Abstract:This study focuses on the analysis of the displacements generated in 3D-printed acoustic guitar tops. Specifically, the influence of 3D printing direction parameters on the vibrational behavior of a guitar top designed for polylactic acid (PLA) by analyzing five points of the top surface at a reduced scale. For this purpose, finite element tests and laboratory experiments have been carried out to support the study. After analyzing the results, it can be affirmed that the vibrational response in reduced-scale top plates can be modified and controlled by varying the printing direction angle in additive manufacturing, providing relevant information about the displacement in the vibrational response of PLA acoustic guitars. Furthermore, this work shows that the behavior of a specific acoustic guitar design can be characterized according to a specific need.

Abstract:Musical instrument making is often considered a mysterious form of art, its secrets still escaping scientific quantification. There is not yet a formula to make a good instrument, so historical examples are regarded as the pinnacle of the craft. This is the case of Stradivari's violins or Torres guitars that serve as both models and examples to follow. Geometric copies of these instruments are still the preferred way of building new ones, yet reliably making acoustic copies of them remains elusive. One reason for this is that the variability of the wood used for instruments makes for a significant source of uncertainty-no two pieces of wood are the same. In this article, using state-of-the-art methodologies, we show a method for matching the vibrational response of two guitar top plates made with slightly different materials. To validate our method, we build two guitar soundboards: one serving as a reference and the second acting as a copy to which we apply model-predicted geometry variations. The results are twofold. Firstly, we can experimentally validate the predictive capabilities of our numerical model regarding geometry changes. Secondly, we can significantly reduce the deviation between the two plates by these precisely predicted geometry variations. Although applied to guitars here, the methodology can be extended to other instruments, e.g. violins, in a similar fashion. The implications of such a methodology for the craft could be far-reaching by turning instrument-making more into a science than artistic craftsmanship and paving the way to accurately copy historical instruments of a high value.

Abstract:3D printing technique is currently one of the promising emerging technologies. It is used in many areas of human activity, including acoustic applications. This paper focuses on studying the sound reflection behavior of four different types of 3D-printed open-porous polylactic acid (PLA) material structures, namely cartesian, octagonal, rhomboid and starlit structures. Sound reflection properties were evaluated by means of the normal incidence sound reflection coefficient based on the transfer function method using an acoustic impedance tube. In this study, various factors affecting the sound reflection performance of the investigated PLA samples were evaluated. It can be concluded that the sound reflection behavior of the tested PLA specimens was strongly affected by different factors. It was influenced, not only by the type of 3D-printed open-porous material structure, but also by the excitation frequency, the total volume porosity, the specimen thickness, and the air gap size behind the tested specimen inside the acoustic impedance tube.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate the impact of different printing parameters on the free vibration characteristics of 3D printed cantilever beams. Through a comprehensive analysis of material extrusion (ME) variables such as extrusion rate, printing pattern and layer thickness, the study seeks to enhance the understanding of how these parameters influence the vibrational properties, particularly the natural frequency, of printed components. Design/methodology/approach The experimental design involves conducting a series of experiments using a central composite design approach to gather data on the vibrational response of ABS cantilever beams under diverse ME parameters. These parameters are systematically varied across different levels, facilitating a thorough exploration of their effects on the vibrational behavior of the printed specimens. The collected data are then used to develop a predictive model leveraging a hybrid artificial neural network (ANN)/ particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach, which combines the strengths of ANN in modeling complex relationships and PSO in optimizing model parameters. Findings The developed ANN/PSO hybrid model demonstrates high accuracy in predicting the natural frequency of 3D printed cantilever beams, with a correlation ratio (R) of 0.9846 when tested against experimental data. Through iterative fine-tuning with PSO, the model achieves a low mean square error (MSE) of 1.1353e-5, underscoring its precision in estimating the vibrational characteristics of printed specimens. Furthermore, the model's transformation into a regression model enables the derivation of surface response characteristics governing the vibration properties of 3D printed objects in response to input parameters, facilitating the identification of optimal parameter configurations for maximizing vibration characteristics in 3D printed products. Originality/value This study introduces a novel predictive model that combines ANNs with PSO to analyze the vibrational behavior of 3D printed ABS cantilever beams produced under various ME parameters. By integrating these advanced methodologies, the research offers a pioneering approach to precisely estimating the natural frequency of 3D printed objects, contributing to the advancement of predictive modeling in additive manufacturing.

