Abstract:Single crystals of ferroelectric CaMnTi2O6 double perovskite have been synthetized with high‐pressure methods and their low‐temperature crystal structure and Raman spectroscopic properties have been studied to analyze polarization at the atomic level. We have used high‐pressure methods to synthesize CaMnTi2O6 single crystals with edge lengths of up to 70 μm. Compared to previously reported synthetic pathways, we were able to use gold capsules and smaller pressures of 4 GPa. X‐ray diffraction analysis of the single crystals at low temperatures between 100 and 230 K confirmed that no phase transitions occur in this temperature range. We found square planar‐coordinated Mn ions to shift further out of the plane with lower temperatures which could lead to a higher polarization. The measured Raman spectrum of CaMnTi2O6 has been compared with quantum chemically calculated Raman spectrum to assign the vibrational modes. Calculated single‐crystal Raman spectrum has also been also analyzed from the point of view of direction dependency of the Raman intensities.

Abstract:CaCu3Mn2Te2O12 was synthesized using high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. The compound possesses an A- and B site ordered quadruple perovskite structure in Pn3̅ symmetry with the charge combination of CaCu32+Mn22+Te26+O12. A ferrimagnetic phase transition originating from the antiferromagnetic interaction between A' site Cu2+ and B site Mn2+ ions is found to occur at TC ≈ 100 K. CaCu3Mn2Te2O12 also shows insulating electric conductivity. Optical measurement demonstrates the energy bandgap to be about 1.9 eV, in agreement with the high B site degree of chemical order between Mn2+ and Te6+. The first-principles theoretical calculations confirm the Cu2+(↓)-Mn2+(↑) ferrimagnetic coupling as well as the insulating nature with an up-spin direct bandgap. The current CaCu3Mn2Te2O12 provides an intriguing example of an intrinsic ferrimagnetic insulator with promising applications in advanced spintronic devices.

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and angle dispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies have been carried out on magnesium tantalate (MgTa2O6) up to 41 GPa at room temperature. A pressure-induced phase transition at pressures above 10 GPa accompanied by softening of the internal ν11 (Eg) modes has been observed. Another phase transition took place at 20.2 GPa, which indicates that the edge shared TaO6 octahedra are distorted. The equation of state for MgTa2O6 in low pressure phase I was obtained by the second-order Birch–Murnaghan method, yielding a zero-pressure bulk modulus B0 of 205.8 ± 8.4 GPa. The pressure dependencies of the lattice vibration mode were extracted, and it is suggested that the instability of the trirutile structure at high pressure is related to the strong deformation of the TaO6 octahedra. Decompression measurements suggest that the pressure-induced transformation is irreversible.
A High-Pressure Structural Transition of Norsethite-Type BaFe(CO3)2: Comparison with BaMg(CO3)2 and BaMn(CO3)2

Abstract:Investigations on the phase stability of the norsethite-type family [BaMg(CO3)(2), BaMn(CO3)(2), BaFe(CO3)(2)] under high-pressure conditions are of great significance for understanding the structure and metal cationic (Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+) substitution mechanism in double divalent metal carbonates. The structural evolution and equation of state of BaFe(CO3)(2) were studied at high pressure up to similar to 7.3 GPa by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) in diamond-anvil cell (DAC) in this study. BaFe(CO3)(2) undergoes a reversible phase transition from R (3) over barm (alpha-phase) to C2/c (gamma-phase) space groups at similar to 3.0 GPa. The fitted elastic parameters are V-0 = 377.79(2) angstrom(3) and K-0 = 40.3(7) GPa for alpha-BaFe(CO3)(2), V-0 = 483.24(5) angstrom(3) and K-0 = 91.2(24) GPa for gamma-BaFe(CO3)(2) using second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state (BM(2)EoS). Besides, the vibrational properties and structural stability of complete norsethite-type minerals were also investigated first by Raman spectroscopy combined with DAC up to 11.1 GPa. Similar structural phase transitions occur in BaMg(CO3)(2), BaFe(CO3)(2), BaMn(CO3)(2) at 2.2-2.6, 2.6-3.7, and 3.7-4.1 GPa, respectively. The onset phase transition pressures of the norsethite-type family are much lower than that of dolomite-type Ca(Mg,Fe,Mn)(CO3)(2) and calcite-type (Mg,Fe,Mn)CO3 carbonates. These results provide new insights into the divalent cation substitution effects on the stability and structural evolution of carbonates under high-pressure conditions.

