Abstract:Aromatic VOCs, like toluene, have recently attracted increasing attention for the treatment under the carbon peaking and neutrality policy. Catalytic oxidation, characterized by high efficiency and low production of secondary pollutants, has become the mainstream technology for toluene elimination. Thereinto, developing efficient and stable catalysts is essential. This work overviewed different types catalysts for oxidizing toluene, including multi-metal catalysts, high-entropy catalysts, core-shell catalysts, and post-treatment techniques for synthesized catalysts. Additionally, the catalytic reaction mechanisms and catalyst stability were elaborated. Based on the investigations, the ideas for designing novel catalysts in the future were tried to be proposed that the high-entropy catalysts and the integration of heterogeneous elements, morphology adjustment, and surface treatment should be appreciated. Meanwhile, operando or quasi-in situ technology combining with the simulation must be performed for deeply comprehending the oxidation reaction mechanisms. For the investigation of poisoning resistance, one more toxic substance should be considered, which needed to explore new anti-poisoning strategies and methods for essential resistance. All these aspects might promote developing catalyst and understanding catalysis in the field of catalytic oxidation for toluene.

Abstract:Toluene, which is one of the typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can pose a serious threat to environment and human health. Catalytic oxidation technology is regarded as a highly efficient method for the removal of toluene. This article reviews the recent advances of the catalytic oxidation of toluene on Mn-based catalysts. The reaction mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of toluene has been summarized first. Then the structure and catalytic performance of different Mn-based catalysts have been systematically described and discussed. In particular, defect engineering to fabricate highly active Mn-based catalysts has been introduced. Finally, the current scientific issues and perspectives for the catalytic oxidation of toluene in future research are put forward. Hopefully, this comprehensive review can shed light on the design of more efficient Mn-based catalysts for toluene oxidation to promote their practical application.

One-pot synthesis of dual-phase manganese dioxide for toluene removal: Effect of crystal phase blending level on oxygen species and activity

Abstract:A series of highly active manganese oxide with different oxygen species were synthesized by one pot method, wherein the active species were induced by in-situ combination of crystal phase. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed the successful combination of rodlike MnO2 and flowerlike MnO2. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated an increase in the oxygen defects due to the in-situ assembly. Compared with that of pure α-MnO2 and β-MnO2, the combined-phase xα/yβ-MnO2 ((x, y represents the molar ratio of α and δ) presented the higher activities for the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Through the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (H2-TPR) technologies, the order of catalytic activity was completely consistent with the change trend of the hydrogen consumption and the molar ratio of adsorbed oxygen/lattice oxygen (Oads/Olatt), showing that the high catalytic activities of catalysts were main attributed to their more low-valent manganese and high content of adsorbed oxygen. Moreover, the intermediates of toloune oxidation over α/β-MnO2 with the best catalytic activity were detected by in-situ diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and the by-products in the exhaust gases were detected by a thermal desorption/gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (TD/GC–MS), which confirmed the presence of the intermediates. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanism and degradation path of toluene oxidation have been studied in depth. Finally, the effect of moisture on catalytic activity of α/δ-MnO2 for toluene oxidation were also discussed.

Abstract:With the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization, the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has become a serious problem, so it is urgent to develop efficient methods to eliminate. Due to the high catalytic activity, strong stability and low cost, manganese-based catalysts as a kind of non-noble catalysts have been widely used in VOCs treatment, especially in abatement of VOCs by catalytic oxidation. The manganese-based catalysts with excellent properties have been widely used in VOCs removal, and a series of measures have been adopted to improve the oxidation activity of manganese-based catalysts. In this review, the effect of structure and composition of manganese-based catalysts (such as simple MnOx, mixed manganese-based metal oxides and supported manganese-based oxide catalysts) on catalytic oxidation of VOCs and the corresponding catalytic oxidation mechanism over different manganese-based catalysts are analyzed. The specific surface area (SSA), oxygen vacancies (OVs), reactive oxygen species, the valence of Mn and acid sites of manganese-based catalysts play an important role in VOCs oxidation. Finally, some challenges and suggestions are summarized and put forward for future research. This critical review is of great significance for systematic understanding and analysis of the VOCs oxidation over manganese-based catalysts, offering guidance to the preparation of highly efficient and cost-effective manganese-based catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Abstract:Manganese-based (Mn-based) oxide have been attracted much attention by researchers whose aim on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) controlling. Although the low cost, environment friendly and easy fabrication, the inferior catalytic activity of Mn-based oxide makes them unsuitable for practical application yet. In addition, the easy deactivation of Mn-based oxide catalysts to various conditions has been awarded in recent years. Summarizing the advancements of Mn-based oxide and different mechanisms of their deactivation are crucial for designing catalysts with superior catalytic active and stability for VOCs combustion. In this review, we summarize the developments of Mn-based oxide with elevated activity for catalytic oxidation of VOCs via morphology designing and vacancy engineering. Moreover, deactivation mechanisms with the presence of chloride-VOC, water vapor, NOx and SO2 are reviewed. Existing challenges and opportunities are proposed for future research toward to the industrial application of Mn-based oxide for VOCs combustion.

