Abstract:We present a first scaling test of twisted mass QCD with pure Wilson quarks for a twisting angle of pi/2. We have computed the vector meson mass and the pseudoscalar decay constant for different values of beta at fixed value of r_0 m_PS. The results obtained in the quenched approximation are compared with data for pure Wilson and non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson computations. We show that our results from Wilson twisted mass QCD show clearly reduced lattice spacing errors, consistent with O(a) improvement and without the need of any improvement terms added. These results thus provide numerical evidence of the prediction in ref. [1].

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to achieve O(a) improvement in Wilson fermions by using twisted - mass quantum chromodynamics (tmQCD), while avoiding the small - eigenvalue and phase - transition problems that occur in traditional methods. Specifically: 1. **Reducing lattice - spacing effects**: The paper explores how, without adding improvement terms, by choosing a specific twist angle (such as π/2), to achieve O(a) improvement of physical observables, thereby significantly reducing the linear lattice - spacing error. 2. **Preventing the appearance of small eigenvalues**: The traditional Wilson fermion method is prone to produce very small eigenvalues at low quark masses, leading to difficulties in numerical simulations. The method proposed in the paper can effectively prevent this from happening. 3. **Avoiding phase - transition problems**: In dynamic quark simulations, when using non - perturbative improved Wilson fermions and Wilson gauge actions, a first - order phase transition occurs, making the simulation very difficult. The method proposed in the paper can avoid this phase - transition problem. To verify these theoretical predictions, the author carried out scaling tests of vector meson masses and pseudoscalar decay constants and compared the results with those of standard Wilson fermions and non - perturbative improved clover fermions. The results show that the method using twisted - mass Wilson fermions can indeed significantly reduce lattice - spacing effects and also shows smaller errors in higher - order a effects. ### Formula summary - Twisted - mass action: \[ S_F[\psi, \bar{\psi}]=\int d^4x\bar{\psi}(D_\mu\gamma_\mu + m_0 + i\mu_q\gamma_5\tau_3)\psi \] - Axial transformation: \[ \psi'=\exp(i\omega\gamma_5\tau_3 / 2)\psi,\quad\bar{\psi}'=\bar{\psi}\exp(i\omega\gamma_5\tau_3 / 2) \] - Mass - parameter transformation: \[ m'_0 = m_0\cos(\omega)+\mu_q\sin(\omega),\quad\mu'_q=-m_0\sin(\omega)+\mu_q\cos(\omega) \] - Standard Wilson - Dirac operator: \[ D_W=\frac{1}{2}\left\{\gamma_\mu(\nabla^*_\mu+\nabla_\mu)-ar\nabla^*_\mu\nabla_\mu\right\} \] - PCVC relationship: \[ \partial^*_\mu V^\mu_\alpha=-2\mu_q\epsilon_{3\alpha\beta}P_\beta \] Through these formulas and experimental results, the paper demonstrates the potential of twisted - mass quantum chromodynamics in reducing lattice - spacing effects, providing a theoretical basis for more accurate numerical simulations in the future.