Abstract:Abstract In recent times, Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been applied rapidly in almost all fields. This study was conducted to apply the additive manufacturing into an acoustic application by 3D printing the Micro-Perforated Panels (MPP) through Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) made of Polylactic Acid (PLA) reinforced with wood fibers. MPP were fabricated by altering its perforation volume. Later, the effect of perforation volume on acoustic absorption of the fabricated MPP was measured using the two-microphone impedance tube method as per ISO 10534-2 standard. The result shows altering the perforation volume affects the acoustic absorption of the MPP. MPP with a thickness of 2 mm and a perforation diameter of 0.2 mm shows the maximum sound absorption coefficient of 0.93 at 2173 Hz. It is made possible to absorb the 3D printed MPP made of natural fiber reinforced composite at different spectrums by altering the perforation volume.

Abstract:Even though the influence of the printing direction on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed samples by fused filament fabrication is established in the literature, very little is known about mechanical and electrical coupling. In this study, electrically conductive polylactic acid filled with carbon black particles undergoes monotonic and repeated progressive tensile loading to better understand the influence of the printing direction on the electro-mechanical properties of three-dimensional-printed samples. The objective is to analyse the electro-mechanical behaviour of this composite for its potential application as an actuator. The classical laminate theory is also applied to evaluate the relevance of this theory in predicting the mechanical characteristics of this material. In addition, a comprehensive damage analysis is performed using acoustic emission, infrared thermography, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray microcomputed tomography imaging. Results show that the degradation of the mechanical and electrical properties is highly influenced by the printing direction. The appearance and development of crazes in 0° filaments are highlighted and quantified. The conclusions drawn by this study underline the interest in using longitudinal and unidirectional printing directions to improve the conductive path within the samples. Furthermore, the evolution of the resistance throughout the experiments emphasizes the need to control the implemented voltage in the design of future electro-thermally triggered actuators.

Abstract:While traditional membrane-type acoustic metamaterials act as effective lightweight sound insulation materials, their geometries can neither be easily customized nor incorporated into other acoustic designs in a single workflow. Here, we leverage our established techniques at 3-D printing thin membranes to create custom acoustic metamaterials with tailored performance that can be easily implemented into other acoustic designs without any post-processing. In this study, we present the workflow to additively manufacture flexible membranes with added textural features using low-cost extrusion-based printing methods. Using a custom G-code, we print membranes with controlled mass, stiffness, and porosity while superimposing various surface pattern designs. Using a four-microphone normal-incidence impedance tube setup, we demonstrate the effect of each parameter on the membrane’s sound transmission loss behavior and compare the results against traditional acoustic mass law.

