Abstract:ABSTRACT The most striking feature of monotremes is that they are egg-laying mammals, but this was only accepted by the scientific establishment eight decades after specimens of echidna and platypus were first examined in Europe. Even before the specimens were sent, colonists had been told by Indigenous Australians that the echidna and platypus laid eggs. In this paper I briefly summarise aspects of the significance of monotremes in some mainland Aboriginal cultures, and the attempts by the naturalist George Bennett to discover if platypuses were oviparous. In Tasmania the disruption of Aboriginal culture early in the 19th century meant that there are very few details known of their insights into ecosystems and monotreme biology. Some incidental information was recorded by George Augustus Robinson during his “Friendly Mission”, while what appears to be a previously unremarked presentation at the Royal Society of Van Diemen’s Land in 1849 reveals Aboriginal knowledge of the reproductive behaviour and life history of Tasmanian echidnas not described in the scientific literature until very recently.
A diverse assemblage of monotremes (Monotremata) from the Cenomanian Lightning Ridge fauna of New South Wales, Australia

Abstract:Six species of monotremes, three newly described here, occur in the Cenomanian fossil fauna from Lightning Ridge in northeastern New South Wales, Australia, making it the most diverse monotreme assemblage on record. Four species are known from a single specimen, suggesting that diversity remains underrepresented. No other mammal lineages are known from the deposit, although the absence of smaller taxa is likely due to sampling biases introduced by the opal mining process. Early-Late Cretaceous monotremes thus clearly diversified in Australia during the absence of other large-bodied mammalian competitors; and subsequently occupied a wider range of ecological niches than at any other time in their evolutionary history. One new taxon described herein represents a previously unknown monotreme family that combines marked elongation and torsion of the dentary with teinolophid character states, including the retention of five molars. Another shares dental features with ornithorhynchids, while the third is a possible diminutive steropodontid and simultaneously represents the smallest-bodied post-Barremian monotreme. Additional material of Steropodon galmani is also documented, confirming that a Meckelian groove is rudimentary or absent in this taxon, thus adding to the morphological understanding of this unusual monotreme. Lastly, we posit that the loss of teeth in ornithorhynchids may have occurred during the Pleistocene as a result of competition with aquatic hydromyin rodents dispersing to Australia from New Guinea. Abstract:Abstract Egg-laying mammals (monotremes) are the only extant mammalian outgroup to therians (marsupial and eutherian animals) and provide key insights into mammalian evolution 1,2 . Here we generate and analyse reference genomes of the platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus ) and echidna ( Tachyglossus aculeatus ), which represent the only two extant monotreme lineages. The nearly complete platypus genome assembly has anchored almost the entire genome onto chromosomes, markedly improving the genome continuity and gene annotation. Together with our echidna sequence, the genomes of the two species allow us to detect the ancestral and lineage-specific genomic changes that shape both monotreme and mammalian evolution. We provide evidence that the monotreme sex chromosome complex originated from an ancestral chromosome ring configuration. The formation of such a unique chromosome complex may have been facilitated by the unusually extensive interactions between the multi-X and multi-Y chromosomes that are shared by the autosomal homologues in humans. Further comparative genomic analyses unravel marked differences between monotremes and therians in haptoglobin genes, lactation genes and chemosensory receptor genes for smell and taste that underlie the ecological adaptation of monotremes.

Evolution of Placentation in Eugongylini (Squamata: Scincidae): Ontogeny of Extraembryonic Membranes in Oviparous and Viviparous Species of New Zealand

