Abstract:Aromatic VOCs, like toluene, have recently attracted increasing attention for the treatment under the carbon peaking and neutrality policy. Catalytic oxidation, characterized by high efficiency and low production of secondary pollutants, has become the mainstream technology for toluene elimination. Thereinto, developing efficient and stable catalysts is essential. This work overviewed different types catalysts for oxidizing toluene, including multi-metal catalysts, high-entropy catalysts, core-shell catalysts, and post-treatment techniques for synthesized catalysts. Additionally, the catalytic reaction mechanisms and catalyst stability were elaborated. Based on the investigations, the ideas for designing novel catalysts in the future were tried to be proposed that the high-entropy catalysts and the integration of heterogeneous elements, morphology adjustment, and surface treatment should be appreciated. Meanwhile, operando or quasi-in situ technology combining with the simulation must be performed for deeply comprehending the oxidation reaction mechanisms. For the investigation of poisoning resistance, one more toxic substance should be considered, which needed to explore new anti-poisoning strategies and methods for essential resistance. All these aspects might promote developing catalyst and understanding catalysis in the field of catalytic oxidation for toluene.

Abstract:γ-MnO2, SmMnO3, and γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 catalysts were prepared by facile methods, wherein the SmMnO3 (SMO) perovskite was synthesized through one-step calcination and the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 was formed by an in situ growth of γ-MnO2 on the surface of SMO. These materials ware characterized by XRD, SEM-mapping, N2-adsorption, XPS and H2-TPR to investigate their textural properties. Compared with that of SMO and γ-MnO2, the γ-MnO2/SMO shows better performance for catalytic oxidation of aromatic VOCs in wet air (10 vol.%), which may be attributed to its higher surface molar ratio of lattice oxygen to adsorbed oxygen (Olatt/Oads) and better low-temperature reducibility. Besides, for γ-MnO2/SMO catalyst, a successive oxidation route and the inner principle of BETX (benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and o-xylene) oxidation were also revealed via various tests and a comprehension of dynamics investigation. Meanwhile, the experiments under simulated realistic exhaust conditions displayed that the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 is also a good catalyst with high stability for aromatic VOCs oxidation, and fulfilled endurability to high humidity (20 vol.%).

Abstract:The catalytic oxidation of VOCs over catalysts is a multi‐step reaction process and the reaction follows the Mars‐van Krevelen (MVK) mechanism. The reaction mechanism of toluene is: toluene→benzaldehyde→benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid→CO2+H2O. The oxidation route of ethyl acetate is: ethyl acetate→ethanol→acetic acid→CO2+H2O. In this paper, Fe−Mn oxide catalysts were prepared by the co‐precipitation method. (Fe2O3)‐(Mn3O4)‐3 : 1 showed the best catalytic activity in the degradation of toluene and ethyl acetate, with the removal rate reaching 90 % at 166 °C and 156 °C respectively. The XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS characterizations revealed that the interaction between Fe and Mn and the higher surface adsorption of oxygen in the (Fe2O3)‐(Mn3O4)‐3 : 1 catalyst may be the main factors promoting the catalytic oxidation. (Fe2O3)‐(Mn3O4)‐3 : 1 exhibited a better removal rate in ethyl acetate than toluene at different space velocities, concentrations and water contents. Under the same conditions, the degradation rate of (Fe2O3)‐(Mn3O4)‐3 : 1 in ethyl acetate was also greater than that in xylene and butyl acetate, which was related to their oxidation processes. FT‐IR and GC‐MS characterizations of fresh and used (Fe2O3)‐(Mn3O4)‐3 : 1 catalysts revealed intermediates in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds, and the reaction mechanisms were analyzed: Firstly, VOCs molecules were adsorbed on the catalyst surface, then decomposed into organic intermediates and oxidized to CO2 and H2O finally.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have serious hazard to human health and ecological environment. Due to its low cost and high activity, the catalytic oxidation technology considered to be the most effective method to remove VOCs. Toluene is one of the typical VOCs, hence its catalytic elimination is crucial for the regulation of VOCs. Manganese dioxide (MnO2) has been extensively studied for its excellent redox performance and low-temperature operation conditions. In this review, we summarize the research progresses in the toluene catalytic oxidation of MnO2-based catalysts, which contain single MnO2, metal-doped MnO2 and supported MnO2 catalyst. In particular, we pay much attention on the relationship between the chemical properties and toluene oxidation performance over MnO2 catalyst, as well as the catalytic reaction mechanisms. Moreover, the effects of different crystal forms and morphologies on the catalytic toluene reaction were discussed. And the perspective on MnO2 catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of toluene has been proposed. We expect that the summary of these important findings can serve as an important reference for the catalytic treatment of VOCs.
Heterointerface engineering regulating the energy-level configuration of α-MnO2/δ-MnO2 for enhancing toluene catalytic combustion performance