Abstract:Sound-absorbing panels are widely used in the acoustic design of aircraft parts, buildings and vehicles as well as in sound insulation and absorption in areas with heavy traffic. This paper studied the acoustic properties of sound-absorbing panels manufactured with three nozzle diameters (0.4 mm, 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm) by 3D printing from three types of polylactic acid filaments (Grey Tough PLA; Black PLA Pro; Natural PLA) and with six internal configurations with labyrinthine zigzag channels (Z1 and Z2). The absorption coefficient of the sample with the Z2 pattern, a 5.33 mm height, a 0.6 mm nozzle diameter and with Black PLA Pro showed the maximum value (α = 0.93) for the nozzle diameter of 0.6 mm. Next in position were the three samples with the Z1 pattern (4 mm height) made from all three materials used and printed with a nozzle diameter of 0.4 mm with a sound absorption coefficient value (α = 0.91) at 500 Hz. The highest value of the sound transmission loss (56 dB) was found for the sample printed with a nozzle size of 0.8 mm with the Z2 pattern (8 mm height) and with Black PLA Pro. The extruded material, the nozzle diameter and the internal configuration had a significant impact on the acoustic performance of the 3D-printed samples.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing, such as 3D printing, offers unparalleled opportunities for rapid prototyping of complex three-dimensional objects, but typically requires simultaneous building of solid supports to minimize deformation and ensure contact with the printing surface. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the concept of material extrusion on an "air bed", a judiciously engineered acoustic field that supports the material by contactless radiation force. We study the dynamics of polylactic acid filament (PLA), a commonly used material in 3D printing, as it interacts with the acoustic potential during extrusion. We develop numerical models to determine optimal transducer arrangements and printing conditions, and we build and demonstrate a concept prototype that integrates a commercial 3D printer and open-source control code. Our results point towards alternative, contactless support mechanisms with potential benefits such as fewer surface defects, less material waste, lower cost, and reduced manufacturing time. These features could become crucial as additive manufacturing continues to evolve into a foundational tool in engineering and beyond.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to reveal the influences of three-dimensional (3D) printing parameters such as layer heights (0.1 mm, 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm), infill rates (40, 70 and 100%) and geometrical property as tapered angle (0, 0.25 and 0.50) on vibrational behavior of 3D-printed polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) tapered beams with fused filament fabrication (FFF) method. Design/methodology/approach In this performance, all test specimens were modeled in AutoCAD 2020 software and then 3D-printed by FFF. The effects of printing parameters on the natural frequencies of 3D-printed PET-G beams with different tapered angles were also analyzed experimentally, and numerically (finite element analysis) via Ansys APDL 16 program. In addition to vibrational properties, tensile strength, elasticity modulus, hardness, and surface roughness of the 3D-printed PET-G parts were examined. Findings It can be stated that average surface roughness values ranged between 1.63 and 6.91 μm. In addition, the highest and lowest hardness values were found as 68.6 and 58.4 Shore D. Tensile strength and elasticity modulus increased with the increase of infill rate and decrease of the layer height. In conclusion, natural frequency of the 3D-printed PET-G beams went up with higher infill rate values though no critical change was observed for layer height and a change in tapered angle fluctuated the natural frequency values significantly. Research limitations/implications The influence of printing parameters on the vibrational properties of 3D-printed PET-G beams with different tapered angles was carried out and the determination of these effects is quite important. On the other hand, with the addition of glass or carbon fiber reinforcements to the PET-G filaments, the material and vibrational properties of the parts can be examined in future works. Practical implications As a result of this study, it was shown that natural frequencies of the 3D-printed tapered beams from PET-G material can be predicted via finite element analysis after obtaining material data with the help of mechanical/physical tests. In addition, the outcome of this study can be used as a reference during the design of parts that are subjected to vibration such as turbine blades, drone arms, propellers, orthopedic implants, scaffolds and gears. Social implications It is believed that determination of the effect of the most used 3D printing parameters (layer height and infill rate) and geometrical property of tapered angle on natural frequencies of the 3D-printed parts will be very useful for researchers and engineers; especially when the importance of resonance is known well. Originality/value When the literature efforts are scanned in depth, it can be seen that there are many studies about mechanical or wear properties of the 3D-printed parts. However, this is the first study which focuses on the influences of the both 3D printing parameters and tapered angles on the vibrational behaviors of the tapered PET-G beams produced with material extrusion based FFF method. In addition, obtained experimental results were also supported with the performed finite element analysis.

