Abstract:BACKGROUND Intraoperative 3D imaging with cone-beam CT (CBCT) improves assessment of implant position and reduces complications in spine surgery. It is also used for image-guided surgical techniques, resulting in improved quality of care. However, in some cases, metal artifacts can reduce image quality and make it difficult to assess pedicle screw position and reduction. PURPOSE The objective of this study was to investigate whether a change in CBCT acquisition trajectory in relation to pedicle screw position during dorsal instrumentation can reduce metal artifacts and consequently improve image quality and clinical assessability. STUDY DESIGN Experimental cadaver study. METHODS A human cadaver was instrumented with pedicle screws in the thoracic and lumbar spine region (Th11 to L5). Then, the acquisition trajectory of the CBCT (Cios Spin, Siemens, Germany) to the pedicle screws was systematically changed in 5° steps in angulation (−30° to +30°) and swivel (−25° to +25°). Subsequently, radiological evaluation was performed by 3 blinded, qualified raters on image quality using 9 questions (including anatomical structures, implant position, appearance of artifacts) with a score (1–5 points). For statistical evaluation, the image quality of the different acquisition trajectories was compared to the standard acquisition trajectory and checked for significant differences. RESULTS The angulated acquisition trajectory significantly increased the score for subjective image quality (p<.001) as well as the clinical assessability of pedicle screw position (p<.001) with particularly strong effects on subjective image quality in the vertebral pedicle region (d=1.61). Swivel of the acquisition trajectory significantly improved all queried domains of subjective image quality (p<.001) as well as clinical assessability of pedicle screw position (p<.001). CONCLUSIONS In this cadaver study, the angulation as well as the swivel of the acquisition trajectory led to a significantly improved image quality in intraoperative 3D imaging (CBCT) with a constant isocenter. The data show that maximizing the angulation/swivel angle towards 30°/25° provides the best tested subjective image quality and enhances clinical assessability. Therefore, a correct adjustment of the acquisition trajectory can help to make intraoperative revision decisions more reliably. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The knowledge of enhanced image quality by changing the acquisition trajectory in intraoperative 3D imaging can be used for the assessment of critical screw positions in spine surgery. The implementation of this knowledge requires only a minor change of the current intraoperative imaging workflow without additional technical equipment and could further reduce the need for revision surgery.

Abstract:BACKGROUND CONTEXT: To our knowledge, there is no comparison study of two different Axis-based C1 transpedicular screw trajectory (TST) designs. PURPOSE: To compare two different Axis-based C1 TST designs. STUDY DESIGN: The computed tomography (CT) morphologic analysis of the two different C1 Axis-based TST designs. METHODS: Firstly, the design of Axis C/M and related measurements were made on a work station by using neck computed tomography angiography (CTA) data of 62 patients. The central axes (Axis M and Axis C) of C1 TST were designed by multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) technique. Based on Axis M and Axis C, the following parameters were measured: (A, A'), distance between the insertion point (IP) and the midline. (B, B'), distance between IP and the inferior aspect of C1 posterior arch. (C, C'), distance between IP and the C1 anterior cortex of the lateral mass along Axis M/C. (D, D'), insertion angle (IA) based on Axis M/C. (E, E'), the narrowest width of the inner medullary cavity (IMC) along Axis M/C. RESULT: The C1 TST can be designed by MPR technique based on CT volume scan. The design of Axis C trajectory was easier to Axis M trajectory. A, A' were 20.7 +/- 1.6mm and 20.6 +/- 1.9mm. Both B, B' were 2.0 +/- 0.6mm. C, C' were 27.2 +/- 2.1mm and 27.5 +/- 2.1mm. D, D' were 9.9 +/- 5.0 degrees and 10.4 +/- 7.7 degrees. E, E' were 5.0 +/- 1.3mm and 5.4 +/- 1.4mm. Among 62 patients (124 sides), Axis C can be achieved by medial inclination, perpendicular, lateral inclination method in 81.5%, 13.7%, 4.8% sides, respectively; Axis M can be achieved by medial inclination, perpendicular, lateral inclination method in 90.3%, 8.9%, 0.8% sides, respectively. CONCLUSION: Axis C can be a reliable trajectory for C1 transpedicular screw insertion as long as there is no displaced fracture in the C1 pedicle and lateral mass. Because of the individual differences, the ideal C1 TST can be achieved by medial inclination, perpendicular or even lateral inclination method, although its inclination direction is medial in the majority of patients. Evaluation of Software-Based Metal Artifact Reduction in Intraoperative 3D Imaging of the Spine Using a Mobile Cone Beam CT

