Abstract:Acetone detection is of significant importance in various industries, from cosmetics to pharmaceuticals, bioengineering, and paints. Sensor manufacturing involves the use of different semiconductor materials as well as different metals for doping and functionalization, allowing them to achieve advanced or unique properties in different sensor applications. In the healthcare field, these sensors play a crucial role in the non-invasive diagnosis of various diseases, offering a potential way to monitor metabolic conditions by analyzing respiration. This article presents the synthesis method, using chemical solutions and rapid thermal annealing technology, to obtain Al-functionalized and Ni-doped copper oxide (Al/CuO:Ni) nanostructured thin films for biosensors. The nanocrystalline thin films are subjected to a thorough characterization, with examination of the morphological properties by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The results reveal notable changes in the surface morphology and structure following different treatments, providing insight into the mechanism of function and selectivity of these nanostructures for gases and volatile compounds. The study highlights the high selectivity of developed Al/CuO:Ni nanostructures towards acetone vapors at different concentrations from 1 ppm to 1000 ppm. Gas sensitivity is evaluated over a range of operating temperatures, indicating optimum performance at 300 °C and 350 °C with the maximum sensor signal (S) response obtained being 45% and 50%, respectively, to 50 ppm gas concentration. This work shows the high potential of developed technology for obtaining Al/CuO:Ni nanostructured thin films as next-generation materials for improving the sensitivity and selectivity of acetone sensors for practical applications as breath detectors in biomedical diagnostics, in particular for diabetes monitoring. It also emphasizes the importance of these sensors in ensuring industrial safety by preventing adverse health and environmental effects of exposure to acetone.

Bimetallic PtAu-Decorated SnO2 Nanospheres Exhibiting Enhanced Gas Sensitivity for Ppb-Level Acetone Detection

Abstract:Acetone is a biomarker found in the expired air of patients suffering from diabetes. Therefore, early and accurate detection of its concentration in the breath of such patients is extremely important. We prepared Tin(IV) oxide (SnO2) nanospheres via hydrothermal treatment and then decorated them with bimetallic PtAu nanoparticles (NPs) employing the approach of in situ reduction. The topology, elemental composition, as well as crystal structure of the prepared materials were studied via field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The findings revealed that bimetallic PtAu-decorated SnO2 nanospheres (PtAu/SnO2) were effectively synthesized as well as PtAu NPs evenly deposited onto the surface of the SnO2 nanospheres. Pure SnO2 nanospheres and PtAu/SnO2 sensors were prepared, and their acetone gas sensitivity was explored. The findings demonstrated that in comparison to pristine SnO2 nanosphere sensors, the sensors based on PtAu/SnO2 displayed superior sensitivity to acetone of 0.166–100 ppm at 300 °C, providing a low theoretical limit of detection equal to 158 ppm. Moreover, the PtAu/SnO2 sensors showed excellent gas response (Ra/Rg= 492.3 to 100 ppm), along with fast response and recovery (14 s/13 s to 10 ppm), good linearity of correlation, excellent repeatability, long-term stability, and satisfactory selectivity at 300 °C. This improved gas sensitivity was because of the electron sensitization of the Pt NPs, the chemical sensitization of the Au NPs, as well as the synergistic effects of bimetallic PtAu. The PtAu/SnO2 sensors have considerable potential for the early diagnosis and screening of diabetes.

Abstract:The concentration of acetone in exhaled breath is an efficient indicator for the diagnosis of diabetes. However, it is difficult to detect acetone in exhaled breath due to the extremely low acetone concentration, rather complex composition and very high humidity. Herein, we report Pt-decorated foam-like Ga-In bimetal oxide nanofibers (Pt-GIO) for trace concentration acetone detection. We found that the Pt-GIO based sensor exhibits enhanced sensing response towards acetone compared with that of Ga-In bimetal oxide (GIO), due to the formation of Schottky contact between Pt and n-type GIO, leading to the increased chemisorbed oxygen. As a result, the Pt-GIO based sensors gives a high response (3.2), short response time (13 s) to 1.8 ppm acetone and very low detection limit (300 ppb). The Pt-GIO sensor also gives good stability and is nearly insensitive to moisture in the range of 40% RH to 95%. These advantages including high response, low detection limit, short response time and high moisture resistance endow Pt-GIO a promising sensing material for acetone detection in exhaled breath.