Abstract:Additive technologies are continually evolving and are crucial in numerous industries, including medical, aerospace, and automotive, but they can also play an important role in the prototyping phase. Due to additive manufacturing, amateurs and enthusiasts can construct simple projects as well as large projects with specialized usage in specific applications. When it comes to complex pieces, traditional manufacturing technologies such as milling, chipping, drilling, and so on have specific constraints, often need even additional production processes to complete the item. All of these constraints can be solved with additive technologies. This work investigates Fused Deposit Modeling (FDM) printing of many specimens with varying properties in order to analyze PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) material behavior following tensile testing. The collected findings will be analyzed in order to determine the specimens with the most significant behavior according on the modified parameters.

Abstract:Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is an extrusion-based AM process that is widely used due to its cost-effectiveness and user friendly. However, FDM also has some limitations such as the appearance of seam lines between layers and the production of excess material residue leading to poor surface finish, poor bonding between layers and porosity. This paper presents the findings on the application of ultrasonic vibration in an open-source FDM 3D printer to investigate its effect on the mechanical properties and microstructure of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and Polylactic Acid (PLA) samples. Two units of ultrasonic piezoelectric transducer were clamped horizontally on the surface of the 3D printer platform. The ultrasonic vibration was transmitted directly to the platform while the sample received vibration with a specific frequency while the printing process commences. Two process parameters, namely build orientation and ultrasonic vibration were selected to analyze their significance and optimization on the mechanical properties and the microstructure of the printed samples. High compressive and low surface roughness are required to have the best properties for the printed sample. Therefore, the optimization parameters are performed with these settings where the compressive strength is maximized and the surface roughness is minimized. The result shows that the overall compressive strength in ABS and PLA samples created in the Z-axis orientation is higher than in the X-axis orientation. However, the compressive strength of ABS and PLA samples is not much different after the ultrasonic vibration was applied during the printing process. The microstructure analysis shows that bonding between the layers is similar when applying ultrasonic vibration for both ABS and PLA samples. Furthermore, the result indicates that the surface roughness increased at 10 kHz and then decreased or became smoother at 20 kHz for both ABS and PLA material samples. The analysis shows that the build orientation significantly affects the compressive strength in ABS and PLA samples. However, the ultrasonic vibration has no considerable impact. In surface roughness, the build orientation and ultrasonic vibration significantly affect ABS samples. However, the PLA samples are only slightly affected. The optimum parameters for both materials are found where Z-axis orientation and 0 kHz of the ultrasonic vibration samples gave the best compressive strength and surface roughness value.

Abstract:This paper presents a comparative study of the tensile mechanical behaviour of pieces produced using the Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) additive manufacturing technique with respect to the two types of thermoplastic material most widely used in this technique: polylactide (PLA) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The aim of this study is to compare the effect of layer height, infill density, and layer orientation on the mechanical performance of PLA and ABS test specimens. The variables under study here are tensile yield stress, tensile strength, nominal strain at break, and modulus of elasticity. The results obtained with ABS show a lower variability than those obtained with PLA. In general, the infill percentage is the manufacturing parameter of greatest influence on the results, although the effect is more noticeable in PLA than in ABS. The test specimens manufactured using PLA perform more rigidly and they are found to have greater tensile strength than ABS. The bond between layers in PLA turns out to be extremely strong and is, therefore, highly suitable for use in additive technologies. The methodology proposed is a reference of interest in studies involving the determination of mechanical properties of polymer materials manufactured using these technologies.

Abstract:The advantages of 3D printing technology will continue to ensure the growth and importance of this manufacturing technique. Improving the mechanical properties and the understanding of the anisotropic behavior of 3D printed parts are some of the main challenges of Additive Manufacturing. The aim of this work is to study the effect of printing speed on the orthotropic behavior of polylactic acid (PLA) manufactured by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), also known as material extrusion (ME). 80 tensile tests were made on samples printed with printing speeds from 40 to 145 mm/s, and print directions were longitudinal and transverse. A new numerical method based on a trial of finite element simulations is proposed to find the Poisson's ratios of the orthotropic PLA manufactured by FDM. The mesh was made with Gmsh® and processing with Calculix®. The PLA was simulated as an elastic orthotropic material. Experimental measurements and numerical analysis show that the Poisson’s ratio perpendicular to the load decreases lightly with the printing speed and changes strongly with the print direction. The new numerical method proposed describes exactly the mechanical behavior of 3D printed parts manufactured by FDM with a longitudinal concentric fill partner, therefore the elastic behavior of 3D printed parts of PLA manufactured by FDM can be simulated as Elastic Orthotropic Material.

