Abstract:P2-type layered structure manganese-based materials have been reported as the most promising candidate for practical applications of sodium ion batteries because of their high capacity, facile fabrication, low cost, and environmental friendliness. In this work, a novel Cobalt-free layered P2-type Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 cathode material was designed using cation potential, and the cathode material was successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction method. We present an in-depth investigation of the effect of Mg doping on the electrochemical performance and structural stability of Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 by comparing series compositions Na0.67Ni0.33–xMgxMn0.67O2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2). The Mg-doping sample Na0.67Ni0.18Mg0.15Mn0.67O2 delivered an initial discharge capacity of 123 mAh·g–1 at 0.1 C in the potential range from 2.0 to 4.3 V. The capacity of the material remained at 92% after 100 cycles at a rate of 0.1 C. Abstract:The Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.5−xMgxO2 compound with x = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.1, 0.15 was synthesized by solid state reaction. The structure of the samples gradually transformed from P2 phase to O3 phase with the increase of Mg content. The hybrid P2/O3 phase transition metal oxides with high performance was prepared to promote the application of sodium-ion batteries. Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.46Mg0.04O2 exhibited a hybrid P2/O3 phase structure, which showed high electrochemical performance. Due to the synergy of P2 and O3 phase, the conductivity for the migration of Na ions in the experimental cell, exhibited the highest ion diffusivity. Here, Fe and Mn-based transition metal oxide materials as a cathode material can have great application potential for sodium-ion batteries and can be one of the most promising alternatives to the limited lithium-ion battery.

Abstract:Herein, we report a series of O3-type Na(Ni1/3Mn1/3Fe1/3)1-xAlxO2 (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) oxides as sodium-ion battery cathode materials synthesized via spray pyrolysis method. The structure, morphology, and electrochemical performance of Na(Ni1/3Mn1/3Fe1/3)1-xAlxO2 (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) are characterized by XRD, SEM, CV, and galvanostatic charge and discharge tests, respectively. Na(Ni1/3Mn1/3Fe1/3)0.95Al0.05O2 delivers an initial discharge capacity of 145.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and exhibits a favorable reversible capacity about 128.4 mAh g−1 after 80 cycles at 0.2 C, with the capacity retention of 77.5% at the voltage range of 2.0 to 4.2 V. XPS analysis reveals that Al-doping could alleviate the Jahn-Teller effect caused by Mn3+ and enhance the structural stability of layered oxides. The results confirm that a small quantity of (5 at. %) Al-doping improves the structural stability of the material, therefore leading to the excellent electrochemical performance.
Facile design and synthesis of Co-free layered O3-type NaNi0.2Mn0.2Fe0.6O2 as promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:O3-type layered oxides have received extensive attention as a class of battery layered materials. However, problems such as rate capability, stable period difference, and voltage deviation of these oxides hinder their practical application. The method of orthogonal experiment was adopted, and the reaction temperature, raw material concentration, reaction time and ammonia concentration were regarded as single factors. Finally, the optimal conditions for synthesizing cathode materials were obtained as follows: the reaction temperature was 50 °C, the raw material concentration was 0.2 mol·L-1, the reaction time was 16 h, and the ammonia concentration was 1 mol·L-1. A layered oxide cathode material Co-free NaNi0.2Mn0.2Fe0.6O2 with high iron content was synthesized by co-precipitation method. When the charging voltage is greater than 4 V, the higher the utilization rate of sodium ions, the higher the energy density. But the higher the cut-off voltage, the worse the cycle stability. Due to the low manganese content and the high iron content, the average oxidation state of manganese is low. 57Fe-M o ¨ ssbauer spectroscopy showed that the synthesized samples had high spin Fe3+ . Under the control of the optimal synthesis conditions, the specific discharge capacity of the reaction increased from 105 mAhּ·g−1 to 112.5 mAhּ·g−1 at 0.1C.

Abstract:A series of Cu-doped layered P2-type Na0.67Ni0.33-xCuxMn0.67O2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.33) were fabricated using a convenient solid-state method and studied as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. The microstructure and morphology of the cathode materials were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The electrochemical characteristics of Na0.67Ni0.33-xCuxMn0.67O2 samples have been investigated systematically and it shows good capacity retention, cycling stability and rate performance by introducing electrochemically active Cu2+ ions as substituents. When x= 0.15, the sample delivers an initial discharge capacity of 120 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C in the voltage range 2–4.3 V with a capacity retention of 78% after 200 cycles, and a reversible capacity of 62 mAh g-1 can be obtained at a high current rate of 20 C. Compared with the pristine compound, the enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the Cu2+ inserted into the transition metal (TM) layer, which stabilizes the P2-phase structure against P2-O2 phase transition when charging to high voltage. Meanwhile, the presence of copper also contributes to the reversible capacity based on the Cu2+/Cu3+ redox reaction. This strategy can improve the cyclability and rate performance by enhancing the stability between TM layers.

