Abstract:The American biologist Winslow Russel Briggs (1928–2019) was a global leader in plant physiology, genetics and photobiology. In this contribution, we try to share our knowledge of the remarkable career of this outstanding scientist. After earning his PhD at Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts), he started his independent research program at Stanford University (California). Among many major contributions was his elegant experiment that conclusively demonstrated the role of auxin transport in the phototropic bending response of grass coleoptiles. During subsequent years as Professor of biology at Harvard University, Briggs focused on phytochrome and photomorphogenesis. In 1973, he re-located to Stanford to become Director of the Department of Plant Biology, Carnegie Institution for Science, and faculty member in the Biology Department at Stanford University. After his retirement (1993), he continued his research on "light and plant development" as an emeritus at Carnegie until the day of his death on February 11, 2019. Through his long research career, Briggs stayed at the cutting edge by re-inventing himself from a plant physiologist, to biochemist, geneticist, and molecular biologist. He made numerous discoveries, including the LOV-domain photoreceptor phototropin. Winslow Briggs, who was also a naturalist and gifted pianist, inspired and promoted the work of generations of young scientists – as mentor, colleague and friend.

Abstract:Joanne Chory is the recipient of the 2024 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science for her exceptional research on elucidating the signal transduction pathways of the plant light response, and for inspiring new strategies to engineer plants for the fight against climate change. Chory received her Ph.D. in microbiology studying a phototroph, where the power of the genetic approach in bacteria impressed her. For her postdoctoral work, she turned her attention to plant sciences, and launched a genetic screen to dissect the response of the model organism plant Arabidopsis to light. The mutants that illuminated her path had a surprising response in that she isolated dark grown mutant plants that looked as if they were growing in light. The implications were tantalizing: the data suggested that the plant light response pathway was always active, but was normally repressed in the dark. She launcher her independent career at The Salk Institute, where she dissected many signaling pathways, with discoveries including that signals from the light harvesting organelles chloroplasts interplay with signals from the nucleus, that plants use steroid hormone pathways to grow and thrive—a process previously thought limited to animals, and delineating how plants adapt to shade. More recently as founding director of The Harvesting Plants Initiative at The Salk Institute, she has turned from studying how plants adapt to varying conditions of light and shade, to asking how plants can be engineered to combat climate change. She is a mentor and inspiring colleague to many, and her efforts to combat climate change have encouraged many other plant scientists to develop innovative approaches to this important program. For these many vital contributions, Joanne Chory is recognized as a pivotal leader in the study of plant light signaling and inspiring the development of solutions to climate change with the awarding of the 2024 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science.

Abstract:Biology has just lost one of its greatest thinkers. An intellectual pioneer and exceptional observer of animals, de Waal inspired us all to think differently about animals as well as ourselves - his far-reaching impact within and beyond biology and psychology cannot be overstated. He was especially known for his ground-breaking work investigating the social minds of our two closest great ape cousins, the chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (P. paniscus), well as other primates. He leaves behind him a rich and varied legacy of research that continues to inspire and push the field forward.

Abstract:The dynamic and efficient coordination of primary photosynthetic reactions with leaf energization and metabolism under a wide range of environmental conditions is a fundamental property of plants involving processes at all functional levels. The present historical perspective covers 60 years of research aiming to understand the underlying mechanisms, linking major breakthroughs to current progress. It centers on the contributions of Ulrich Heber who had pioneered novel concepts, fundamental methods, and mechanistic understanding of photosynthesis. An important first step was the development of non-aqueous preparation of chloroplasts allowing the investigation of chloroplast metabolites ex vivo (meaning that the obtained results reflect the in vivo situation). Later on, intact chloroplasts, retaining their functional envelope membranes, were isolated in aqueous media to investigate compartmentation and exchange of metabolites between chloroplasts and external medium. These studies elucidated metabolic interaction between chloroplasts and cytoplasm during photosynthesis. Experiments with isolated intact chloroplasts clarified that oxygenation of ribulose-1.5-bisphosphate generates glycolate in photorespiration. The development of non-invasive optical methods enabled researchers identifying mechanisms that balance electron flow in the photosynthetic electron transport system avoiding its over-reduction. Recording chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence allowed one to monitor, among other parameters, thermal energy dissipation by means of 'nonphotochemical quenching' of the excited state of Chl a. Furthermore, studies both in vivo and in vitro led to basic understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of freezing damage and frost tolerance of plant leaves, to SO2 tolerance of tree leaves and dehydrating lichens and mosses.