Abstract:Development of the yolk sac of the only oviparous New Zealand skink, Oligosoma suteri, results in an elaborate structure previously known only in Oligosoma lichenigerum of Lord Howe Island, supporting a close relationship between these two taxa. Placental development of Oligosoma polychroma is identical to, yet independently derived from, that of viviparous species of Australia, supporting a hypothesis that selection favors regional differentiation of the maternal–embryonic interface and that the omphaloplacenta is an adaptation for histotrophic transport. New Zealand scincid lizards, genus Oligosoma, represent a monophyletic radiation of a clade, Eugongylini, of species distributed geographically throughout the South Pacific with major radiations in Australia and New Caledonia. Viviparity has evolved independently on multiple occasions within these lineages. Studies of Australian species have revealed that placental specializations resulting in substantial placentotrophy have evolved in two lineages. The pattern of extraembryonic membrane development of oviparous species differs from viviparous species and identical placental architecture has evolved in both placentotrophic lineages. We analyzed extraembryonic membrane development in two New Zealand species, the sole oviparous species, Oligosoma suteri, and placental development of a representative viviparous species, Oligosoma polychroma, using histological techniques. We conclude that these two species share a basic pattern of extraembryonic membrane development with other squamates. Comparisons with Australian species indicate that morphogenesis of the yolk sac of O. suteri results in an elaborate structure previously known only in Oligosoma lichenigerum with a geographic distribution on Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. This finding supports a close relationship between these two taxa. We conclude also that the pattern of placental development of O. polychroma is identical to that of viviparous species of Australia. The terminal placental stage for each of these lineages includes a chorioallantoic placenta and an elaborate omphaloplacenta. This level of homoplasy in placental evolution is consistent with a hypothesis that selection favors regional differentiation of the maternal–embryonic interface and that the omphaloplacenta is an adaptation for histotrophic transport.

A synthetic review: natural history of amniote reproductive modes in light of comparative evolutionary genomics

Abstract:There is a current lack of consensus on whether the ancestral parity mode was oviparity (egg‐laying) or viviparity (live‐birth) in amniotes and particularly in squamates (snakes, lizards, and amphisbaenids). How transitions between parity modes occur at the genomic level has primary importance for how science conceptualises the origin of amniotes, and highly variable parity modes in Squamata. Synthesising literature from medicine, poultry science, reproductive biology, and evolutionary biology, I review the genomics and physiology of five broad processes (here termed the 'Main Five') expected to change during transitions between parity modes: eggshell formation, embryonic retention, placentation, calcium transport, and maternal–fetal immune dynamics. Throughout, I offer alternative perspectives and testable hypotheses regarding proximate causes of parity mode evolution in amniotes and squamates. If viviparity did evolve early in the history of lepidosaurs, I offer the nucleation site hypothesis as a proximate explanation. The framework of this hypothesis can be extended to amniotes to infer their ancestral state. I also provide a mechanism and hypothesis on how squamates may transition from viviparity to oviparity and make predictions about the directionality of transitions in three species. After considering evidence for differing perspectives on amniote origins, I offer a framework that unifies (i) the extended embryonic retention model and (ii) the traditional model which describes the amniote egg as an adaptation to the terrestrial environment. Additionally, this review contextualises the origin of amniotes and parity mode evolution within Medawar's paradigm. Medawar posited that pregnancy could be supported by immunosuppression, inertness, evasion, or immunological barriers. I demonstrate that this does not support gestation or gravidity across most amniotes but may be an adequate paradigm to explain how the first amniote tolerated internal fertilization and delayed egg deposition. In this context, the eggshell can be thought of as an immunological barrier. If serving as a barrier underpins the origin of the amniote eggshell, there should be evidence that oviparous gravidity can be met with a lack of immunological responses in utero. Rare examples of two species that differentially express very few genes during gravidity, suggestive of an absent immunological reaction to oviparous gravidity, are two skinks Lampropholis guichenoti and Lerista bougainvillii. These species may serve as good models for the original amniote egg. Overall, this review grounds itself in the historical literature while offering a modern perspective on the origin of amniotes. I encourage the scientific community to utilise this review as a resource in evolutionary and comparative genomics studies, embrace the complexity of the system, and thoughtfully consider the frameworks proposed.