Abstract:This work offers a novel approach to prepare manganese oxides with heterointerface structure as a superior catalyst for the catalytic combustion of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The α-MnO2/δ-MnO2 with heterointerfaces were prepared via annealing δ-MnO2 precursors which were obtained from the redox precipitation between HCl and KMnO4. The characterization results indicate that the heterointerface structure of α-MnO2/δ-MnO2 optimizes energy level structure and provides abundant surface defects, showing superior low-temperature reducibility and preferable mobility of oxygen species. Such features significantly enhance the catalytic activity of the α-MnO2/δ-MnO2 with heterointerfaces catalysts for the complete oxidation of toluene (the toluene conversion rates of 10 % and 90 % are 191 °C and 213 °C, respectively). Moreover, the catalysts show high stability for 50 h. The presented catalysts disclose an avenue to address current obstacles in the catalytic oxidation of VOCs.

Abstract:Toluene, which is one of the typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can pose a serious threat to environment and human health. Catalytic oxidation technology is regarded as a highly efficient method for the removal of toluene. This article reviews the recent advances of the catalytic oxidation of toluene on Mn-based catalysts. The reaction mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of toluene has been summarized first. Then the structure and catalytic performance of different Mn-based catalysts have been systematically described and discussed. In particular, defect engineering to fabricate highly active Mn-based catalysts has been introduced. Finally, the current scientific issues and perspectives for the catalytic oxidation of toluene in future research are put forward. Hopefully, this comprehensive review can shed light on the design of more efficient Mn-based catalysts for toluene oxidation to promote their practical application.
Generation of Abundant Oxygen Vacancies in Fe Doped Δ-Mno2 by a Facile Interfacial Synthesis Strategy for Highly Efficient Catalysis of VOCs Oxidation

Abstract:A series of homogenous Fe-Mn oxides with superior catalytic oxidation activity was developed via interfacial redox-precipitation method for eliminating VOCs from industrial waste gas. Among them, Fe1Mn5 oxide achieved the optimum catalytic performance for toluene oxidation with a T90 of 209 degrees C. In addition, the catalyst demonstrated superior stability for long-time operation and great water resistance. By combining an array of analytical techniques with DFT calculations, the results revealed that Fe doping and interfacial redox-precipitation method synergistically resulted in high concentration of oxygen vacancy defect over Fe1Mn5 oxide, which improved lattice oxygen mobility and oxygen species activity, thus enhancing its low temperature reducibility. Meanwhile, in situ DRIFTS analysis revealed that both the adsorbed oxygen species and lattice oxygen with improved mobility could interact with adsorbed toluene, thus facilitating rapid dehydrogenation of methyl and demethylation of toluene and promoting the breakage of C--C bond in the aromatic ring.

Abstract:Hybrid catalysts are widely utilized in various environmental catalysis, such as catalytic oxidization and reduction. However, most works usually treat a hybrid catalyst as a whole, and seldom report explores interface behavior of active species between components in the hybrid. In this work, we investigated mechanism for enhanced catalytic oxidization of toluene by a mixture of Mn3O4 and CuMn2O4. The mixture removed 99% of toluene at 240 °C, far bigger than CuMn2O4 (53%) and Mn3O4 (23%). In brief, Mn3O4 had plenty of bulk lattice oxygens, which were inactive for toluene catalytic oxidization. After forming an interface between Mn3O4 and CuMn2O4, oxygen vacancy formed on the interface during the catalysis, and transferred the bulk lattice oxygen to the interface, forming active lattice oxygen. Therefore, the number of active sites was increased, resulting in an enhanced catalytic performance. This conclusion was verified in other hybrids, including Mn3O4/CuFeOx, Mn3O4/CuCeOx, and Mn3O4/CuCoOx. The main result of this work helps to understand the catalytic mechanism of volatile organic compounds by hybrid oxides. These results are also in favor of designing and optimizing catalysts.