Abstract:In this study, a series of Mn/ZSM-5 catalysts with different Mn contents (2, 4, and 6 wt%) were prepared as adsorbents and catalysts. The adsorption of toluene and the regeneration performance of ozone catalytic oxidation at room temperature were investigated. The results showed that the toluene conversion reaches 90 % at 30 celcius through 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 catalytic oxidation. The cycling and ozone utilization rate experiments re-flected that after four consecutive adsorption-ozonation cycles, 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 still maintained good toluene adsorption capacity. In the regeneration process, the molar ratio of ozone consumption to toluene degradation was about 7.7:1, which was approximate to the theoretical molar ratio (6:1). The product distribution on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 during toluene degradation was determined by GC-MS analysis, and possible mechanism for catalytic oxidation of toluene on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 were proposed.

Abstract:Amorphous transition metal oxides exhibit considerable potential in the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) owing to their distinctive surface properties. In this study, we achieved the modulation of the crystalline structure of manganese oxides by employing various C 3 alcohols (alcohols with three carbons) with distinct hydroxyl types during the reduction process with potassium permanganate. Subsequently, a series of characterization techniques were employed to assess the catalytic performance of the prepared MnO 2 in the oxidation of toluene. Notably, the MnO 2 -G obtained from glycerol presented excellent catalytic activity (T 90 = 219 °C), stability, and water resistance. The unique amorphous/microcrystalline state of MnO 2 -G exposed more phase boundaries, and the unsaturated coordination structure facilitated the generation of additional defective sites, favoring the adsorption and activation of oxygen. Furthermore, the mixed-crystalline state induced the elevated Mn 3+ content on the surface of MnO 2 -G, leading to elongation of the Mn-O bond due to the pronounced Jahn-Teller effect of Mn 3+ . Consequently, the synergistic effects of the mixed crystalline state contributed to the efficient catalytic oxidation of toluene at relatively low temperatures. Additionally, the conversion pathway of toluene on MnO 2 -G was further revealed by in situ DRIFTS.

Abstract:Toluene is the most common volatile organic compound (VOC), and the MnO2-based catalyst is one of the excellent nonprecious metal catalysts for toluene oxidation. In this study, the effects of MnO2 precursors and the support types on the oxidation performance of toluene were systematically explored. The results showed that the 15MnO2/MS-CeO2-N catalyst with Mn(NO3)2·4H2O as the precursor and the mesoporous CeO2 nanosphere (MS-CeO2) as the support exhibited the most excellent performance. To reveal the reason behind this phenomenon, the calcination process of the catalyst precursor and the reaction process of toluene oxidation were investigated by in situ DRIFTS. It was found that the MnO2 precursor and the type of catalyst support could have a large effect on the reaction pathway and the produced intermediates. Therefore, the roles of the MnO2 precursor and the type of support should be key considerations when developing the high-performance MnO2-based toluene oxidation catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic ozonation is an efficient method for VOCs abatement at low temperatures, in which the rational design of highly active heterogeneous catalysts constitutes the most significant step. In this study, Al2O3 was first optimized by loading MnOx. And then K was used for modifying MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst, which exhibited 2.4 x 10(-3) mol.g(-1).s(-1) oxidation rate for dichloromethane and toluene oxidation with ca. 0.89 ppm ozone detected at 80 degrees C. That could be directly applied for removing toluene and dichloromethane mixture or coupled with other treatment technologies (such as biological purification). Besides, appropriate K doping could increase the amount of reactive surface oxygen species and the ratio of Mn2+, hence contributing to an enhanced oxidation ability. By contrast, an excess K doping inevitably lowered the activity of active surface oxygen species and interfered with the transformation of Mn3+ to Mn2+, which resulted in a weakened oxidative ability and thus a decreased cat-alytic activity. Finally, the reaction mechanisms over 0.1 K-MnOx/Al2O3 were tried to be demonstrated that the degradation of toluene mainly followed the pathway of toluene - phenylcarbinol - benzaldehyde - benzoic acid - phenyl group - small-molecule species and/or CO2 while the route of dichloromethane - methanol - formal-dehyde - formic acid - small-molecule species and/or CO2 explained the catalytic oxidation of dichloromethane. All of these findings may facilitate the design of novel heterogeneous catalysts for VOCs oxidation and progress the development of catalytic ozonation for toluene and dichloromethane abatement.