As roots encounter very diverse conditions while exploring the soil for resources, their growth and development must be responsive to changes in the rhizosphere, resulting in root architectures that are tailor-made for all prevailing circumstances. Using multi-disciplinary approaches, we are gaining more intricate insights into the regulatory mechanisms directing root system architecture. This Special Issue provides insights into our advancement of knowledge on different aspects of root development and identifies opportunities for future research.

Abstract:David Lewis (), who died last year at the age of 85, regularly attended paper-reading meetings of the BBS, and its annual general meetings, from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was a frequent speaker on bryophyte biochemistry. His studies of soluble carbohydrates and lignin in bryophytes were groundbreaking, drawing on his considerable chemical and technical expertise, although he happily admitted his reliance on BBS members for the identification and collection of source materials.

Abstract:Forty years ago, Horace Judson's The Eighth Day of Creation was published, a book vividly recounting the foundations of modern biology, the molecular biology revolution. This book inspired many in my generation. The anniversary provides a chance for a new generation to take a look back, to see how science has and hasn't changed. Many central players in the book, including Sydney Brenner, Seymour Benzer, and François Jacob, would go on to be among the founders of modern cell biology, developmental biology, and neurobiology. These players come alive via their own words, as complex individuals, both heroes and anti-heroes. The technologies and experimental approaches they pioneered, ranging from cell fractionation to immunoprecipitation to structural biology, and the multidisciplinary approaches they took continue to power and inspire our work today. In the process, Judson brings out of the shadows the central roles played by women in many of the era's discoveries. He provides us with a vision of how science and scientists have changed, of how many things about our endeavor never change, and of how some new ideas are perhaps not as new as we would like to think.

Abstract:The human nervous system maintains dominion over everything experienced in life, consolidating a constant barrage of stimuli and chemical fluctuation into memory, sense, emotion, and even character. Despite decades of productive investigation, comprehension of the nervous system's function and structure remain shrouded in mystery. Historically, the burden of elucidating these mysteries has fallen to neuroscientists bold enough to seek answers to this most nebulous vista. The legacy of one such neuroscientist, Jerzy Edwin Rose, endures today as a pillar of neuroscientific discovery. In the nascence of his career, Rose explored volumetric comparisons of human brain structure to that of other mammals, leading to the development of novel methods in neurophysiologic measurement and explanation. Rose would later segue mid-career into studies on the cooperation between the auditory cortex and thalamus, resulting in increased understanding of its functioning, structure, and anatomy. During the final saga of his long, fruitful career, Rose explored the electrophysiology of the auditory system, leading to novel methods using modern technology. Ultimately, the vast breadth of Rose's contributions to neuroscience has diminished the field's mystery, setting forth momentous groundwork for future discovery, and the inspiration to carry on in the spirit of his bold curiosity.

Abstract:Dr. Deepak "Dee" Pandya spent his career as an internal medicine physician as well as in his respective laboratories at the Bedford, Massachusetts Veterans Administration Hospital and at Boston University School of Medicine. His achievements mapping out the cytoarchitecture and connectivity of areas all over the nonhuman primate brain and small mammals are unparalleled. Dee made numerous discoveries and created painstakingly detailed reports, which impacted the field of neuroanatomy and expanded our perceptions of the many diverse inputs and suggestive functions of specific brain regions. The "old school" methods employed from microscopic work to detailed analyses yielded a product that was accurate and exciting all at the same time. We will all miss Dee's smile and tender manner, but more so, we will miss his wonderful and patient mentorship during the precious time we all spent with him. His mentorship resulted in all of his trainees becoming better scientists and left us with the understanding that people like Dee only come by once in a lifetime. In this tribute article for this special issue in the Journal of Comparative Neurology (JCN), the authors describe some of the tedious methods that were used to present our work as a way to provide insight into the extraordinary time and effort it took to produce and publish our articles with Dee in JCN. Dee's work with his colleagues set the stage for more modern methods of counting and mapping neuronal populations presented here, paving the way for such technologies as artificial intelligence and light sheet imaging to advance the field forward to reach new and exciting discoveries.