Abstract:MnO2-decorated iron-manganese composite oxides were prepared via a novel method combining hydrolysis driving redox reaction and hydrothermal approach. The differences in physicochemical properties and microstructures were controlled by modulating the ratio of MnO2 to 5Mn1Fe (The molar ratio of Mn to Fe was 5:1). Characterization results displayed that the excellent efficiency of toluene removal over 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst was attributable to the special structure, strong low-temperature reducibility, high surface Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oads/Olatt molar ratios. The interaction between MnO2 and 5Mn1Fe played a predominant role in outstanding catalytic efficiency of the hetero-nanostructures. Among all as-prepared catalysts, the highest activity was achieved over the bayberry-like 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst with corresponding T90 of 233 °C, much lower than MnO2 for 313 °C and 5Mn1Fe for 280 °C. This successful strategy could not only be applied to VOCs catalytic oxidation but also provide a novel synthetic path for other catalysis systems.

Abstract:This paper discusses the modification of MnOx by doping various metals, such as Cu, supported on cordierite honeycomb ceramics, which were easily synthesized by using the impregnation method. The physicochemical properties were comprehensively featured via the BET, XRD, SEM-EDX and H2-TPR techniques. Activity results suggested that the introduction of doping metals significantly enhanced the catalytic performance of Cu1Mn2Ox compared to single metal oxides. Furthermore, in the catalytic oxidation of benzene and toluene, the monolithic Cu1Mn2Ox catalyst demonstrates the best catalytic performance. It was able to completely oxidize the two compounds at 275oC with a reaction velocity (WHSV) of about 18,000 mL/(g•hr) and pollutant concentrations of 7000 ppm and 12000 ppm, respectively. The formation of a Cu-Mn solid solution with spinel Cooper-Manganese structure was thought to be the cause of the excellent catalytic performance of monolithic Cu1Mn2Ox. This resulted in an increase in the amount of adsorbed oxygen species on the surface and a high lattice oxygen mobility. This can improve catalyst reducibility and oxygen species activity, as demonstrated by significantly higher dehydrogenation temperatures of Cu-Mn composite oxides through H2-TPR. Meanwhile, the monolithic Cu1Mn2Ox catalyst showed good stability in 16 hours of testing and cycle ability test and showed great potential in practical application.

Abstract:Catalytic combustion of toluene has been widely investigated due to importance of abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and in this work we have successfully prepared highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for toluene combustion by impregnation of manganese oxides with Al-rich Beta zeolites (Beta-SDS) with H-form (MnOx/H-Beta-SDS) and K-form (MnOx/K-Beta-SDS) as well as pure siliceous Beta zeolite (MnOx/Si-Beta). Catalytic tests show that these zeolite-supported catalysts have higher activities than alumina-supported manganese oxides (MnOx/Al2O3). By comprehensive consideration of reducibility, adsorbed oxygen species, and lattice oxygen species in the catalysts, it is shown that the adsorbed oxygen species play more important roles than others for the catalytic activity. The good catalytic performance and understanding of active sites over the MnOx/H-Beta-SDS might be helpful for preparation of catalysts in VOCs abatement.
An investigation of the activity and mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of toluene by FeMnO x catalyst

