Abstract:Finding green and profitable recovery methods has always been a great challenge for Li/Co recovery from LiCoO2 (LCO) in waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). A top priority was specially proposed on energy and material consumptions for the industrialization of carbothermal technology from an economic point of view. Meanwhile, pollution caused by plastic wastes including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics has already become a serious environmental issue. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a PVC–LCO synergetic pyrolysis strategy for Li/Co recovery. Results showed that the LiCoO2 was fully destructed to Li2CO3, CoO, Co, and Cl-containing salts at 450 °C for 90 min with a PVC/LCO mass ratio of 1:1. The reaction temperature was decreased significantly in comparison to the ever-reported values of the carbothermal technology. High-purity Li and Co were then separated simply by water leaching, with a recovery rate of 92.50 and 94.85%, respectively. Simultaneous thermogravimetric–mass analysis, thermodynamic analysis, and density functional theory revealed the reaction mechanisms as three-stage PVC cracking together with Li/Co–Cl bond formation after Cl adsorption on surface Li/Co of LCO. Overall, the PVC synergetic pyrolysis strategy possessed distinct advantages owing to the remarkable energy-conserving and chemical-free features and provided an economical, green, and scalable solution for LIB recycle.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of leaching valuable metals from waste lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) using waste polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a source of hydrochloric acid under subcritical water treatment conditions was investigated. The effects of various parameters including temperature, reaction time, PVC/LiFePO 4 mass ratio, and solid-to-liquid ratio on metal leaching were investigated. The results showed that the leaching of metals and dechlorination of PVC could be achieved simultaneously under subcritical hydrothermal conditions. The solid residues were analyzed using XRD, XPS and SEM-EDS elemental mapping to identify the compounds in the leached solids. ICP-OES analysis showed that optimal reaction conditions, including a temperature of 275 °C, a reaction time of 120 min, a PVC/ LiFePO 4 mass ratio of 3:2, and a solid/liquid ratio of 1:10 (g/mL), could effectively leach 99.10 % of Li and 83.12 % Fe. Finally, the Li in the leachate was recovered in the form of Li 3 PO 4 by precipitation. These findings suggest that subcritical water synergistic waste PVC technology is a promising and eco-friendly method to recover Li and Fe from waste lithium iron phosphate.

Abstract:The disposal and management of waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastics pose significant environmental challenges. Here we show a synergistic pyrolysis approach that employs spent lithium transition metal oxides and waste LDPE plastics in one sealed reactor to achieve the separation of Li and transition metal. Additionally, we demonstrate the preparation of nanoscale NiCo alloy@carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through co-pyrolysis of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 and LDPE. The NiCo alloy@CNTs exhibits excellent catalytic activity (Eonset = ~0.85 V) and the selectivity (~90%) for H2O2 production through the electrochemical reduction of oxygen. This can be attributed to the NiCo nanoalloy core and the presence of CNTs with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups (e.g., -COOH and C-O-C), as confirmed by density function theory calculations. Overall, this work presents a straightforward and green approach for valorizing and upcycling various waste LIBs and LDPE plastics.
Efficient recovery of valuable metals from cathode materials of spent LiCoO2 batteries via co-pyrolysis with cheap carbonaceous materials