Abstract:Herein, the effect of influence factors (O3 concentration, temperature, and humidity) was explored in catalytic ozonation of toluene by using CuMn2O4 , which possessed a great steady-state activity at the optimal conditions. Under various conditions, a strong correlation was observed between O3 consumption, toluene oxidation, and COx formation. The technology of DRIFTS and GC-MS were used to study the effects of influencing factors on the toluene degradation process. Except for the intermediate content, no significant difference could be found in the types of byproducts, indicating the discrepancy of intermediate oxidation rate at different conditions. On the other hand, the situation about the effect of influence factors was investigated by SEM, BET, XPS, and TG. It is revealed that reactive oxygen species is the key to catalytic ozonation and participates in catalytic oxidation as an electron transfer intermediate. The speed of electron transfer is one of the main reasons for the impact of different influencing factors on performance.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are regarded as the major contributors to air pollution, and should be strictly regulated. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) is of great interest for the removal of VOCs owing to its strong oxidation capability. However, its application is greatly limited by catalytic deactivation. Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation provides a novel way to improve the photocatalytic activity while much O3 will be generated which may cause secondary pollution. In this study, a multi-functional catalyst of Mn/TiO2/activated carbon (AC) was developed to eliminate and utilize O3, as well as enhance catalytic oxidation of VOC degradation via ozone-assisted catalytic oxidation (OZCO). The results indicate that Mn modified TiO2/AC (i.e. 0.1%Mn/20%TiO2/AC) achieved a toluene removal efficiency of nearly 86% with 100% elimination rate of O3. With the help of Mn/TiO2/AC catalyst, O3 was catalytically decomposed and transformed into active species of O (1D) and OH, thus enhancing toluene removal. The combination of VUV irradiation with multi-functional catalyst provides a novel and efficient way for the degradation of VOCs.

Herein, we present a strategy to remove the internal water and hydrated cations from δ-MnO 2 , thereby unblocking the inter-lamellar gaps and exposing the internal Lewis-acid sites, while maintaining other physical and chemical characteristics of the sample unchanged. Notably, the well-defined δ-MnO 2 catalysts with more accessible interlayer Lewis-acid sites exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic activity in toluene oxidation, demonstrated in both two-stage plasma catalysis and single-stage ozonation processes. A quantitative analysis of Lewis-acid sites and initial toluene reaction rates revealed that these Lewis-acid sites serve as the active centers for toluene adsorption and activation, and the heterogeneous reaction between toluene and ozone follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. Moreover, in-depth analysis of byproducts showed that δ-MnO 2 rich in Lewis-acid sites promoted the oxidation of intermediates, such as esters, hydrazides, and ketones, leading to a more complete toluene oxidation. This work not only fully explores the potential of δ-MnO 2 as a catalyst, but also provides valuable insights into the elucidation of unknown catalytic active sites, potentially paving the way for the rational design of more efficient catalysts for VOC oxidation.

Abstract:The crucial point of the industrial application of VOCs catalytic oxidation is to develop efficient and stable monolithic catalysts. Traditional monolithic catalysts were prepared by coating and impregnating the ceramic carrier, which led to uneven distribution of active components, low utilization rate, and even deactivation, thereby reducing the performance of monolithic catalysts. In this study, a MnO 2 monolithic catalyst（MnO 2 /NF-IS） was prepared in situ by the redox reaction between nickel foam and KMnO 4 . The catalytic performance of the as-obtained catalysts for toluene oxidation was investigated. Besides, the catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, and XPS, and the degradation pathway of toluene oxidation was investigated. It has been shown that MnO 2 /NF-IS had a special structure of porous nanosheet arrays and abundant oxygen vacancies, delivering the best performance for toluene oxidation(T 90 =248 ℃), which was better than that of powder MnO 2 (T 90 =271 ℃) as well as the integrated MnO 2 /NF-WC(T 90 =293 ℃) prepared by the coating method. Therefore, a new strategy for the synthesis of MnO 2 monolithic catalysts was provided in this study.

Regulating oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups of α-MnO2 nanorods for enhancing post-plasma catalytic removal of toluene

Abstract:Although nonthermal plasma (NTP) technology has high removal efficiency for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), it has limited carbon dioxide (CO2) selectivity, which hinders its practical application. In this study, α-MnO2 nanorods with tunable oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups were synthesized by two-step hydrothermal process to enhance their activity for deep oxidation of toluene. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) was used to assist in synthesis of α-MnO2 nanorods with tunable oxygen vacancies, furtherly, more hydroxyl groups were introduced to HCl-assisted synthesized α-MnO2 by K+ supplement. The results showed that the as-synthesized nanorods exhibited superior activity, improved by nearly 30% removal efficiency of toluene compared to pristine MnO2 at SIE = 339 J/L, and reaching high COx selectivity of 72% at SIE = 483 J/L, successfully promoting the deep oxidation of toluene. It was affirmed that oxygen vacancies played an important role in toluene conversion, improving the conversion of ozone (O3) and resulting in higher mobility of surface lattice oxygen species. Besides, the enhancement of deep oxidation performance was caused by the increase of hydroxyl groups concentration. In-situ DRIFTS experiments revealed that the adsorbed toluene on catalyst surface was oxidized to benzyl alcohol by surface lattice oxygen, and hydroxyl groups were also found participating in toluene adsorption. Overall, this study provides a new approach to designing catalysts for deep oxidation of VOCs.