Abstract:Finding a non-invasive, painless and simple method for monitoring of health parameters and early detection of physiological disorders is of utmost importance in today's world. Breath analysis has been attracted tremendous attention as a potentially powerful tool for studying the medical diagnosis diseases because of its noninvasive nature and capability of real-time monitoring. For metabolic monitoring, several candidates are attractive. As an example, acetone has been considered as a main breath biomarker for diabetes. In addition to diabetes, fat burn monitoring is another application for breath acetone. This article provides a comprehensive study on the state of the art research activities in gas sensor field. It mainly focuses on the metal oxide semiconductor based acetone sensors such as WO3, ZnO, SnO2, Fe2O3, In2O3, TiO2, Co2O3, NiO and etc. Several different type of acetone sensor technologies such as polymer based chemiresistors, mixed potential, optical and mass sensitive devices are presented as well. The effect of nano structures and morphology on response of sensors are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of different techniques used for metal oxide semiconductor synthesis are also discussed. Finally, sensor arrays with different receptor materials and transducers for breath analyzing are discussed.

Abstract:Human breath investigation offers a non-invasive and quick strategy for recognizing different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are markers for various diseases. Scientists have shown that breath acetone is a successful biomarker of Type 2 diabetes which is the most common type of diabetes. The generation of acetone is a consequence of the body processing fats as an alternative of glucose to produce energy. Thus, detection of breath acetone can be a rapid, viable, and patient compliant alternative to the conventional methods of blood glucose determination. To achieve this goal, metal oxide nanostructures with various shapes through different synthesis routes in the nanometer scale, can be used. Owing to its properties such as high surface-to-volume ratios and subsequently large number of surface sites exposed to acetone gas, metal oxide nanostructures facilitate a well-built gas-sensing layer interaction and consequently compared to conventional materials, present a higher sensitivity. This work, presents the progress in metal oxides nanostructures (semiconductor nanomaterials) as gas sensing materials for the exhaled acetone detection, which offers the possibility to help people living with diabetes to screen their disease. Abstract:Loading noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) on metal oxides is an effective way to solve the challenge of low sensitivity and poor selectivity of semiconductor sensors in detecting acetone in breath. However, noble metal NPs synthesized by traditional methods suffer from problems including irregular grain shape and uneven grain size, leading to a decrease in gas sensing property. Herein, we loaded atomically precise Au144(SC2H4Ph)60 nanoclusters (NCs) on In2O3 nanospheres to construct Au-loaded In2O3 materials (xAu144/IO) for detecting acetone. The gas sensing properties of xAu144/IO were optimized, and the correlation between acetone responses and the size of Au NPs was studied. Among xAu144/IO, 3Au144/IO has higher responses to acetone with good selectivity, short response/recovery time, low detection limit, and excellent long-term stability. In addition, the dynamic responses to acetone exhibit the size dependence of gold nanoparticles. More attractively, the tests of simulated exhalation indicate that the sensor based on 3Au144/IO can distinguish diabetic patients from healthy people, which is further verified by detecting the breath of a diabetic. The strategy of loading atomically precise nanoclusters adopted in this work provides a new method for the design and preparation of highly selective acetone sensing materials for breath analysis.

