Abstract:In early 1978, the American Museum of Natural History appointed Dr. John Van Couvering as Editor-in-Chief of Micropaleontology Press, a program that began as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in 1935 and had been housed at the Museum since 1942. For John, this was the beginning of a 38 year-commitment to the dissemination of knowledge on the microscopic shells of protists, through cataloguing and editing scientific journals. While John officially retired in 2016, he continued to volunteer his time and expertise until shortly before his passing on May 22, 2023.

Abstract:Vertebrate palaeontology, essential for understanding the evolutionary processes of backboned animals, has witnessed substantial increase in research activity and publications over the past decade. This bibliometric analysis utilising the data from the DeepBone database, which includes 9,255 literature entries, with 8,259 overlapping entries from the Web of Science, to capture these changes. Our analysis reveals a continuous growth in publication volumes over the decade, alongside a marked expansion in interdisciplinary collaborations and the integration of innovative technological methodologies. The contribution of key regions such as the U.S.A., UK, Argentina, and China underscores the global collaboration in vertebrate palaeontology. The EU, despite its foundational economic and political union focus, stands out as a key contributor in vertebrate palaeontology, showing its extensive influence on scientific collaboration and research funding. A thematic exploration using keyword analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) analysis identifies prominent research themes, highlighting the field's towards integrated research approaches. This study offers a quantitative overview of the recent decade in vertebrate palaeontology, providing insights into dynamic trends, major contributions, and future research directions in the field.

Svante Pääbo s’est vu attribuer le prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine en 2022 pour ses travaux en paléogénétique. Né le 20 avril 1955 à Stockholm, Svante Pääbo a soutenu sa thèse de doctorat en 1986 à l’université d’Uppsala en Suède. Après plusieurs séjours post-doctoraux en Suisse (Institute for Molecular Biology, University of Zürich), puis aux États-Unis (Department of Biochemistry, University of California at Berkeley), il a été nommé professeur de biologie à l’université de Munich en Allemagne. En 1997, il fonde un centre de recherche en paléogénétique au sein de l’Institut Max Planck d’anthropologie évolutionniste à Leipzig en Allemagne. Là, grâce à des soutiens financiers importants, il développe un tout nouveau champ disciplinaire : la paléogénomique humaine, une nouvelle science qui consiste en l’extraction, la lecture et l’analyse de l’ADN dans des restes de fossiles humains afin d’en déterminer l’histoire.

Abstract:Dr. Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark (Branemark), a Swedish professor of anatomy, is widely acknowledged as a pioneer in modern implant dentistry. His accidental discovery of the strong bond between titanium and bone, which he named "osseointegration," signifies a revolutionary progression in dentistry. This significant contribution has earned him global recognition among scholars and the general public. His work, which spans across disciplines, has introduced a new era of implant reconstruction and fostered the formulation of principles rooted in bone biology. This interdisciplinary advancement has paved the way for diverse craniofacial and orthopedic applications, including facial prostheses and limb replacements, owing to titanium's biocompatibility within the human body. This article stands as a tribute to Brånemark and his remarkable innovation. Despite not being a dentist, Brånemark, an orthopedic surgeon, has left an enduring legacy in dental implantology that continues to impact the field today and will undoubtedly do so in the future, deserving lasting recognition.

Abstract:Estimates for animal antiquity exhibit a significant disconnect between those from molecular clocks, which indicate crown animals evolved ∼800 million years ago (Ma), and those from the fossil record, which extends only ∼574 Ma. Taphonomy is often held culpable: early animals were too small/soft/fragile to fossilise, or the circumstances that preserve them were uncommon in the early Neoproterozoic. We assess this idea by comparing Neoproterozoic fossilisation processes with those of the Cambrian and its abundant animal fossils. Cambrian Burgess Shale-type (BST) preservation captures animals in mudstones showing a narrow range of mineralogies; yet, fossiliferous Neoproterozoic mudstones rarely share the same mineralogy. Animal fossils are absent where BST preservation occurs in deposits ≥789 Ma, suggesting a soft maximum constraint on animal antiquity.

Thus, was the genesis of one of the greatest cell biologists of the 20 th century, Joseph Grafton Gall, who died 12 September 2024, at 96. He had been professionally active up until only a few years ago. There was no one like him in the modern era of cell biology and there will not be another figure like him anytime soon.

Abstract:While a great deal of scholarly attention has been given to the publication of serialized novels in early Victorian Britain, there has been hardly any consideration of the no less widespread practice of issuing scientific works in parts and numbers. What scholarship there has been has insisted that scientific part-works operated on entirely different principles from the strategies for maintaining readerly interest that were being developed by serial novelists like Charles Dickens. Deploying the methods of book history, this essay examines the reporting of Richard Owen's celebrated paleontological reconstructions from the 1830s and 1840s in the serialized formats of the Proceedings of the Zoological Society, his own History of British Fossil Mammals, and, in particular, the Penny Cyclopaedia. It argues that Owen, along with his close friend William John Broderip, clearly recognized the affective possibilities of the serial format and that they exploited the Penny Cyclopaedia's sequential mode of publication to evoke suspense and expectation in their anonymous but collaboratively authored accounts of Owen's paleontological researches.

Abstract:Biomineralization is remarkably diverse and provides myriad functions across many organismal systems. Biomineralization processes typically produce hardened, hierarchically organized structures usually having nanostructured mineral assemblies that are formed through inorganic-organic (usually protein) interactions. Calcium‑carbonate biomineral predominates in structures of small invertebrate organisms abundant in marine environments, particularly in shells (remarkably it is also found in the inner ear otoconia of vertebrates), whereas calcium-phosphate biomineral predominates in the skeletons and dentitions of both marine and terrestrial vertebrates, including humans. Reconciliation of the interplay between organic moieties and inorganic crystals in bones and teeth is a cornerstone of biomineralization research. Key molecular determinants of skeletal and dental mineralization have been identified in health and disease, and in pathologic ectopic calcification, ranging from small molecules such as pyrophosphate, to small membrane-bounded matrix vesicles shed from cells, and to noncollagenous extracellular matrix proteins such as osteopontin and their derived bioactive peptides. Beyond partly knowing the regulatory role of the direct actions of inhibitors on vertebrate mineralization, more recently the importance of their enzymatic removal from the extracellular matrix has become increasingly understood. Great progress has been made in deciphering the relationship between mineralization inhibitors and the enzymes that degrade them, and how adverse changes in this physiologic pathway (such as gene mutations causing disease) result in mineralization defects. Two examples of this are rare skeletal diseases having osteomalacia/odontomalacia (soft bones and teeth) - namely hypophosphatasia (HPP) and X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) - where inactivating mutations occur in the gene for the enzymes tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP, TNSALP, ALPL) and phosphate-regulating endopeptidase homolog X-linked (PHEX), respectively. Here, we review and provide a concept for how existing and new information now comes together to describe the dual nature of regulation of mineralization - through systemic mineral ion homeostasis involving circulating factors, coupled with molecular determinants operating at the local level in the extracellular matrix. For the local mineralization events in the extracellular matrix, we present a focused concept in skeletal mineralization biology called the Stenciling Principle - a principle (building upon seminal work by Neuman and Fleisch) describing how the action of enzymes to remove tissue-resident inhibitors defines with precision the location and progression of mineralization.
