Abstract:Observations of superconductivity and charge density waves (CDW) in graphene have been elu sive thus far due to weak electron-phonon coupling (EPC) interactions. Here, we report a unique observation of anomalous transport and multiple charge ordering phases at high temperatures (T1 ∼ 213K, T2 ∼ 325K) in a 0D−2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure comprising of single layer graphene (SLG) and functionalized (amine) graphene quantum dots (GQD). The presence of functionalized GQD contributed to charge transfer with shifting of the Dirac point ∼ 0.05 eV above the Fermi level (ab-initio simulations) and carrier density n ∼ −0.3 × 1012cm−2 confirming p-doping in SLG and two-fold increase in EPC interaction was achieved. Moreover, we elucidate the interplay between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions to substantiate high temperature EPC driven charge ordering in the heterostructure through analyses of magnetotransport and weak anti-localization (WAL) framework. Our results provide impetus to investigate strongly correlated phenomena such as CDW and superconducting phase transitions in novel graphene based heterostructures.

Graphene is widely employed as a heteroepitaxial substrate for the growth of TMD layers and as an ohmic contact, where the graphene/TMD heterostructure is naturally formed. The presence of graphene can unpredictably influence the CDW order in 2D CDW conductors. This work reports the CDW transitions of 2H‐NbSe2 layers in graphene/NbSe2 heterostructures. The evolution of Raman spectra demonstrates that the CDW phase transition temperatures (TCDW) of NbSe2 are dramatically decreased when capped by graphene. The induced anomalous short‐range CDW state is confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. The findings propose a new criterion to determine the TCDW through monitoring the line shape of the A1g mode. Meanwhile, the 2D band is also discovered as an indicator to observe the CDW transitions. First‐principles calculations imply that interfacial electron doping suppresses the CDW states by impeding the lattice distortion of 2H‐NbSe2. The extraordinary random CDW lattice suggests deep insight into the formation mechanism of many collective electronic states and possesses great potential in modulating multifunctional devices.

Electric field control of superconductivity and quantized anomalous Hall effects in rhombohedral tetralayer graphene

Abstract:Inducing superconducting correlations in chiral edge states is predicted to generate topologically protected zero energy modes with exotic quantum statistics. Experimental efforts to date have focused on engineering interfaces between superconducting materials, typically amorphous metals, and semiconducting quantum Hall or quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) systems. However, the strong interfacial disorder inherent can prevent the formation of isolated topological modes. An appealing alternative is to use low-density flat band materials where the ground state can be tuned between intrinsic superconducting and quantum anomalous Hall states using only the electric field effect. However, quantized transport and superconductivity have not been simultaneously achieved. Here, we show that rhombohedral tetralayer graphene aligned to a hexagonal boron nitride substrate hosts a quantized anomalous Hall state at superlattice filling $\nu = -1$ as well as a superconducting state at $\nu \approx -3.1$ at zero magnetic field. Remarkably, gate voltage can also be used to actuate nonvolatile switching of the chirality in the quantum anomalous Hall state, allowing arbitrarily reconfigurable networks of topological edge modes in locally gated devices. Thermodynamic compressibility measurements further reveal a topologically ordered fractional Chern insulator at $\nu = 2/3$, also stable at zero magnetic field, enabling proximity coupling between superconductivity and fractionally charged edge modes. Finally, we show that integrating an additional transition metal dichalcogenide layer to the heterostructure enhances the maximum superconducting critical temperature and nucleates new superconducting pockets, while leaving the topology of $\nu = -1$ the quantum anomalous Hall state intact. Our results pave the way for hybrid interfaces between superconductors and topological edge states in the low-disorder limit.

