Abstract:We determine the masses of the light and the strange quarks in the MS-bar-scheme using our high-statistics lattice simulation of QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions. For each of our three sea quarks we have analyzed our data at five different values of the valence quark mass, enabling us to parameterize our fit results in the (sea-quark mass, valence quark mass) plane. For the light quark mass we find m_light(2 GeV) = 2.7(2) MeV, which is lower than in quenched simulations. Applying a new method, which we propose to extract the strange quark mass in a sea of two dynamical light quarks, we obtain m_strange(2 GeV) = 140(20) MeV.

Abstract:We present estimates of the masses of light quarks using lattice data. Our main results are based on a global analysis of all the published data for Wilson, Sheikholeslami-Wohlert (clover), and staggered fermions, both in the quenched approximation and with $n_f=2$ dynamical flavors. We find that the values of masses with the various formulations agree after extrapolation to the continuum limit for the $n_f=0$ theory. Our best estimates, in the MSbar scheme at $\mu=2 GeV$, are $\mbar=3.4 +- 0.4 +- 0.3 MeV$ and $m_s = 100 +- 21 +- 10 MeV$ in the quenched approximation. The $n_f=2$ results, $\mbar = 2.7 +- 0.3 +- 0.3 MeV$ and $m_s = 68 +- 12 +- 7 MeV$, are preliminary. (A linear extrapolation in $n_f$ would further reduce these estimates for the physical case of three dynamical flavors.) These estimates are smaller than phenomenological estimates based on sum rules, but maintain the ratios predicted by chiral perturbation theory. The new results have a significant impact on the extraction of $\epsilon'/\epsilon$ from the Standard Model. Using the same lattice data we estimate the quark condensate using the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation. Again the three formulations give consistent results after extrapolation to $a=0$, and the value turns out to be correspondingly larger, roughly preserving $m_s \vev{\bar \psi \psi}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we reanalyze the I = 0 scalar channel with the improved Monte-Carlo-based QCD sum rules, which combines the rigorous Holder-inequality-determined sum rule window and a parametrization with two-Breit-Wigner-type resonances for the phenomenological spectral density that satisfies the low-energy theorem for the scalar form factor. Considering the uncertainties of the QCD parameters and the experimental masses and widths of the scalar resonances sigma and f(0)(980), we obtain a prediction for light quark mass m(q) (2 GeV) = 1/2 (m(u)(2 GeV) + m(d)(2 GeV)) = 4.7(-0.7)(+0.8) MeV, which is consistent with the Particle Data Group value and QCD sum rule determinations in the pseudoscalar channel. This agreement provides a consistent framework connecting QCD sum rules and low-energy hadronic physics. We also obtain the decay constants of sigma and f(0)(980) at 2 GeV, which are approximately 0.64-0.83 and 0.40-0.48 GeV, respectively.

Abstract:We describe recent results obtained as part of the High Energy Monte Carlo Grand Challenge (HEMCGC) project concerning the behaviour of lattice QCD with light dynamical Wilson quarks. We show that it is possible to reach regions of parameter space with light pions $m_\pi\ll0.2/a$, but that the equilibration time for such a system is at least of the order of 1,000 unit-length Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) trajectories (about a Gigaflop/sec-year). If the Hybrid Molecular Dynamics (HMD) algorithm is used with the same parameters it gives incorrect results.

Abstract:We compute the light hadron mass spectrum at beta=5.7 using the O(a) improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert (SW) fermion action with two choices of the clover coefficient: the classical value, c=1, and a mean-field or tadpole-improved estimate c=1.57. We compare our results with those of the GF11 Collaboration who use the Wilson fermion action (c=0). We find that changing c from zero to 1 and 1.57 leads to significant differences in the masses of the chirally extrapolated and strange pseudoscalar and vector mesons, the nucleon, the Delta, and also in the Edinburgh plot. A number of other quantities, for example m_V^2-m_PS^2, J, am_K/am_\rho and am_{K^*}/am_\rho do not appear to change significantly. We also investigate the effect of changing the lattice volume from approximately (2 fm)^3 to (2.6 fm)^3. We find that the meson masses are consistent to within one standard deviation and baryon masses are consistent to within two standard deviations.

Abstract:We present 5 GHz high resolution VLA observations of 2,127 radio- and X-ray-emitting sources found in both the Green Bank (GB) 5 GHz radio catalog and the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). We report core flux densities and positions accurate to +/-0.5". Combined with the GB measuremens of the total radio emission, we derive the core-to-lobe ratio of objects in our sample and discuss their core-dominance relative to samples of radio galaxies and BL Lacertae objects. Our results show the ROSAT/GreenBank (RGB) sample is approximately an order of magnitude more core-dominated than the radio galaxy sample, but is more than an order of magnitude less core-dominated than highly beamed BL Lacertae object samples. Using simple beaming models, this indicates the typical object in the RGB catalog exhibits beamed radio emission and is oriented at a modest angle to the line-of-sight (theta ~ 25-30 degrees). The case of the origin of the X-ray emission is not as clear; the data are consistent with either an anisotropic unbeamed or moderately beamed X-ray component.