Abstract:NaxMn1/3Fe1/3Ni1/3O2 (x = 2/3 and 1) layered oxides are synthesized and applied as positive electrode materials for sodium batteries. The crystal structure of the material changes from the O3 single phase to P2/O3 mixed phases as the Na content decreases from 1 to 2/3. The mixed-phases Na2/3Mn1/3Fe1/3Ni1/3O2 shows superior cycling performance compared to the single-phase NaMn1/3Fe1/3Ni1/3O2 due to different redox process and structural change that are demonstrated by operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Na2/3Mn1/3Fe1/3Ni1/3O2 experiences redox reactions of Ni3+|Ni4+ and Fe3+|Fe4+ with inactive Mn ions during the charge/discharge processes, while the NaMn1/3Fe1/3Ni1/3O2 undergoes deeper redox reactions from Ni2+|Ni3+|Ni4+ and Fe3+|Fe4+ that Mn ions are irreversibly oxidized to Mn4+ in the 1st charge process. In addition, the mixed-phases material has smaller changes in the transition metal oxygen bond lengths during cycling, corresponding to less distortions of TMO6 units in the crystal structure. The better reversibility of the redox reactions and the occurrence of less structural changes are both responsible for the enhanced cycling performance obtained from the mixed-phases material compared to the single-phase material. These results strengthen the understanding of interactions of transition metals in the layered cathode and provide guidelines for designing positive electrode materials for sodium batteries.

Abstract:In this study, a modification strategy was proposed and implemented to replace the P2‐type Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 with Fe. Fe substitution can suppress P2−O2 phase transition with a stable P2 phase during charging and discharging. Additionally, it also suppresses Na+/vacancy ordering, expands the slab‐spacing of the structure . Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 (NNMO) is one of the most promising cathodes for Sodium‐ion batteries. However, due to undesired P2−O2 phase transition at high voltage during Na+ extraction, its cyclic stability and coulomb efficiency are greatly adversely affected. Herein, electrochemically active Fe3+ ions substituted Na0.67Ni0.23Fe0.1Mn0.67O2 samples were prepared by both sol‐gel method (NNFMO‐SG) and solid phase method (NNFMO‐SP). It has been found that Fe substitution can suppress P2−O2 phase transition with a stable P2 phase during charging and discharging. Additionally, it also suppresses Na+/vacancy ordering, expands the slab‐spacing of the structure and improves the reversibility of the redox of anions. Owing to the combined advantages, NNFMO‐SG material exhibits the enhanced rate capability (70.1 mAh/g at 1000 mA/g) and excellent cycling stability (75.3 % capacity retention after 100 cycles at 200 mA/g).

Heteroatom-Substituted P2–Na 2/3 Ni 1/4 Mg 1/12 Mn 2/3 O 2 Cathode with {010} Exposing Facets Boost Anionic Activity and High-Rate Performance for Na-Ion Batteries

