Abstract:The influences of heat treatment, variation in Nb content, surface modification and counterface materials on the wear characteristics of new β type Ti–Nb–Ta–Zr alloys and conventional metallic implant alloy Ti–6Al–4V were investigated, using a reciprocal pin-on-disc wear device in a 0.9% NaCl solution. For the wear test of sliding on stainless steel disc, experimental results show that the wear resistance of Ti–29Nb–13Ta–4.6Zr and Ti–6Al–4V is insensitive to their mechanical properties, such as hardness and ultimate tensile strength. Increase in Nb content results in an improvement of the wear resistance of the β type alloy to some degree. The wear resistance of Ti–29Nb–13Ta–4.6Zr improved significantly after oxidation treatment, due to the presence of Nb2O5 oxide particles on the diffusion hardened surface of the alloy. For wear test of sliding on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and bone of pig, the wear losses of both Ti–Nb–Ta–Zr and Ti–6Al–4V are much less compared with that sliding on stainless steel and there is almost no wear on the surface of oxided Ti–29Nb–13Ta–4.6Zr.

Abstract:Wear damage behavior of new orthopedic Ti-13Nb-13Zr (mass %) alloy with martensitic microstructures developed by different thermo-mechanical treatments were examined during sliding in simulated physiological solution. The results obtained for this alloy processed by cold and hot rolling were compared with that of the standard Ti-6Al-4 V (mass %) alloy heat-treated to produce martensitic microstructure. The block-on-disk sliding friction and wear tests were conducted in Ringer’s solution. The friction coefficient, wear rate, and wear damage mechanisms were determined over a range of normal loads (20–60 N) and linear sliding speeds (0.26–1.0 m/s). The surface damage morphology revealed the presence of corrosive, abrasive, and adhesive wear in all investigated materials. The friction and wear properties were found to be dependent on the predominant wear damage mechanism and applied load/sliding speed combination. In the case of a Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy, the adhesive wear contributes to the higher wear rate and better friction behavior. This cold-rolled alloy, having a martensitic microstructure with the lowest hardness, shows the lowest friction coefficient values due to high material transfer from the alloy surface. The lowest friction resistance is observed for the Ti-6Al-4 V alloy with the highest hardness since the dominant wear damage mechanism is abrasion resulting in the low wear rate and material transfer.

Abstract:Dry sliding wear behaviors of the Al-10Ti alloy prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) were investigated and compared with those of the alloy obtained by the rapid solidification (RS) process. The results show that, under low sliding velocity of 0.66 m/s and low applied load, the predominant wear mechanism of Al-10Ti alloy against carbon steel is adhesion. The fine dispersing reinforcement in the alloy promotes the nucleation and propagation of cracks on the subsurface, leading to a higher wear rate of MA Al-10Ti alloy, compared with that of RS Al-10Ti alloy. With increasing normal load, the formation and spallation of transfer layers on the worn surface become the predominant wear mechanism. Therefore, the wear resistance of the alloy obtained by MA surpasses that achieved by RS due to the higher strength at both ambient and elevated temperature. The wear transfer layer of the MA Al-10Ti alloy is determined to be consisted mainly of Fe4O3 and metal Fe.

Abstract:The fretting wear behaviors and mechanism of a high Nb–TiAl alloy with full lamellar microstructure at ambient temperature were investigated. The fretting wear mechanism of the alloy under different loads and displacement amplitudes was revealed using experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the load and displacement amplitude significantly affected fretting wear behaviors and the mechanism of the Ti–45Al–9Nb alloy. Higher load and lower displacement amplitude could effectively reduce the fretting wear of the alloy. Molecular dynamics simulation results showed that the order-twin lamellar interface hindered the deformation and dislocation movement of twins, improved the mechanical properties of the material, and improved the wear resistance of such alloy. The wear mechanism of Ti–45Al–9Nb alloy was adhesive wear and surface fatigue wear.

Abstract:The effects of heat treatment on the microstructure and phase constitution of Ti-3Zr-2Sn-3Mo-15Nb (TLM) alloy were investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The wear resistance of TLM alloy was tested by sliding wear in comparison with as-annealed Ti-6Al-4V and as-aged Ti-13Nb-13Zr. The results show that the specimen cooled from alpha+ss dual phase region is mainly composed of ss, alpha and alpha '' phases, while the specimen cooled from ss single phase region is mainly composed of ss and alpha phases, in which ss phase is predominate. The coefficient of friction of TLM alloy treated at 680 degrees C, 1 h, AC+510 degrees C, 6 h, AC is smaller than that of others, thereby TLM alloy has a better wear resistance which is also proved by the surface topography after wear test.

