Abstract:Utilizing the electrical resonance method, matrices encompassing elastic, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties were calculated for 0.36BiScO3-0.64PbTiO3 (BSPT) ceramics. The design parameters for the BSPT/epoxy 2-2 composite material were meticulously elucidated through simulations conducted via COMSOL software. Characterization outcomes unveil that the synthesized composite material exhibits diminished acoustic impedance and heightened electromechanical coupling in comparison to its piezoelectric ceramic counterparts. Subsequent to the design and fabrication of ultrasonic transducers employing both BSPT ceramics and BSPT/epoxy 2-2 composite material, a thorough investigation into their electrical and acoustic attributes ensued at ambient temperature and 200 °C. Test results manifest that the BSPT/epoxy 2-2 composite high temperature ultrasonic transducer (CHTUT) demonstrates a center frequency and bandwidth of 4.52 MHz and 54.71%, respectively, at room temperature. While, at 200 °C, these parameters are 3.54 MHz and 80.79%. The HTUT, under parallel scrutiny, exhibits a center frequency and bandwidth of 4.65 MHz and 34.23% at room temperature, respectively, and 4.52 MHz and 29.65% at 200 °C. These findings prove the robust ultrasonic performance of the CHTUT, even under elevated temperatures, with the BSPT ceramic based counterpart demonstrating superior temperature stability. Furthermore, the results of an imaging experiment involving steel step blocks at both room temperature and 200 °C align consistently with the acoustic test outcomes.

High-Frequency 0.36BiScO3-0.64PbTiO3 Ultrasonic Transducer for High-Temperature Imaging Application

Abstract:( 1- x )BiScO3- x PbTiO3 (BS-PT) ceramics have excellent piezoelectricity and high Curie temperature at its morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) ( x = 0.64 ), so it is a promising piezoelectric material for fabricating high-temperature ultrasonic transducer (HTUT). Electric properties of 0.36BS-0.64PT ceramics were characterized at different temperatures, and an HTUT with the center frequency of about 15 MHz was designed by PiezoCAD based on the measuring results. The prepared HTUT was tested in a silicone oil bath at different temperatures systematically. The test results show that the HTUT can maintain a stable electrical resonance until 290 °C and get a clear echo response until 250 °C with slight changes of the center frequency. Then, a stepped metal block submerged in silicone oil was imaged by the HTUT until 250 °C. Velocity of silicone oil and axial resolution of the HTUT at different temperatures was calculated. The results verify the capability of 0.36BS-0.64PT-based HTUT for high-temperature ultrasonic imaging applications.

Abstract:A technique was developed to evaluate the degree of embolization distal to arterial occlusion by transcatheter electrocoagulation (TCEC) and Gianturco coils. The kidneys of mongrel dogs were used to collect emboli distal to conventional TCEC or Gianturco coil occlusion of the renal arteries. TCEC controls (TCEC setup without current), normal kidneys, kidneys embolized with autologous clot, and kidneys whose renal arteries were surgically ligated were evaluated for comparison. The renal vasculature was flushed and then fixed by glutaraldehyde infusion. The kidneys were filled with a barium gelatin mixture and examined both radiographically and pathologically. The four normal kidneys and the four ligated kidneys gave a characteristic complete filling of the vascular web, while filling defects were evident in the following conditions: 3/12 TCEC controls; 26/34 with TCEC occlusion; 6/10 with Gianturco coils; and 11/11 with autologous clot. An excellent correlation existed between radiographic intraluminal filling defects and grossly and microscopically identified emboli.

Abstract:1–3 piezoelectric composites are widely used in piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers due to their high thickness electromechanical coupling factor. However, the applications of the composites in high‐temperature fields are limited by the low heat resistance of both the piezoelectric and polymer phases. To tackle this, we designed and fabricated the BiScO3–PbTiO3/epoxy high‐temperature 1–3 piezoelectric composites. These composites exhibit a high thickness electromechanical coupling factor kt of 63%, a large piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 470 pC/N, and a pure thickness vibration mode. Furthermore, we fabricated a high‐temperature transducer based on the BiScO3–PbTiO3/epoxy 1–3 composites. The bandwidths of the composites measured in water and silicone oil (30% and 23%, respectively) are approximately 1.65 times greater than those of monolithic piezoelectric ceramics (18% and 14%, respectively). The bandwidth of the transducer can be increased to 78% by adding a porous alumina backing layer, with the working temperature reaching up to 300°C. The results indicate that the BS–PT/epoxy 1–3 composite is a potential candidate for high‐temperature transducer applications.