Abstract:The aim of our study was to evaluate whether software-based artifact reduction can achieve an improved image quality, using intraoperative 3D imaging in spinal surgery. A total of 49 intraoperative 3D image datasets of patients, who underwent surgery with pedicle screw placement, were retrospectively evaluated. The visibility of anatomical structures and the diameter of the pedicle screws were examined, with and without the application of the artifact reduction software. All software prototypes can improve the visibility of anatomical structures (<i>P</i> < 0.01), except MAR (metal artifact reduction) combined with IRIS (iterative reconstruction in image space) (<i>P</i> = 0.04). The algorithms MAR and MAR-2 can reduce the blooming artifacts significantly (<i>P</i> < 0.01), but SL (Shepp & Logan) cannot (<i>P</i> = 0.08–0.988). In summary, software-based artifact reduction for intraoperative 3D datasets can improve the current image quality. Additional information regarding the implant placement and the fracture reduction is therefore generated for the surgeon.

Single dose pharmacokinetics of tiaprofenic acid. Effects of food and severe renal insufficiency.

Abstract:The single oral dose pharmacokinetics of tiaprofenic acid (Surgam) has been investigated in fasting and non-fasting healthy volunteers (200 and 300 mg) and in fasting patients with severe renal insufficiency (200 mg). A dose independent pharmacokinetics of tiaprofenic acid was shown in fasting healthy volunteers and the following parameters were calculated after administration of 200 mg: tl = 0.53 +/- 0.15 h, tm = 1.28 +/- 0.19 h, cm = 27.1 micrograms/ml, ka = 2.79 +/- 0.93 h-1, lambda 2 = 1.06 +/- 0.14 h-1, t1/2 = 3.0 +/- 0.2 h, AUCl-infinity = 80 +/- 7 mg X h/l, Clt = 43.8 +/- 3.7 ml/min and V beta = 11.1 +/- 0.8 l. A small, but significant positive deviation from linearity was observed with increasing dose for cm and AUCl-infinity in non-fasting healthy volunteers, probably due to a slightly higher bioavailability of the 300 mg formulation in the non-fasting state as compared with the 200 mg formulation. Intake of food decreased cm significantly at both dosage levels from 27.1 to 19.1 micrograms/ml and from 47.9 to 39.1 micrograms/ml for 200 and 300 mg, respectively. The absorption kinetics of tiaprofenic acid was not significantly different in fasting healthy volunteers and in fasting patients with severe renal insufficiency. However, a significant increase in t1/2 and AUCl-infinity to 5.8 +/- 0.9 h and 173 +/- 34 mg X h/l, respectively, and a significant decrease in total body clearance to 25.5 +/- 5.3 ml/min were observed in this category of patients. No correlation was found between creatinine clearance and tiaprofenic acid clearance.

Abstract:This paper describes speech translation from Amharic-to-English, particularly Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) with post-editing feature and Amharic-English Statistical Machine Translation (SMT). ASR experiment is conducted using morpheme language model (LM) and phoneme acoustic model(AM). Likewise,SMT conducted using word and morpheme as unit. Morpheme based translation shows a 6.29 BLEU score at a 76.4% of recognition accuracy while word based translation shows a 12.83 BLEU score using 77.4% word recognition accuracy. Further, after post-edit on Amharic ASR using corpus based n-gram, the word recognition accuracy increased by 1.42%. Since post-edit approach reduces error propagation, the word based translation accuracy improved by 0.25 (1.95%) BLEU score. We are now working towards further improving propagated errors through different algorithms at each unit of speech translation cascading component.