Abstract:To examine the influence of Fe-Mn interactions on the catalytic removal to toluene, FeO x , MnO x and FeMnO x catalysts were manufactured via co-precipitation approach. FeMnO x catalysts presented the optimal low-temperature catalytic toluene activity which attained 100 % removal of toluene (T 100 ) at 270 °C. The physical and chemical characterization of the material confirmed an increased ratio of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ and O ads /O lat bonds caused by to the formation of Fe 3+ -O-Mn 3+ bonds. Concurrently, the low-temperature catalytic activity for toluene increased with the increased density of oxygen vacancies, the changed properties in oxygen vacancies and the enhanced oxidation capacity of surface activated oxygen species. In situ DRIFTS experiments were performed to infer different toluene degradation pathways on three catalysts. The catalytic routes for toluene over FeMnO x catalyst was different at 150 °C and 260 °C. At 150 °C, as the surface oxygen vacancies were not fully activated, the reaction pathway was toluene → benzyl alcohol → benzaldehyde → phenol. The path of toluene over FeMnO x catalyst at 260 °C was toluene → benzyl alcohol → benzoaldehyde → benzoate → maleic anhydride and carbonate → H 2 O and CO 2 . As compared with MnO x and FeO x catalysts, FeMnO x catalyst could oxidize benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and phenol at 150 °C. This decreased the energy required to open the ring of benzene and accelerated the catalytic oxidation rate.

Abstract:This research is dedicated to solving the environmental problems of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly aromatic chemicals in industrial emissions. The research aims to explore low-temperature, effective catalytic degradation technologies, specifically involving metal oxide and noble metal oxide catalysts, especially the Cr-Mn-Pt series catalysts. The Cr-Mn-Pt catalysts synthesized by the co-precipitation method showed efficient catalytic degradation of VOCs in low-temperature environments. The results of the experiment show that the Cr-Mn-Pt catalysts achieved 90% toluene conversion at 198°C, a 1000 ppm toluene concentration, and GHSV=15,000 mL/g·h, which is superior to single MnO x and Cr-Mn catalysts. The catalysts are characterized in depth using X-ray diffraction, specific surface area analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The result shows that the high specific surface area and large volume of pores of the Cr-Mn-Pt catalyst are advantageous for enhancing their catalytic activity and stability. The catalytic mechanism analysis shows that the degradation mechanism of toluene follows the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism with the final conversion of the intermediate product benzoate to CO 2 and H 2 O. In summary, the Cr-Mn-Pt catalyst shows great potential in the technical treatment of VOCs due to their excellent low-temperature catalytic efficiency and stability, and it has enormous practical implications for protecting the environment in the industry.

Abstract:Developing facile preparation method to obtain the satisfied low-temperature catalytic performance of transitional metal oxide-based materials is still a challenge in deep degradation of VOCs. Here, a series of Mn-Cu bimetallic oxide catalysts were prepared by one-step hydrothermal-redox method for catalytic total oxidation of toluene. The CH3COOH concentration, Cu/Mn molar ratio and calcination temperature greatly affected the crystal structure, micromorphology and catalytic performance. Amongst, MnCu spinel structured catalyst exhibited excellent low-temperature catalytic activity, superior durability and water resistance in toluene total oxidation owing to its abundant surface adsorbed oxygen species, higher amount of Cu+ and Mn3+ and excellent low-temperature reducibility. The reaction rate of MnCu was 7.0 times higher than that of MnCu0.5 at 210 °C. The cyclic redox process with enough oxygen vacancy played a vital role in toluene oxidation. The deep oxidation of benzene was the key step in the toluene oxidation. Proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) results revealed the reaction intermediates including benzaldehyde, benzene and phenol, which further decomposed to acetone, ethanol, acetic acid, ketone and acetaldehyde by ring opening before total mineralization. Therefore, PTR-MS provided a facile method to investigate the reaction mechanism of toluene oxidation.

Redox-Induced In Situ Growth of MnO2 with Rich Oxygen Vacancies over Monolithic Copper Foam for Boosting Toluene Combustion

Abstract:Catalytic combustion has been known to be an effective technique in volatile organic compound (VOC) abatement. Developing monolithic catalysts with high activity at low temperatures is vital yet challenging in industrial applications. Herein, monolithic MnO2-Ov/CF catalysts were fabricated via the in situ growth of K2CuFe(CN)6 (CuFePBA, a family of metal-organic frames) over copper foam (CF) followed by a redox-etching route. The as-synthesized monolith MnO2-Ov-0.04/CF catalyst displays a superior low-temperature activity (T90% = 215 °C) and robust durability for toluene elimination even in the presence of 5 vol % water. Experimental results reveal that the CuFePBA template not only guides the in situ growth of δ-MnO2 with high loading over CF but also acts as a source of dopant to create more oxygen vacancies and weaken the strength of the Mn-O bond, which considerably improves the oxygen activation ability of δ-MnO2 and consequently boosts the low-temperature catalytic activity of the monolith MnO2-Ov-0.04/CF toward toluene oxidation. In addition, the reaction intermediate and proposed mechanism in the MnO2-Ov-0.04/CF mediated catalytic oxidation process were investigated. This study provides new insights into the development of highly active monolithic catalysts for the low-temperature oxidation of VOCs.