Abstract:Hadron masses are calculated in quenched lattice QCD in order to probe the scaling behavior of a novel fat-link clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators of the fermion action are constructed using APE-smeared links. Light quark masses corresponding to an m_pi / m_rho ratio of 0.35 are considered to assess the exceptional configuration problem of clover-fermion actions. This Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action provides scaling which is superior to mean-field improvement and offers advantages over nonperturbative improvement, including reduced exceptional configurations.
Preliminary Results for Light Hadron Masses from Lattice Qcd on Asymmetric Lattices

Abstract:Preliminary results for light hadron masses are presented from lattice QCD calculations on asymmetric lattices with improved actions. The used lattices have a fixed spatial lattice spacing as at 0.4fm, and a temporal lattice spacing at from 0.14 to 0.08fm. The discretization errors of a,, is reduced through improving actions at certain level. We find that masses of mesons have a weak at dependence, while the at dependence for baryons is more significant. Extrapolating to at = 0 limit, we obtain the mass of the nucleon, which has a 9% difference compared with the experimental value.

Abstract:We present an analysis of hadronic spectroscopy for Wilson valence quarks with dynamical staggered fermions at lattice coupling $6/g^2 = \beta=5.6$ at sea quark mass $am_q=0.01$ and 0.025, and of Wilson valence quarks in quenched approximation at $\beta=5.85$ and 5.95, both on $16^3 \times 32$ lattices. We make comparisons with our previous results with dynamical staggered fermions at the same parameter values but on $16^4$ lattices doubled in the temporal direction.

Abstract:We present a study of ${\cal O}(2000)$ (quenched) lattice configurations from the APE collaboration, for $6.0\le\beta\le 6.4$ using both the Wilson and the SW-Clover fermion action. We determine the light hadronic spectrum and meson decay constants. We extract the inverse lattice spacing using data at the simulated values of the quark mass. We find an agreement with the experimental data of $\sim 5%$ for mesonic masses and $\sim 10%-15%$ for baryonic masses and pseudoscalar decay constants. A larger deviation is present for the vector decay constants.

Heavy-light quark systems from the QCD instanton vacuum: $N_f=1$ light flavor case

Abstract:We investigate heavy-light quark systems within the framework of the QCD instanton vacuum, focusing on the $N_f = 1$ light flavor case. We derive an effective heavy-light quark interaction from the low-energy QCD partition function and construct a heavy-meson effective Lagrangian. The physical residual mass of heavy mesons, $\Lambda$, is determined by employing compositeness and normalization conditions. We calculate the masses of $D$ and $B$ mesons and their weak decay constants to the leading order and next-to-leading order in the $1/m_Q$ expansion. The current results for $f_D$ and $f_B$ are in good agreement with recent lattice QCD data and PDG average values.

Abstract:We present a systematic study of the effectiveness of light quark mass reweighting. This method allows a single lattice QCD ensemble, generated with a specific value of the dynamical light quark mass, to be used to determine results for other, nearby light dynamical quark masses. We study two gauge field ensembles generated with 2+1 flavors of dynamical domain wall fermions with light quark masses m_l=0.02 (m_\pi=620 MeV) and m_l=0.01 (m_\pi=420 MeV). We reweight each ensemble to determine results which could be computed directly from the other and check the consistency of the reweighted results with the direct results. The large difference between the 0.02 and 0.01 light quark masses suggests that this is an aggressive application of reweighting as can be seen from fluctuations in the magnitude of the reweighting factor by four orders of magnitude. Never-the-less, a comparison of the reweighed topological charge, average plaquette, residual mass, pion mass, pion decay constant, and scalar correlator between these two ensembles shows agreement well described by the statistical errors. The issues of the effective number of configurations and finite sample size bias are discussed. An examination of the topological charge distribution implies that it is more favorable to reweight from heavier mass to lighter quark mass.

Abstract: We critically review the validity of heavy-quark spin and flavor symmetries in heavy-light decay constants, form factors and effective couplings obtained within a nonperturbative framework, the ingredients of which are all motivated by Dyson-Schwinger equations studies of QCD. Along the way, we make new predictions for two effective nonphysical couplings: g_{DsDK} = 24.1+2.5/-1.6 and g_{BsBK} = 33.3+4.0/-3.7.

Hadronic physics from a Wilson fermion mixed-action approach: charm quark mass and meson decay constants

Abstract:We present our first set of results for charm physics, using the mixed-action setup introduced in a companion paper [1]. Maximally twisted Wilson valence fermions are used on a sea of non-perturbatively O ( a )-improved Wilson fermions, made up by CLS ensembles. Our charm-sector observables are free from discretisation effects, without need of tuning any improvement coefficient, and show continuum-limit scaling properties consistent with leading cutoff effects of . We consider a subset of CLS ensembles – including four values of the lattice spacing and pion masses down to 200 MeV – allowing to take the continuum limit and extrapolate to the physical pion mass. A number of techniques are incorporated in the analysis in order to estimate the systematic uncertainties of our results for the charm quark mass and the -meson decay constants. This first study of observables in the charm sector, where the emphasis has been on the control of the methodology, demonstrates the potential of our setup to achieve high-precision results.

Abstract:We compute the radial distributions of the scalar, vector and axial charge density in the heavy-light mesons. We present the results obtained for both the lowest lying static heavy-light mesons as well as for their nearest excitations, with $N_f=2$ dynamical quarks of Wilson (Clover) type. We used various improvements of the static heavy-quark actions. From these distributions we were able to compute the corresponding charges and their radii $< r^2>$, the results of which are also presented.

Abstract:We simulate lattice quantum chromodynamics on asymmetric lattices with improved actions, where quenching approximation is used. These lattices have a spatial lattice spacing a. at 0.3 and 0.4 fm, and a temporal lattice spacing at from 0.14 to 0.08 fm. The lattice spacing error due to a, is greatly reduced through improving both quark and gluon actions at a certain level. We find that masses of mesons have weak dependence on both lattice spacings, while the a(s) and a(t) dependence for baryons is more significant. With suitable modelling of these dependences, we are able to obtain the nucleon mass in agreement with the experiment.
