Abstract:A recently emerged reversible shape memory effect greatly extends the capability of shape memory polymers and their practical potential. Physical confinement and chemical fixation are individually known to be effective in introducing network anisotropy essential for reversible shape memory. Herein, we demonstrate that synergetic combination of these two mechanisms effectively diversifies the shape-shifting behavior. Specifically, we introduce a transesterification catalyst into a network containing two crystalline phases: poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(ω-pentadecalactone) (PPDL). The reversible shape memory behavior of the resulting system can be programmed via the physical confinement by the PPDL phase and the chemical plasticity by the dynamic ester exchange. We illustrate that the two programming mechanisms can operate in a noninterfering way that allows achieving a synergetic benefit, notably realizing a zero-set reversible shape memory behavior. Our study points to a direction in diversifying the behaviors of reversible shape memory polymers and expands the scope for potential engineering devices.
Phase transformation of Y-Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composite ceramic annealed in air

Abstract:Y2O3 and CeO2 co-doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystals containing 0 to 20 wt% Al2O3 were sintered for 2 h at 1400 degrees C to 1600 degrees C. Phase stability and mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated after annealed at 300 degrees C in air. The results show that, a small addition of Al2O3 particles inhibited the tetragonal to monoclinic transformation in air. The flexural strength and fracture 1/2 toughness of the composite when added 15wt% Al2O3 and sintered at 1450 degrees C reached 731 MPa and 9.9 MPa center dot m(1/2) respectively, after annealing for 240 h.
Phase transformation and incompatibility at grain boundaries in zirconia-based shape memory ceramics: a micromechanics-based simulation study

Abstract:Zirconia-based shape memory ceramics (SMCs) exhibit anisotropic mechanical response when undergoing elastic deformations as well as during austenite–martensite phase transformation. This behavior results in different types of strain incompatibility at grain boundaries, which we study here using a micromechanical model. A single-crystal model is implemented to provide a full mechanistic three-dimensional description of the anisotropic elastic as well as martensitic transformation stress–strain response, including non-Schmid behavior caused by the significant volume change during martensitic transformation. This model was calibrated to and validated against compression tests of single-crystal zirconia micro-pillars conducted previously, and then used to model bi-crystals. Upon the introduction of a grain boundary, the simulation provides detailed information on the nucleation and evolution of martensite variants and stress distribution at grain boundaries. We identify bi-crystal configurations which result in very large stress concentrations at very low deformations due to elastic incompatibility, as well as others where the elastic incompatibility is relatively low and stress concentrations only occur at large transformation strains. We also show how this approach can be used to explore the misorientation space for quantifying the level of elastic and transformation incompatibility at SMCs grain boundaries.

Abstract:Shape memory ceramics, such as yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ), offer unique properties including ultra-high operating temperatures and high resistance to oxidation. However, they are susceptible to formation of defects during manufacturing and/or by mechanical deformation. To completely take advantage of their shape memory properties, it is necessary to fully understand the nano-structural evolution of defects under external stimuli. In this study, defect evolution behaviors in YSTZ nanopillars are investigated by atomistic simulations. Two characteristic orientations of \(\left[ {01\bar 1} \right]\) and [001] are selected to represent the dominant deformation mechanisms of phase transformation and dislocation migration, respectively. Volume expansion associated with the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation is observed to promote healing of crack and void. Atom stress analyses reveal stress concentrations along the newly formed monoclinic phase bands. A critical crack width is identified, less than which the crack can be fully closed in compression. For [001]-oriented YSTZ nanopillars, dislocation migration leads to formations of an amorphous phase, which also assist the crack and void closure process. The revealed crack/void healing mechanisms may provide a path for mitigating internal defects that influences the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of shape memory ceramics.