Abstract:(Ba0.85Ca0.15) (Hf0.10Ti0.90)O3 (BCHT) ceramics were prepared via the powder injection molding process using paraffin as simple injection binder. Rather pure perovskite BCHT ceramics are obtained sintered at different temperatures, and complex multi-ferroelectric phases coexistence is confirmed by XRD measurement. Although the relative density is around 90%, well densified microstructural morphology is obtained without detectable gas pores. Curie temperature (TC) and dielectric constant maximum (εm) change irregularly with sintering temperature, and the BCHT ceramics present complex ferroelectric nature. All the ceramics show easy polarization characteristic, and the 1540 °C sintered BCHT ceramics present the largest piezoelectric constant d33 = 554.6 pC/N. Thickness mode ultrasonic transducer was fabricated based on the 1450 °C sintered BCHT ceramics, where the bandwidth @-6 dB (BW-6 dB) is 56.25% and sensitivity is −31.867 dB. PiezoCAD software simulation data present good agreement with the experimental results, showing promising applications for non-destructive testing using the BCHT lead-free ceramics.
Composition Design of PMN-PH-PT Piezoelectric Ceramics for High-Temperature Actuator Applications

Abstract:High-Curie temperature (T-m) piezoelectric ceramics 0.15Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-xPbHfO(3)-(0.85-x)PbTiO3 (0.15PMN-xPH-(0.85-x)PT, x = 0.36, 0.38, 0.39, 0.40, 0.42, 0.15PMN-PH-PT) were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method via the columbite precursor route. The synthesized 0.15PMN-PH-PT ceramics exhibit pure perovskite structure with compositions locate near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), where the rhombohedral phase and the tetragonal phase coexist. The sintered samples present high densification, in which the 0.15Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.38PbHfO(3)-0.47PbTiO(3) (0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT) ceramics present the highest relative density, being 97.76%. The dielectric performance-temperature curves measured at different frequencies, the Curie-Weiss law fitting and the quadratic law fitting indicate that the ferroelectric phase transition from ferroelectric phase to paraelectric phase occurred at T-0 in the 0.15PMN-PH-PT ceramics is driven by the displacive phase transition, and the 0.15PMN-PH-PT ceramics belong to normal ferroelectrics with diffused phase transition characteristic. Due to the MPB effect and high relative density, the 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics exhibit the best integral electrical properties, excellent thermal stability and large electric field induced strain, which present prospect promising for actuator applications under elevated environmental temperatures.
Piezoelectricity in Excess of 800 pC/N over 400 °C in BiScO 3 –PbTiO 3 –CaTiO 3 Ceramics

Abstract:Ultrasonic sensors are widely applied in industries near room temperature; however, their application at high temperature is still a challenge mainly due to the lack of high-performance piezoelectric ceramics. Here, the 0.364BiScO3–0.636PbTiO3–0.005CaTiO3 ceramic exhibits excellent piezoelectric performances at 20–440 °C. Its piezoelectric coefficient d33 increases from 475 pC/N at 20 °C to 853 pC/N at 360 °C, and then it gradually decreases to 669 pC/N at 440 °C. Furthermore, the planar electromechanical coupling factor kp gradually increases from 0.59 at 20 °C to 0.67 at 200 °C, and then it remains at a stable value of 0.65–0.67 at 150–350 °C. These achievements are because the ceramic morphotropic phase boundaries have a flat Gibbs free energy versus polarization curve and a wide temperature range. High temperature ultrasonic transducers for imaging and measurements in a liquid Pb/Bi eutectic alloy

Abstract:In some nuclear reactors or accelerator-driven systems (ADS) the core is intended to be cooled by means of a heavy liquid metal, for example, lead-bismuth (Pb/Bi) eutectic alloy. For safety and licensing reasons, an imaging method of the interior of ADS, based on application of ultrasonic waves, has thus to be developed. This paper is devoted to description of developed various ultrasonic transducers suitable for long term imaging and measurements in the liquid Pb/Bi alloy. The results of comparative experimental investigations of the developed transducers of different designs in a liquid Pb/Bi alloy up to 450 degrees C are presented. Prototypes with different high temperature piezoelectric materials were investigated: PZT, bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12), lithium niobate (LiNbO3), gallium orthophosphate (GaPO4) and aluminum nitride (A1N). For acoustic coupling with the metal alloy, it was proposed to coat the active surface of the transducers by diamond like carbon (DLC). The radiation robustness was assessed by exposing the transducers to high gamma dose rates in one of the irradiation facilities at SCK x CEN. The experimental results proved that the developed transducers are suitable for long-term operation in harsh conditions.

