The authors develop the argument that present levels of immigration, particularly illegal immigration, are detrimental to U.S. interests, and that current global population trends will make this situation progressively worse. Stricter controls on immigration are considered.

Functionalized polymer single nanowires, drawn from solvated polymers, are evanescently coupled to nanoscale fiber tapers for optical launching and signal collection. Based on pronounced changes in waveguiding behavior of the nanowire when exposed to specimens, polymer single-nanowire optical sensors for humidity detection is demonstrated with high sensitivity and fast response.

Abstract:By using a simple and low-cost nanoimprinting technique, polymer micro/nanofiber Bragg gratings (MNFBGs) are fabricated with a ~551-nm grating period and a grating depth >;10 dB around 1.5-μm wavelength. As-fabricated MNFBGs also show high compactness to optical fiber systems and large dynamic range. Using a 2.5-μm-wide and 1.4-μm-thick MNFBG, we demonstrate strain sensing with a high sensitivity of -2.5 pm/με.

Abstract:The dual resonant peaks of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) have been prepared by depositing the polyelectrolyte multilayer films composed of salt-containing poly(diallyldimethyl- ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and salt-containing poly(sodium-p- styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The multilayered polyelectrolyte films of PDDA/PSS were alternately assembled on the surface of the LPFG via electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly approach. The sensing performance of the dual resonant peaks of the LPFG to nanofilms has been further evaluated. The experimental results demonstrated that the optimal sensitivities of the left resonant peak and the right resonant peak in the dual resonant peaks were as high as 52.79 nm/bilayer and 56.09 nm/bilayer, respectively, which were approximately 128 times and 136 times that of another single resonant peak in sequence. Finally, the reason for the emergence of the dual resonant peaks and the corresponding response mechanism to nanofilms were further analyzed and discussed theoretically. These findings are very beneficial for exploring the application of LPFGs in many fields such as biochemical sensing, drug screening, food detection and so on.

Abstract:By using a self-assembly method, SU-8 whispering gallery mode optical microcavities with an ultra-smooth surface (σ < 0.6 nm) and high-Q factors (∼104) are fabricated. As an application of the microcavities, we demonstrate a polydimethylsiloxane packaged temperature sensor with high sensitivity (120 pm per °C) and long-term stability (over one year). These results illustrate broad application potential in ultrasensitive sensors and microlasers.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based chemical sensor using hydrogel, a swellable polymer, as sensitive element is demonstrated. The sensing mechanism relies on the shift of Bragg wavelength due to the stress resulted from volume change of sensitive swellable hydrogel responding to the change of external environment. A polyacrylamide hydrogel fiber grating chemical sensor is made, and the experiments on its sensitivity to the salinity are performed. The sensitivity is low due to the less stress from the shrinking or swelling of hydrogels. Reducing the cross diameter of the grating through etching with hydrofluoric acid can greatly improve the sensitivity of the sensor.

Abstract:An ultracompact fiber acoustic sensor tip was fabricated by using two-photon polymerization technique. The fiber sensor tip was consisted of two sidewalls on the end surface of the single mode fiber and a film held up by the sidewalls, which forms fiber inline Fabry-Perot micro-cavity. Owing to the fabrication advantages of two-photon polymerization technique, the quadrature phase bias point can be controlled at fix wavelength of 1550 nm by matching the cavity length with the film thickness accurately. At laser wavelength of 1550 nm, the acoustic pressure of the fiber sensor tip reaches 0.0508 +/- 0.0052 nm/Pa. The fiber acoustic sensor tip can be suitable for both industrial and biomedical applications due to its high sensitivity, excellent biocompatibility, ultracompact size and independent of laser wavelength tuning. Abstract:Accurate probing, monitoring, and controlling the pH level is critical in different fields. In the last two decades, optical fiber/waveguide-based pH sensors have been widely investigated with the aim of further enhancement of sensitivity and miniaturization. Here, we propose a novel and cost-effective pH sensor based on polymer waveguide Bragg grating, addressing main aspects like sensitivity enhancement, miniaturization, narrow band response, and stable performance. The large evanescent field due to metal under cladding and high index coating combined with excellent penetration depth match with pH-sensitive polymer coating of poly-acrylic acid/poly-allylamine hydrochloride (PAA/PAH) in an aqueous medium, ensures a sensitivity of 10.4 nm/pH for a pH range of 4 to 7, two orders higher than all reported Bragg grating pH sensors to our knowledge. A narrow band (∼1 nm) response has been ensured by low propagation loss of the TE mode. Further, the variations in sensitivity and peak reflectivity are within 3% for a ±10% inaccuracy in various structural parameters, reflecting excellent fabrication tolerances. The proposed sensor is an important development, especially for the perishable food industry in which a high sensitivity in a pH range of 4 to 7 is highly desirable to accurately determine the freshness of foods.

