates the mechanism of the nanoparticles/surfactant system in enhancing foam stability and provides an important theoretical basis and guidance for nanoparticle modification and optimization of foam flooding.

Abstract:The stabilization of Pickering emulsions using micro/nanoparticles has gained significant attention due to their wide range of potential applications in industries such as cosmetics, food, catalysis, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. There is a growing demand for the development of environmentally friendly micro/nanoparticles to create stable Pickering emulsions. Naturally occurring polysaccharides like pectin offer promising options as they can assemble at oil/water interfaces. This polysaccharide is considered a green candidate because of its biodegradability and renewable nature. The physicochemical properties of micro/nanoparticles, influenced by fabrication methods and post-modification techniques, greatly impact the characteristics and applications of the resulting Pickering emulsions. This review focuses on recent advancements in Pickering emulsions stabilized by pectin-based micro/nanoparticles, as well as the application of functional materials in delivery systems, bio-based films and 3D printing using these emulsions as templates. The effects of micro/nanoparticle properties on the characteristics of Pickering emulsions and their applications are discussed. Additionally, the obstacles that currently hinder the practical implementation of pectin-based micro/nanoparticles and Pickering emulsions, along with future prospects for their development, are addressed.

Abstract:Particle-stabilized technique for fabricating foam ceramics was developed in 2006. Porous ceramics with porosity over 95% can be prepared by this newly developed method. This foaming technique was derived from the principle of Pickering foam to a large extent. The high internal phase volume, narrow distribution of pore size as well as the structural stability of the Pickering system enable the final ceramic products to realize their functionality in a variety of applications. However, the interfacial aspect of the foaming system determines the final product in many ways, which brings this novel method details to explore and possibilities to challenge. The current review introduces the particle-stabilized method combining with colloid and surface science since particles are the building block of ceramic materials. The history of this newly invented method was mentioned at first, followed by foam ceramic products prepared by this foaming technique combining with corresponding mechanism. Some representative applications involving ceramic materials made by particle-stabilized method were discussed. At last, we conclude the overall article and put forward some outlooks and challenges about the future direction of this unique foaming technique.
Nanocellulose-stabilized Pickering emulsions : fabrication, stabilization, and food applications

Abstract:Pickering emulsions have been widely studied due to their good stability and potential applications. Nanocellulose including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNFs) has emerged as sustainable stabilizers/emulsifiers in food-related Pickering emulsions due to their favorable properties such as renewability, low toxicity, amphiphilicity, biocompatibility, and high aspect ratio. Nanocellulose can be widely obtained from different sources and extraction methods and can effectively stabilize Pickering emulsions via the irreversible adsorption onto oil-water interface. The synergistic effects of nanocellulose and other substances can further enhance the interfacial networks. The nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions have potential food-related applications in delivery systems, food packaging materials, and fat substitutes. In this review, we highlight key fundamental work and recent reports on nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsion systems. The sources and extraction of nanocellulose and the fabrication of nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions are briefly summarized. Furthermore, the synergistic stability and food-related applications of nanocellulose-stabilized Pickering emulsions are spotlighted.

Abstract:Foam fluids are widely used in petroleum engineering, but long-standing foam stability problems have limited the effectiveness of their use. The study explores the synergistic effects and influencing factors of SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) with different wettability properties and three different surfactants. The paper investigates the foaming performance of different types of surfactants and analyzes and compares the stability of foam after adding hydrophilic and hydrophobic SiO2-NPs from macroscopic as well as microscopic perspectives, and the effects of temperature and inorganic salts on the stability of mixed solutions. The experimental results show that: 1) hydrophilic nanoparticles can significantly enhance the foam stability of amphoteric surfactants, with a small increase in the foam stability of anionic and cationic surfactants; 2) The concentration of nanoparticles did not have a significant effect on the stability of the cationic surfactants and this conclusion was verified in the experimental results of the surface tension measured below;3) The cationic surfactants showed better temperature resistance at temperatures of 50–90 °C. Both amphoteric surfactant solutions with the addition of hydrophilic SiO2-NPs or hydrophobic SiO2-NPs significantly improved the temperature resistance of the foam at high temperatures. The anionic surfactant solution with hydrophobic SiO2-NPs did not enhance the solution temperature resistance; 4) The surface tension of the surfactant solution gradually increases with increasing concentration of hydrophilic or hydrophobic SiO2-NPs and then levels off; 5) the hydrophilic SiO2-NPs had a significant effect on the salt tolerance of the anionic and amphoteric surfactant solutions. The salt tolerance of cationic surfactant solutions with hydrophobic SiO2-NPs was better than that of surfactants with hydrophilic SiO2-NPs.