Abstract:Apoptosis, described by Kerr[1] in 1972, plays a key role in all types of regulated cellular processes in multicellular organisms. It is defined as a morphologic change, including fragmentation of the DNA, cell shrinkage, dilation of the endoplasmatic reticulum, cell fragmentation and formation of apoptotic bodies[2,3]. One of the abilities of apoptotic cell is to trigger its own engulfment by phagocytic cells prior to cell lysis, which is crucial to the avoidance of the tissue damage and inflammation associated with necrosis[4]. Apoptotic cells lose membrane phospholipid asymmetry and expose phosphatidylserine (PS) on the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane, macrophages then phagocytose apoptotic cells after specific recognition of the exposed PS[5]. Annexin V (AV), having a high affinity for PS in the presence of Ca2+ ions[6] and inhibition to PS-dependent procoagulant reactions[7], is proved to be a very useful general probe for early apoptosis-associated membrane change on live cells before the nuclear condensation events and fragmentation of the DNA[8]. Gastric carcinoma is estimated to be one of the most frequent cancers in the world. According to Lanren’s classification[9], gastric carcinoma can be divided into adenocarcinomas of diffuse and intestinal type, which differ in growth pattern, morphology, and some phenotypic markers. Recently, apoptotic index and apoptotic genes have been found different in both types[10,11]. In this study, we investigated the quantitations of early apoptosis in both intestinal and diffuse gastric carcinoma and their adjacent non-neoplastic tissues with regard to classification and differentiation, and whether the exposure of PS could be inhibited by Bcl-2 protein through various pathways.

Abstract:Diabetes mellitus (DM), an ailment caused by unregulated blood sugar levels, can lead to the failure of more than one organ in patients. Currently, blood tests are being conducted in scientific trials to analyse and track blood sugar and ketone levels. In this method, a drop of blood from a pricked finger is placed on a sensitive strip area, which is then pre-inserted into an electronic device to be analysed. However, this method is painful, invasive, and costly, which can be unsafe if not handled properly. Human breath analysis is a rapid and non-invasive approach for detecting different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which could be indicators of various illnesses. In patients with DM, the body produces excessive amounts of ketones together with acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate (BOHB), and acetone. Acetone is exhaled in the breath. It is produced when the body metabolizes fat, instead of glucose, for energy. Conventional exhalation analysis techniques are based entirely on spectrometric strategies; however, they are becoming increasingly appealing from a clinical point of view with the advancement of gas sensors. This study describes modern-day improvements to semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors for the detection of exhaled acetone. Since 2011, all the sensor materials have been used to detect low concentrations of acetone gas (0.1 ppm–20 ppm). Several parameters that affect the performance of the sensor device are mentioned in detail, including the composite materials, morphology, doping, temperature, humidity, acetone concentration, and stability of the sensor. Finally, the applicability of the sensor is discussed.

We found that the master was suitable for an optical waveguide because it had a simple process and a fine surface profile.

Abstract:Acetone in human exhaled breath can be used as a biomarker for the early diagnosis of diabetes, because exhaled gas contains a large amount of water and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), improving the selectivity is still a great challenge. In this work, 1D Co3O4 derived from MOF-74 with high moisture resistance and low detection limit was synthesized and used for the detection of acetone markers in human exhaled gas. The 1D porous Co3O4 with different average grain sizes were obtained by precise control of the MOF-74 pyrolysis temperature in a range of 300–450 ℃. The static gas sensitivity test results indicate that the MOF-74-derived Co3O4 at a pyrolysis temperature of 300 ℃ showed the highest response to 50 ppm acetone at an optimal operating temperature of 175 ℃. In the presence of four interfering gases including ethanol, methanol, formaldehyde and ammonia, the prepared Co3O4 sensor showed good selectivity to acetone. In addition, the exhalation simulation tests show that the detection limit of Co3O4 sensor for acetone in exhaled gas is as low as 500 ppb. Moreover, as the relative humidity increases, the initial resistance of the Co3O4 sensor increases, but the response value to 1.8 ppm acetone at 175 ℃ is almost unchanged. The good acetone sensing properties in exhaled gas were attributed to the unique structure of MOF-74 after pyrolysis, which prevented the nanoparticle agglomeration from occurring and provided more exposed active sites. Furthermore, the effective catalytic activity of surface Co2+ in the Co3O4 tetrahedral ligand of the cubic spinel structure enhances the sensing performance of acetone. With the advantages of low detection limit and high anti-humidity, gas sensors based on Co3O4 derived from MOF-74 are expected to become a potential candidate for the detection of acetone in exhaled gas of patients with diabetes in clinical non-invasive testing.