Abstract:The crucial point of the industrial application of VOCs catalytic oxidation is to develop efficient and stable monolithic catalysts. Traditional monolithic catalysts were prepared by coating and impregnating the ceramic carrier, which led to uneven distribution of active components, low utilization rate, and even deactivation, thereby reducing the performance of monolithic catalysts. In this study, a MnO 2 monolithic catalyst（MnO 2 /NF-IS） was prepared in situ by the redox reaction between nickel foam and KMnO 4 . The catalytic performance of the as-obtained catalysts for toluene oxidation was investigated. Besides, the catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, and XPS, and the degradation pathway of toluene oxidation was investigated. It has been shown that MnO 2 /NF-IS had a special structure of porous nanosheet arrays and abundant oxygen vacancies, delivering the best performance for toluene oxidation(T 90 =248 ℃), which was better than that of powder MnO 2 (T 90 =271 ℃) as well as the integrated MnO 2 /NF-WC(T 90 =293 ℃) prepared by the coating method. Therefore, a new strategy for the synthesis of MnO 2 monolithic catalysts was provided in this study.

Abstract:Developing efficient photothermal catalysts with full spectrum response is one of the frontier topics in photothermal catalytic of VOCs. In this work, La1-x Fe x MnO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) was synthesized via citrate sol-gel method. Under full spectrum illumination of 1.3 × 104 W/m2, La0.9Fe0.1MnO3 exhibited a more superior activity (86.7% toluene conversion and 84.6% CO2 yield). Through controlled experiments, not only the origin of photothermal activity, but the possible intrinsic drivers (Fe doping and photoactivation) of the enhanced activity were also revealed. Particularly, the mechanistic details of their facilitating reactions were thoroughly studied, where the improved mobility and activation of lattice oxygen played the primary role. Moreover, the co-effect of Fe doping and photoactivation on the resistance to complex gas components (SO2, H2O) and durability was systematically investigated. Eventually, the plausible pathways and mechanisms of toluene oxidation were proposed. This study provides a new insight into photothermal catalysts with full spectrum response for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Cost-efficient and durable manganese-based catalysts are in great demand for the catalytic elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are dominated not only by the nanostructures but also by the oxygen vacancies and Mn-O bond in the catalysts. Herein, a series of nanostructured Co-Fe-doped-δ-MnO2 catalysts (Co-Fe-δ-MnO2) with high dispersion were in situ fabricated by employing metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) as reducing agents, dopants, and templates all at the same time. The as-obtained Co-Fe-δ-MnO2-20% catalyst exhibited robust durability and high catalytic activity (225 °C) for toluene combustion even in the presence of 5 vol % water vapor, which is 50 °C lower than that of pristine δ-MnO2. Various characterizations revealed that the homogeneously dispersed codoping of Co and Fe ions into δ-MnO2 promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies and weakens the strength of the Mn-O bond, thus increasing the amount of adsorbed oxygen (Oads) and improving the mobility of lattice oxygen (Olatt). Meanwhile, due to successfully inheriting the framework structures of MOFs, the obtained catalyst exhibited a high surface area and three-dimensional mesoporous structure, which contributes to diffusion and increases the number of active sites. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS results confirmed that the toluene degradation mechanism on the Co-Fe-δ-MnO2-20% follows the MVK mechanism and revealed that more Oads and high-mobility Olatt induced by this novel method contribute to accumulating and mineralizing key intermediates (benzoate) and thus promote toluene oxidation. In conclusion, this work stimulates the opportunities to develop Co-Fe-δ-MnO2 as a class of nonprecious-metal-based catalysts for controlling VOC emissions.