Abstract:The high cost and potential toxicity associated with the common commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloy are major concerns against its continued use in the biomedical industry. Low-cost, less toxic titanium alloys have been developed as a possible alternative to Ti-6Al-4V. Because of the various wear processes that take place in the human body, it is imperative to have a good understanding of the wear properties and wear resistance of these alloys. This study, therefore, investigated the resistance to wear of the low-cost Ti-3Fe, Ti-4.5Al-1V-3Fe, and Ti-4.5Al-1V-3Fe alloys under dry sliding conditions in contrast to the common commercial alloy, Ti-6Al-4V. The findings revealed that among the tested alloys, Ti-3Fe exhibited the lowest resistance to wear as it displayed the highest coefficient of friction (0.55) and wear rate (5.55E-06 mm 3 /Nm). The Ti-4.5Al-1V-3Fe alloy demonstrated superior wear resistance compared to the rest of the alloys, including Ti-6Al-4V, as it had the lowest wear rate (4.27E-06 mm 3 /Nm) and wear volume (0.0026 mm 3 ). Overall, the experimental alloys displayed very similar wear resistance to Ti-6Al-4V, making them promising commercial alloys that can replace Ti-6Al-4V in bioimplant applications.

Abstract:The Ti6Al4V alloy has been widely used in aerospace equipment and medical devices. However, the poor wear resistance of the Ti6Al4V alloy hinders its further engineering application. In this study, the ultrasonic strengthening grinding process (USGP) and laser texturing process were employed to enhance the wear resistance of Ti6Al4V alloy. The frictional behavior of all samples was determined via a ball-on-disc friction and wear tester under dry conditions. The worn surface morphology, cross-sectional hardness, surface roughness, and microstructure were analyzed. The results demonstrated that the USGP induced high hardness, high dislocation density, and grain refinement, as well as improvements in the wear resistance of Ti6Al4V. Moreover, laser texture could enhance the capacity to capture wear debris and reduce wear probability. When combining the USGP and laser texturing process for the surface treatment of Ti6Al4V alloy, the lowest and most stable friction coefficients were obtained, as well as the best wear resistance. Compared to the polished sample, the steady stage friction coefficient of the sample treated by USGP and laser texturing process was remarkably decreased by 58%. This work demonstrates that combining the USGP and laser texturing process could be a promising solution for improving the wear resistance properties of Ti6Al4V alloy, which makes it more suitable for various engineering applications.

Among Ti alloys, the Ti-Nb systems are a pronounced group to biomedical applications due to its low elastic modulus, good corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. Although this system is quite well-known regarding its phases, structure and properties, there is not plenty of information about wear available in the literature. To investigate the wear resistance, the samples were submitted to x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the phases formed. Hardness and elastic modulus were measured by microhardness Vickers and dynamic Young modulus by excitation impulse. Additionally, wear volume, wear resistance, and H/E ratio were calculated to understand the wear material's performance. This study aims to investigate the wear resistance of Ti-xNb (x = 15, 25 and 40wt.%), one of each type of Ti alloys and phases formed: Ti-15Nb (α ́), Ti-25Nb (α") and Ti-40Nb (β) and the influence of cooling rate after solution heat treatment on wear properties through ball cratering. It was possible to find that the harder the alloy, the higher the wear resistance. Thus, in the case of Ti-xNb (x = 15, 25 and 40wt.%), alloys the hardness plays a significant role in wear resistance. Besides that, the samples that have presented the α ́ or α"phase have the lowest wear resistance. Therefore, not only the hardness influences the wear resistance but also the combination of phases formed.

Abstract:Recent advances in lower-cost processing of titanium, coupled with its potential use as a light weight material in engines and brakes has renewed interest in the tribological behavior of titanium alloys. To help establish a baseline for further studies on the tribology of titanium against various classes of counterface materials, pin-on-disk sliding friction and wear experiments were conducted on two different titanium alloys (Ti–6Al–4V and Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–2Mo). Disks of these alloys were slid against fixed bearing balls composed of 440C stainless steel, silicon nitride, alumina, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) at two speeds: 0.3 and 1.0m/s. The friction coefficient and wear rate were lower at the higher sliding speed. Ceramic sliders suffered unexpectedly higher wear than the steel slider. The wear rates, ranked from the highest to the lowest, were alumina, silicon nitride, and steel, respectively. This trend is inversely related to their hardness, but corresponds to their relative fracture toughness. Comparative tests on a Type 304 stainless steel disk supported the fracture toughness dependency. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed the tendency of Ti alloys to transfer material to their counterfaces and suggested possible tribochemical reactions between the ceramic sliders and Ti alloy disks. These reaction products, which adhere to the ceramic sliders, may degrade the mechanical properties of the contact areas and result in high wear. The tribochemical reactions along with the fracture toughness dependency helped explain the high wear on the ceramic sliders.