Abstract:Recovery of valuable metals from spent Li-ion batteries has prominent economic and environmental benefits. In this study, a novel approach for recycling valuable metals from spent LiCoO2 batteries via co-pyrolysis with three different carbonaceous materials (waste polyethylene, biomass, and coal)) was proposed and evaluated. The thermodynamic analysis proved that carbonaceous materials (mainly carbon) were theoretically able to facilitate the decomposition process of LiCoO2. The promotion effect on LiCoO2 decomposition was in the following order: coal > biomass > polyethylene, and the decomposition temperature of LiCoO2 could significantly reduce by 400 °C via adding coal. The char produced from the carbonaceous materials, rather than the volatiles, played an important role in LiCoO2 decomposition and reduction. The pyrolysis products of LiCoO2 and coal mixture exhibited typical superparamagnetism and hysteresis behaviours, which benefitted the subsequent magnetic separation. The recovery rates of Co and Li were sensitive to the pyrolysis temperature and residence time, respectively. A high proportion of Co was in the form of CoO below 800 °C and had not been completely reduced, leading to the relatively lower recovery rates of Co below 800 °C. The optimal recovery rates of Co (96.8%) and Li (88.7%) were obtained at the pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C and the residence time of 10 min. The final recovery products were Co and Li2CO3 with rather high crystallinities and purities. Therefore, this study provided a novel approach for the efficient recycling of valuable metals from spent Li-ion batteries with high application prospects.

Abstract:Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) comprise different kinds of valuable metals with recovery and reuse value. Aiming to address the difficulty of recycling lithium from spent LIBs through conventional pyrometallurgy, a new method of high-efficiency separation and recovery of lithium through volatilization is proposed. In this new method, spent LIBs as the raw material, copper slag as the only flux and CaCl2 as an additive are utilized to recover lithium from spent LIBs. Under the optimal conditions, the volatilization rate of Li was 96.87%. During the smelting process, lithium is volatilized into the gas phase in the form of LiCl, where lithium can be recycled from the dust. In light of the experimental results, the addition of CaCl2 contributes to the formation of LiCl. The kinetics study showed that the volatilization of LiCl was controlled by an interfacial chemical reaction, and the apparent activation energy was 42.57 kJ/mol. In addition, Li2CO3 could be obtained from lithium-containing dust using a precipitation process. This method achieves efficient separation of lithium during the reduction smelting process. The phase transformation and kinetics of the separation process were investigated, and reaction mechanism was revealed. Importantly, the novel process provides new ideas and perspectives for the separation of lithium from spent LIBs through a pyrometallurgical process.

Abstract:As lithium metal resource supply and demand stabilize and prices decrease, the efficient recovery of valuable metals other than lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries is receiving increasing attention. Currently, challenges remain in the selective lithium recovery efficiency and the high cost of regenerating valuable metal slag after lithium extraction, particularly for spent ternary cathode materials. To address these challenges, this study introduces a closed-loop recovery process for spent ternary cathode materials, employing sulfur-assisted roasting to achieve efficient lithium extraction and high-value direct regeneration of ternary leaching residues. At moderate temperatures (500 °C), LiNi x Co y Mn 1−x-y O 2 (NCM) materials undergo a directional transformation of lithium to Li 2 SO 4 in synergy with sulfur and oxygen, achieving a lithium leaching extraction rate of 98.91 %. Additionally, the relatively mild reaction conditions preserve the secondary spherical morphology and uniform distribution of NiCoMn-based oxide residue without introducing adverse impurities, ensuring the successful regeneration of high-value NCM cathode materials (R-NCM). The R-NCM material exhibits good discharge capacity (144.3 mA·h/g at 1 C) and relatively stable cycling performance, with a capacity retention rate of 80 % after 150 cycles. This work provides a viable pathway for the efficient and environmental-friendly pyrometallurgical closed-loop recovery of spent lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:With the increasing number of spent lithium-ion batteries, the development of efficient and environmentally friendly recycling technologies has become a key research focus. This study aims to establish a physical recycling method that integrates thermal treatment and mechanical separation to enhance the recovery rate of LiFePO 4 materials while minimizing environmental impact. The process combines thermal treatment, mechanical separation, and air separation, with key factors influencing material separation and recovery efficiency analyzed through single-factor and variance analyses. Additionally, the carbon footprint of the recycling process was assessed using SimaPro software. The experimental results indicate that within a temperature range of 270°C–300°C, thermal treatment effectively separates LiFePO 4 from aluminum foil, achieving a recovery rate of 96.88%. The air separation experiments further demonstrate that at an airflow speed of 20 m/s, the cathode material and current collector can be efficiently separated. Moreover, the carbon footprint analysis shows that this method significantly reduces carbon emissions.