Abstract:The B-site-ordered double-perovskite Pb2NiMoO6 was prepared at high pressure and high temperature. The structural analysis of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data shows that Pb2NiMoO6 crystallizes into monoclinic symmetry with the space group Pc (no. 7), where the Ni and Mo ions are ordered in a rock-salt-type manner. The magnetic and specific heat characterizations reveal unusual two-step antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions at 18 and 26 K for Pb2NiMoO6. The X-ray absorption spectra at the Ni-L 2,3 edge and the Mo-L 3 edge and the high-resolution partial fluorescence yield at the Pb-L 3 edge indicate Pb2+ 2Ni2+Mo6+O6 valence states. Although in A2NiMoO6 (A = Sr2+, Pb2+, and Ba2+), the size of the A cation increases gradually from Sr2+ (1.44 Å) to Pb2+ (1.49 Å) to Ba2+ (1.61 Å), Pb2NiMoO6 exhibits much lower symmetry structure and AFM transition temperature, T N, compared with Sr2NiMoO6 (I4/m, T N = 81 K) and Ba2NiMoO6 (Fm3̅m, T N = 64 K), which is attributed to the large distortion of NiO6 and MoO6 octahedra induced by the lone pair electron effect of Pb2+ with a 6s2 electronic configuration. Moreover, symmetry-breaking phase transition from a high-temperature centrosymmetric, cubic Fm3̅m phase to a low-temperature non-centrosymmetric, monoclinic Pc phase was observed at 393–413 K in Pb2NiMoO6.

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction studies on manganese niobate (MnNb2O6) have been carried out in a diamond anvil cell at room temperature up to 41 GPa. A pressure-induced phase transition was observed at 12 GPa accompanied by the softening of two internal vibration modes v(10)(B-2g) and v(8)(A(g)). Disappearing of most Raman vibration peaks under high pressure reveals that the NbO6 octahedra distort heavily through the transition; this is evidenced by the X-ray diffraction results, but the octahedral units still exist, as the internal Nb-O strengthening vibration is observable even at the highest pressure in this study. The equation of state for MnNb2O6 in low pressure phase I was obtained with third-order Birch-Murnaghan method, yielding a zero-pressure bulk modulus B-0 and its pressure derivative B-0' of 154.4 +/- 3.5 GPa and 4.1, respectively. The volume dependencies of the optical lattice mode frequencies and their respective Griineisen parameters were extracted; it is suggested that the instability of the columbite orthorhombic structure at high pressure is related to the strong deformation of the NbO6 octahedra. Decompression measurements suggest that the pressure-induced transformation is partly reversible.

Abstract:A 10-layer hexagonal perovskite Ba5Sb1-xMn4-1-xOj5-delta solid solution (0.24 <= x <= 0.36; space group P6(3)/mmc, a = 5.7095(1) angstrom, and c = 23.4866(3) angstrom for x = 0.36) has been synthesized by solid state reaction and studied using powder X-ray and neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. This 10H polytype structure contains one corner-sharing (Sb,Mn)O-6 octahedron and a tetramer of four face-sharing MnO6 octahedra per formula unit. Two magnetic transitions are observed at 129-167 K (T-M) and 13-22 K (T-F). The frustration index vertical bar theta vertical bar/T-M, where theta is the Weiss temperature, is very close to unity, but considerable magnetic frustration is evidenced through the long-range order of a small similar to 0.5 mu B antiferromatznetic moment below T-M, and the formation of ferro- or ferrimagnetic clusters. These freeze at T-F with the vertical bar theta vertical bar/T-F approximate to -10 index representing high magnetic frustration. T(F)increases directly with the excess of Mn,x, in Ba5Sb1-xMn4+xO15-delta rather than with the overall Mn content, showing that the occupation of the corner-sharing Sb/Mn sites is key to the extended magnetism.