Abstract:The Langevin theory of the polarization of a dilute collection of dipoles by an external field is often included in introductory solid state physics and physical chemistry curricula. The average polarization is calculated assuming the dipoles are in thermal equilibrium with a heat bath. The heart of the polarization calculation is a derivation of the average dipole-field projection, whose dependence on the external field is given by the Langevin function. The Langevin problem is revisited, here, and the average projection of any given dipole onto any other dipole from the collection is derived in terms of the Langevin function. A simple expression is obtained for the underlying dipole-dipole angular distribution function.

Common lizards break Dollo’s law of irreversibility: genome-wide phylogenomics support a single origin of viviparity and re-evolution of oviparity

Abstract:Abstract Dollo’s law of irreversibility states that once a complex trait has been lost in evolution, it cannot be regained. It is thought that complex epistatic interactions and developmental constraints impede the re-emergence of such a trait. Oviparous reproduction (egg-laying) requires the formation of an eggshell and represents an example of such a complex trait. In reptiles, viviparity (live-bearing) has evolved repeatedly but it is highly disputed if oviparity has re-evolved. Here, using up to 194,358 SNP loci and 1,334,760 bp of sequence, we reconstruct the phylogeny of viviparous and oviparous lineages of common lizards and infer the evolutionary history of parity modes. Our phylogeny strongly supports six main common lizard lineages that have been previously identified. We find very high statistical support for a topological arrangement that suggests a reversal to oviparity from viviparity. Our topology is consistent with highly differentiated chromosomal configurations between lineages, but disagrees with previous phylogenetic studies in some nodes. While we find high support for a reversal to oviparity, more genomic and developmental data are needed to robustly test this and assess the mechanism by which a reversal might have occurred.
Paleontology in parts: Richard Owen, William John Broderip, and the serialization of science in early Victorian Britain

Abstract:While a great deal of scholarly attention has been given to the publication of serialized novels in early Victorian Britain, there has been hardly any consideration of the no less widespread practice of issuing scientific works in parts and numbers. What scholarship there has been has insisted that scientific part-works operated on entirely different principles from the strategies for maintaining readerly interest that were being developed by serial novelists like Charles Dickens. Deploying the methods of book history, this essay examines the reporting of Richard Owen's celebrated paleontological reconstructions from the 1830s and 1840s in the serialized formats of the Proceedings of the Zoological Society, his own History of British Fossil Mammals, and, in particular, the Penny Cyclopaedia. It argues that Owen, along with his close friend William John Broderip, clearly recognized the affective possibilities of the serial format and that they exploited the Penny Cyclopaedia's sequential mode of publication to evoke suspense and expectation in their anonymous but collaboratively authored accounts of Owen's paleontological researches.

Abstract:The presence of Dromornithidae in the Australian Cenozoic fossil record was first reported in 1872, yet although eight species and hundreds of specimens are known, key information on their morphology remains elusive. This is especially so for their skulls, which contributes to a lack of resolution regarding their relationships within Galloanserae. The skull of the Pleistocene dromornithid, Genyornis newtoni , was initially described in 1913. Additional fossils of this species have since been discovered and understanding of avian skull osteology, arthrology, and myological correlates has greatly advanced. Here we present a complete redescription of the skull of Genyornis newtoni , updating knowledge on its morphology, soft-tissue correlates, and palaeobiology. We explore the diversity within Dromornithidae and make comprehensive comparisons to fossil and extant galloanserans. Furthermore, we expand on the homologies of skull muscles, especially regarding the jaw adductors and address the conflicting and unstable placement of dromornithids within Galloanserae. Findings support generic distinction of Genyornis newtoni , and do not support the close association of Dromornithidae and Gastornithidae. We thus recommend removal of the dromornithids from the Gastornithiformes. Considering character polarities, the results of our phylogenetic analyses, and palaeogeography, our findings instead support the alternative hypotheses, of dromornithids within, or close to, the Suborder Anhimae with Anseriformes.