Investigation of the Effect of Nanoparticle-Stabilized Foam on EOR: Nitrogen Foam and Methane Foam

Abstract:In recent years, studies conducted on foam stabilization have focused on nanoparticles by generating strong adsorption at the interface to stabilize the foam under harsh reservoir conditions. Meanwhile, the selection of a gas source is also of great importance for foam performance. In this study, a mixed system of surfactants was selected, and the foamability and foam stability of nitrogen and methane were evaluated according to the improved jet method. After adding modified SiO2 nanoparticles, the foam-related parameters were analyzed. The plugging abilities of the different foams were compared through core-flooding experiments, and the oil displacement effects of the different foams were compared through microfluidic experiments. The results show that the amphoteric surfactant betaine has an excellent synergistic effect on the anionic surfactant SDS. The methane foam produced using the jet method has a larger initial volume than the nitrogen foam, but its stability is poor. The half-life of the nitrogen foam is about two times that of the methane foam. After adding 1.0 wt % SiO2 nanoparticles to the surfactant solution, the viscosity and stability of the formed foam improve. However, the maximum viscosity of the surfactant nanoparticle foam (surfactant-NP foam) is 53 mPa·s higher than that of the surfactant foam. In the core-flooding experiment, the plugging performance of the methane foam was worse than that of the nitrogen foam, and in the microfluidic experiment, the oil displacement abilities of the methane foam and the nitrogen foam were similar. The plugging performance and the oil displacement effect of the foam are greatly improved by adding nanoparticles. The surfactant-NP foam flooding has a better oil displacement effect and can enhance the recovery factor by more than 30%. Under actual high-pressure reservoir conditions, although the stability of the methane foam is weaker than that of the nitrogen foam, some methane may be dissolved in the crude oil to decrease the viscosity after the foam collapses, which leads to the methane foam being the preferred method in oilfields.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Pickering emulsion, an emulsion prepared by replacing conventional surfactants with solid particles, has been extensively used to construct a variety of functional materials especially 3D porous foams or aerogels. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene have recently garnered tremendous attention and considered as a promising candidate for the construction of functional nanomaterials due to their fascinating properties. However, it remains a challenge to construct MXene-based composite porous materials. Herein, the Pickering emulsion co-stabilized by multiple kinds of particles and the subsequent MXene-based multifunctional composite foam were studied. The formation mechanism of Pickering emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), nickel nanowires (Ni NW), and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was investigated along with their stabilization mechanism in a complex water-oil environment. The final Pickering emulsions exhibited excellent stability over a wide pH range (5−11) and ionic strength (0–400 mM). Further, the CNF/MXene/Ni (CMN) composite foam was prepared by freeze-drying the emulsion gel. The as-prepared foam exhibited a minimum reflection loss of −30.2 dB at 2.8 GHz frequency. Moreover, the foam also exhibited promising photothermal conversion behavior, maintaining a temperature of up to approximately 80.9 °C for 200 s of exposure to 1 Sun. Therefore, this work affords a new and universal method to prepare MXene-based multifunctional porous materials for their potential applications in many areas.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) have shown promising applications in developing the novel environmental-friendly firefighting foams. Hydrophilic silica NPs, siloxane surfactant (CoatOsil-77), and hydrocarbon surfactant (BS-12) were used to prepare mixed foam dispersions. The adsorption between surfactant molecules and NPs, and foamability of the mixed dispersions were analyzed. Thermal stability of foam was evaluated by using foam drainage, coarsening, and volume decay under thermal radiation. The strengthening mechanism of NPs on thermal stability of foam was analyzed. Results indicate that the intense interaction exists between NPs and surfactants. The presence of NPs with a concentration below 1 wt% leads to the deterioration of foam stability by accelerating foam drainage and coarsening, while a concentration of NPs above 1.5 wt% enhances foam stability. The foam coarsening, drainage, and foam volume decay were obviously delayed by NPs under thermal radiation. This research can give theoretical guidance for NP application in invention of fluorine-free firefighting foams.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Nanoparticle-stabilized foams are extremely stable, and flame retardant inorganic nanoparticles should be able to add sealing capacity of firefighting foams on flammable liquid fuels, and hence enhance fire extinguishment performance on liquid fuel fire. In practice, how do flame retardant nanoparticles resist the destructive effect of oil molecules on foam and tune foam properties? Experiments: We have prepared a nanoparticle-enhanced foam comprising of hydrocarbon surfactant, short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant, and nanoparticles. The interactions among nanoparticles and surfactant molecules were characterized by using dynamic surface tension and conductivity. Stability, rheology, and oil resistivity on liquid fuel of the nanoparticle-enhanced foam were evaluated systematically. Fire suppression effectiveness of the foams was verified based on a standard experiment. Findings: Foam stability and oil resistivity were enhanced due to self-assembled network structures formed by jammed aggregates composed by nanoparticles and surfactants in Plateau borders and bubble films, providing structural recoverability and enhanced viscoelasticity within foam. Foams containing nano-SiO2, nano-CaCO3, nano-Al(OH)3, and nano-Mg(OH)2 show difference in fire extinguishment due to different ability to enhance foam properties. Foam containing nano-Al(OH)3 shows the strongest adaptation and could shorten fire extinguishing time by 2 times and prolong burn-back time by 2.3 times compared with commercial product.