Abstract:Applications of shape memory alloys require them have the ability to undergo back and forth through the solid-to-solid martensitic phase transformations for many times without degradation of properties (termed "reversibility"). Low hysteresis and small migration of transformation temperature under cycling are the macroscopic manifestation of high reversibility. By the crystallographic theory of martensite, materials with certain crystalline symmetry and geometric compatibility tend to form no-stressed transformation interface and have excellent functional stability. In the theory, several conditions that corresponding to extremely low hysteresis are specified. Stronger compatibility conditions which lead to even better reversibility have been theoretically proposed, those conditions are called "cofactor conditions". Recently, for the first time, experimental results find out the shape memory alloy Au30Cu25Zn45 that closely satisfy the cofactor conditions. Enhanced reversibility with thermal hysteresis of 2.045 degrees C, and the unusual riverine microstructure are found in Au30Cu25Zn45. However, their studies are limited to crystallographic analysis, and haven't provided enough details of microstructural evolution in martensitic transformation. Furthermore, it is the evolution of microstructures that leads to an extremely low thermal hysteresis in this alloy. Thus, making clear of evolution of microstructures in martensitic transformation in this alloy is of great importance. So, in the present work, the phase field method was applied, in which the microstructure is described by Landau theory of martensitic transformation, Khachaturyan-Shatalov's phase field microelasticity theory, and thermodynamics gradient to study the microstructural evolution of martensitic transformation in Au30Cu25Zn45, trying to figure out pathway of formation of the unusual microstructure with satisfying cofactor conditions. The simulation results show that during the martensitic transformation, quad-junctions composed of four different variants are formed. These junctions grow layer by layer, and the previously formed layer has larger size, thus leading to the formation of the experimentally reported "riverine" microstructure of martensite in Au30Cu25Zn45. Further analysis based on the crystallographic theory of martensitic transformation shows that in Au30Cu25Zn45 6 groups of variants can form such kind of quad-junction, and each group of variants can form 4 kinds of type 1/type 2 twin pairs and two kinds of compound twin pairs. All of the quad-junctions in this transformation are composed of four of those 6 twin pairs in each variant group, and the twin walls of these four twin pairs are perpendicular to each other.

Abstract:Cermets generally exhibit a trade-off between strength and energy dissipation capacity. By applying a dual design strategy combining bioinspired architecting and metastability engineering, we developed a transforming interpenetrating-phase cermet made from zirconia ceramic preform infiltrated with an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. The cermet micro-pillars possessed compressive yield strengths of 773 ± 62 MPa and energy dissipation densities of 110 ± 8 MJ·m −3 , 50% and 45% higher than those of the monolithic Al alloy, respectively. These results are attributed to the interpenetrating-phase architecture, stress-induced martensitic transformation in the ceramics, robust interfacial bonding, and high-density dislocations near the interfaces. By combining the bioinspired architecting and metastability engineering strategies, we developed a cermet made from phase-transforming ceramic with an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy with high strength and energy dissipation density.

Abstract:Shape memory ceramics (SMCs), while exhibiting high strength, sizeable recoverable strain, and substantial energy damping, tend to shatter under load and have low reversibility. Recent developments in SMCs have shown significant promise in enhancing the reversibility of the shape memory phase transformation by tuning the lattice parameters and transformation temperatures through alloying. While first-principles methods, such as Density Functional Theory, can predict the lattice parameters and enthalpy at zero Kelvin, calculating the transformation temperature from free energy at high temperatures is impractical. Empirical potentials can calculate transformation temperatures efficiently for large system sizes but lack compositional transferability. In this work, we develop a model to predict transformation temperatures and lattice parameters for the Zirconia-Ceria solid solutions. We construct a Machine Learning Inter-Atomic Potential (MLIAP) using an initial dataset of DFT simulations, which is then iteratively expanded using active learning. We utilize reversible scaling to compute the free energy as a function of composition and temperature, from which the transformation temperatures are determined. These transformation temperatures match experimental trends and accurately predict the phase boundary. Finally, we compare other relevant design parameters (e.g., transformation volume change) to demonstrate the applicability of MLIAPs in designing shape memory ceramics.