The Cr-Mn-Pt catalysts synthesized by the co-precipitation method showed efficient catalytic degradation of VOCs in low-temperature environments. The results of the experiment show that the Cr-Mn-Pt catalysts achieved 90% toluene conversion at 198°C, a 1000 ppm toluene concentration, and GHSV=15,000 mL/g·h, which is superior to single MnO x and Cr-Mn catalysts. The catalysts are characterized in depth using X-ray diffraction, specific surface area analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The result shows that the high specific surface area and large volume of pores of the Cr-Mn-Pt catalyst are advantageous for enhancing their catalytic activity and stability. The catalytic mechanism analysis shows that the degradation mechanism of toluene follows the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism with the final conversion of the intermediate product benzoate to CO 2 and H 2 O. In summary, the Cr-Mn-Pt catalyst shows great potential in the technical treatment of VOCs due to their excellent low-temperature catalytic efficiency and stability, and it has enormous practical implications for protecting the environment in the industry.

Abstract:MnO2-decorated iron-manganese composite oxides were prepared via a novel method combining hydrolysis driving redox reaction and hydrothermal approach. The differences in physicochemical properties and microstructures were controlled by modulating the ratio of MnO2 to 5Mn1Fe (The molar ratio of Mn to Fe was 5:1). Characterization results displayed that the excellent efficiency of toluene removal over 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst was attributable to the special structure, strong low-temperature reducibility, high surface Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oads/Olatt molar ratios. The interaction between MnO2 and 5Mn1Fe played a predominant role in outstanding catalytic efficiency of the hetero-nanostructures. Among all as-prepared catalysts, the highest activity was achieved over the bayberry-like 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst with corresponding T90 of 233 °C, much lower than MnO2 for 313 °C and 5Mn1Fe for 280 °C. This successful strategy could not only be applied to VOCs catalytic oxidation but also provide a novel synthetic path for other catalysis systems.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), one type of pollutant which not only causes a series of environmental issues but does extreme harm to human health, have attracted extensive attention. Therefore, it is urgent to treat VOCs to reduce their emissions and control terminal treatment. Catalytic oxidation is considered as a promising technology for VOCs removal due to its low energy consumption, high safety coefficient, and no secondary pollutants. This review discusses the oxidation mechanism of representative VOCs primarily. It further summarizes advances for VOCs removal catalysts, mainly supported noble metal catalysts (SNMCs) and transition metal oxides (TMOs) with economical and effective catalytic oxidation in recent years. It highlights the influence of reaction conditions and a series of factors on catalytic performance for VOCs. It also addresses how water vapor, SO2, and CO2 affect the deactivation of catalysts and proposes corresponding regeneration approaches. It gives the future directions for developing effective and stable catalysts for VOCs oxidation at lower temperatures. This review will provide an informative reference for designing excellent catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Abstract:Developing facile preparation method to obtain the satisfied low-temperature catalytic performance of transitional metal oxide-based materials is still a challenge in deep degradation of VOCs. Here, a series of Mn-Cu bimetallic oxide catalysts were prepared by one-step hydrothermal-redox method for catalytic total oxidation of toluene. The CH3COOH concentration, Cu/Mn molar ratio and calcination temperature greatly affected the crystal structure, micromorphology and catalytic performance. Amongst, MnCu spinel structured catalyst exhibited excellent low-temperature catalytic activity, superior durability and water resistance in toluene total oxidation owing to its abundant surface adsorbed oxygen species, higher amount of Cu+ and Mn3+ and excellent low-temperature reducibility. The reaction rate of MnCu was 7.0 times higher than that of MnCu0.5 at 210 °C. The cyclic redox process with enough oxygen vacancy played a vital role in toluene oxidation. The deep oxidation of benzene was the key step in the toluene oxidation. Proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) results revealed the reaction intermediates including benzaldehyde, benzene and phenol, which further decomposed to acetone, ethanol, acetic acid, ketone and acetaldehyde by ring opening before total mineralization. Therefore, PTR-MS provided a facile method to investigate the reaction mechanism of toluene oxidation.