Abstract:Herein, a novel material functionalization of fiber components is proposed, which is based on optically induced film forming. The film formation of polymer around a microfiber is achieved only by injecting an ultraviolet laser through the microfiber. The evanescent field of an ultraviolet laser, propagating along the microfiber surface, provides activation energy for photopolymerization of polymer and film formation directly onto the surface of a microfiber. The thickness of the deposited film can be controlled by adjusting the irradiation time. Additionally, the potential application case demonstrates that fiber components can be endowed with a given function by this material functionalization method. Therefore, a fiber relative humidity sensor using a polymer film-functionalized microfiber Bragg grating fabricated by this functionalization technique is demonstrated. This proposed sensor has the advantages of relatively fast response, large measurement range, and high stability.
Long-period Grating Inscription on Polymer Functionalized Optical Microfibers and Its Applications in Optical Sensing

Abstract:We demonstrated long-period grating（LPG） inscription on polymer functionalized optical microfibers and its applications in optical sensing. Optical microfibers were functionalized with ultraviolet-sensitive polymethyl methacrylate jackets and, thus, LPGs could be inscribed on optical microfibers via point-by-point ultraviolet laser exposure. For a 2 mm long microfiber LPG（MLPG） inscribed on optical microfibers with a diameter of 5.4 μm, a resonant dip of 15 d B at 1377 nm was observed. This MLPG showed a high sensitivity of strain and axial force, i.e.,-1.93 pm∕με and-1.15 pm∕μN, respectively. Although the intrinsic temperature sensitivity of the LPGs is relatively low, i.e.,-12.75 pm∕°C, it can be increased to be-385.11 pm∕°C by appropriate sealing. Benefiting from the small footprint and high sensitivity, MLPGs could have potential applications in optical sensing of strain,axial force, and temperature.

Abstract:Optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microbottle resonators based on a variety of polymer materials (benzocyclobutene (BCB), UV88 (Relentless, China) and Loctite3525 (HenKel, Germany)) were fabricated and investigated experimentally. The polymer materials were spin-coated onto the fiber and cured by ultraviolet (UV) light followed by heating to form a microbottle structure of different shapes and diameters. The WGMs were excited by tapered fiber, and the spectral characteristics of all realized microbottle cavities were evaluated, such as quality factor (Q > 104), free spectral range and polarization mode (TE and TM). The temperature and refractive index (RI) sensing performance are analyzed and Q-factor changes during the sensing process. In addition, a newly application of UV light intensity sensing for the polymer microbottle resonators was also demonstrated firstly. According to the experimental results that the microbottle resonator of BCB displays good UV light intensity sensitivity (0.0011 nm/(mw/cm2)) and figure of merit (FOM) (0.0122/(mw/cm2)). This sensor is a simple structure, low-cost material, robust performance, and possesses attractive application prospects in sensing and optical devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a miniature flexible FBG-based underwater ultrasonic sensor with enhanced pressure sensitivity and bandwidth using a side-polished configuration of ~54 μm depth and ~15 mm length. The opto-mechanical responses of the sensor to acoustic-induced strain in axial and radial receiving modes are investigated and characterize the gain sensitivity dependent on the wavelength/Bragg length ratio. Then, ultrasonic testing in a water tank exhibited a maximum radial acoustic pressure-induced wavelength shift of 91.29 nm/MPa and a noise equivalent acoustic signal level of ~49.6 mPa/Hz1/2 in the range of 40-120 kHz, as well as a good gain flatness of less than 9.4 dB. This is significantly superior to FBG-based hydrophones previously ever reported to our knowledge. The proposed technique greatly simplifies the miniaturized integration of all-optical ultrasonic detectors and could, therefore, be further improved for ultra-high sensitive hydrophones in optoacoustic imaging.