Abstract:The sex chromosomes of egg-laying mammals (monotremes), which lack the sex determining gene SRY [1][1], evolved independently to those of all therian mammals[2][2],[3][3]. Here we characterise the candidate monotreme sex determining gene, the Y-localised anti-Müllerian hormone gene ( AMHY )[4][4],[3][3] and trace its expression during the period of sexual differentiation. Monotreme AMHX and AMHY gametologues have significant sequence divergence at the promoter, gene and protein level, likely following an original allele inversion in the common monotreme ancestor but retain conserved features of TGF-β molecules. Expression of sexual differentiation genes in the echidna fetal gonad were significantly different from that of therian mammals. AMHY expression was seen exclusively in the male gonad during sexual differentiation, whereas AMHX was expressed in both sexes. Experimental ectopic expression of platypus AMHX or AMHY in the chicken embryo did not masculinise the female urogenital system, a possible result of mammalian specific changes to AMH proteins preventing function in the chicken. Our results provide fundamental insight into the first steps of monotreme sex chromosome evolution and sex determination with developmental expression data strongly supporting AMHY as the primary male sex determination gene. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. Abstract:Viviparous (live-bearing) vertebrates have evolved repeatedly within otherwise oviparous (egg-laying) clades. Over two-thirds of these changes in vertebrate reproductive parity mode happened in squamate reptiles, where the transition has happened between 98 and 129 times. The transition from oviparity to viviparity requires numerous physiological, morphological, and immunological changes to the female reproductive tract, including eggshell reduction, delayed oviposition, placental development for supply of water and nutrition to the embryo by the mother, enhanced gas exchange, and suppression of maternal immune rejection of the embryo. We performed genomic and transcriptomic analyses of a closely related oviparous-viviparous pair of lizards (Phrynocephalus przewalskii and Phrynocephalus vlangalii) to examine these transitions. Expression patterns of maternal oviduct through reproductive development of the egg and embryo differ markedly between the two species. We found changes in expression patterns of appropriate genes that account for each of the major aspects of the oviparity to viviparity transition. In addition, we compared the gene sequences in transcriptomes of four oviparous-viviparous pairs of lizards in different genera (Phrynocephalus, Eremias, Scincella, and Sphenomorphus) to look for possible gene convergence at the sequence level. We discovered low levels of convergence in both amino acid replacement and evolutionary rate shift. This suggests that most of the changes that produce the oviparity-viviparity transition are changes in gene expression, so occasional reversals to oviparity from viviparity may not be as difficult to achieve as has been previously suggested.

Abstract:Velvet worms, or onychophorans, are animals of extraordinary importance in the study of evolution. This is the first history of their study. They were described by Lansdown Guilding (1797-1831). This paper identifies the landmarks of their study, in a worldwide level, for almost 200 years. The beginning, 1826-1879, was based on describing their anatomy with light miscroscopy, mostly by famous French naturalists such as Milne-Edwards and Blanchard. In 1880-1929 peiord, work concentrated in anatomy, physiology, behavior, biogeography and ecology, but the most important work was Bouvier`s mammoth monograph. The next period, 1930-1979, was important for the discovery of Cambrian species; Vachons explanation of how ancient distribution defined the existence of two families; Pioneer DNA and electron microscopy from Brazil; and primitive attempts at systematics using embryology or isolated anatomical characteristics. Finally, the 1980-2020 period, with research centered in Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica and Germany, is marked by an evolutionary approach to everything, from body and behavior to distribution; for the solution of the old problem of how they form their adhesive net and how the glue works; the reconstruction of Cambrian onychophoran communities, the first experimental taphonomy; the first countrywide map of conservation status (from Costa Rica); the first model of why they survive in cities; the discovery of new phenomena like food hiding, parental feeding investment and ontogenetic diet shift; and for the birth of a new research branh, Onychophoran Etnobiology, founded in 2015,