Abstract:Many AB2O4 spinels transform to post-spinel structures without decomposition.Three structures of CaMn2O4 (Pmab), CaFe2O4 (Pnam) and CaTi2O4 (Bbmm) have been reported as post-spinel phases.Structure studies were conducted under high pressure using SR.CaMn2O4 transforms to CaTi2O4 type structure at about 30GPa.MnO6 octahedron is distorted by the Jahn-Teller effect induced from Mn 3+ (3d4) in the octahedral site.X-ray emission study at APS has been executed to discloses high-low spin transition of CaMn2O4 up to 100GPa.The spin transition gradually proceeds from 50GPa and then mixed spin states at 80GPa.Low-spin state is confirmed at 85GPa.A new phase is found by powder diffraction at 82 GPa.This structure (Pnam) is produced via martensic transformation by displacing atoms in every three layers perpendicular to the c-axis.Four independent sites of Mn atoms yield the different spin transition pressures.PbTiO3 tetragonal perovskite structure (P4mm) at ambient conditions transforms cubic (Pm3m) at about 12GPa, which induces the transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric.Electron density distribution analysis is performed by maximum entropy method (MEM) using single-crystal diffraction intensities up to 12GPa taken at PF and up to 35GPa by two-circle diffractometer with IP at APS. Pressure dependence of the static dipole moment is elucidated by charge density analysis.MEM provides the split atom model of Ti and oxygen atoms in the direction to the c-axis and in the cubic phase no more splitting was observed.The split is generated from the statistical distribution of atoms or domain structures.The split becomes gradually smaller with increasing pressure.This is an intrinsic phenomenon in PbTiO3.Polarization in PbTiO3 is partly canceled.
The Electronic and Structural Properties in Ca 2 TiMnO 6 Double Perovskite: the First Principle Study

Abstract:We studied the crystal structure of double perovskite Ca2TiMnO6 using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We used the atomic positions given by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, in order to create a primitive lattice cell structure using visualization software Material Studio. Such sophisticated structure was found in tetragonal perovskite system, with space group with I4/m (#87) and lattice parameter of a = b = c = 5.32 angstrom. The exchange-correlation potential was treated with the Local Density Approximation (LDA) method. The calculations were performed with spin-polarization. The bandgaps for up-spin, net zero and down-spin were reported to be 1.051 eV, 0.988 eV and 1.806 eV respectively. The magnetic element Mn had an impact in tuning the bandstructure when the spin was induced. In summary, this double perovskite emits light when at the down spin state. The energy bandgap is opened, by 63 meV from net zero spin state to the up-spin state. Also, the PDOS illustration explains the reasons behind the changes in the bandstructure, between the up-spin, down-spin and net-zero spin, due to the shifts in the 3 d(5) orbital states. Abstract:Low-temperature reduction of perovskite Tb0.5Ca0.5MnO3-x yields novel crystal-structured noncentrosymmetric compound Tb0.50Ca0.50Mn0.962.33+O2.37, which unusually crystallizes in cubic lattice I23 (a similar to 15.27 angstrom) based on a 4a(p) x 4a(p) x 4a(p) expansion relative to the simple cubic perovskite unit cell. Rietveld refinements and HAADF-STEM images are used for the structure determination, revealing a rare-typed metal-anion coordination framework which consists of corner-shared tetrahedra and pyramids, and edge-shared bipyramids and octahedra. 2/64 B-site Mn-ordered vacancies are observed for the first time acting as the apex and body center of the I lattice in reduced systems. Room-temperature piezoelectricity is detected, with a quasistatic d(33) value of similar to 0.32 pC N-1 and inverse d(33) value of similar to 10.5 pm V-1. This phase primarily exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering below T-N similar to 70 K, with ferromagnetic responses resulted from spin-canting below 40 K. This work provides a new way toward synthesizing unconventional acentric materials, in the absence of second-order Jahn-Teller active "distortion centers".

Abstract:A new oxide, LaMn3Co2Mn2O12, was synthesized under high-pressure (7 GPa) and high-temperature (1423 K) conditions. The compound crystallizes in an AA′3B4O12-type quadruple perovskite structure with space group Im3̅. The Rietveld structural analysis combined with soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the charge combination to be LaMn3+3Co2+2Mn4+2O12, where the La3+ and Mn3+ are 1:3 ordered respectively at the A and A′ sites, whereas the Co2+ and Mn4+ are disorderly distributed at the B site. This is in sharp contrast to R2Co2+Mn4+O6 (R = La and rare earth) double perovskites, in which the Co2+ and Mn4+ charge states are always orderly distributed with a rocksalt-type fashion, giving rise to a long-range magnetic ordering. As a result, LaMn3Co2Mn2O12 displays spin glassy magnetic properties due to the random Co2+ and Mn4+ distribution, as demonstrated by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility as well as specific heat measurements. Possible factors that affect the B-site degree of order in perovskite structures are discussed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Effects of iron substitution and anti-site disorder on crystal structures, vibrational, optical and magnetic properties of double perovskites Sr2(Fe1- xNix)TeO6