Emergent inhomogeneity and non-locality in a graphene field-effect transistor on a near-parallel moire superlattice of transition metal dichalcogenides

Abstract:At near-parallel orientation, twisted bilayer of transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit inter-layer charge transfer-driven out-of-plane ferroelectricity that may lead to unique electronic device architectures. Here we report detailed electrical transport in a dual-gated graphene field-effect transistor placed on 3R stacked twisted bilayer of WSe2 at a twist angle of 2.1 degree. We observe hysteretic transfer characteristics and an emergent charge inhomogeneity with multiple local Dirac points as the electric displacement field (D) is increased. Concomitantly, we also observe a strong non-local voltage signal at D = 0 V/nm that decreases rapidly with increasing D. A linear scaling of the non-local signal with longitudinal resistance suggests edge mode transport, which we attribute to the breaking of valley symmetry of the graphene channel due to the spatially fluctuating electric field from the moire domains of the underlying twisted WSe2. A quantitative analysis connecting the non-locality and channel inhomogeneity suggests emergence of finite-size domains in the graphene channel that modulate the charge and the valley currents simultaneously. This work underlines efficient control and impact of interfacial ferroelectricity that can trigger a new genre of devices for twistronic applications.

Dynamical correlations and order in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract:In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene, transport, thermodynamic and spectroscopic experiments pinpoint at a competition between distinct low-energy states with and without electronic order. We use Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) on the topological heavy Fermion (THF) model of twisted bilayer graphene to investigate the emergence of electronic correlations and long-range order in the absence of strain. We contrast moment formation, Kondo screening and ordering on a temperature basis and explain the nature of emergent correlated states based on three central phenomena: (i) the formation of local spin and valley isospin moments around 100K, (ii) the ordering of the local isospin moments around 10K preempting Kondo screening, and (iii) a cascadic redistribution of charge between localized and delocalized electronic states upon doping. At integer fillings, we find that low energy spectral weight is depleted in the symmetric phase, while we find insulating states with gaps enhanced by exchange coupling in the zero-strain ordered phases. Doping away from integer filling results in distinct metallic states: a "bad metal" above the ordering temperature, where scattering off the disordered local moments suppresses electronic coherence, and a "good metal" in the ordered states with coherence of quasiparticles facilitated by isospin order. This finding reveals coherence from order as the microscopic mechanism behind the Pomeranchuk effect observed experimentally. Upon doping, there is a periodic charge reshuffling between localized and delocalized electronic orbitals leading to cascades of doping-induced Lifshitz transitions, local spectral weight redistributions and periodic variations of the electronic compressibility. Our findings provide a unified understanding of the most puzzling aspects of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, transport, and compressibility experiments.

Abstract:A charge density wave (CDW) represents an exotic state in which electrons are arranged in a long range ordered pattern in low‐dimensional materials. Although our understanding of the fundamental character of CDW has been enriched after extensive studies, its practical application remains limited. Here, we show an unprecedented demonstration of a tunable charge‐spin interconversion (CSI) in graphene/1T‐TaS2 van der Waals heterostructures by manipulating the distinct CDW phases in 1T‐TaS2. Whereas CSI from spins polarized in all three directions are observed in the heterostructure when the CDW phase does not show commensurability, the output of one of the components disappears and the other two are enhanced when the CDW phase becomes commensurate. The experimental observation is supported by first‐principles calculations, which evidence that chiral CDW multidomains in the heterostructure are at the origin of the switching of CSI. Residual quantum coherent electron transport in doped graphene leads

Abstract:Recent low-temperature electron transport experiments in high-quality graphene rely on a technique of doped graphene leads, where the coupling between the graphene flake and its metallic contacts is increased by locally tuning graphene to high doping near the contacts. While this technique is widely used and has demonstrated its usefulness numerous times, little is known about the actual transport properties of the doped graphene leads. Here, we present an experiment probing those properties in the quantum Hall regime at low temperature and high magnetic field, showing that electronic phase coherence and transport chirality are preserved, despite the significant charge equilibration occurring at the edges of the leads. Our work yields a finer understanding of the properties of the doped graphene leads, allowing for improvements of the contact quality that can be applied to other two-dimensional materials.