Abstract:PurposeSpine surgery still remains a challenge for every spine surgeon, aware of the potential serious outcomes of misplaced instrumentation. Though many studies have highlighted that using intraoperative cone beam CT imaging and navigation systems provides higher accuracy than conventional freehand methods for placement of pedicle screws in spine surgery, few studies are concerned about how to reduce radiation exposure for patients with the use of such technology. One of the main focuses of this study is based on the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable).MethodA prospective randomized trial was conducted in the hybrid operating room between December 2015 and December 2016, including 50 patients operated on for posterior instrumented thoracic and/or lumbar spinal fusion. Patients were randomized to intraoperative 3D acquisition high-dose (standard dose) or low-dose protocol, and a total of 216 pedicle screws were analyzed in terms of screw position. Two different methods were used to measure ionizing radiation: the total skin dose (derived from the dose–area product) and the radiation dose evaluated by thermoluminescent dosimeters on the surgical field.ResultsAccording to Gertzbein and Heary classifications, low-dose protocol provided a significant higher accuracy of pedicle screw placement than the high-dose protocol (96.1 versus 92%, respectively). Seven screws (3.2%), all implanted with the high-dose protocol, needed to be revised intraoperatively. The use of low-dose acquisition protocols reduced patient exposure by a factor of five.ConclusionThis study emphasizes the paramount importance of using low-dose protocols for intraoperative cone beam CT imaging coupled with the navigation system, as it at least does not affect the accuracy of pedicle screw placement and irradiates drastically less.

Radiation dose and image quality of a Medtronic O‐arm commonly used during spine surgery, and a Philips hybrid operating room equipped with XperCT C‐arm 3D cone‐beam CT (hCBCT) are compared. The mobile O‐arm (mCBCT) offers three different radiation dose settings (low, standard, and high), for four different patient sizes (small, medium, large, and extra large). The patient's radiation dose rate is constant during the entire 3D scan. In contrast, C‐CBCT spine imaging uses three different field of views (27, 37, and 48 cm) using automatic exposure control (AEC) that modulates the patient's radiation dose rate during the 3D scan based on changing patient thickness. hCBCT uses additional x‐ray beam filtration. Small, medium, and large trunk phantoms designed to mimic spine and soft tissue were imaged to assess radiation dose and image quality of the two systems. The estimated measured “patient” dose for the small, medium, and large phantoms imaged by the mCBCT considering all the dose settings ranged from 9.4–27.6 mGy, 8.9–33.3 mGy, and 13.8–40.6 mGy, respectively. The “patient” dose values for the same phantoms imaged with hCBCT were 2.8–4.6 mGy, 5.7–10.0 mGy, and 11.0–15.2 mGy. The CNR for the small, medium, and large phantoms was 2.9 to 3.7, 2.0 to 3.0, and 2.5 to 2.6 times higher with the hCBCT system, respectively. Hounsfield unit accuracy, noise, and uniformity of hCBCT exceeded the performance of the mCBCT; spatial resolution was comparable. Added x‐ray beam filtration and AEC capability achieved clinical image quality for intraoperative spine surgery at reduced radiation dose to the patient in comparison to a reference O‐arm system without these capabilities.</p>

A Learning-based Method for Online Adjustment of C-arm Cone-Beam CT Source Trajectories for Artifact Avoidance

Abstract:During spinal fusion surgery, screws are placed close to critical nerves suggesting the need for highly accurate screw placement. Verifying screw placement on high-quality tomographic imaging is essential. C-arm Cone-beam CT (CBCT) provides intraoperative 3D tomographic imaging which would allow for immediate verification and, if needed, revision. However, the reconstruction quality attainable with commercial CBCT devices is insufficient, predominantly due to severe metal artifacts in the presence of pedicle screws. These artifacts arise from a mismatch between the true physics of image formation and an idealized model thereof assumed during reconstruction. Prospectively acquiring views onto anatomy that are least affected by this mismatch can, therefore, improve reconstruction quality. We propose to adjust the C-arm CBCT source trajectory during the scan to optimize reconstruction quality with respect to a certain task, i.e. verification of screw placement. Adjustments are performed on-the-fly using a convolutional neural network that regresses a quality index for possible next views given the current x-ray image. Adjusting the CBCT trajectory to acquire the recommended views results in non-circular source orbits that avoid poor images, and thus, data inconsistencies. We demonstrate that convolutional neural networks trained on realistically simulated data are capable of predicting quality metrics that enable scene-specific adjustments of the CBCT source trajectory. Using both realistically simulated data and real CBCT acquisitions of a semi-anthropomorphic phantom, we show that tomographic reconstructions of the resulting scene-specific CBCT acquisitions exhibit improved image quality particularly in terms of metal artifacts. Since the optimization objective is implicitly encoded in a neural network, the proposed approach overcomes the need for 3D information at run-time.