Abstract:In this work, an evanescent Bragg grating sensor inscribed in a few-mode planar polymer waveguide was integrated into microchannel structures and characterized by various chemical applications. The planar waveguide and the microchannels consisted of epoxide-based polymers. The Bragg grating structure was postprocessed by using point-by-point direct inscription technology. By monitoring the central wavelength shift of the reflected Bragg signal, the sensor showed a temperature sensitivity of −47.75 pm/K. Moreover, the functionality of the evanescent field-based measurements is demonstrated with two application examples: the refractive index sensing of different aqueous solutions and gas-phase hydrogen concentration detection. For the latter application, the sensor was additionally coated with a functional layer based on palladium nanoparticles. During the refractive index sensing measurement, the sensor achieved a sensitivity of 6.5 nm/RIU from air to 99.9% pure isopropyl alcohol. For the gas-phase hydrogen detection, the coated sensor achieved a reproducible concentration detection up to 4 vol% hydrogen. According to the reported experimental results, the integrated Bragg-grating-based waveguide sensor demonstrates high potential for applications based on the lab-on-a-chip concept.

Abstract:Flexible epoxy waveguide Bragg gratings are fabricated on a low-modulus TPXTM polymethylpentene polyolefin substrate for an easy to manufacture and low-cost optomechanical sensor pad providing exceedingly multipurpose application potentials. Rectangular EpoCore negative resist strip waveguides are formed employing standard UV mask lithography. Highly persistent Bragg gratings are inscribed directly into the channel waveguides by permanently modifying the local refractive indices through a well-defined KrF excimer laser irradiated +1/-1 order phase mask. The reproducible and vastly versatile sensing capabilities of this easy-to-apply optomechanical sensor pad are demonstrated in the form of an optical pickup for acoustic instruments, a broadband optical accelerometer, and a biomedical vital sign sensor monitoring both respiration and pulse at the same time.

Abstract:A cantilevered microfiber Bragg grating (CMFBG) sensor with high sensitivity and resonant frequency which can be designed as required, has been proposed and demonstrated using experimental, theoretical, and simulation methods. The CMFBG design can have a variable cross-section, and has been created to operate by receiving ultrasonic guided waves through the adhesive used. This allows for the formation of standing waves, when the wave is reflected from the end of the device, and also allows for concentrating the ultrasonic energy using the small fiber diameter that forms the device. Compared to a cantilevered conventional fiber Bragg grating, the CMFBG design proposed demonstrates a significant increase in signal amplitude of 227% for a chirp ultrasonic input and 204% for a pencil lead break input. The device exhibits a detuning phenomenon as its resonant frequency difference differs from that of the standing wave with the cantilevered fiber Bragg grating. In addition, the research carried out has shown that the geometric parameters of the CMFBG design, such as the diameter and the length ratio (between the waist and the taper regions), influence the ultrasonic sensitivity and the resonant frequencies observed.

Abstract:A Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) based on a polymer micro-rod on the end-face of fiber core was fabricated for humidity sensing. The whole fabrication process by using the simple and low-cost drawing-curing method takes less than one minute. The diameter and height of the polymer micro-rod are only 9.2 mu m and 11.3 mu m, respectively. Because of its ultra-compact structure, the rise time and recover time of the sensor have been improved to 291 ms and 886 ms when the relative humidity of the environment changes between 61% and 76%. The proposed humidity sensor is expected to have important applications in bio-pharmaceutics, chemical industry, and environmental science, owing to its simple fabrication process, high sensitivity (659.67 pm/%RH), fast response and good stability.