Abstract:To develop an ultrasonic transducer for non-destructive testing, PNN-PZT-PMW-system ceramics were manufactured using the columbite method. The microstructural, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties of these ceramics were investigated. For the specimen sintered at 920 ◦ C, the dielectric constant (ε r ), piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) planar electromechanical coupling factor(k p ), mechanical quality factor(Q m ), and piezoelectric voltage constant(g 33 ) were 1,773, 465[pC/N], 0.62, 44 and 29.6[mV⋅m/N], respectively, with a high Curie temperature (T c ) of 295 ◦ C. These values are suitable for application of the ceramics to devices such as ultrasonic transducers. Ultrasonic transducers with ceramics of various dimensions were manufactured using the developed composition, and their electrical properties were investigated. The Ut-1 ultrasonic transducer was most suitable for detecting defects in concrete because its maximum sensitivity at 29.41 kHz was 87.32 dB and its sensitivity at 50 kHz was 65.99 dB.
Enhancing Electrical Properties of High-Curie Temperature Piezoelectric Ceramics BNT-PZT and Their Mechanism

Abstract:Due to the urgent demands for high-Curie temperature (T-C/T-m) piezoelectric materials in geothermal exploration, aerospace and related fields, high-T-C/T-m ferroelectrics have attracted booming research attention. The high-T-m 0.25Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O-3-0.75 Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O-3 (0.25BNT-0.75PZT) ceramics were prepared by solid-state sintering method and via partial oxalate route, where the 0.25BNT-0.75PZT ceramics prepared via the partial oxalate route exhibit better electrical properties (T-m = 232 degrees C (10 kHz), epsilon(m) = 10963, P-r = 26.14 mu C/cm(2), E-c = 15.61 kV/cm, d(33) = 521 pC/N, d(33)* = 553.3 pm/V, K-p = 47.1%, and Q(m) = 21.6). The nano-scale domain configuration of the ceramics was revealed by piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM), and the relationship between the micro-structure and macro-electrical properties was analyzed. The ferroelectric phase transition mechanism was studied by temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy. The reduction of energy barrier of lattice distortion and polarization deflection is caused by nanometer-sized domain structure, low symmetric polar nano-regions and/or coexistence of multi-ferroelectric phases, contributing to the excellent electrical properties of the 0.25BNT-0.75PZT ceramics prepared via the partial oxalate route.

Abstract:Bismuth layer-structured CaBi4Ti3.925(Nb2/3Mn1/3)0.075O15 (CBTNM) piezoelectric ceramics have been prepared using stereolithography (SL) technology. The effects of various solid contents (76–82wt%) of CBTNM ceramics on the slurry viscosity, phase structure, microstructure, and electric performance were studied in detail. At a solid content of 82wt%, the ceramic exhibits good piezoelectric properties. The piezoelectric constant d33, thickness-mode electromechanical coupling coefficient kt, and Curie temperature Tc were 21 pC/N, 47%, and 790 °C, respectively. The piezoelectric constant of the ceramic has a good stability up to 500 °C. Furthermore, a high-temperature ultrasound transducer was designed and fabricated based on the CBTNM ceramic, and its pulse-echo performance was characterized from room temperature (RT) to 250 °C. The pulse-echo performance indicates that the −6 dB bandwidth and echo amplitude of the transducer decrease slightly, but still work normally up to 250 °C. These results indicate that the transducer fabricated based on CBTNM ceramics has potential in high-temperature testing applications.

Abstract:Lead-free environmentally friendly piezoelectrical materials with enhanced piezoelectric properties are of great significance for high-resolution ultrasound imaging applications. In this paper, Na0.5Bi4.5Ti3.86Mn0.06Nb0.08O15+y (NBT-Nb-Mn) bismuth-layer-structured ceramics were prepared by solid-phase synthesis. The crystallographic structure, micromorphology, and piezoelectrical and electromechanical properties of NBT-Nb-Mn ceramics were examined, showing their enhanced piezoelectricity (d33 = 33 pC/N) and relatively high electromechanical coupling coefficient (kt = 0.4). The purpose of this article is to describe the development of single element ultrasonic transducers based on these piezoelectric ceramics. The as-prepared high-frequency tightly focused transducer (ƒ-number = 1.13) had an electromechanical coupling coefficient of 0.48. The center frequency was determined to be 37.4 MHz and the −6 dB bandwidth to be 47.2%. According to the B-mode imaging experiment of 25 μm tungsten wires, lateral resolution of the transducer was calculated as 56 μm. Additionally, the experimental results were highly correlated to the results simulated by COMSOL software. By scanning a coin, the imaging effect of the transducer was further evaluated, demonstrating the application advantages of the prepared transducer in the field of high-sensitivity ultrasound imaging.