Abstract:Background: Lateral mass screw fixation is the standard for posterior cervical fusion between C3 and C6. Traditional trajectories stabilize but carry risks, including nerve root and vertebral artery injuries. Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) is gaining popularity, but trajectories present anatomical challenges. Research question: This study proposes a novel pars interarticularis screw trajectory to address these issues and enhance in-line instrumentation with cervical pedicle screws. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of reformatted cervical CT scans included 10 patients. Measurements of the pars interarticularis morphology were performed on 80 segments (C3-C6). Two pars interarticularis screw trajectories were evaluated: Trajectory A (upper outer quadrant entry, horizontal trajectory) and Trajectory B (lower outer quadrant entry, cranially pointed trajectory). These were compared to standard lateral mass and cervical pedicle screw trajectories, assessing screw lengths, angles, and potential risks to the spinal canal and transverse foramen. Results: Trajectory B showed significantly longer pars lengths (15.69 ± 0.65 mm) compared to Trajectory A (12.51 ± 0.24 mm; p < 0.01). Lateral mass screw lengths were comparable to pars interarticularis screw lengths using Trajectory B. Both trajectories provided safe angular ranges, minimizing the risk to delicate structures. Discussion: and Conclusion. Pars interarticularis screws offer a viable alternative to lateral mass screws for posterior cervical fusion, especially in MISS contexts. Trajectory B, in particular, presents a feasible and safe alternative, reducing the risk of vertebral artery and spinal cord injury. Preoperative assessment and intraoperative technologies are essential for successful implementation. Biomechanical validation is needed before clinical application.
Image quality and radiation dose in spinal surgery: a comparison of three imaging systems in phantom

Abstract:Purpose: Using optimal settings for x-ray scans is crucial for obtaining three-dimensional images of high quality while keeping the patient dose low. Our work compares dose and image quality (IQ) of three intraoperative imaging systems [O-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), ClarifEye C-arm CBCT, and Airo computed tomography] used for spinal surgery. Approach: Patients of 70, 90, and 110 kg were simulated with an anthropomorphic phantom by adding tissue-equivalent material. Titanium inserts were placed in the phantom spine for reproducing metal artifacts in the images. Organ dose was measured with thermo-luminescent dosimeters for effective dose (E) calculation. Subjective IQ was assessed by ranking the images acquired with the manufacturer-defined imaging protocols. Objective IQ was assessed with a customized Catphan phantom. Results: The ClarifEye protocols resulted in the lowest E ranging from 1.4 to 5.1 mSv according to phantom size and protocol. The highest E was measured for the high-definition protocol of O-arm (E 2.2 to 9 mSv) providing the best subjective IQ for imaging of the spine without titanium inserts. For the images with metal, the best IQ was obtained with ClarifEye. Airo (E 5.5 to 8.4 mSv) was ranked with the lowest IQ for images without metal while the rank improved for images with metal. Airo images had better uniformity, noise, and contrast sensitivity compared with CBCTs but worse high-contrast resolution. The values of these parameters were comparable between the CBCT systems. Conclusions: Both CBCT systems provided better IQ compared with Airo for navigation of lumbar spinal surgery for the original phantom. Metal artifacts particularly affect O-arm images decreasing the subjective IQ. The high spatial resolution of CBCT systems resulted in a relevant parameter for the visibility of anatomical features important for spine navigation. Low dose protocols were enough to obtain a clinically acceptable contrast-to-noise ratio in the bones.
Comparison of different imaging devices and navigation systems for cervical pedicle screw placement: an experimental study on screw accuracy, screw placement time and radiation dose