Abstract:The low-carbon recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries has become crucial due to the increasing need to address resource shortages and environmental concerns. Herein, a low-carbon, facile, and efficient method was developed to separate and recover Li, Al, and transition metals from spent ternary cathodes. Initially, the cathode materials post-discharge and disassembly do not require pre-sorting. Instead of using carbonaceous materials, the Al foil in the cathode serves as the reducing agent during reduction roasting. The impact of different roasting atmospheres (air, N2, CO2) on phase transitions and the extraction of valuable metals was examined. The findings revealed that after synergistic thermite reduction in a carbon dioxide atmosphere, the cathode material is completely dissociated. Li is selectively converted to Li2CO3 rather than LiAlO2, and the reduced reactivity of the Al foil encourages the formation of lower-valence oxides of Ni and Co, rather than their metallic forms. Under optimal roasting conditions at 650 °C for 1.0 h, 91.4% of Li can be preferentially and selectively extracted through carbonation water leaching, with less than 0.1% of Al and transition metals dissolving. Subsequently, ∼98% of Al and ∼99% of Ni, Co, and Mn can be leached using alkaline and acidic solutions, respectively. Compared to the traditional carbon thermal reduction process, this process offers several advantages including the elimination of pre-sorting and additional reducing agents, lower carbon emissions, and higher recovery rates of valuable metals. Thus, this process makes the recovery of metals from spent lithium-ion batteries more environmentally sustainable, simple, cost-effective, and adaptable.

Abstract:LiCoO2 (LCO) lithium-ion battery (LIB) is rich in valuable metals (cobalt and lithium), which has high recycling value. The existing process has basically realized the extraction of cobalt, but there are still shortcomings in harmless disposal of fluorine-containing electrolyte, binder and other organic matters, selective extraction of lithium and low-cost extraction of cobalt. In this context, a novel process was developed to realize the full-component recovery of spent LiCoO2 battery via environmentally friendly pyrolysis and hydrometallurgical leaching. The organic matters were recovered in the form of pyrolytic oil and gas, in which the harmful fluorine element was absorbed by Ca(OH)2 solution. The current collectors (copper and aluminum) were recovered after the easy separation of electrode materials due to the degradation of binders. During pyrolysis the cathode material was deconstructed and reduced under the synergistic effect of pyrolytic gas and anode graphite. Selective recovery of lithium and cobalt was achieved through carbonated water leaching and reductant-free acid leaching. The leaching efficiencies of lithium and cobalt were respectively 87.9% and 99.1% under the optimal conditions. Lithium carbonate and cobalt sulfate were obtained by evaporative crystallization, respectively. The remaining residue was only graphite without impurity entrainment. The results in this research suggest that the process consisting of pyrolysis and hydrometallurgical leaching is inexpensive, efficient, and eco-friendly for full-component recycling of spent LiCoO2 battery.

