Abstract:It is well established that lattice artifacts can be suppressed substantially by the use of SU(3)-projected smeared links in the fermion action. An example is the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action where the ASQ-like effective links are constructed from reunitarized Fat7 links. A general procedure is presented for computing the derivative of the fermion action with respect to the base links (fermion force) - a key component in dynamical simulations using molecular dynamics evolution. The method is iterative and can be applied to actions with arbitrary levels of smearing and reunitarization. The cost of calculating the fermion force is determined for the ASQ action and the HISQ action. Test results show that calculating the HISQ force is about two times more expensive than the ASQ force.

We here focus on the rescaled bare coupling, , and the determination of which is currently only known to 1-loop order of perturbation theory. We derive suitable improvement conditions in the chiral limit and in a finite space-time volume and evaluate these for different gluonic observables, both with and without the gradient flow. The choice of β -values and the line of constant physics are motivated by the ALPHA collaboration's decoupling strategy to determine α s ( m Z ) [1]. However, the improvement conditions and some insight into systematic effects may prove useful in other contexts, too.

First dynamical simulations with minimally doubled fermions

Abstract:For thermodynamics studies it is desirable to simulate two degenerate flavors and retain at least a remnant of the chiral symmetry. Staggered fermions can achieve this at the cost of rooting the determinant. Rooting can be avoided using minimally doubled fermions. This discretization describes two degenerate quark flavors while explicitly breaking hyper-cubic symmetry, thus, requiring additional counter-terms. We use one particular formulation of minimally doubled fermions called the Kirsten-Wilczek action and mitigate lattice artifacts by improving the spatial derivatives in the Dirac operator. In this pilot study we determine the counter-terms non-perturbatively to facilitate proper dynamical simulations.

Abstract:We present an analysis of hadronic spectroscopy for Wilson valence quarks with dynamical staggered fermions at lattice coupling $6/g^2 = \beta=5.6$ at sea quark mass $am_q=0.01$ and 0.025, and of Wilson valence quarks in quenched approximation at $\beta=5.85$ and 5.95, both on $16^3 \times 32$ lattices. We make comparisons with our previous results with dynamical staggered fermions at the same parameter values but on $16^4$ lattices doubled in the temporal direction.

Towards charm physics with stabilised Wilson fermions

Abstract:We report on a first study towards the use of stabilised Wilson fermions in heavy flavour physics. In particular, we are interested in fixing the charm quark mass via various physical observables and to inspect cut-off effects arising from different choices. This is done on large-volume OpenLat ensembles with periodic boundary conditions. Two different ways of fixing the charm quark mass are explored, namely using the mass of the $D$- and $\eta_{\rm c}$-meson as physical inputs. We furthermore give an update on our determination of the non-singlet axial current improvement coefficient $c_{\rm A}$.

Abstract:The ALPHA collaboration has determined the O(a) improved Wilson quark action for lattice spacings $a\leq 0.1$ fm, in the quenched approximation. We extend this result to coarser lattices, $a\leq 0.17$ fm, and calculate the hadron spectrum on them. The large range of lattice spacings obtained by combining our results with earlier ones on finer lattices, allow us to present a convincing demonstration of the efficiency of non-perturbative O(a) improvement. We find that scaling violations of the hadron masses studied drop from 30-40% for the unimproved Wilson action on the coarsest lattice to only 2-3%.

Abstract:We extend tests of "Naik" and "fat link" improvements of the Kogut-Susskind quark action to full QCD simulations, and verify that the improvements previously demonstrated in the quenched approximation apply also to dynamical quark simulations. We extend the study of flavor symmetry improvement to the complete set of pions, and find that the nonlocal pions are significantly heavier than the local non-Goldstone pion. These results can be used to estimate the lattice spacing necessary for realistic simulations with this action.

Quantum Algorithms for Simulating Nuclear Effective Field Theories

Abstract:Quantum computers offer the potential to simulate nuclear processes that are classically intractable. With the goal of understanding the necessary quantum resources, we employ state-of-the-art Hamiltonian-simulation methods, and conduct a thorough algorithmic analysis, to estimate the qubit and gate costs to simulate low-energy effective field theories (EFTs) of nuclear physics. In particular, within the framework of nuclear lattice EFT, we obtain simulation costs for the leading-order pionless and pionful EFTs. We consider both static pions represented by a one-pion-exchange potential between the nucleons, and dynamical pions represented by relativistic bosonic fields coupled to non-relativistic nucleons. We examine the resource costs for the tasks of time evolution and energy estimation for physically relevant scales. We account for model errors associated with truncating either long-range interactions in the one-pion-exchange EFT or the pionic Hilbert space in the dynamical-pion EFT, and for algorithmic errors associated with product-formula approximations and quantum phase estimation. Our results show that the pionless EFT is the least costly to simulate and the dynamical-pion theory is the costliest. We demonstrate how symmetries of the low-energy nuclear Hamiltonians can be utilized to obtain tighter error bounds on the simulation algorithm. By retaining the locality of nucleonic interactions when mapped to qubits, we achieve reduced circuit depth and substantial parallelization. We further develop new methods to bound the algorithmic error for classes of fermionic Hamiltonians that preserve the number of fermions, and demonstrate that reasonably tight Trotter error bounds can be achieved by explicitly computing nested commutators of Hamiltonian terms. This work highlights the importance of combining physics insights and algorithmic advancement in reducing quantum-simulation costs.