Abstract:Cervical pedicle screws (CPS) provide biomechanically superior fixation compared to other techniques but are technically more demanding. Navigated CPS placement has been increasingly reported as a safe and accurate technique, yet there are few studies comparing different combinations of imaging and navigation systems under comparable conditions. With this study, we aimed to compare different imaging and navigation systems for CPS placement in terms of accuracy, screw placement time and applied radiation dose. For this experimental study, navigated CPS placement was performed at levels C2 to C7 in 24 identical radiopaque artificial spine models by two surgeons with different levels of experience using three different combinations of intraoperative 3D imaging devices and navigation systems. Accuracy, time and radiation dose were compared between the groups. In total, 288 screws were placed. Accuracy was > 98% in all groups with no significant differences between groups or between surgeons ( P = 0.30 and P = 0.31, respectively), but the inexperienced surgeon required significantly more time ( P < 0.001). Radiation dose was significantly higher with iCT compared to CBCT ( P 98% were achieved for navigated CPS placement regardless of the imaging modality or navigation system used. Radiation doses were significantly lower for CBCT compared to iCT guidance.

Image Quality Comparison of Three 3D Mobile X-Ray Imaging Guidance Devices Used in Spine Surgery: A Phantom Study

Abstract:An image-quality CT phantom was scanned with three different 3D X-ray imaging guidance devices in the operating theatre: O-Arm, Loop-X, and Airo TruCT. Default acquisition and reconstruction parameters for lumbar spine procedures were used on each device. The tube current was set to a dose level of around 27 mGy. A task-based image quality assessment was performed by calculating the noise power spectrum (NPS) and task transfer function (TTF). A detectability index (d') was calculated for three simulated bone lesions. The noise magnitude of the O-Arm was higher than the Airo TruCT, and the Loop-X had higher noise than the Airo TruCT. The highest average NPS frequency was for the O-Arm images, and the lowest was for the Loop-X. The TTFs at 50% values were similar for the Airo TruCT and Loop-X devices. Compared to Airo TruCT, the TTF at 50% value increased with the O-Arm by 53.12% and 41.20% for the Teflon and Delrin inserts, respectively. Compared to Airo TruCT, the d' value was lower with Loop-X by −26.73%, −27.02%, and −23.95% for lytic lesions, sclerotic lesions, and high-density bone, respectively. Each 3D-imaging spine surgery guidance device has its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of image quality. Cone-beam CT systems apparently offer the best compromise between noise and spatial resolution for spine surgery.

Abstract:Abstract Background Pedicle screw placement in patients with osteoporosis is a serious clinical challenge. The bone mineral density (BMD) of the screw trajectory has been positively correlated with the screw pull-out force, while the computer tomography (CT) value has been linearly correlated with the BMD. The purpose of this study was to establish an in vitro osteoporosis model and verify the accuracy and effectiveness of automated pedicle screw planning software based on CT values in this model. Methods Ten vertebrae (L1-L5) of normal adult pigs were randomly divided into decalcification and control groups. In the decalcification group, the vertebral bodies were decalcified with Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to construct an in vitro osteoporosis model. In the decalcification group, automatic planning (AP) and conventional manual planning (MP) were used to plan the pedicle screw trajectory on the left and right sides of the pedicle, respectively, and MP was used on both sides of the control group. CT values of trajectories obtained by the two methods were measured and compared. Then, 3D-printed guide plates were designed to assist pedicle screw placement. Finally, the pull-out force of the trajectory obtained by the two methods was measured. Results After decalcification, the BMD of the vertebra decreased from − 0.03 ± 1.03 to − 3.03 ± 0.29 (P < 0.05). In the decalcification group, the MP trajectory CT value was 2167.28 ± 65.62 Hu, the AP trajectory CT value was 2723.96 ± 165.83 Hu, and the MP trajectory CT value in the control group was 2242.94 ± 25.80 Hu (P < 0.05). In the decalcified vertebrae, the screw pull-out force of the MP group was 48.6% lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The pull-out force of the AP trajectory was 44.7% higher than that of the MP trajectory (P < 0.05) and reached 97.4% of the MP trajectory in the control group (P > 0.05). Conclusion Automatic planning of the pedicle screw trajectory based on the CT value can obtain a higher screw pull-out force, which is a valuable new method of pedicle screw placement in osteoporotic vertebre.
First Experience with Combined Use of Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction and Gemstone Spectral Imaging in Spinal Fusion CT Images