Abstract:Microstructure, martensitic transformation and mechanical properties of an ultrafine-grained Ti44Ni47Nb9 shape memory alloy processed by equal channel angular pressing were investigated. The as-ECAP processed sample is characterized by an inhomogeneous and refined microstructure. In β-Nb phase-rich region, the grains of matrix are elongated with high density dislocations. In β-Nb phase-free region, the microstructure is partial recovery and characterized by near-equiaxed grains. The heterogeneous microstructure is attributed to presence of β-Nb phase. Martensitic transformation behavior of the as-ECAP processed sample is characterized by a single-stage transformation. The thermal cycling stability of transformation and the mechanical properties are considerably improved due to a strengthening effect resulting from refined grain size and high dislocation density.
Phase inversion in a lightweight high Al content refractory high-entropy alloy

Abstract:Adding Al is an important strategy to obtain ultrahigh specific strength in BCC refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs). However, the main structure typically transitions from disordered BCC to ordered B2 with increasing Al concentration, leading to poor ductility. In the present study, a phase inversion in a high-Al-content B2-RHEA (Zr40Ti28Nb12Al20) was systematically studied through thermo-mechanical treatment. The grains of the single B2 phase transformed inversely to the BCC + B2 microstructure with a dispersion of spherical B2 precipitates in the BCC grains. The evolution of the microstructure began with the decomposition of the B2 phase into Al-rich and Al-poor regions. The subsequent coarsening of the Al-rich B2 precipitates continuously consumes Al and Zr atoms from the solution. The depletion of Al and Zr in the matrix drives it to gradually form the disordered BCC structure and eventually transform to a single BCC phase matrix. This phase inversion enhanced tensile ductility of the RHEA while still maintaining its high specific strength. The current study provides a novel idea for inhibiting Al-induced brittleness of RHEAs at high Al content.
Enhanced Mechanical Properties in Ceramic Multilayer Composites Through Integrating Crystallographic Texture and Second-Phase Toughening

Abstract:Inherent brittleness and low mechanical reliability usually inhibit the application of ceramic materials in many structural applications. In this work, we demonstrate that integrating crystallographic texture and second-phase toughening strategies can effectively improve fracture resistance and mechanical reliability in alumina multilayer composites. Composites consisted of equiaxed (1-x)Al2O3-xZrO2 and highly [0001]-textured Al2O3 layers were fabricated, and effects of ZrO2 amount on fracture behavior and mechanical properties of the composites were studied. Increasing ZrO2 amount x results in larger thermal expansion difference between equiaxed and textured layers. The composites with equiaxed layers containing 30 vol% ZrO2 exhibit high apparent fracture toughness Kapt, c -11.7 MPa.m1/2 and work of fracture gamma WOF -1540 J/m2, which correspond respectively to about 260% and 410% enhancements relative to those without ZrO2 addition. Moreover, adding ZrO2 remarkably reduces sensitivity of failure stress to flaw size in the multilayer composites, and the failure stress substantially increases with increasing ZrO2 content. The greatly enhanced mechanical performance achieved here can be mainly attributed to higher magnitude of compressive stresses, more crack bifurcations and longer crack deflection paths within the textured layers. This work can provide important guidelines for developing novel "bio-inspired" materials with improved fracture resistance and flaw tolerance behavior.

Abstract:The stress-induced tetragonal to monoclinic (t-m) zirconia phase transformation can provide a certain degree of plasticity to Ceria-stabilized (Ce-TZP) zirconia-based composites. Characterizing and monitoring this phase transition on a millimeter-size range, within the bulk and in-situ remain a challenge. In this work, the mechanical behavior of Ce-TZP based composite was studied in tension, combining microscopy and synchrotron X-ray refraction techniques. In contrast with microscopy methods, which only provides surface information, X-ray refraction radiography (SXRR) allowed the visualization of all the transformation bands, over the entire length and thickness of tested specimens, opening up new avenues for in-situ stress-induced t-m transformation studies.