Abstract:β-type titanium (Ti) alloys have been extensively investigated as orthopedic implant materials due to their unique combination of low elastic modulus, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study the mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, friction and wear performance, and cytotoxicity of β-type Ti–24Nb–38Zr–2Mo (TNZM) and Ti–24Nb–38Zr–2Mo–0.1Sc (TNZMS) have been comparatively investigated for orthopedic applications. Cold-rolling (CR) and cold-rolling plus solution-treatment (CR+ST) were performed on the as-cast (AC) alloys and their microstructures and material properties were characterized. The impact of Sc addition on the mechanical and corrosion properties, friction and wear behavior, and in vitro cytocompatibility of the TNZMS alloy was assessed. The CR+ST TNZMS alloy exhibited the best combination of properties among all the alloy samples, with a yield strength of 780 MPa, ultimate strength of 809 MPa, elongation of 19%, Young's modulus of 65.4 GPa, and hardness of 265 HV. Electrochemical testing in Hanks' Solution indicated that the CR+ST TNZMS sample also showed the highest corrosion resistance with a corrosion potential of –0.234 V, corrosion current density of 0.07 μA/cm2, and corrosion rate of 1.2 μm/y. Friction and wear testing revealed that the TNZMS alloy showed higher wear resistance compared to the TNZM alloy and the wear resistance of the different samples was ranked CR > CR+ST > AC. Finally, both the CR+ST TNZM and TNZMS showed no-cytotoxicity towards MG-63 cells and the TNZMS exhibited slightly higher cytocompatibility than the TNZM alloy.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to study the wear properties of electron beam melted Ti6Al4V (EBM-Ti6Al4V) in simulated body fluids for orthopedic implant biomedical applications compared with wrought Ti6Al4V (Wr-Ti6Al4V). Design/methodology/approach Wear properties of EBM-Ti6Al4V compared with Wr-Ti6Al4V against ZrO2 and Al2O3 have been investigated under dry friction and the 25 Wt.% newborn calf serum (NCS) lubricated condition using a ball-on-disc apparatus reciprocating motion. The microstructure, composition and hardness of the samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction and a hardness tester, respectively. The contact angles with 25 Wt.% NCS were measured by a contact angle apparatus. The wear parameters, wear 2D and 3D morphology were obtained using a 3D white light interferometer and SEM. Findings EBM-Ti6Al4V yields a higher contact angle than the Wr-Ti6Al4V with the 25 Wt.% NCS. EBM-Ti6Al4V couplings exhibit lower coefficients of friction compared with the Wr-Ti6Al4V couplings under both conditions. There is only a slight difference in the wear resistance between the Wr-Ti6Al4V and EBM-Ti6Al4V alloys. Both Wr-Ti6Al4V and EBM-Ti6Al4V suffer from similar friction and wear mechanisms, i.e. adhesive and abrasive wear in dry friction, while abrasive wear under the NCS condition. The wear depth and wear volume of the ZrO2 couplings are lower than those of the Al2O3 couplings under both conditions. Originality/value This paper helps to establish baseline bio-tribological data of additively manufactured Ti6Al4V by electron beam melting in simulated body fluids for orthopedic applications, which will promote the application of additive manufacturing in producing the orthopedic implant.
Improved mechanical and wear properties of Ti−35Nb−5Ta−7Zr−xSi alloys fabricated by selective electron beam melting for biomedical application

Abstract:As the next generation biomedical titanium alloy, β -type titanium alloys are excellent candidates for biomedical applications due to the relative low elastic modulus and the contained non-toxic elements. However, the relative low strength and unsatisfactory tribological property are undesired for load-bearing implant applications. In this study, 0–5 at% Si was added to the classic Ti−35Nb−5Ta−7Zr alloy to improve its strength and wear resistance, and the (Ti−35Nb−5Ta−7Zr) 1− x −Si x ( x =0, 1 at% and 5 at%) alloy were fabricated by selective electron beam melting (SEBM) technology. The results indicated that Si addition significantly increases in compressive yield strength, which is mainly due to grain refinement strengthening. At the same time, the wear rate of the as-built TNTZ-5Si alloy in SBF solution was only ∼30% of the Ti−6Al−4V alloy. Consequently, the TNTZ-5Si alloy showed an excellent combination of compressive yield strength, elastic modulus and wear resistance for potential load-bearing implant applications.