Abstract:High Curie temperature (TC) xBi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3-(1-x)Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (xBNT-(1-x)PZT, BNT-PZT) piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The composition-induced morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its influences on structure and electrical performance were investigated. The synthesized BNT-PZT ceramics exhibit rather pure perovskite structure, and densified microstructure morphology with uniform elementals distribution in both grains and grain boundaries. With increasing the content of Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3 (BNT), crystal structure of the BNT-PZT ceramics transform from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase, and dielectric response peaks change from narrow shape to very broad shape but all presenting dielectric frequency dispersion. The diffused and relaxation dielectric behavior can be fitted well by the quadratic law, and the Vogel-Fulcher law fitting provides additional information on the relaxation characteristic. The MPB effects are confirmed further by ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties measurements. High-TC combined with excellent piezoelectric performance can be realized in the BNT-PZT system, which presents promising applications in geothermal exploration, aerospace and related elevated temperatures fields.

Abstract:BiScO3-PbTiO3 (BS-PT) has the high Curie temperature and excellent piezoelectric activity, and has the potential to fabricate high-performance piezoelectric devices. However, the fabrication of one-dimensional BS-PT piezoelectric sensor remains a great challenge. Here, pure phase BS-PT nanofibers are proposed and experimentally demonstrated by optimizing the concentration of the electrospinning additive and the sintering temperature, and the interdigital electrodes are combined to assemble the sensor. The BS-PT nanofibers piezoelectric sensor can maintain a stable sensitivity above 4 V/N in the range of 10–40 Hz at 60–200 °C. In addition, it has a nearly linear output voltage as the excitation pressure increases ranging from 0.07 N to 0.55 N in the range of 160–260 °C, and the sensitivity at 220 °C is still higher than 5.4 V/N. These results highlight the BS-PT nanofibers piezoelectric sensor is promising to be used for high-temperature pressure and vibration measurements.

Abstract:The main challenge to maintain high-temperature performance of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices is to improve the high-temperature resistance of the interdigital transducers (IDT). This work reports on the development of the Pt-Rh alloy-based multilayered composite IDTs for high-temperature applications. Composite electrode-based wire-type resistors with different structures were prepared by magnetron sputtering, and their resistances and surface morphologies at temperatures up to 1600 degrees C were investigated. The proposed composite electrode has a structure of ZrO2 /Pt-Rh (10%) /Al2O3 /Pt-Rh (10%) /Al2O3 with a 40 nm ZrO2 protective layer at the top of the electrode. It has a 300 nm thickness Pt-Rh (10%) film, a 10 nm Al2O3 layer in the middle of Pt-Rh (10%) layer, and a 20 nm Al2O3 layer between the electrode and the substrate. The results showed that the composite electrodes could withstand a maximum operating temperature up to 1600 degrees C in air. The electrodes maintained excellent stability even after five cyclic thermal treatments at temperatures up to 1200 degrees C for one hour, and good stability after two cyclic thermal treatments up to 1400 degrees C for 1 h. The SAW devices based on AlN single-crystal piezoelectric film using the composite electrodes showed good stability at 1200 degrees C for 1 h.
Improved in situ high temperature piezoelectric performance of BiScO3-PbTiO3-Pb(Sn1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics for actuator applications

Abstract:In this paper, new series of high temperature piezoelectric ceramics consisting of (0.975-x)BiScO3-xPbTiO3-0.025 Pb(Sn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (BS-xPT-0.025PSN), have been fabricated and investigated in detail. The phase structure analysis and electrical properties characterization at room temperature demonstrate the MPB composition is BS-0.62PT-0.025PSN with the optimum piezoelectric performance (d 33 523 pC/N, large-signal d 33 * 734 p.m./V, and k p 54.6%), which are superior than the unmodified BS-PT ceramics. Interestingly, the in situ electromechanical coupling properties exhibits good stability with the variation lower 5% as the temperature increasing from room temperature to 300 °C and the d 33 * reaches the maxima of 1413 p.m./V at 200 °C, and remains 743 p.m./V even at 300 °C, showing the BS-0.62PT-0.025PSN ceramics potential for high temperature piezoelectric actuator application together with the Curie temperature of 418 °C and the high temperature annealing stabilities. Then a 10-layer stack-type piezoelectric actuator was designed and fabricated based on the BS-0.62PT-0.025PSN ceramics, which can be operated steadily up to 200 °C and produces a displacement of 24 μm under the driven electric field. The maximum displacement 32.4 μm of the actuator was obtained at the testing temperature of 150 °C, far more than that of the value at the room temperature. The BS-0.62 PT-PSN ceramics and their stack-type piezoelectric actuator maybe a strong supplement to satisfy the urgent demand for high temperature piezoelectric actuator.