Abstract:Ceramics including oxides, carbides, nitrides, borides, carbonitrides, silicates, and MAX phases have wide applications in electrode materials, high-temperature structural materials, and anticorrosive materials for harsh environments. However, the difficulty in processing ceramics with complex shapes from green powders has been restricting applications in emerging areas. Herein, polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) were used to assist the pressureless processing of MAX phase particles. The processing temperature could be lowered by 400 to 600 °C, which is favorable for both industrialization and engineering applications. The good processability of MAX-preceramic polymer mixtures and high accuracy of replica from preceramic polymer make it possible to fabricate artificial objects with complex shapes and fine texture. Abstract:Some microscopic samples of zirconia-based shape memory ceramics (SMCs) have shown full martensitic phase transformation (MPT) over multiple loading cycles without cracking. However, the occurrence of MPT is strongly influenced by grain orientation. Depending on the specific grain orientation relative to the loading direction, alternative mechanisms such as plastic slip and fracture may emerge. This study introduces a phase-field (PF) based framework that integrates a PF-MPT model, a PF fracture model, and a crystal viscoplasticity model to investigate the effects of grain orientation on MPT, plastic slip, and fracture mechanisms in SMC micropillars. Single crystal micropillars are created to distinguish the orientations that facilitate each mechanism. A wide range of grain orientations are found to predominantly exhibit MPT. Micropillars with grain orientations close to the (100) and (001) directions primarily experience fracture, with minimal plastic slip. Additionally, samples oriented along the (110) direction show a significant amount of plastic slip. A pole figure is constructed to elucidate the interplay between MPT, cracking, and slip under compressive loading conditions. This research provides valuable insights into the intricate behavior of SMCs under different loading scenarios, crucial for optimizing their performance in practical applications.

Abstract:Using the methods of electron microscopy and X-ray analysis in combination with measurements of the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility, the authors have obtained data on the peculiar features of pre-martensitic states and martensitic transformations, as well as subsequent decomposition, in the alloys with shape memory effect of Cu-14wt%Al-3wt%Ni and Cu-13.5wt%Al-3.5wt%Ni. For the first time, we established the microstructure, phase composition, mechanical properties, and microhardness of the alloys obtained in the nanocrystalline state as a result of severe plastic deformation under high pressure torsion and subsequent annealing. A crystallographic model of the martensite nucleation and the rearrangements β1→β1' and β1→γ1' are proposed based on the analysis of the observed tweed contrast and diffuse scattering in the austenite and the internal defects in the substructure of the martensite.
Dual-Phase Super-Strong and Elastic Ceramic

Abstract:Ceramic materials exhibit very high stiffness and extraordinary strength, but they typically suffer from brittleness. Amorphization and size confinement are commonly used to reinforce materials. However, the inverse Hall-Petch effect and the shear-band softening effect usually limit further improvement of their performance under a critical size. With an optimum structure design, we demonstrate that dual-phase zirconia nanowires (DP-ZrO2 NWs) with nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous matrix as a strengthening phase can overcome these problems simultaneously. As a result of this structure, in situ tensile tests demonstrate that the mechanical properties have been enormously improved in a way that does not follow both the inverse Hall-Petch effect and the shear band softening effect. The elastic strain approaches ∼7%, and the ultimate strength is 3.52 GPa, accompanied by a high toughness of ∼151 MJ m-3, making the DP-ZrO2 NW composite the strongest and toughest ZrO2 ever achieved. The findings provide a way to improve the mechanical properties of ceramics in a controllable manner, which may serve as a pervasive approach to be broadly applied to a variety of materials.
Evaluation of Phase Transformation and Mechanical Properties of Metastable Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia by Nanoindentation.