Abstract:As an attractive cathode candidate for sodium-ion batteries, P2-type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 is famous for its high stability in humid air, attractive capacity, and high operating voltage. However, the low Na+ transport kinetics, oxygen-redox reactions, and irreversible structural evolution at high-voltage areas hinder its practical application. Herein, a comprehensive study of a microbar P2-type Ni2/3Ni1/4Mg1/12Mn2/3O2 material with {010} facets is presented, which exhibits high reversibility of structural evolution and anionic redox activity, leading to outstanding rate capability and cyclability. The notable rate performance (53 mA h g–1 at 20 C, 2.0–4.3 V) contributed to the high exposure of {010} facets via controlling the growth orientation of the precursor, which is certified by density functional theory calculation and lattice structural analysis. Mg substitution strengthens the reversibility of anionic oxygen redox and structural evolution in high-voltage areas that was confirmed by the in situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests, leading to outstanding cyclic reversibility (68.9% after 1000 cycles at 5 C) and slowing down the voltage fading. Abstract:Na0.44Mn1-xCoxO2 (x=0, 0.01, 0.08, 0.11, 0.22, 0.33, 0.44) powders are synthesized as positive electrodes for sodium-ion batteries via a thermopolymerization method. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy are used to analyze their crystal structures and particle morphologies. Galvanostatic cell cycling is used to characterize the electrochemical properties. The Co-substitution can change the structure of Na0.44Mn1-xCoxO2 from T-type (x=0) into layered P2-type (x=0.11) or P3-type (x=0.44). For the samples synthesized under our specific conditions, the particle morphology can be used as an indicator of their crystal structures: rod-like (T-type), plate-like (P2-type) and granules (P3-type). P2-type Na0.44Mn0.89Co0.11O2 allows more Na+ intercalation into the inter-layer spacing and results in a high discharge capacity with 220mAhg−1 at 12mAg−1 in initial cycle, 180mAhg−1 after 40 cycles in the voltage range of 2.0-4.2V and a good rate performance of 104mAhg−1 at a rate of 600mAg−1 in the voltage range of 2.0-4.0V.

Abstract:Co-free cathode material is an ideal material for developing low-cost sodium ion batteries. Both O3 and P2 single-phases suffer structural degradation, resulting in irreversible structural collapse and rapid capacity decline. Compared with the single-phase crystal structure type O or P, the composite phase crystal structure has attracted the attention of researchers due to its superior performance advantages. Referring to the element composition and crystal structure of Li-rich cathode material, the novel biphasic P2/O3-Na1-xLixNi0.33Mn0.67O2 cathode material was synthesized by solid state method. The introduction of Li+ makes more Na+ in the material remain in the triangular prism position at high charging voltage, which will not destroy the biphasic structure and improve the stability of high rate during the cycle. At 0.1C and 20C rates, Li0.2Na0.8Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 released 132.5 and 70.1 mAh g−1 discharge specific capacities, respectively. In the deep charging and discharging status, the superior capacity retention of 80.1 % is measured even after 120 cycles of sodium ion extraction and insertion.

Abstract:A Co‐Ni‐free, poly‐elemental doping strategy (Li, Mg, and Cu) with sodium‐rich Mn‐based P2‐layered cathodes for Na+ ion storage. The sodium‐rich host structure promotes high reversible capacity with high initial coulombic efficiency, enhances structural stability, and mitigates internal stress due to volume changes. This study investigated the factual structural transformation and surficial chemistry of cathodes during charging and discharging in a half‐cell sodium‐ion battery. The rapid capacity loss attributed to irreversible phase reactions and structural instability has consistently affected the development of P2‐layered cathode materials. Moreover, the introduction of costly elements such as single or multiple dopants has failed to resolve the sustainability challenges in designing an optimal Mn‐based layered oxide cathode. This study proposes a Co‐Ni‐free, poly‐elemental doping strategy (Li, Mg, and Cu) combined with high sodium content for an Mn‐based P2‐layered cathode designed for Na+ ion storage. In situ X‐ray diffraction analysis confirms the absence of P2 – O2 phase transitions during cycling for both NLMMC87 (Na0.87Li0.1Mg0.1Mn0.7Cu0.1O2) and NLMMC77 (Na0.77Li0.1Mg0.1Mn0.7Cu0.1O2). This can be attributed to the co‐substitution of the electronegative Cu element and the stabilizing dopants Li and Mg, which suppress oxygen evolution. Simultaneously, the high sodium content within the host structure promotes high reversible capacity, enhances structural stability, and minimizes internal stress due to volume changes. Moreover, NLMMC87 demonstrates a reversible capacity of 167.9 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C (97% Coulombic efficiency) and maintains excellent stability across various current rates. Further investigations into the practical application of NLMMC87 in a sodium full cell will be a critical step toward realizing an ideal cathode for sodium‐ion batteries.