Abstract:Claudio Moser, a renowned researcher and Head of the Plant Biology and Physiology Unit at Edmund Mach Foundation in San Michele all'Adige (Trento-Italy), passed away on 17 February 2024 at the age of 55. Claudio was a dedicated and passionate plant scientist with extensive knowledge of plant biochemistry and biology. He was a pioneer in molecular physiology and biotechnology, particularly as they applied to grapevine ( Vitis spp.). His enthusiasm for his work, combined with his exceptional ability to maintain an overview and balance within his research group, allowed him to connect people at the right time, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment. This talent was instrumental in establishing numerous partnerships within the grapevine research community, which has been deeply affected by his untimely death due to an uncontrollable illness. The many heartfelt condolences received are a testament to the impact of his loss. Throughout his career, Claudio demonstrated not only his brilliance as a scientist but also his warmth and reliability as a colleague and friend. His gentle demeanour, patience, and unwavering support made every interaction with him a pleasure. His extensive body of work includes numerous scientific papers (ISI-WEB Researcher ID: B-4686-2010) and presentations at national and international conferences. He supervised or co-supervised approximately 20 theses, mentoring the next generation of scientists.

Abstract:Harry Smith was a botanist with a driving passion to understand how plant growth, development and responses to the environment are regulated. He was a true experimentalist with a restless mind, a determination to question and the commitment to follow through. Harry valued achievement over background, and his research combined biochemical, molecular and physiological approaches aimed at understanding the behaviour of plants in the real world. This led him to a series of classical experiments, begun at the University of Nottingham and continued at the University of Leicester, studying how plants detect proximity and shading by other plants. This work transformed our understanding of the role of the red/far-red light-absorbing phytochrome pigments in the perception of and response to vegetative shading. Harry defined the mechanism of the shade avoidance syndrome, and this work, taught to students worldwide, is of fundamental importance in understanding plant behaviour in the natural environment and agriculture. Harry was a truly inspirational teacher, research leader and head of department, and also a visionary founder and editor of successful journals such as Plant, Cell and Environment , Molecular Ecology and Global Change Biology , as well as being a veteran gardener, tree planter, artist and car lover.

Abstract:Plants have evolved various belowground traits to adapt to the changing environments, and root-associated soil microbes play a crucial role in the response, adaptation, and resilience to adverse environmental conditions. This comprehensive review explores the diverse interactions between plants and soil microbes, focusing on the role of root-associated microbiota, with a particular emphasis on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, in plant responses to diverse environmental conditions. How plant genotype, root traits, and growth environments influence these interactions, and consequently plant resilience and productivity, are discussed. Recent advances in root phenotyping, including traditional and machine learning-based methods are also presented as an innovative tool to study and characterize root-microbe interactions. Overall, these studies highlight the importance of considering the hidden side of the interactions between roots and microbes to improve plant nutrition and protection in the context of sustainable agriculture in the face of climate change.

Abstract:Editorial Super-resolution microscopy illuminated the hazy molecular world like a beacon, bringing significant changes to the fields of biology, optics and chemistry. Eric Betzig, who shared the 2014 Nobel Prize of Chemistry with Stefan Hell and William Moerner, is one of the inventors of this fantastic scientific tool. Working originally on near field optics, Dr. Betzig made a series of stunning achievements at Bell Labs before turning 35. Yet he quit, seemingly at the top of his game, to become a hands-on dad and joined the machinery business. Eventually, he missed science so much that he made a comeback and wowed everyone instantly with his work. He defies the conventional definition of “persistence” by demonstrating an alternative route to success. Plain-speaking and earnest, Dr. Betzig is sometimes honest to almost a fault, and always believes in doing practical things. He puts his heart and soul into everything he does, because he says he wants to truly live rather than simply pass through life. In science work, he is meticulous, yet he embraces risks and believes they can bring the best out of oneself. In life, he is a loving father who is always ready to take time from his busy research work to take his children to school or tennis lessons, and a caring teacher who never forgets to command the hard work of his postdocs.