Abstract:Microscopical nonuniformity of mechanical properties caused by phase transformation is one of the main reasons for the failure of the materials in engineering applications. Accurate measurement of the mechanical properties of each phase is of virtual importance, in which the traditional approach like Vickers hardness cannot accomplish, due to the large testing range. In this study, nanoindentation is firstly used to analyze the mechanical properties of each phase and demonstrate the phase transformation in thermal barrier coatings during high-temperature aging. The distribution of T-prime metastable tetragonal phase, cubic and tetragonal phase is determined by mapping mode of nanoindentation and confirmed with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope observation. The results show that during 1300 °C aging, the phase transition of metastable Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia induces the quick decrease of T′ phase content and an increase of T and C phases accordingly. It is found that there are some fluctuations in the mechanical properties of individual phase during annealing. The hardness and Young’s modulus of T′ increase at first 9 h, due to the precipitation of Y3+ lean T phase and then decrease to a constant value accompanied by the precipitation of Y3+ rich C phase. The relevant property of C phases also increases a little firstly and then decreases to a constant, due to the homogenization of Y3+ content, while the hardness and Young’s modulus of T phase remain unchanged. After aging of 24h the hardness of T′, C and T phases are 20.5 GPa, 21.3 GPa and 19.1 GPa, respectively. The Young’s modulus of T′, C and T phases are 274 GPa, 275 GPa and 265 GPa, respectively. Present work reveals the availability of nanoindentation method to demonstrate the phase transformation and measure mechanical properties of composites. It also provides an efficient application for single phase identification of ceramics.

Abstract:Compared with single-phase ceramics, the thermal shock crack propagation mechanism of multiphase layered ceramics is more complex. There is no experimental method and theoretical framework that can fully reveal the thermal shock damage mechanism of ceramic materials. Therefore, a multiphase phase-field fracture model including the temperature dependence of material for thermal shock-induced fracture of multilayer ceramics is established. In this study, the effects of residual stress on the crack propagation of ATZ (Al2O3-5%tZrO2)/AMZ (Al2O3-30%mZrO2) layered ceramics with different layer thickness ratios, layers, and initial temperatures under bending and thermal shock were investigated. Simulation results of the fracture phase field under four-point bending are in good agreement with the experimental results, and the crack propagation shows a step shape, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. With constant thickness, high-strength compressive stress positively changes with the layer thickness ratio, which contributes to crack deflection. The cracks of the ceramic material under thermal shock have hierarchy and regularity. When the layer thickness ratio is constant, the compressive residual stress decreases with the increase in the layer number, and the degree of thermal shock crack deflection decreases.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, bulk Zr 3 Al 3 C 5 -based ceramics were synthesized by the infiltration of Al-Si melt into zirconium carbide (ZrC) perform. The phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of as-fabricated ceramics were studied. The results demonstrate that Si is more effective to reduce the twin boundary energy of ZrC than Al, and thus promotes the decrease of formation temperature of Zr 3 Al 3 C 5 . With the infiltration temperatures increasing from 1200 to 1500 °C, the Zr 3 Al 3 C 5 content increases from 10 to 49 vol%, which is contributed to the increase of flexural strength from 62±9 to 222±10 MPa, and fracture toughness ( K IC ) from 2.8±0.2 to 4.1±0.3 MPa·m 1/2 . The decrease of mechanical properties for the samples fabricated at 1600 °C is ascribed to the abnormal growth of Zr 3 Al 3 C 5 grains.

Abstract:Stress-induced martensitic transformation can occur in granular shape memory materials when individual particles experience high stresses and transform from a high-symmetry austenite phase to a low symmetry martensite phase. This involves a highly heterogeneous distribution of the driving force and very low mechanical constraint for martensite nucleation, so the transformation behavior can be dramatically different from the well-documented case of monolithic solids. In this work, we investigate the stress-induced martensitic transformation in granular shape memory ceramic packings, which consist of single-crystal micro-particles of ZrO2-12 at%CeO2 and ZrO2-15 at%CeO2. Through in situ neutron diffraction, we study how the phase fraction, lattice strain, and integral peak broadness evolve during external loading, unloading, and subsequent heating. Several peculiar features are discovered, including (i) a continuous mode of transformation with a wide range of transformation loads, (ii) co-evolution of the packing structure, contact deformation, and martensitic transformation, and (iii) a strong correlation between the peak broadening and the transformed phase fraction. In addition, we show the first direct evidence of reversible stress-induced martensitic transformation in granular materials. We finally discuss the mechanism for martensite nucleation and growth in granular packings and show how that leads to the observed transformation characteristics. (C) 2019 Acta Materialia Inc.