Abstract:3D-printed HA-PLA composites have attracted much attention because of their excellent biodegradability and osteointegration properties. However, HA particles negatively affect the mechanical properties of the composite parts. In this study, ultrasonic vibration-assisted 3D printing was used to improve the mechanical properties of HA-PLA composite specimens, and the effects of different infill angles and ultrasonic vibration power on the mechanical properties were investigated. The results demonstrated that the degradation and anisotropy of the mechanical properties of HA-PLA composites were alleviated by the use of ultrasonic vibration. By applying the ultrasonic vibration, the tensile and flexural strengths of the 20 wt% HA-PLA specimens fabricated with a 90° infill angle demonstrated the largest improvement of 104.3% and 112.7%, respectively. The high-frequency ultrasonic vibration waves promoted the spreading and fusion of the extruded materials, thereby reducing overlapping voids within the specimens and improving the interface bonding strength, also facilitated the refinement and dispersibility of the HA particles, which inhibited the formation of stress concentrations within the specimens and ultimately improved the mechanical properties. The printing process developed in this study can also be adapted to other particle (or other reinforcement types) reinforced composite to improve their mechanical performance.

Sound Absorption Performance and Mechanical Properties of the 3D-Printed Bio-Degradable Panels

Abstract:The 3D printing process allows complex structures to be obtained with low environmental impact using biodegradable materials. This work aims to develop and acoustically characterize 3D-printed panels using three types of materials, each manufactured at five infill densities (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) with three internal configurations based on circular, triangular, and corrugated profiles. The highest absorption coefficient values (α = 0.93) were obtained from the acoustic tests for the polylactic acid material with ground birch wood particles in the triangular configuration with an infill density of 40%. The triangular profile showed the best acoustic performance for the three types of materials analysed and, from the point of view of the mechanical tests, it was highlighted that the same triangular configuration presented the highest resistance both to compression (40 MPa) and to three-point bending (50 MPa). The 40% and 60% infill density gave the highest absorption coefficient values regardless of the material analyzed. The mechanical tests for compression and three-point bending showed higher strength values for samples manufactured from simple polylactic acid filament compared to samples manufactured from ground wood particles. The standard defects of 3D printing and the failure modes of the interior configurations of the 3D-printed samples could be observed from the microscopic analysis of the panels. Based on the acoustic results and the determined mechanical properties, one application area for these types of 3D-printed panels could be the automotive and aerospace industries.

Abstract:This research investigates the influence of the shape of 3D printed metastructures on sound absorption performance, focusing on three distinct configurations inspired by nature: honeycomb, spiderweb, and gyroid. The objectives involve designing and producing sound-absorbing structures using the 3D printing Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) method. Simultaneously, the study analyzes and compares their sound absorption performance by considering the sound absorption coefficient and the noise reduction coefficient (NRC) for each pore shape. Using computer-aided software, the three different pore shapes were designed and produced using Polylactic Acid (PLA) material through FDM 3D printing. Each design was replicated at three different thicknesses: 10mm, 20mm, and 30mm, all with a diameter of 94mm. The sound absorption coefficient of the samples was evaluated through impedance tube experiments, collecting data for alpha (α) from 250 Hz to 2000 Hz. Subsequently, NRC values were calculated for four different frequencies: 250Hz, 500Hz, 1000Hz, and 2000Hz, ensuring a comprehensive analysis. Results indicate that the gyroid structure exhibited the highest overall sound absorption coefficient across the tested frequency range, followed by the spider-web and honeycomb structures. Additionally, the 30mm thickness demonstrated greater sound-absorbing performance than the 20mm and 10mm thicknesses. These outcomes provide valuable insights into the sound absorption capabilities of 3D printed metastructures, highlighting the superior performance of the gyroid structure. Understanding the impact of pore shape and thickness on sound absorption performance contributes to the development of acoustically optimized materials for various applications