Abstract:The molecular interaction, foaming ability, and foam stability of the mixtures of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles, a cationic hydrocarbon surfactant, and a nonionic short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant were studied systematically. The results indicate that nanoparticle concentration has a considerable impact on surface activity, dynamic viscosity, conductivity, foaming ability, and foam stability. The surface activity and dynamic viscosity of the foam dispersions increased rapidly with increasing nanoparticle concentration. The conductivity and foaming ability of the dispersions decreased with the addition of nanoparticles and further decreased with increasing nanoparticle concentration. At a nanoparticle concentration below 0.1%, the addition of nanoparticles accelerated foam drainage and coarsening. At a nanoparticle concentration above 0.1%, the addition of nanoparticles enhanced foam stability by decelerating foam drainage and foam coarsening. The foam stability was further enhanced as the nanoparticle concentration increased. This study provides a basis for the application of foams stabilized by nanoparticles in fire extinguishing agents.

Abstract:Besides surfactants, which decrease the interfacial tension between two immiscible liquids, also interfacially active particles can successfully stabilize an emulsion system by attaching at the liquid–liquid interface. The preparation of the resulting Pickering emulsions has been so far investigated starting from the study of the interactions arising between the dispersed droplets and the stabilizers, till the application of these systems in a wide range of different fields. This work is intended to provide an overall overview about the development of Pickering emulsions by considering the most general aspects and scanning the diverse types of solid stabilizers. Among them, Halloysite nanotubes play a major role as naturally derived clay with emulsifying capability owing to their cheap, abundant, green and biocompatible properties. Therefore, the design of Halloysite stabilized Pickering emulsions is the main content of this review, which will survey the role of nanotubes in providing colloidal stability and will comprehensively sum up the use of these particles in technological and industrial purposes: from environmental to catalytic, from health to cultural heritage related applications. This review provides meaningful insights about the design of Halloysite stabilized Pickering emulsions. The general aspects about their properties are enlightened by focusing many different factors. Most importantly, the applications of the clay nanotubes stabilized droplets in both technological and industrial fields are considered: from environmental remediation to catalysis, from health science to cultural heritage conservation.

Abstract:Pickering emulsions are emulsions stabilized by colloidal surfactants, i.e. solid particles. Compared with traditional molecular surfactant-stabilized emulsions, Pickering emulsions show many advantages, such as high resistance to coalescence, long-term stability, good biocompatibility and tunable properties. In recent years, Pickering emulsions are widely applied in scientific researches and industrial applications. In this review, we focus on the influences of particle properties on Pickering emulsions, including particle amphiphilicity, concentration, size and shape, and summarize the strategies developed for the preparation of amphiphilic Janus particles. The applications of Pickering emulsions in food industry, cosmetic industry, material science, drug delivery, biomedical research and vaccine adjuvant will also be covered. Pickering emulsions are a unique system for multi-disciplinary studies and will become more and more important in the future.