Abstract:Large piezoelectric voltage coefficient (g 33) and figure of merit (FOM 33) are the key parameters of perovskite ceramics for piezoelectric sensors and energy harvesters. Here, the Bi(Zn2/3Nb1/3)O3 (BZN) member with a low tolerance factor is introduced into the BiScO3-PbTiO3 (BS-PT) perovskite high-temperature piezoelectric matrix to decouple the piezoelectric coefficient (d 33) and dielectric constant (ε r) by modulating the morphotropic phase boundary and grain size. For the optimal 0.38BS-0.01BZN-0.61PT ceramic that benefits from the decoupling of d 33 and ε r, its Curie temperature, g 33 and FOM 33 are as high as 436 °C, 38.6 mV·m·N−1 and 16.5×10−12 m2·N−1, respectively. Furthermore, the 0.38BS-0.01BZN-0.61PT ceramic also shows the technical advantages of large g 33 and FOM 33 even at harsh elevated temperatures (≥ 200 °C). Due to its outstanding comprehensive performances above, the 0.38BS-0.01BZN-0.61PT ceramic surpasses many other BS-PT-based piezoceramics. These results demonstrate that the 0.38BS-0.01BZN-0.61PT material is a promising competitor for high-temperature electromechanical coupling applications.

Abstract:In order to improve the maximum operating temperature of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, the major challenge comes from the bearing capacity of the thin film electrode at high temperature. Traditional pure metal such as Pt and Ir are prone to oxidation, agglomeration and recrystallization in high temperature environment. In this paper, Pt-Rh thin films were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) at extremely high temperature, which verified that Pt-Rh has excellent high temperature resistance. Therefore, Pt-Rh was used as the electrode layer material, and a resistance wire of 5μm width was designed and fabricated to imitate the interdigital transducer (IDT) of SAW device. The change of resistance value of the film electrode prepared with different electrode layer structure and different passivation protection layer at high temperature were observed by four-line method. A new ZrO 2 /Pt-Rh(10%)/Al 2 O 3 /Pt-Rh(10%)/Al 2 O 3 composite thin film electrode is proposed. The maximum operating temperature can reach 1600°C and can work stably for 0.93h at 1500°C. This is of great significance for the preparation of high temperature SAW devices.

Abstract:High-temperature piezoelectric devices require piezoelectric ceramics with high Curie temperatures and high-temperature stability of piezoelectric properties to avoid the depolarization of piezoelectric ceramics during application. However, piezoelectric materials with high Curie temperatures usually have restrained piezoelectric properties. Crystallographic orientation via texture engineering is a practicable way to improve piezoelectric performance. Here, we propose a sintering-aid-assisted template grain growth strategy to texture BiScO3-PbTiO3 ceramics to overcome the low orientation issue that challenges the texturing of BS-PT for decades. By judiciously selecting B2O3-CuO as sintering aids, we fabricated highly ⟨001⟩-textured 0.43BS-0.57PT ceramics with Logtering factors >99.0% that possess high piezoelectric coefficients d33 of 474–612 pC/N while maintaining relatively high Curie temperatures of 370–402 °C. Importantly, this work addresses a long-standing issue presented in BS-PT ceramics, i.e., the low electromechanical coupling property of BS-PT ceramics (k33 < 0.70) by improving the electromechanical coupling factor k33 to 81.2%. The newly designed textured BS-PT ceramics are thought to be promising candidates for the design of high-temperature piezoelectric transducers and actuators.

Abstract:Owing to the mutual restriction between piezoelectric coefficient (d33) and Curie temperature (Tc), the discovery of high-temperature piezoceramics with large d33 is highly desirable but challenging. Here, BiFeO3-BaTiO3-PbTiO3 (BF-BT-PT) ternary system is redesigned by combining the low lattice distortion of BF-BT perovskites and rhombohedral-tetragonal coexistence of BF-PT phase boundary. As a result, excellent comprehensive piezoelectric properties with a large d33 of ∼380 pC/N and a high Tc of ∼483 °C are obtained in a tetragonal composition close to the triple point. Interestingly, even though a c/a ratio as large as 1.04 can be detected in the virgin sample, hierarchical domains that macrodomains composed of nanosized stripe domains can be found. The tetragonal phase could partly transform into a monoclinic phase under electric field according to in-situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurement, constructing a field-induced morphotropic phase boundary. The large lattice distortion and unstable phase structure simultaneously contribute to the high Tc, and large d33 for the studied BF-BT-PT ceramics, respectively, showing great potential for high-temperature sensors and transducers.