Abstract:Sensitive and selective detection of acetone in human exhaled breath plays an important role in the diagnosis of diabetes. However, obtaining a reliable response to ppb levels of acetone and avoiding cross-sensitivity due to the large amount of moisture in exhaled breath are still great challenges. In this work, a type of acetone sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity and moisture resistance is reported. Electrospun In2O3 nanowires with a controllable Pt core (Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowires) are designed and prepared as sensitive layers. A mesoporous silica molecular sieve is further integrated as the moisture filter layer. The Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowire-based sensor exhibits a highly improved response compared with a sensor based on pure In2O3 nanowires due to the probable increase in surface resistance and the introduction of p–n junctions after rational design of the structure. In addition, a good performance in terms of the fast dynamic process, selectivity and long-term stability is also achieved, and the detection limit can be as low as 10 ppb, which is much lower than the concentration level of 1.8 ppm in the exhaled breath of diabetic patients. The influence of the large amount of moisture is greatly weakened by using the molecular sieve as a moisture filter layer, leading to much improved sensitivity in clinical sample detection among healthy and diabetic patients. Based on the optimized composite structure of the Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowire sensor and moisture filter layer, a simple portable sensing prototype is successfully fabricated. The reported Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowires and the acetone sensing approach open up a new opportunity for a simple, inexpensive, and noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:Ketones are well-known biomarkers of fat oxidation produced in the liver as a result of lipolysis. These biomarkers include acetoacetic acid and β-hydroxybutyric acid in the blood/urine and acetone in our breath and skin. Monitoring ketone production in the body is essential for people who use caloric intake deficit to reduce body weight or use ketogenic diets for wellness or therapeutic treatments. Current methods to monitor ketones include urine dipsticks, capillary blood monitors, and breath analyzers. However, these existing methods have certain disadvantages that preclude them from being used more widely. In this work, we introduce a novel acetone sensor device that can detect acetone levels in breath and overcome the drawbacks of existing sensing approaches. The critical element of the device is a robust sensor with the capability to measure acetone using a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) chip and convenient data analysis from a red, green, and blue deconvolution imaging approach. The acetone sensor device demonstrated sensitivity of detection in the micromolar-concentration range, selectivity for detection of acetone in breath, and a lifetime stability of at least one month. The sensor device utility was probed with real tests on breath samples using an established blood ketone reference method.

Investigation of Acetone Vapour Sensing Properties of a Ternary Composite of Doped Polyaniline, Reduced Graphene Oxide and Chitosan Using Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor

Abstract:This work reports the use of a ternary composite that integrates p-Toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI), chitosan, and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as the active sensing layer of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The SPR sensor is intended for application in the non-invasive monitoring and screening of diabetes through the detection of low concentrations of acetone vapour of less than or equal to 5 ppm, which falls within the range of breath acetone concentration in diabetic patients. The ternary composite film was spin-coated on a 50-nm-thick gold layer at 6000 rpm for 30 s. The structure, morphology and chemical composition of the ternary composite samples were characterized by FTIR, UV-VIS, FESEM, EDX, AFM, XPS, and TGA and the response to acetone vapour at different concentrations in the range of 0.5 ppm to 5 ppm was measured at room temperature using SPR technique. The ternary composite-based SPR sensor showed good sensitivity and linearity towards acetone vapour in the range considered. It was determined that the sensor could detect acetone vapour down to 0.88 ppb with a sensitivity of 0.69 degree/ppm with a linearity correlation coefficient of 0.997 in the average SPR angular shift as a function of the acetone vapour concentration in air. The selectivity, repeatability, reversibility, and stability of the sensor were also studied. The acetone response was 87%, 94%, and 99% higher compared to common interfering volatile organic compounds such as propanol, methanol, and ethanol, respectively. The attained lowest detection limit (LOD) of 0.88 ppb confirms the potential for the utilisation of the sensor in the non-invasive monitoring and screening of diabetes.