Abstract:The double-perovskite series, Sr2(Fe1-xNix)TeO6 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) has been synthesized in polycrystalline form by solid-state reaction at 1300 K in air. Their crystal structures were probed by powder X-ray diffraction at room temperature. Rietveld analysis revealed that all samples crystallize in the monoclinic space group I2/m. The double-perovskite structures ideally contain two alternating types of octahedra (Fe/Ni)2dO6 and (Te)2aO6, tilted in the system (a-a-c0). However, the refinements have shown a complex distribution of all three cations over the two available octahedral sites; 2d (½, ½, 0) and 2a (0, 0, 0). Raman spectroscopy further complements the obtained results, by revealing a tiny increase of the wavenumber of some Raman modes when Fe is substituted by Ni. The optical characteristics of the series were determined by fitting diffuse reflectance UV/Vis spectra enabling the optical band gaps to be derived from Tauc method and derivation of absorption spectra fitting (DASF) techniques. Analyses of the obtained 57Fe Mössbauer hyperfine parameters at room temperature of samples with compositions x = 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 reveal the presence of Fe3+ in high-spin state with an anti-site disorder of Fe-Ni-Te cations in distorted octahedral environments (site 2d and 2a). The results show that significant correlations exist between the crystal structures and physical properties of double perovskites containing B site transition elements of different charge and size. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility data show magnetic transitions below 40(1) K (38(1) K, 31(1) K, 25(1) K, 20(1) K, and 35(1) K for x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1, respectively. A divergence between FC and ZFC curves for all compositions has been observed. The results show that the ground states of the doped materials might be spin glasses or magnetically ordered.
MnCaTa2O7-A Magnetically Ordered Polar Phase Prepared via Cation Exchange

Abstract:Reaction between the pseudo-Ruddlesden-Popper phase Li2CaTa2O7 and MnCl2 at 375 °C yields MnCaTa2O7, a paramagnetic polar phase (space group P21nm), which adopts an a-b-c+/b-a-c+ distorted, layered perovskite structure. Magnetization and neutron diffraction data show that MnCaTa2O7 adopts an antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN = 56 K and exhibits large lattice parameter anomalies and a transient increase in its polar distortion mode at TA = 50 K. However, in contrast to the related phase MnSrTa2O7, MnCaTa2O7 shows no strong signature of weak ferromagnetism and thus shows no signs of magnetoelectric coupling. The differences in physical behavior between the two MnATa2O7 phases appear to be related to their differing Mn cation-order and differing TaO6 tilting schemes and demonstrate that even subtle changes to these orderings can have large effects on the distortion-mode couplings, which drive complex behavior of this class of "hybrid improper" ferroelectric material.

Abstract:We have used high-pressure synthesis to synthesize samples of Ca 2- x Mn x Ti 2 O 6 double perovskite, where x varies between 0.2 and 1. The synthesized materials were structurally characterized with powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Rietveld refinement of the XRD patterns was used to study the change from CaTiO 3 ( x = 0) to the composition CaMnTi 2 O 6 ( x = 1) where half of the Ca(II) ions are replaced by smaller Mn(II) ions. We analyzed the peak shapes in the XRD patterns, as well as lattice parameters, and it appears that smooth symmetry change from the centrosymmetric space group Pbnm to the non-centrosymmetric space group P 4 2 mc happens between x = 0.3 and x = 0.5. We also confirmed the centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric transition by characterizing the dielectric properties of the materials with ferroelectric measurements.

Structural and magnetic properties of double perovskites Ca2FeMn1−xCrxO6 (x = 0.06 and 0.12)

Abstract:The structural and magnetic properties of single-phase polycrystalline Ca 2 FeMn 1−x Cr x O 6 ( x = 0.06 and 0.12) double perovskites were thoroughly investigated in this study. The samples were prepared using a simple solid-state synthesis process. Rietveld analysis of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed a monoclinic structure with a P2 1 /c space group for all samples. Several parameters, such as microstrain, density, and crystallite size were computed. Additionally, microstructure analysis showed random geometric morphologies of the grains. To determine the magnetic characteristics of these double perovskites, a temperature-dependent magnetization experiment was conducted at a magnetic field of μ 0 H = 0.01T. Antiferromagnetic (AFM)-paramagnetic (PM) transitions were observed in the samples, with Neel temperatures of around T N = 36.40 K and 36.13 K for x = 0.06 and 0.12, respectively. Both compounds exhibit spin glass behavior. Antiferromagnetic (AFM), ferromagnetic (FM), and ferrimagnetic (FiM) ordering were among the various magnetic exchange interactions present in the system, leading to a complex magnetic response below the Neel temperature T N . The exchange bias in the compounds contributed to the FiM and FM moment exchange coupling at the antiphase boundaries of AFM ordering. The findings on the exchange bias effect in these materials have significant technical implications for practical applications.