Nematicity and Orbital Depairing in Superconducting Bernal Bilayer Graphene with Strong Spin Orbit Coupling

Abstract:Superconductivity (SC) is a ubiquitous feature of graphite allotropes, having been observed in Bernal bilayers[1], rhombohedral trilayers[2], and a wide variety of angle-misaligned multilayers[3-6]. Despite significant differences in the electronic structure across these systems, supporting the graphite layer on a WSe$_2$ substrate has been consistently observed to expand the range of SC in carrier density and temperature[7-10]. Here, we report the observation of two distinct superconducting states (denoted SC$_1$ and SC$_2$) in Bernal bilayer graphene with strong proximity-induced Ising spin-orbit coupling. Quantum oscillations show that while the normal state of SC$_1$ is consistent with the single-particle band structure, SC$_2$ emerges from a nematic normal state with broken rotational symmetry. Both superconductors are robust to in-plane magnetic fields, violating the paramagnetic limit; however, neither reach fields expected for spin-valley locked Ising superconductors. We use our knowledge of the Fermi surface geometry of SC$_1$ to argue that superconductivity is limited by orbital depairing arising from the imperfect layer polarization of the electron wavefunctions. Finally, a comparative analysis of transport and thermodynamic compressibility measurements in SC$_2$ shows that the proximity to the observed isospin phase boundaries, observed in other rhombohedral graphene allotropes, is likely coincidental, constraining theories of unconventional superconducting pairing mechanisms in theses systems.

Superconductivity and spin density wave in AA stacked bilayer graphene

Abstract:This work theoretically analyzes electronic ordering in AA-stacked bilayer graphene and the role of the Coulomb interaction in these many-body phenomena. Using the random phase approximation to account for screening, we find intra-layer effective interactions to be much stronger than inter-layer interactions; under certain circumstances, the latter may also become attractive. At zero doping, the Coulomb repulsion stabilizes the spin-density wave state, with a N{é}el temperature in the tens of Kelvin. While dominant in the undoped system, the spin-density wave is destroyed by sufficiently strong doping and a superconducting phase emerges. We find that the effective Coulomb inter-layer interaction can give rise to superconductivity. However, the corresponding critical temperature is negligibly small, and phonon-mediated attraction must be introduced to observe it. Strong intra-layer repulsion suppresses order parameters that couple two intra-layer electrons. We point out a possible superconducting state with finite Cooper pair momentum.

Charge Density Wave Phase Transition on the Surface of Electrostatically Doped Multilayer Graphene

Abstract:We demonstrate that charge density wave (CDW) phase transition occurs on the surface of electronically doped multilayer graphene when the Fermi level approaches the M points (also known as van Hove singularities where the density of states diverge) in the Brillouin zone of graphene band structure. The occurrence of such CDW phase transitions are supported by both the electrical transport measurement and optical measurements in electrostatically doped multilayer graphene. The CDW transition is accompanied with the sudden change of graphene channel resistance at T$_m$= 100K, as well as the splitting of Raman G peak (1580 cm$^{-1}$). The splitting of Raman G peak indicats the lifting of in-plane optical phonon branch degeneracy and the non-degenerate phonon branches are correlated to the lattice reconstructions of graphene -- the CDW phase transition.

Abstract:Quantum Hall effect (QHE), the ground to construct modern conceptual electronic systems with emerging physics, is often much influenced by the interplay between the host two-dimensional electron gases and the substrate, sometimes predicted to exhibit exotic topological states. Yet the understanding of the underlying physics and the controllable engineering of this paradigm of interaction remain challenging. Here we demonstrate the observation of an unusual QHE, which differs markedly from the known picture, in graphene samples in contact with an anti-ferromagnetic insulator CrOCl equipped with dual gates. Owing to the peculiar interfacial coupling, Landau levels in monolayer graphene remain intact at negative filling fractions, but largely deviated for the positive gate-doping range. The latter QHE phase even presents in the limit of zero magnetic field, with the consequential Landau quantization following a parabolic relation between the displacement field $D$ and the magnetic field $B$. This characteristic prevails up to 100 K in a sufficiently wide doping range from 0 to 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. Our findings thus open up new routes for manipulating the quantum electronic states, which may find applications in such as quantum metrology.
Interaction-driven (quasi-) insulating ground states of gapped electron-doped bilayer graphene