The partial substitution of Mn with Ti increases the lattice spacing without changing the lattice structure. A Na//Na[Ni0.4Fe0.2Mn0.2Ti0.2]-O-2 cell delivers a reversible capacity of 145 mA h g(-1) with excellent long cycling performance.
High-Operating Voltage, Long-Life Layered Oxides for Sodium Ion Batteries Enabled by Cosubstitution of Titanium and Magnesium

Abstract:P2-type layered oxides are considered as promising cathode materials for rechargeable sodium ion batteries, but preparing P2-type cathodes with high-operating voltage and long-life is still a big challenge. Herein, spherical P2-type cathode Na0.67Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.66Ti0.05Mg0.05O2 has been designed, and the critical roles of Ti and Mg on electrochemical performance of the cathodes are systematically investigated. The high-temperature XRD clearly exhibits the forming process of the pure phase material and suggests that the most suitable calcination temperature is 850 °C. The Ti/Mg cosubstitution does not break the long-range P2 structure and the spherical morphology of the material. In the electrochemical processes, the Na0.67Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.56Ti0.05Mg0.05O2 electrode exhibits better electrochemical performance than that of the undoped Na0.67Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.66O2. It delivers an initial reversible capacity of 151 mAh g–1 (2–4.5 V) with an average voltage of 3.8 V and exhibits a high capacity retention of 87.7% after 300 cycles at 100 mA g–1. The improved electrochemical performance benefits from the Ti/Mg cosubstitution; Ti improves the average voltage while Mg and Ti significantly mitigate the undesired P2 → O2 phase transition of the cathode, and these two elements jointly promote the development of the electrochemical performance. This strategy is also applicable to the optimization design of layered transition oxides and provides a new approach to prepare high-voltage, long-life cathodes for sodium ion batteries.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The particle pulverization induced by volume change and the disproportionation reaction of Mn3+ to Mn4+ and electrolyte-soluble Mn2+ are two major challenges for Na0.67MnO2 cathodes in Na-ion batteries. Herein, Ni and/or Fe doped Na0.67MnO2 was synthesized to suppress the particle pulverization and disproportionation reaction. The replacement of 33% Mn ions by Ni in Na0.67MnO2 can effectively reduce the particle pulverization and disproportionation of Mn3+, resulting in improved cycling stability at the cost of reduced capacity. To develop a high capacity and long cycle life cathode material, Ni in Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 is further partially substituted by Fe to generate Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2, which retains similar to 70% of its initial capacity after 900 cycles, corresponding to a very low capacity decay rate of 0.033% per cycle. To the best of our knowledge, the Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2 synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) represents one of the best cathode materials for Na-ion batteries to date. In addition, a thin layer (5 nm) of Al2O3 is deposited on the Na0.67MnO2 electrode by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to further reduce the dissolution of Mn ions and accommodate the volume change, which further extend the cycling stability of Na0.67MnO2 electrodes.

Four different chemical compositions from the group of layered oxides are synthesized with the spray drying method to receive a hierarchical structure. Material properties and electrochemical cycling are investigated. Sodium‐ion‐batteries (SIB) are a low‐cost alternative to currently used lithium‐ion batteries (LIB) but suffer from poor cycling stability. Spray drying provides porous, hierarchically structured particles of cathode active material (CAM) in large amounts, suitable for up‐scaling. Changing the chemical composition of the Na0.6Al0.11 − xNi0.22 − yFex + yMn0.66O2 layered oxides under identical synthesis conditions lead to differences in particle morphology, conductivities, sodium vacancy ordering, and phase transition, therefore influencing the electrochemical performance via several mechanisms. Here, a broad overview on these changes for samples with variable nickel and iron content is presented. With increasing iron content, the particle porosity is reduced and lower initial capacity is received for most cycling windows. Substituting half of the original Ni amount with Fe still leads to high capacities and improved cycling stability. The influence of Al as electrochemically inactive element becomes visible in stabilized cycling stability as well.