Abstract:Dy2CuZnMn4O12 perovskite, belonging to the A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskite family with the general composition of A2A'A″B4O12, was prepared by a high-pressure, high-temperature method at 6 GPa and 1500 K. Its crystal structure was studied by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction between 100 and 800 K. The ideal cation distribution (without antisite disorder) was found to be realized within the sensitivity of the synchrotron X-ray diffraction method. Between 100 and 400 K, it crystallizes in space group Pmmn (no. 59) and has layered charge ordering of Mn3+ and Mn4+ at the B sites. Above 425 K, it crystallizes in space group P42/nmc (no. 137) with one crystallographic B site and an average Mn3.5+ oxidation state. The charge ordering transition (at TCO = 425 K) appears to be of the second order as no anomalies were found on differential scanning calorimetry curves and temperature dependence of the unit cell volume, and the orthorhombic a and b lattice parameters merge gradually. The compound demonstrates anisotropic thermal expansion with the c lattice parameter decreasing with increasing temperature above 280 K. A ferrimagnetic transition occurs at TC = 116 K with an additional, gradual rise of magnetic susceptibilities below 45 K, probably due to increases of the ordered moments of the Dy sublattices.
Pressure-Induced Phase Transition in Mn(Ta,Nb)2O6: an Experimental Investigation and First-Principle Study.

Abstract:The high-pressure and high-temperature behaviors of manganotantalite Mn(Ta,Nb)(2)O-6 have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy combined with diamond anvil cell technique, as well as first-principle calculations. A pressure-induced reversible phase transition of manganotantalite occurs at 9.5 GPa and room temperature, accompanied by a large volume collapse (similar to 7.0%) and drastic color change from brownish-yellow to red. The space groups of low-pressure (LP) and highpressure (HP) phases are the same (Pbcn), but the coordination numbers of Mn increase from six to eight and Ta increase from six to seven, respectively. The band gap becomes narrow from 2.37 to 1.59 eV. We determined the P-T phase diagram of manganotantalite with a positive Clapeyron slope of dP/dT = 0.0073 GPa/K. The P-V data were fitted to a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with B-0 = 149(4) GPa for the LP phase and B-0 = 188(3) GPa for the HP phase. The isothermal Gruneisen parameters were determined to be 0.23 similar to 2.03 of the LP phase and 0.59 similar to 0.86 of the HP phase for Raman modes. High-pressure behaviors of Mn(Ta,Nb)(2)O-6 indicate that this kind of material is a potential effective pressure sensor to monitor pressure change or warn pressure abnormality.

Abstract:Polar and magnetic Mn2MnMoO6 with a Ni3TeO6-type structure (R3) was synthesized at 1673 K under 8 GPa. Mn2MnMoO6 shows a large spontaneous polarization of 65.76 μC·cm–2, two magnetic transitions at 19 and 47 K, and a strong magnetic frustration factor (f) of 18.4. The polarization reversal barrier is estimated to be 232 meV. X-ray absorption spectroscopy established Mn22+Mn2+Mo6+O6 formal oxidation states. Theoretical calculations indicate an antiferromagnetic ground state of up–down–up–down–up–down spin alignment for Mn ions and a semiconductor characteristic with a band gap around 1.06 eV. Abstract:We report a single crystal neutron and x-ray diffraction study of the hybrid improper multiferroic Ca3Mn1.9Ti0.1O7 (CMTO), a prototypical system where the electric polarization arises from the condensation of two lattice distortion modes. With increasing temperature (T), the out-of-plane, antiphase tilt of MnO6 decreases in amplitude while the in-plane, in-phase rotation remains robust and experiences abrupt changes across the first-order structural transition. Application of hydrostatic pressure (P) to CMTO at room temperature shows a similar effect. The consistent behavior under both T and P reveals the softness of antiphase tilt and highlights the role of the partially occupied d orbital of the transition-metal ions in determining the stability of the octahedral distortion. Polarized neutron analysis indicates the symmetry-allowed canted ferromagnetic moment is less than the 0.04 mu(B)/Mn site, despite a substantial out-of-plane tilt of the MnO6 octahedra.