Abstract:The rationalization usage of spent lithium-ion batteries has become a prospective industry in the field of new-energy system. However, with the progress of technology, how to explore the strategy method with efficient, green and energy-saving peculiarity have become the major issue for recycling batteries. Recently, the mechanochemical activation (MCA) process has been proposed as a method to reduce leaching time and temperature, further tackling excessive usage of corrosive chemical agents in hydrometallurgical techniques. We leverage a co-grinding agent of spent LiCoO2 (S-LCO) and Na2SO3 (reduction properties) to facilitate the physical and chemical transformations of the S-LCO, thereby enhancing the leaching process. MCA can homogenize particle size, enhance its hydrophilicity, induce lattice distortion and refine lattice structure, thereby the surface energy is increased, further improving the reaction activity of S-LCO. Meanwhile, Na2SO3 promotes the isomorphic substitution between Na+ and Li+ and reduces Co3+ to Co2+. Because of above superiority, this novel MCA shortens leaching time and reduces leaching temperature, as well as improves leaching efficiency and reduces the use of acidic solvents. Practically, the cell with regenerated LiCoO2 exhibits excellent cycling performance and rate capability (a high capacity retention of 84.54% after 120 cycles at 0.2C), which sheds some light on the interface processing engineering of co-grinding agent for recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:With an ever-growing demand for critical raw materials for the production of lithium-ion batteries and a price increase of respective commodities, an ever louder call from the industry for efficient recycling technologies can be noticed. So far, state-of-the-art industry-scaled pyrometallurgical recycling technologies all suffer from the same bottleneck of lithium slagging. At the Chair of Thermal Processing Technology at Montanuniversitaet Leoben, a novel reactor was developed to recover lithium and phosphorus via the gas phase in a pyrometallurgical process. Critical elements such as Li, Ni, Co, and Mn of the commercially used cathode materials LCO (LiCoO2), LFP (LiFePO4), NCA (LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2), and NMC622 (LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2) were analyzed in a batch version of the so-called InduRed reactor concept. The analyses underline that the reactor concept is highly suitable for an efficient recovery for the metals Ni and Co and that slagging of Li can not only be largely prohibited, but the elements lithium and phosphorous can even be recovered from the gas phase. Plant engineering issues were also considered for further development toward a continuous process. The MgO crucible used shows significant diffusion of various elements from the battery material, which is why the choice of crucible material still requires in-depth research.

Abstract:Using oxidizing compounds to handle the recycling of discarded lithium batteries has advanced significantly in recent years. One of the most prominent methods is the sintered electrode powder treatment using pre-used additives, with an aqueous solution of the oxidizing agent fueling highly selective lithium extraction and transition metals retention in the refractory material. Herein, phosphoric acid (H3PO4) was used as the exchanger and hydrogen ions provider, the oxidant (K2S2O8) activity was driven by heating, the raw material structure was deformed and adjusted by the oxidizing drive, and lithium was exhausted, while manganese was converted into manganese(III) phosphate hydrate and manganese dioxide insoluble material. The optimized conditions resulted in a lithium leaching rate of 94.16% and a separation factor of 95.74%, while the corresponding manganese leaching rate was limited to less than 5%. The X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements were used to investigate the influence of oxidation driving force and lithium leaching. Finally, the lithium leach solution was continuously stirred with sodium carbonate in boiling water to obtain the precipitate, which was separated and washed several times to obtain high-purity lithium carbonate.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries recycling is crucial for environmental protection and resource conservation. Among the battery components, lithium holds high value, but current recovery methods exhibit limited efficiency in selectively extracting lithium from spent electrode materials. In this study, we propose a novel pathway that combines magnetization roasting with multi-stage extraction to enhance the recovery of lithium from spent electrode materials. The process begins with the decomposition of the spent ternary cathode material into CoO, NiO, MnO, Co, and Ni at 600 °C for 30 min using pyrolysis product-derived reducing agents. Heat-induced magnetization of the cathode plates facilitates magnetic separation, effectively isolating cathode, and anode plates. The cathode material can be recycled by water impact crushing combined with sieving, and 40.80 % lithium dissolves into water for recycling. The comprehensive recycling efficiency of lithium is up to 95.30 % after carbothermal reduction with 15 % carbon addition. The sub-microlevel migration behavior of lithium ions in the proposed scheme was also examined for further mechanistic insights.