Abstract:The evolution of fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology, initially restricted to the manufacturing of prototypes, has led to its application in the manufacture of finished functional products with excellent mechanical properties. However, FFF technology entails drawbacks in aspects, such as dimensional and geometric precision, and surface finish. These aspects are crucial for the assembly and service life of functional parts, with geometric qualities lagging far behind the optimum levels obtained by conventional manufacturing processes. A further shortcoming is the proliferation of low cost FFF 3D printers with low quality mechanical components, and malfunctions that have a critical impact on the quality of finished products. FFF product quality is directly influenced by printer settings, material properties in terms of cured layers, and the functional mechanical efficiency of the 3D printer. This paper analyzes the effect of the build orientation (Bo), layer thickness (Lt), feed rate (Fr) parameters, and plate-extruder movements on the dimensional accuracy, flatness error, and surface texture of polylactic acid (PLA) using a low cost open-source FFF 3D printer. The mathematical modelling of geometric properties was performed using artificial neural networks (ANN). The results showed that thinner layer thickness generated lower dimensional deviations, and feed rate had a minor influence on dimensional accuracy. The flatness error and surface texture showed a quasi-linear behavior correlated to layer thickness and feed rate, with alterations produced by 3D printer malfunctions. The mathematical models provide a comprehensive analysis of the geometric behavior of PLA processing by FFF, in order to identify optimum print settings for the processing of functional components.

Abstract:3-Dimension (3D) printers are increasingly being used in high-tech industrial applications technology, because they can produce sophisticated products by laminating materials with less time and cost compared to cutting processing, such as conventional machine tools. However, since the reliability evaluation criteria and method for laminated manufacturing products are not clear, accidents cannot be prevented when 3D printed laminates are used as structures and machined parts. In this paper, ultrasonic wave propagation characteristics were evaluated on the specimens manufactured by laminating acrylonitrile butadiene styrene resin materials with a stereo lithography apparatus 3D printer using the ultrasonic inspection method among non-destructive techniques. Specimens were laminated in units of 0.1 mm, and thicknesses of 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mm were applied as variables. In addition, the ultrasonic characteristics according to laminating direction were analyzed by laminating diagonally and vertically, including laminating in the horizontal direction, and defect specimens were produced to check whether defects were read. It was found that the ultrasonic velocity of the horizontally laminated specimen having a thickness of less than 4 mm was slower than the ultrasonic reference velocity, and that the ultrasonic velocity was affected according to the laminated direction. In addition, by arranging the defect location of the specimen differently, it was determined whether the defect was detected, and whether it was possible to check the location. Based on the results of this study, it will be possible to broadly apply this technique to advanced industrial technologies through evaluation of the condition and reliability of laminated manufacturing products manufactured with 3D printers.

Abstract:Traditional membrane-type acoustic metamaterials have been proven to act as effective lightweight sound insulation materials. However, their geometries cannot be easily incorporated into other acoustic designs in a single workflow. Here, we leverage the enhanced customizability that additive manufacturing provides by introducing 3D printed membrane-type metamaterials that can one day be seamlessly incorporated into a variety of acoustic designs without the need for post-processing. In this study, we present the fabrication workflow to 3D print membranes of varying thicknesses and offer an analysis on print quality. Using a four-microphone normal-incidence impedance tube, we provide preliminary results on the sound transmission loss behavior of these membrane-type metamaterials. Our results show the membranes are fabricated without any significant holes or gaps, and their thicknesses can be reliably controlled.