Abstract:Nonzero chemical potential studies with Wilson fermions should avoid the proliferation of flavor-equivalent nucleon states encountered with staggered formulation of fermions. However, conventional wisdom has been that finite baryon density calculations with Wilson fermions will be prohibitively expensive. We demonstrate that the volume method applied to Wilson fermions gives surprisingly stable results on a small number of configurations. It is pointed out that this method may be applied to any local or nonlocal gauge invariant quantity. Some illustrative results for $<\overline{\psi}\psi>$ and $< J >$ at various values of $\mu$ in a quenched lattice simulation are given.

Abstract:We derive the asymptotic lattice spacing dependence $a^n[2b_0\bar{g}^2(1/a)]^{\hat{\Gamma}_i}$ relevant for spectral quantities of lattice QCD, when using Wilson, O$(a)$ improved Wilson or Ginsparg-Wilson quarks. We give some examples for the spectra encountered for $\hat{\Gamma}_i$ including the partially quenched case, mixed actions and using two different discretisations for dynamical quarks. This also includes maximally twisted mass QCD relying on automatic O$(a)$ improvement. At O$(a^2)$, all cases considered have $\min_i\hat{\Gamma}_i\gtrsim -0.3$ if $N_\mathrm{f}\leq 4$, which ensures that the leading order lattice artifacts are not severely logarithmically enhanced in contrast to the O$(3)$ non-linear sigma model [1,2]. However, we find a very dense spectrum of these leading powers, which may result in major pile-ups and cancellations. We present in detail the computational strategy employed to obtain the 1-loop anomalous dimensions already used in [3].

Abstract:We describe recent results concerning the behavior of lattice QCD with light dynamical Wilson and Staggered quarks. We show that it is possible to reach regions of parameter space with light pions mπ ≈ 0.2/a using Wilson fermions. If the Hybrid Molecular Dynamics (HMD) algorithm is used with the same parameters it gives incorrect results. We also present preliminary results using a higher-order integration scheme.

Abstract:We developed a Hamiltonian inspired by ASQTAD and highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) actions and show how these Hamiltonians can be used for quantum simulations. Gate costs for the time evolution of these improved Hamiltonians are provided as well as a demonstration of the reduction of lattice spacing errors using the 1+1d lattice Schwinger model.

Abstract:We describe recent results obtained as part of the High Energy Monte Carlo Grand Challenge (HEMCGC) project concerning the behaviour of lattice QCD with light dynamical Wilson quarks. We show that it is possible to reach regions of parameter space with light pions $m_\pi\ll0.2/a$, but that the equilibration time for such a system is at least of the order of 1,000 unit-length Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) trajectories (about a Gigaflop/sec-year). If the Hybrid Molecular Dynamics (HMD) algorithm is used with the same parameters it gives incorrect results.

Abstract:We present a first scaling test of twisted mass QCD with pure Wilson quarks for a twisting angle of pi/2. We have computed the vector meson mass and the pseudoscalar decay constant for different values of beta at fixed value of r_0 m_PS. The results obtained in the quenched approximation are compared with data for pure Wilson and non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson computations. We show that our results from Wilson twisted mass QCD show clearly reduced lattice spacing errors, consistent with O(a) improvement and without the need of any improvement terms added. These results thus provide numerical evidence of the prediction in ref. [1].

Abstract:Reference <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1904.03196" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1904.03196">arXiv:1904.03196</a> recently introduced an algorithm (QPS) for simulating parton showers with intermediate flavor states using polynomial resources on a digital quantum computer. We make use of a new quantum hardware capability called dynamical quantum computing to improve the scaling of this algorithm to significantly improve the method precision. In particular, we modify the quantum parton shower circuit to incorporate mid-circuit qubit measurements, resets, and quantum operations conditioned on classical information. This reduces the computational depth from $\mathcal{O}(N^5\log_2(N)^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N^3\log_2(N)^2)$ and the qubit requirements are reduced from $\mathcal{O}(N\log_2(N))$ to $\mathcal{O}(N)$. Using "matrix product state" statevector simulators, we demonstrate that the improved algorithm yields expected results for 2, 3, 4, and 5-steps of the algorithm. We compare absolute costs with the original QPS algorithm, and show that dynamical quantum computing can significantly reduce costs in the class of digital quantum algorithms representing quantum walks (which includes the QPS).