Abstract:Bernal bilayer graphene has recently been discovered to exhibit a wide range of unique ordered phases resulting from interaction-driven effects and encompassing spin and valley magnetism, correlated insulators, correlated metals, and superconductivity. This letter reports on a novel family of correlated phases characterized by spin and valley ordering, observed in electron-doped bilayer graphene. The novel correlated phases demonstrate an intriguing non-linear current-bias behavior at ultralow currents that is sensitive to the onset of the phases and is accompanied by an insulating temperature dependence, providing strong evidence for the presence of unconventional charge carrying degrees of freedom originating from ordering. These characteristics cannot be solely attributed to any of the previously reported phases, and are qualitatively different from the behavior seen previously on the hole-doped side. Instead, our observations align with the presence of charge- or spin-density-waves state that open a gap on a portion of the Fermi surface or fully gapped Wigner crystals. The resulting new phases, quasi-insulators in which part of the Fermi surface remains intact or valley-polarized and valley-unpolarized Wigner crystals, coexist with previously known Stoner phases, resulting in an exceptionally intricate phase diagram.

Abstract:Certain layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), such as 1T-TaS2, show a rich collection of charge density wave (CDW) phases at different temperatures, and their atomic structures and electron conductions have been widely studied. However, the properties of CDW systems that are integrated with other electronic materials have not yet been investigated. Here, we incorporate the CDW properties of TMDCs into the electronic transport of graphene for the first time. During CDW phase transitions, anomalous transport behaviors that are closely related to the formation of correlated disorder in TMDCs were observed in the graphene sample used in this study. In particular, the commensurate CDW phase forms a periodic charge distribution with potential fluctuations, and thus constitutes correlated charged impurities, which decreases resistivity and enhances carrier mobility in graphene. The CDW-graphene heterostructure system demonstrated here paves the way to controlling the temperature-dependent carrier mobility and resistivity of graphene and to developing novel functional electronic devices such as graphene-based sensors and memory devices.

Abstract:The proximity properties of edge currents in the vicinity of the interface between the graphene and superconductor in the presence of magnetic field are investigated. It is shown that the edge states introduced by Andreev reflection at the graphene-superconductor (G/S) interface give rise to the charge neutral states in all Landau levels. We note that in a topological insulator-superconductor (TI/S) hybrid structure, only N = 0 Landau level can support this type of charge neutral states. The different interface states of a G/S hybrid and a TI/S hybrid is due to that graphene consists of two distinct sublattices. The armchair edge consists of two inequivalent atoms. This gives rise to unique electronic properties of edge states when connected to a superconductor. A direct consequence of zero charge states in all Landau levels is that the current density approaches zero at interface. The proximity effect leads to quantum magnetic oscillation of the current density in the superconductor region. The interface current density can also be tuned with a finite interface potential. For sharp delta-type interface potential, the derivative of the wavefunction is discontinuous. As a result, we found that there is current density discontinuity at the interface. The step of the current discontinuity is proportional to the strength of the interface potential.
Relativistic Mott transition in strongly correlated artificial graphene