Abstract:This research emphasizes the development of biocompatible Ti-xNb (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt.%) alloys through powder metallurgy to attain a lower elastic modulus, high strength, low wear, and high corrosion resistance appropriate for biomedical implants. The developed alloys were comprehensively analyzed through microstructural, physical, mechanical, electrochemical, biological, and tribological investigations to assess their suitability by comparing their properties with commercially pure titanium (cpTi). The outcomes demonstrate, powder metallurgy is an effective route for developing Ti-Nb alloys with several desirable properties. Incorporating niobium (Nb) into titanium (Ti) introduces the β phase within the alloys, which increases with Nb concentration and contributes to decreasing the elastic modulus to as low as 43.47 ± 4.9 GPa. All Ti-Nb alloys exhibits higher hardness and compressive strength than cpTi, with values of 403.23 ± 21.38 HV and 1322.45 ± 25.64 MPa obtained for the Ti-10Nb alloy. A lower concentration of Nb shows comparable corrosion resistance of the Ti-Nb alloys to cpTi, whereas a higher Nb concentration is unfavorable. Furthermore, the tribological findings demonstrate superior antifriction and antiwear properties in all Ti-Nb alloys compared to cpTi. Notably, Ti-10Nb displays outstanding wear resistance with a 41.82% lower friction coefficient in dry conditions and 31.11% in simulated body fluid (SBF), along with 81.08% reduction in wear volume in dry conditions and 63.11% in SBF compared to cpTi. Among all developed alloys, Ti-10Nb exhibits various desired properties, suggesting its potential as an alternative to cpTi for biomedical implant applications.

Abstract:Wear-induced damages cause significant materials loss each year. Al alloys are widely used by industry but usually have low wear resistance. Here, we compare the tribological behaviors of ultrafine grained Al, a nanoprecipitate hardened Al 7075 alloy and nanotwinned Al–Ni alloys using the nanoscratch. The nanotwinned Al–Ni alloys exhibit lower coefficient of friction and much greater wear resistance than the Al and Al 7075 alloys. The enhanced wear properties of Al–Ni alloys arise from their high strength and the evolution of nanotwinned microstructures into gradient nanograins during wear. These findings on fundamental wear mechanisms in nanotwinned alloys may advance the discovery of wear-resistant metallic materials.

Abstract:In this work, Ti-12Mo-6Zr-2Fe (wt.%)(TMZF) alloy was fabricated using pre-mixed metallic powders by selective laser melting (SLM) technology. The microstructure and wear resistance of SLM TMZF and forged TMZF alloy specimens were compared. The SLM TMZF samples constitute fine columnar and equiaxed grains (average grain size:18.2 μm), while the forged samples comprise of a large quantity of coarse equiaxed grains (average grain size:54.6 μm). The average microhardness of SLM TMZF (415.6 ± 24.09HV 0.2 ) alloys was 15.6 % higher than that of the forged ones (359.6 ± 10.48HV 0.2 ), leading to a lower average wear rate of the SLM TMZF alloys (8.77 × 10 -5 mm 3 )/(N∙m)) than that of the forged TMZF ones (1.59 × 10 -4 mm 3 /(N∙m)). In addition, the average coefficient of friction (COF) of SLM TMZF specimen and forged TMZF specimen are 0.55 and 0.57, respectively.