Abstract:From the perspective of environmental protection and resource recovery, recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is a meaningful process. In this study, the removal of organics, liberatioin of electrode material, and reduction of high valence transition metal, as the key points in recycling efficiency of valuable metals, have been firstly achieved simultaneously by low temperature heat treatment recycling process. Pyrolysis characteristics of organics, phase transition behavior of spent cathode material and the thermal reduction mechanism were evaluated in the meantime. Results demonstrate that organics can be removed and the liberation of electrode materials can be improved by pyrolysis. High-valence transition metals in cathode materials are synchronously reduced to CoO, NiO, MnO, Ni, and Co based on the reducing action of organics, aluminum foil and conductive additives. At the same time, Li element exists in the form of Li2CO3, LiF and aluminum-lithium compound that can be recycled by water-leaching in the water impact crushing process while transition metals can be recycled by acid leaching without reducing agents. 81.26% of Li can be recycled from water-leaching process while the comprehensive recovery rate of Ni, Co, Mn is 92.04%, 93.01%, 92.21%, respectively. This study may provide an environmentally-friendly recycling flowchart of spent lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hormonal ablation is the standard of treatment for advanced androgen‐dependent prostate cancer. Although tumor regression is usually achieved at first, the cancer inevitably evolves toward androgen‐independence, in part because of the development of mechanisms of resistance and in part because at the tissue level androgen withdrawal is not fully attained. Current research efforts are focused on new therapeutic strategies that will increase the effectiveness of androgen withdrawal and delay recurrence. We used a syngeneic pseudo‐orthotropic mouse model of prostate cancer to test the efficacy of combining androgen withdrawal with FDA‐approved COX‐2 inhibitor celecoxib.
Resource Recovery of Spent Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials by a Supercritical Carbon Dioxide System

Abstract:The increasing global market size of high-energy storage devices due to the boom in electric vehicles and portable electronics has caused the battery industry to produce a lot of waste lithium-ion batteries. The liberation and de-agglomeration of cathode material are the necessary procedures to improve the recycling derived from spent lithium-ion batteries, as well as enabling the direct recycling pathway. In this study, the supercritical (SC) CO2 was innovatively adapted to enable the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) based on facilitating the interaction with a binder and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) co-solvent. The results show that the optimum experimental conditions to liberate the cathode particles are processing at a temperature of 70 °C and 80 bar pressure for a duration of 20 min. During the treatment, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was dissolved in the SC fluid system and collected in the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), as detected by the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). The liberation yield of the cathode from the current collector reaches 96.7% under optimal conditions and thus, the cathode particles are dispersed into smaller fragments. Afterwards, PVDF can be precipitated and reused. In addition, there is no hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas emission due to binder decomposition in the suggested process. The proposed SC-CO2 and co-solvent system effectively separate the PVDF from Li-ion battery electrodes. Thus, this approach is promising as an alternative pre-treatment method due to its efficiency, relatively low energy consumption, and environmental benign features.

Abstract:The environmentally-friendly and efficient separation of cathode materials from aluminum (Al) foil is crucial in the recycling process of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for production of new ones. Here we report a new strategy for such separation. The strategy is based on the combination of a newly-developed green deep eutectic solvent (DES) assisted with microwave treatment to decompose binders in spent LIBs cathode materials. Using this strategy we have achieved a 100 % peeling-off rate of cathode materials from Al foil. The optimum reaction condition for the peeling-off is found as follows: a temperature of 120 °C, a duration of 8 min, and a molar ratio of choline chloride (ChCl): ethylene glycol (EG) of 1: 2. The DES system can be reused up to 9 times. Both the experimental results and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicate that DES effectively reacts with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer chains, thereby facilitating the separation of active materials from Al foil. The separation mechanism is ascribed to the dissolution of PVDF by the DES through two reaction paths: 1) the formation of C = C bonds during degradation; 2) the formation of C = O bonds during further oxidation. The established separation strategy is of great promise for industrial applications owing to its environmental-friendliness and high-efficiency.