Abstract:In recent years, the development of sensors capable of detecting acetone levels has garnered attention in health monitoring and personalized medicine. Acetone in the body, a ketone body produced during metabolic processes, has emerged as a promising biomarker for various health conditions, including diabetes, obesity, and metabolic disorders. Its presence in exhaled breath offers a non-invasive means of assessing metabolic health, presenting a unique opportunity for continuous monitoring and early intervention. This research investigated the use of a PANI/PMMA polymer sensor array to measure acetone gas. Breath samples and standard substances (acetone, butyric acid) were collected using a hygienic mask and measured with an electronic nose device. The tests showed the sensor could classify between a blank mask, acetone, butyric acid, and breath odors.

Abstract:This work presents the ability of WO3-based sensors to detect low traces of acetone, specifically within the range of 0.25–5 ppm, specific to the in-field atmosphere. The WO3 powder was synthesised through the hydrothermal method. Morpho-structural investigations showed a monoclinic structure and a good crystallization of the WO3 powder, containing well-grown and faceted grains along low-index crystallographic planes. The paste obtained by mixing the powder with propanediol was screen-printed as a thick layer onto commercial alumina substrates, obtaining the chemical sensors. A dynamic computer-controlled Gas Mixing System was utilized to ensure controlled airflow with variable relative humidity and acetone concentrations. The sensor response was explained based on physico-chemical equations, taking into consideration pre-adsorbed species of oxygen and water, both of which are relevant constituents of atmospheric conditions. The results highlight the applicative potential of WO3, having a good signal-to-noise ratio in relative humidity conditions up to 90% and a pronounced sensitive selectivity to acetone.

Abstract:Pt-decorated In2O3 hollow microspheres were prepared using a template and reflux method. The size of the prepared carbon templates was adjusted from 200 nm to 1.3 μm by introducing chloroplatinic acid during the hydrothermal process. At the same time, Pt nanoparticles inside the carbon layer were protected from oxidation and agglomeration. Also, the folds created on the surface of the hollow sphere during shrinkage led to a substantial increase in specific surface area. The response of the In2O3-based sensor toward acetone was significantly enhanced by the addition of Pt decoration. This improvement can be attributed to the increased availability of active sites for the target gas and the consequential alteration of the energy band structure. In addition, high response sensitivity, rapid dynamic processes, long-term reliability, and selectivity have all been achieved. The detectable limit is less than 1 ppm, which might satisfy the 1.8 ppm threshold value in the exhaled breath of patients with diabetes. Consequently, the proposed sensor has great sensitivity and can detect low-concentration of acetone, making it an ideal choice for applications such as monitoring daily dietary intake, managing diabetes, and inspecting industrial production processes.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can originate from cellular metabolisms and are found in human exhalation, urine, feces, blood, sweat, saliva, and milk. Thus, changes in VOCs levels indicate changes in metabolic status of the cells and can be used for non-invasive diagnosis of metabolic diseases or even different cancers. The concentration of acetone as one of the VOCs, found in human exhalation, increases during certain diseases like diabetes, indicating its potential importance as a biomarker in diabetes diagnosis. Herein, a chemiresistive sensor was developed in which a composite of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was used as the sensing element for acetone gas detection. The adsorption of acetone gas on polymer cavities causes swelling of the polymer and decrease of the current (increase in resistance). The sensor was characterized in terms of linear range, sensitivity, detection limit and selectivity. The limit of detection (LOD) and the response time were 66 ppm and 3.7 ± 1 s, respectively. The target was successfully distinguished from other analytes when PCA-LDA analysis was used. This sensor can be part of an array of smart sensors detecting different VOCs related to a disease, followed by extraction of VOC fingerprint of the disease by using algorithms.