Abstract:The realization of graphene has provided a bench-top laboratory for quantum electrodynamics. The low-energy excitations of graphene are two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions with opposite chiralities at the $\pm$K valleys of the graphene Brillouin zone. It has been speculated that the electron-electron interactions in graphene could spontaneously break the chiral symmetry to induce a finite mass for Dirac fermions, in analogue to dynamical mass generation in elementary particles. The phenomenon is also known as the relativistic Mott transition and has not been observed in pristine graphene because the interaction strength is insufficient. Here, we report the realization of strongly correlated artificial graphene and the observation of the relativistic Mott transition in twisted WSe2 tetralayers. Using magneto transport, we show that the first $\Gamma$-valley moiré valence band mimics the low-energy graphene band structure. At half-band filling, the system exhibits hallmarks of massless Dirac fermions, including an anomalous Landau fan originated from a $\pi$-Berry phase and a square-root density dependence of the cyclotron mass. We tune the interaction across the semimetal-insulator transition by reducing the twist angle below about 2.7 degrees. The emergent insulator is compatible with an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. Our results open the possibility of studying strongly correlated Dirac fermions in a condensed matter system.

Two-channel charge-Kondo physics in graphene quantum dots

Abstract:Nanoelectronic quantum dot devices exploiting the charge-Kondo paradigm have been established as versatile and accurate analog quantum simulators of fundamental quantum impurity models. In particular, hybrid metal-semiconductor dots connected to two metallic leads realize the two-channel Kondo (2CK) model, in which Kondo screening of the dot charge pseudospin is frustrated. Here, we consider theoretically a two-channel charge-Kondo device made instead from graphene components, realizing a pseudogapped version of the 2CK model. We solve the model using Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group method, and uncover a rich phase diagram as a function of dot-lead coupling strength, channel asymmetry, and potential scattering. The complex physics of this system is explored through its thermodynamic properties, scattering T-matrix, and experimentally measurable conductance. We find that the strong coupling pseudogap Kondo phase persists in the channel-asymmetric two-channel context, while in the channel-symmetric case frustration results in a novel quantum phase transition. Remarkably, despite the vanishing density of states in the graphene leads at low energies, we find a finite linear conductance at zero temperature at the frustrated critical point, which is of non-Fermi liquid type. Our results suggest that the graphene charge-Kondo platform offers a unique possibility to access multichannel pseudogap Kondo physics.

Abstract:Vertical heterostructures combining different layered materials offer novel opportunities for applications and fundamental studies of collective behavior driven by inter-layer Coulomb coupling. Here we report heterostructures comprising a single-layer (or bilayer) graphene carrying a fluid of massless (massive) chiral carriers, and a quantum well created in GaAs 31.5 nm below the surface, supporting a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. These are a new class of double-layer devices composed of spatially-separated electron and hole fluids. We find that the Coulomb drag resistivity significantly increases for temperatures below 5-10 K, following a logarithmic law. This anomalous behavior is a signature of the onset of strong inter-layer correlations, compatible with the formation of a condensate of permanent excitons. The ability to induce strongly-correlated electron-hole states paves the way for the realization of coherent circuits with minimal dissipation and nanodevices including analog-to-digital converters and topologically protected quantum bits.

Abstract:Harnessing electronic excitations involving coherent coupling to bosonic modes is essential for the design and control of emergent phenomena in quantum materials [1]. In situations where charge carriers induce a lattice distortion due to the electron-phonon interaction, the conducting states get "dressed". This leads to the formation of polaronic quasiparticles that dramatically impact charge transport, surface reactivity, thermoelectric and optical properties, as observed in a variety of crystals and interfaces composed of polar materials [2-6]. Similarly, when oscillations of the charge density couple to conduction electrons the more elusive plasmon polaron emerges [7], which has been detected in electron-doped semiconductors [8-10]. However, the exploration of polaronic effects on low energy excitations is still in its infancy in two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we present the discovery of an interlayer plasmon polaron in heterostructures composed of graphene on top of SL WS$_2$. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (microARPES) during in situ doping of the top graphene layer, we observe a strong quasiparticle peak accompanied by several carrier density-dependent shake-off replicas around the SL WS$_2$ conduction band minimum (CBM). Our results are explained by an effective many-body model in terms of a coupling between SL WS$_2$ conduction electrons and graphene plasmon modes. It is important to take into account the presence of such interlayer collective modes, as they have profound consequences for the electronic and optical properties of heterostructures that are routinely explored in many device architectures involving 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) [11-15].