Abstract:The stepwise extraction of critical metals from spent LiNixCoyMnzO2 lithium-ion batteries (NCM LIBs) has received particular attention for efficient resource recycling. In present paper, Ca(OH)2 was used as an additive in the pyrolysis process to realize the stepwise recovery of critical metals from spent NCM LIBs. During the Ca(OH)2 assisted pyrolysis, lithium in the NCM was converted into LiOH, Li2O, Li2CO3 and LiF. Under optimal conditions, exceeded 93 % of lithium can be extracted preferentially by water leaching without additional additives and the recovery efficiencies of nickel, cobalt and manganese reached 99 % by subsequent acid leaching. Furthermore, LiOH·H2O was successfully prepared by evaporation and crystallization of lithium leachate. The addition of Ca(OH)2 could achieve the in-situ fixation of harmful pyrolytic gas, the transformation of lithium phase and reduction of cathode materials, which promoted the lithium leaching. This study provides an environmentally-friendly and competitive process for recycling spent NCM LIBs by pyrolysis.

Abstract:Current Li-ion battery (LIB) recycling methods exhibit the disadvantages of low metal recovery efficiencies and high levels of pollution and energy consumption. Here, products generated via the in-situ catalytic pyrolysis of bamboo sawdust (BS) were utilized to regulate the crystal phase and nanoscale size of the NCM cathode to enhance the selective Li extraction and leaching efficiencies of other valuable metals from spent LIBs. The catalytic effect of the NCM cathode significantly promoted the release of gases from BS pyrolysis. These gases (H2, CO, and CH4) finally transformed the crystal phase of the NCM cathode from LiNixCoyMnzO2 into (Ni-Co/MnO/Li2CO3)/C. The size of the spent NCM cathode material was reduced approximately 31.7-fold (from 4.1 μm to 129.2 nm) after roasting. This could be ascribed to the in-situ catalytic decomposition of aromatic compounds generated via the primary pyrolysis of BS into C and H2 on the surface of the cathode material, resulting in the formation of the nanoscale composite (Ni-Co/MnO/Li2CO3)/C. This process enabled the targeted control of the crystal phase and nanoscale size of the material. Water leaching studies revealed a remarkable selective Li extraction efficiency of 99.27 %, and sulfuric acid leaching experiments with a concentration of 2 M revealed high extraction efficiencies of 99.15 % (Ni), 93.87 % (Co), and 99.46 % (Mn). Finally, a novel mechanism involving synergistic thermo-reduction and carbon modification for crystal phase regulation and nanoscale control was proposed. This study provides a novel concept for use in enhancing the recycling of valuable metals from spent LIBs utilizing biomass waste and practices the concept of "treating waste with waste".

Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the serum concentration of angiogenic factors (vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF; transforming growth factor beta, TGF-β1; hepatic growth factor, HGF; basic fibroblast growth factor, bFGF; tumor necrosis factor alpha, TNF-α; soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1, sVEGF-R1; soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2, sVEGF-R2), the relationships among them and to assess the relation of their levels with the applied therapy in 48 females with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE; 37 long-term treated +11 newly diagnosed). The control group consisted of 24 healthy women. A statistically significant increase of sVEGF-R2 and significant decrease of sVEGF-R1 were observed in the subgroup of newly diagnosed SLE patients as compared to the control subjects. No significant differences were found between serum angiogenic factors in the long-term treated subgroup and the control, the long-term treated subgroup and the newly diagnosed SLE patients after a 3-month treatment, and the subgroup of newly diagnosed SLE patients before therapy and after a 3-month treatment. The significant decrease in the serum of sVEGF-R2 was revealed in the subgroup treated for a long-time as compared to the subgroup of newly diagnosed untreated SLE patients. The analysis of relationships between serum concentration of sVEGF-R1 and other cytokines levels revealed positive correlation with concentration of VEGF and TNF-α in the total group of patients. In the newly diagnosed untreated subgroup, a strong positive correlation between concentration of sVEGF-R1 and bFGF was observed. Furthermore, a moderate positive correlation between concentration of sVEGF-R1 and the level of VEGF was revealed in the long-term treated patients. The association between sVEGF-R2 and HGF was also noted in this subgroup. The obtained data suggest the necessity of further investigations to determine the importance of angiogenic factors in pathogenesis and therapy of SLE.