O3-Type Layered Ni-Rich Oxide: A High-Capacity and Superior-Rate Cathode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Inspired by its high-active and open layered framework for fast Li+ extraction/insertion reactions, layered Ni-rich oxide is proposed as an outstanding Na-intercalated cathode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries. An O3-type Na0.75Ni0.82Co0.12Mn0.06O2 is achieved through a facile electrochemical ion-exchange strategy in which Li+ ions are first extracted from the LiNi0.82Co0.12Mn0.06O2 cathode and Na+ ions are then inserted into a layered oxide framework. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of layered Ni-rich oxide during Na+ extraction/insertion is investigated in detail by combining ex situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. As an excellent cathode for Na-ion batteries, O3-type Na0.75Ni0.82Co0.12Mn0.06O2 delivers a high reversible capacity of 171 mAh g(-1) and a remarkably stable discharge voltage of 2.8 V during long-term cycling. In addition, the fast Na+ transport in the cathode enables high rate capability with 89 mAh g(-1) at 9 C. The as-prepared Ni-rich oxide cathode is expected to significantly break through the limited performance of current sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:P2-type Na-Ni-Mn layered oxides are potential cathode materials for energy storage in sodium-ion batteries, but have low cycling stability and limited Na storage capacity due to complex phase transitions. Herein, co-regulating vacancies and doping were implemented to address the issue, resulting in the successful synthesis of hexagonal columnar P2-Na0.5Li0.1Ni0.2Mn0.7O2 through a solid-state synthesis method. Increased interlayer spacing of Na+ can offer numerous active sites for Na+ insertion and extraction. P2-Na0.5Li0.1Ni0.2Mn0.7O2 exhibits an impressive initial discharge capacity of 139.1 mAh g−1 and 78.5 % capacity retention after 100cycles at 1.0C, which is a significant improvement compared to the pristine Na0.7Ni0.3Mn0.7O2. Overall, our study significantly boosts the electrochemical performance of P2-type materials, thus offering exciting avenues for the advancement of high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:O3-NaNi0.25Fe0.5Mn0.25O2 layered oxide is considered one of the most promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries because of its advantages, such as its large capacity and low cost. However, the practical application of this material is limited by its poor cyclic stability and insufficient rate capability. Here, a strategy to substitute the Fe3+ in NaNi0.25Fe0.5Mn0.25O2 with Al3+ is adopted to address these issues. The substitution of Fe3+ with Al3+ enhances the framework stability and phase transition reversibility of the parent NaNi0.25Fe0.5Mn0.25O2 material by forming a stronger TM-O bond, which improves the cycling stability. Moreover, partial Al3+ substitution increases the interslab distance, providing a spacious path for Na+ diffusion and resulting in fast diffusion kinetics, which lead to improved rate capability. Consequently, the target NaNi0.25Fe0.5-xAlxMn0.25O2 sample with optimal x = 0.045 exhibits a remarkable electrochemical performance in a Na-ion cell with a large reversible capacity of 131.7 mA h g-1, a stable retention of approximately 81.6% after cycling at 1C for 100 cycles, and a rate performance of 81.3 mA h g-1 at 10C. This method might pave the way for novel means of improving the electrochemical properties of layered transitional-metal oxides and provide insightful guidance for the design of low-cost cathode materials.

Abstract:In this work, Na0.6Mn0.67−xNi0.22Fe0.11+xO2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) cathode materials were synthesized by a simple solid-state method, and the influence of Fe/Mn ratio on its fine phase structure and electrochemical performance was emphatically investigated. Firstly, XRD Rietveld refinement demonstrates that proportion of P2 phase and the distance between Na layers increases via increase of Fe/Mn ratio, which is beneficial to improve the diffusion rate of sodium ions. Secondly, reduced proportion of Mn3+ and Ni3+ in the material with the increase of Fe/Mn ratio is verified via XPS data analysis, which weakens Jahn-Teller effect and improves the cyclic stability of the material. Among them, the designed Na0.6Mn0.62Ni0.22Fe0.16O2 exhibits the initial discharge specific capacity 139 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C. The reversible specific capacity of 95 mAh g-1 can be maintained even at a higher current density of 2 C. The high electrochemical performance can be contributed to the lower charge transfer resistance and the higher sodium ion diffusion coefficient, which are evidenced by EIS and GITT analysis.

Abstract:The particle pulverization induced by volume change and the disproportionation reaction of Mn to Mn and electrolyte-soluble Mn are two major challenges for Na0.67MnO2 cathodes in Na-ion batteries. Herein, Ni and/or Fe doped Na0.67MnO2 was synthesized to suppress the particle pulverization and disproportionation reaction. The replacement of 33% Mn ions by Ni in Na0.67MnO2 can effectively reduce the particle pulverization and disproportionation of Mn, resulting in improved cycling stability at the cost of reduced capacity. To develop a high capacity and long cycle life cathode material, Ni in Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 is further partially substituted by Fe to generate Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2, which retains 70% of its initial capacity after 900 cycles, corresponding to a very low capacity decay rate of 0.033% per cycle. To the best of our knowledge, the Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2 synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) represents one of the best cathode materials for Na-ion batteries to date. In addition, a thin layer (5 nm) of Al2O3 is deposited on the Na0.67MnO2 electrode by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to further reduce the dissolution of Mn ions and accommodate the volume change, which further extend the cycling stability of Na0.67MnO2 electrodes.