Abstract:Hybrid optical fibers have been widely investigated in different architectures to build integrated fiber photonic devices and achieve various applications. Here we proposed and fabricated hybrid microfiber waveguides with self-growing polymer nanofilms on the surfaces of microfibers triggered by evanescent field of light for the first time. We have demonstrated the polymer nanofilm of ∼50 nm can be grown on the microfiber with length up to 15 mm. In addition, the roughness of nanofilm can be optimized by controlling the triggering laser power and exposure duration, and the total transmission loss of the fabricated hybrid microfiber is less than 2 dB within a wide wavelength range. The hybrid polymer nanofilm microfiber waveguides have been characterized and their relative humidity (RH) responses have also been tested, indicating a potential for RH sensing. Our fabrication method may also be extended to construct the hybrid microfibers with different functional photopolymer materials.

Abstract:The smallest all-polymer optical fiber Bragg grating based transducer element for pH sensing is presented. We show that, considering it's size and robustness, it out-performs similar state-of-the-art fiber Bragg grating based pH sensors regarding both sensitivity and response time. A 510 $\mu$m thick pH sensitive hydrogel coating is placed on a PMMA-based microstructured polymer optical fiber Bragg grating. The hydrogel expands or contracts depending on the pH and thus changes in pH are monitored by following the fiber strain induced changes in the reflected Bragg wavelength$ \boldsymbol{\lambda _B}$. Prior to applying the hydrogel coating the mPOF is etched from 150 to 80 $\mu$m to enhance sensitivity and surface crazing is introduced with a 50/50 vol solution of acetone and methanol to enhance spreading of the hydrogel during the application and adhesion after cure. With this design, we achieved a sensitivity of ${ \Delta \mathbf {\lambda }_B=\text{73 pm/pH} \pm \text{2 pm/pH}}$ and response times below 4.5 mins. for pH 57 and 47, respectively, and a thermal cross sensitivity of $\text{31.4 pm}/^{\circ}\text{C} \ \pm \text{0.4 pm}/^{\circ}\text{C}$.

Abstract:We propose a novel fiber device based on arc-induced long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in a hollow core silica capillary. This device is made up of a lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF), LPFGs in capillary (CLPFGs), and a lead-out SMF, with a tapered air cavity (TAC) connecting SMF and capillary. The transmissive characteristics of capillary with and without LPFGs are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Mode coupling of CLPFGs at longer wavelength could be enhanced, as well as the sensing performance increases times over the capillary without gratings. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity can reach to be 15 713.5 nm/RIU in the RI range from 1.451 to 1.456. Moreover, with the asymmetric index distribution induced in the capillary, the CLPFGs present vector bending properties that the bending sensitivities are 79.4 and −8.8 nm/ , for bending directions at 0° and 180°, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed device shows negligible change to the external temperature variation, which could solve the cross-sensitivity problem. With the advantages of compactness, low cost, and ease of fabrication, the proposed device is potential in high-sensitivity RI sensing fields and vector bending measurement.

Abstract:Interest in polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings (POFBGs) arises from the different material properties and sensing modalities brought by polymers relative to silica. Polymer fibers typically offer twice the sensitivity to temperature of conventional silica fiber and increased sensitivity to strain overall. In addition, polymer fibers have higher elastic limits and as a result a larger range of operation for physical constraints. While some polymers are effectively humidity insensitive, others present inherent humidity sensitivity. Their organic properties also allow a variety of chemical processes to create (bio)chemical sensors, with the consequences of fiber breakage in situ being less hazardous than silica. These attributes have led to the use of POFBGs for applications that remain complex using silica fibers. This review paper covers the progress toward commercialization and the increasing number of specific applications.