Abstract:Objective. To explore whether the image noises and the metal artifacts could be further managed by the combined use of two technologies, the adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) and the monochromatic imaging generated by gemstone spectral imaging (GSI) dual-energy CT. Materials and Methods. Fifty-one patients with 318 spinal pedicle screws were prospectively scanned with dual energy CT by using fast kV-switching GSI between 80 and 140 kVp. The monochromatic GSI images at 110 keV were reconstructed either without ASIR or with ASIR of various levels (30%, 50%, 70% and 100%). For these five sets of images, both objective and subjective image quality assessments were performed to evaluate the image quality. Results. With objective image quality assessment, the metal artifacts (measured by an artifacts index) significantly decreased when increasing levels of ASIR was utilized (p < 0.001). Moreover, adding ASIR to GSI also decreased the image noise (p < 0.001) and improved the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR, p < 0.001). With subjective image quality analysis, the inter-reader agreements were good, with intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) of 0.89 to 0.99. Meanwhile, the visualization of the peri-implant soft tissue was improved at higher ASIR levels (p < 0.001). Conclusion. Combined use of ASIR and GSI is shown to decrease the image noise and improve the image quality in post-spinal fusion CT scans. Optimal results were achieved with ASIR levels of over 70%.

Abstract:Background: The accurate and safe positioning of cervical pedicle screws is crucial. While augmented reality (AR) use in spine surgery has previously demonstrated clinical utility in the thoracolumbar spine, its technical feasibility in the cervical spine remains less explored. Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the precision and safety of AR-assisted pedicle screw placement in the cervical spine. Study design: In this experimental study, five cadaveric cervical spine models were instrumented from C3 to C7 by five different spine surgeons. The navigation accuracy and clinical screw accuracy were evaluated. Methods: Post-procedural CT scans were evaluated for clinical accuracy by two independent neuroradiologists using the Gertzbein-Robbins scale. Technical precision was assessed by calculating the angular trajectory (°) and linear screw tip (mm) deviations in the axial and sagittal planes from the virtual pedicle screw position as recorded by the AR-guided platform during the procedure compared to the actual pedicle screw position derived from post-procedural imaging. Results: A total of forty-one pedicle screws were placed in five cervical cadavers, with each of the five surgeons navigating at least seven screws. Gertzbein-Robbins grade of A or B was achieved in 100% of cases. The mean values for tip and trajectory errors in the axial and sagittal planes between the virtual versus actual position of the screws was less than 3 mm and 30°, respectively (p<0.05). None of the cervical screws violated the cortex by more than 2 mm or displaced neurovascular structures. Conclusions: AR-assisted cervical pedicle screw placement in cadavers demonstrated clinical accuracy comparable to existing literature values for image-guided navigation methods for the cervical spine. Clinical significance: This study provides technical and clinical accuracy data that supports clinical trialing of AR-assisted subaxial cervical pedicle screw placement.
Metal Artifacts Reduction Using Monochromatic Images from Spectral CT: Evaluation of Pedicle Screws in Patients with Scoliosis.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate the effectiveness of spectral CT in reducing metal artifacts caused by pedicle screws in patients with scoliosis.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Institutional review committee approval and written informed consents from patients were obtained. 18 scoliotic patients with a total of 228 pedicle screws who underwent spectral CT imaging were included in this study. Monochromatic image sets with and without the additional metal artifacts reduction software (MARS) correction were generated with photon energy at 65keV and from 70 to 140keV with 10keV interval using the 80kVp and 140kVp projection sets. Polychromatic images corresponded to the conventional 140kVp imaging were also generated from the same scan data as a control group. Both objective evaluation (screw width and quantitative artifacts index measurements) and subjective evaluation (depiction of pedicle screws, surrounding structures and their relationship) were performed.RESULTS:Image quality of monochromatic images in the range from 110 to 140keV (0.97±0.28) was rated superior to the conventional polychromatic images (2.53±0.54) and also better than monochromatic images with lower energy. Images of energy above 100keV also give accurate measurement of the width of screws and relatively low artifacts index. The form of screws was slightly distorted in MARS reconstruction.CONCLUSIONS:Compared to conventional polychromatic images, monochromatic images acquired from dual-energy CT provided superior image quality with much reduced metal artifacts of pedicle screws in patients with scoliosis. Optimal energy range was found between 110 and 140keV.