Abstract:The present study demonstrates the development of novel Ti-xZr (x = 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt.%) via vacuum sealing-assisted sintering technique. The microstructure, phase composition, physical, mechanical, tribological properties, and electrochemical corrosion behavior were investigated for biomedical applications. The phase composition and microstructure show the presence of α phases in as-prepared alloys. The alloys exhibit elevated hardness levels (477.59 ± 30.22 HV to 539.05 ± 27.09 HV), surpassing commercially pure titanium (cpTi, 200.26 HV) and Ti-6Al-4V (340.51 HV). Tribological studies of Ti-15Zr displays superior antifriction and antiwear properties, with a friction coefficient of 0.22 and a wear rate of 1.23 × 10 –7 mm 3 per mm of sliding distance. All alloys exhibit commendable corrosion resistance in simulated body fluid, with the Ti-20Zr alloy displaying a minimum corrosion rate of 1.29 μm/year. In conclusion, the synthesized alloys demonstrate the substantial potential for biomedical applications, particularly in orthopedic and dental implants, due to enhanced mechanical characteristics, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:β-titanium (β-Ti) alloys are used in various biomedical applications, especially for orthopedic implants, due to their superior biocompatibility, excellent corrosion resistance, and enhanced mechanical properties. However, the inferior tribological properties of β-Ti alloys lead to fretting wear and a strong tendency to seize, which is a major concern in orthopedic applications involving continuous friction. This work aims to address this issue by incorporating biocompatible nitrides in Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta (TNZT) β-Ti alloys. TNZT composites comprising 2 wt.% of biocompatible nitrides (TiN, NbN, ZrN, and TaN) were prepared using high-energy ball milling followed by spark plasma sintering. All the nitrides improved the hardness and wear resistance of TNZT alloys and showed excellent biocompatibility. TNZT-2 wt.% TiN showed the average highest hardness of 311.8 HV and the lowest coefficient of friction of 0.659, suggesting the highest efficiency of TiN in improving the tribological performance of TNZT alloys. The underlying mechanisms behind the superior performance of nitride-reinforced TNZT composites are discussed in detail. The effect of TiN concentration was also studied by preparing TNZT composites with 5 and 10 wt.% TiN, which showcased a higher hardness of 388.5 HV and 444.3 HV, respectively. This work will aid in producing superior β-Ti alloys for advanced orthopedic applications.

Abstract:Intermetallic alloys such as titanium aluminides (TiAl) are potential materials for aerospace applications at elevated temperatures. TiAl intermetallics have low weight and improved efficiency under aggressive environments. However, there is limited information about wear behavior of these alloys and their microstructure. The present work aims to study the influence of the microstructure in the tribological behavior of TiAl intermetallic alloy (45Al-2Mn-2Nb(at%)-0.8 vol%TiB2). Wear tests were performed on samples manufactured by centrifugal casting (CC) and hot isostatic pressure (HIP). Reciprocating sliding wear test was carried out for TiAl, it was combined with different loads and frequencies. Wear tracks were analyzed through opto-digital microscopy and electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained reveal that CC intermetallics present the lowest volume wear lost, approximately 20% less than HIP intermetallics. This good behavior could be related to the high hardness material, associated with the main microstructure where CC intermetallic has nearly lamellar microstructure and HIP intermetallics present duplex microstructure.

Abstract:Titanium and its alloys are widely utilized in the biomedical sector, they still exhibit poor tribological properties and low wear resistance when employed against even weaker substances. The poor hardness, instability, high coefficient of friction, low load-carrying capacity, and insufficient resistance to not only abrasive but also adhesive wear are further disadvantages of titanium alloys. The focus of this investigation is on the tribological performance of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy in contact with WC carbide abrasive balls when subjected to nanodoped cooling and lubrication conditions. Tribological experiments were executed on Ti-6Al-4 V flat samples using a ball-on-flat tribometer in dry hybrid graphene/boron nitride combination nanoparticles (MQL, nano-3), nanographene with MQL (nano-1), and boron nitride with MQL (nano-2) conditions. After that, the most significant tribological characteristics were investigated, including volume loss, friction coefficient, wear rate, and micrographic structures. The outcomes also demonstrated that the hybrid nanoparticle situation experienced the least amount of volume loss.

Abstract:The tribological properties of heterogeneous Ti–Si–Zr titanium alloys with an e(β-Ti + (Ti, Zr) 2 Si) eutectic were studied in different friction conditions. Tribological tests were performed with two methods. The samples were subjected to shaft–bush (counterface–material) tests by dry friction against ShKh15 steel employing an M-22M machine at a load of 20 N and a sliding speed of 1–6 m/sec with one method. The other method involved quasistatic and dynamic sphere–plane tests with an effective load of 30 N employing a computer-assisted tribology system. The indenter materials were ShKh15 steel and Si 3 N 4 ceramics. The tests were performed at a sliding speed of approximately 0.0147 m/sec in water. The linear and weight wear rate for the cast Ti–10Si–10Zr–1Sn sample with a superfine eutectic structure determined with the first method at the greatest test speed (6 m/sec) was found to be 1.4 times higher than that of the Ti–9Si–7.6Zr alloy. The Ti–10Si–10Zr– 1Sn alloy showed the lowest wear resistance under quasistatic and dynamic loads with the second method, regardless of the indenter material (ShKh15 or Si 3 N 4 ). Contrastingly to the previous data for cast irons and steels, the eutectic Ti–Si–Zr titanium alloys for the first time showed smaller wear under dynamic loading than under quasistatic loading. Thermomechanical treatment of the hypoeutectic Ti–9Si–7.6Zr alloy was established to increase its wear resistance by more than 1.6 times.