Abstract:An analysis of two mitochondrial genes (16S and COI) shows that two genera can be recognised in the Lord Howe Island tateid fauna. Fluviopupa , a widespread Pacific genus, contains the species previously referred to that genus as well as Potamopyrgus oscitans . Species which were previously included in the New Caledonian genus Hemistomia form a clade that is sister to Austropyrgus from south-eastern Australia. Abstract:Resolving the evolutionary relationships of early diverging ('basal') ornithischian dinosaurs is a challenging topic in palaeontology, with multiple competing hypotheses on the phylogenetic relationships of heterodontosaurids, 'hypsilophodontids', and other early-diverging forms. These hypotheses cannot be directly compared because they are derived from differently constructed datasets (i.e. distinct samples of taxa and characters). This study aims to address these issues by revising and combining the distinct datasets into a single analysis in order to create the most comprehensive dataset for the investigation of the phylogenetic relationships of early-diverging ornithischians. A diphyletic model of Dinosauria is supported, with silesaurs nesting as members of Ornithischia. Heterodontosauridae is resolved as a clade of non-genasaurian ornithischians, rejecting a potential relationship with Marginocephalia . 'Hypsilophodontid' taxa span the neornithischian and ornithopod stem, with Thescelosauridae as the sister taxon to Cerapoda. A more restricted Ornithopoda is composed of five main clades: Hypsilophodontidae , Rhabdodontomorpha , Elasmaria , Dryosauridae and Ankylopollexia. Hypsilophodontidae is a valid clade, reduced to two European Barremian taxa. Rhabdodontomorpha does not contain Muttaburrasaurus as originally proposed, but instead expands to include a North American clade formed by Convolosaurus , Iani and Tenontosaurus. Elasmaria contains all non-dryomorph Gondwanan ornithopods, with its members possessing multiple distinct body plans. New results and comparison with previous studies suggest that some members of Dryosauridae are not 'true dryosaurids' but various early euiguanodontians that may be more closely related to either Elasmaria or Ankylopollexia . Results group most 'hypsilophodontids' in larger clades, significantly reducing the number and extension of ghost lineages throughout all of Neornithischia . These clades also show a degree of endemism, with different lineages present at different continents in the Late Cretaceous. This new phylogenetic analysis unifying previous works will provide a framework for future studies on origins and relations of early diverging ornithischians, and attempting to find stability among the different competing hypotheses.

Abstract:The present study describes the post-hatching development of the external features of the platypus. Specimens range in age from the day of hatching through to 6 months old, and provide the first comprehensive view of the developmental sequence of these features. Various features, those specific to the platypus, those specific to monotremes and those shared with marsupials and eutherians, are described. Features specific to the platypus, including the bill and webbing of the forefeet, are seen to develop precociously. Many features show similarities to marsupials, although marsupials show differential development both in timing and in morphology. The developmental progression is related to the age, in days, although the exact age of the specimens is unclear, and relies on ages given to the specimens at the time of collection, sometimes as long as 70 years ago. Despite this, the progression of development of these features suggests that the ageing given is relatively accurate.

Abstract:In the wet-dry tropics of northern Australia, temperatures are high and stable year-round but monsoonal rainfall is highly seasonal and variable both annually and spatially. Many features of reproduction in vertebrates of this region may be adaptations to dealing with this unpredictable variation in precipitation, notably by (i) using direct proximate (rainfall-affected) cues to synchronize the timing and extent of breeding with rainfall events, (ii) placing the eggs or offspring in conditions where they will be buffered from rainfall extremes, and (iii) evolving developmental plasticity, such that the timing and trajectory of embryonic differentiation flexibly respond to local conditions. For example, organisms as diverse as snakes (Liasis fuscus, Acrochordus arafurae), crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus), birds (Anseranas semipalmata) and wallabies (Macropus agilis) show extreme annual variation in reproductive rates, linked to stochastic variation in wet season rainfall. The seasonal timing of initiation and cessation of breeding in snakes (Tropidonophis mairii) and rats (Rattus colletti) also varies among years, depending upon precipitation. An alternative adaptive route is to buffer the effects of rainfall variability on offspring by parental care (including viviparity) or by judicious selection of nest sites in oviparous taxa without parental care. A third type of adaptive response involves flexible embryonic responses (including embryonic diapause, facultative hatching and temperature-dependent sex determination) to incubation conditions, as seen in squamates, crocodilians and turtles. Such flexibility fine-tunes developmental rates and trajectories to conditions--especially, rainfall patterns--that are not predictable at the time of oviposition.
Comparative cranial morphology in living and extinct platypuses: Feeding behavior, electroreception, and loss of teeth

Abstract:The modern platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, has an eye structure similar to aquatic mammals; however, platypuses also have a "sixth sense" associated with the bill electro- and mechanoreception that they use without opening their eyes underwater. We hypothesize that Ornithorhynchus and the Miocene taxon Obdurodon have different sensory capacities, which may have resulted from differences in foraging behavior. To estimate differences in foraging, sensory systems, and anatomical divergence between these monotremes, we compared their skull morphologies. Results indicate that the bill of Obdurodon is more dorsally deflected than that of Ornithorhynchus, suggesting a pelagic foraging behavior in Obdurodon compared to the bottom-feeding behavior in Ornithorhynchus. The infraorbital foramen of Obdurodon, through which the maxillary nerve passes sensory data from the bill to the brain, is relatively less developed than that of Ornithorhynchus. Whereas bill-focused sensory perception was likely shared among Mesozoic monotremes, the highly developed electrosensory system of Ornithorhynchus may represent an adaptation to foraging in cloudy water. Computed tomography imagery indicates that the enlarged infraorbital canal of Ornithorhynchus restricts the space available for maxillary tooth roots. Hence, loss of functional teeth in Ornithorhynchus may possibly have resulted from a shift in foraging behavior and coordinate elaboration of the electroreceptive sensory system. Well-developed electroreceptivity in monotremes is known at least as far back as the early Cretaceous; however, there are differences in the extent of elaboration of the feature among members of the ornithorhynchid lineage.

Abstract:Abstract Ancient DNA is transforming our ability to reconstruct historical patterns and mechanisms shaping modern diversity and distributions. In particular, molecular data from extinct Holocene island faunas have revealed surprising biogeographic scenarios. Here, we recovered partial mitochondrial (mt) genomes for 1300–1400 year old specimens ( n = 2) of the extinct “horned” crocodile, Voay robustus , collected from Holocene deposits in southwestern Madagascar. Phylogenetic analyses of partial mt genomes and tip-dated timetrees based on molecular, fossil, and stratigraphic data favor a sister group relationship between Voay and Crocodylus (true crocodiles). These well supported trees conflict with recent morphological systematic work that has consistently placed Voay within Osteolaeminae (dwarf crocodiles and kin) and provide evidence for likely homoplasy in crocodylian cranial anatomy and snout shape. The close relationship between Voay and Crocodylus lends additional context for understanding the biogeographic origins of these genera and refines competing hypotheses for the recent extinction of Voay from Madagascar.

Abstract:Synopsis Dinosaur nesting biology has been an intriguing research topic, though dinosaur behaviors were relatively less illuminated because of the constraints of the fossil record. For instance, hatching asynchrony, where eggs in a single clutch hatch at different times, is unique to modern neoavian birds but was also suggested to be present in oviraptorid dinosaurs based on a possible partial clutch of four embryo-containing eggs from Mongolia. Unfortunately, unequivocal evidence for the origination of these eggs from a single clutch is lacking. Here we report a new, better preserved partial oviraptorid clutch with three embryo-containing eggs—a single egg (Egg I) and a pair (Egg II/III)—from the Late Cretaceous Nanxiong Group of Jiangxi Province, China. Geopetal features indicate that the pair of eggs was laid prior to the single egg. Neutron tomographic images in combination with osteological features indicate that the embryo of the single egg is less developed than those of the paired eggs. Eggshell histology suggests that the embryo-induced erosion in the paired eggs is markedly more pronounced than in the single egg, providing a new line of evidence for hatching asynchrony. The inferred hatching asynchrony in combination with previously surmised thermoregulatory incubation and communal nesting behaviors very likely suggests that oviraptorid dinosaurs presented a unique reproductive biology lacking modern analogs, which is contrary to the predominant view that their reproductive biology was intermediate between that of modern crocodiles and birds.
