Abstract:Objective: The accuracies of three-dimensional (3D) printed dental models using various digital light processing (DLP) and stereolithography (SLA) printers at different thicknesses were compared. Materials and methods: Based on digital dental models (originally digitized using R700; 3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark), physical dental models were printed using three types of DLP printers: (1) EvoDent (UnionTec, Shanghai, China) with layer thicknesses of 50 μm and 100 μm; (2) EncaDent (Encashape, WuXi, China) with layer thicknesses of 20, 30, 50 and 100 μm; (3) Vida HD (Envisioned, Dearborn, MI, USA) with layer thicknesses of 50 and 100 μm. Models with the SLA printer Form 2 (Formlabs, Somerville, MA, USA) were printed with layer thicknesses of 25, 50 and 100 μm. All 22 printed models were converted to digital dental models using a D2000 model scanner (3 Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) and compared three-dimensionally to the source files using Geomagic Qualify 12.0 (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC, USA). Results: The printing accuracy of all printers was higher at 50 μm. When the layer thickness was set at 100 μm, the printing speed and printing accuracy of DLP printer were both superior to those of the SLA printer. In all groups, the EvoDent 50 μm group had the highest consistency with the source files (mean absolute deviation of 0.0233 mm in the maxilla and 0.0301 mm in the mandible). While the accuracy of Form 2 100 μm group was the lowest (mean absolute deviation of 0.0511 mm in the maxilla and 0.0570 mm in the mandible). Conclusion: For the 3D printers studied, 50 μm was the optimum layer thickness for DLP technology, and the printing accuracy using SLA technology increased with decreasing layer thickness. The DLP technology also had higher printing accuracy at a layer thickness of 100 μm. EvoDent 50 μm had the highest and Form 2 100 μm the lowest printing accuracy.

Abstract:Background: The study's objective was to assess the accuracy (trueness and precision) of orthodontic models obtained from crowded and spaced dentition finalized for the production of clear aligners. Four 3D printers featuring different technologies and market segments were used for this purpose. Methods: Two digital master models were obtained from two patients featuring respectively crowded dentition (CM group) and diastema/edentulous spaces (DEM group). The 3D printers tested were: Form 3B (SLA technology, medium-professional segment), Vector 3SP (SLA technology, industrial segment), Asiga Pro 4K65 (DLP technology, high-professional segment), and Anycubic Photon M3 (LCD technology, entry-level segment). Each 3D printed model was scanned and superimposed onto the reference master model and digital deviation analysis was performed to assess the trueness and precision calculated as root mean square (RMS). All data were statistically examined to obtain intra-group and inter-groups comparisons(p 0.05). Results: In both CM and DEM groups, SLA 3D printers (Vector 3SP and Form 3B) showed lower trueness error compared to DLP/LCD technologies (Asiga Pro 4K65, Anycubic Photon M3) (p < 0.001). In general, the entry-level printer (Anycubic Photon M3) showed the greatest trueness error (p < 0.001). Comparing CM and DEM models generated with the same 3D printer, statistically significant differences were found only for Asiga Pro 4k65 and Anycubic Photon M3 printers (p > 0.05). Concerning data of precision, the DLP technology (Asiga Pro 4k65) showed lower error compared to the other 3D printers tested. The trueness and precision errors were within the accepted clinical error for clear aligner manufacturing (< 0.25 mm), with the entry-level 3D printer nearly reaching this value. Conclusions: The accuracy of orthodontic models generated for clear aligners can be affected by different 3D printer technologies and anatomical characteristics of dental arches.

Accuracy of digital light processing printing of 3-dimensional dental models

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to investigate whether a digital light processing (DLP) printer could perform efficiently and with adequate accuracy for clinical applications when used with different settings and variations in the orientation of models on the build plate. Methods: Digital impressions of the oral environment were collected from 15 patients. Subsequently, digital impressions were used to make 3-dimensional printed models using the DLP printing technique. Three variables of the printing technique were tested: placement on the build plate (middle vs corner), thickness in the z-axis (50 microns vs 100 microns), and hollow vs solid shell. After being printed with different printing techniques and orientations on the same printer, a total of 240 maxillary and mandibular arches were measured. These variables generated 8 printing combinations. Tooth and arch measurements on each model type were compared with each other. Intraobserver reliability of the repeated measurement error was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient. Results: All mean differences among the printing variations were statistically insignificant. The Bland-Altman plots verified a high degree of agreement among all model sets and printing variations. In addition, the measurements were highly reproducible; this was demonstrated by the high intraclass correlation coefficient for all measurements recorded. Conclusions: The DLP printer produced clinically acceptable models in all areas of the build plate, with hollow and solid model shells, and at its high-speed setting of 100 microns. The applications of the DLP printer tested should be a viable option for printing in a clinical environment at a high-speed setting while filling the build plate and printing with less resin.
Comparison of dimensional accuracy between direct-printed and thermoformed aligners

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the dimensional accuracy between thermoformed and direct-printed aligners.Methods: Three types of aligners were manufactured from the same reference standard tessellation language (STL) file: thermoformed aligners were manufactured using Zendura FLXTM (n = 12) and Essix ACETM (n = 12), and direct-printed aligners were printed using Tera HarzTM TC-85DAP 3D Printer UV Resin (n = 12). The teeth were not manipulated with any tooth-moving software in this study. The samples were sprayed with an opaque scanning spray, scanned, imported to Geomagic® Control XTM metrology software, and superimposed on the reference STL file by using the best-fit alignment algorithm. Distances between the aligner meshes and the reference STL file were measured at nine anatomical landmarks.Results: Mean absolute discrepancies in the Zendura FLXTM aligners ranged from 0.076 ± 0.057 mm to 0.260 ± 0.089 mm and those in the Essix ACETM aligners ranged from 0.188 ± 0.271 mm to 0.457 ± 0.350 mm, while in the direct-printed aligners, they ranged from 0.079 ± 0.054 mm to 0.224 ± 0.041 mm. Root mean square values, representing the overall trueness, ranged from 0.209 ± 0.094 mm for Essix ACETM, 0.188 ± 0.074 mm for Zendura FLXTM, and 0.140 ± 0.020 mm for the direct-printed aligners.Conclusions: This study showed greater trueness and precision of direct-printed aligners than thermoformed aligners.

Effect of 3D printer, implant analog and angulation on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the accumulative effect of 3D printer, implant analog systems, and implant angulation on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts. Methods: A reference cast, presenting a case of a three-unit implant-supported prosthesis, was scanned with a coordinate measurement machine, producing the first reference data set (CMM, n = 1). The second reference data set (n = 10) was prepared using an intraoral scanner (IOS) (Trios4). Test quadrant casts were produced using three DLP type 3D printers, Max (MAX UV385), Pro (PRO 4K65 UV), and Nex (NextDent 5100), and three implant analog systems, El (Elos), Nt (Nt-trading), and St (Straumann) (n = 90). Stone casts were also produced via analog impressions (Stone, n = 10). After digitization, the accuracy of 3D distance, local angulation (angle between implants) and global angulation (angle between the implant center axis and an axis perpendicular to the global plane) was evaluated by comparing the reference (CMM, IOS), test (3D print), and control (Stone) groups using metrology software. Data were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey`s tests (α = 0.05). Results: IOS was truer in 3D implant distance and more precise in capturing local angulation than Stone (p ≤ 0.05). Other measurements were similar between both groups (p > 0.05). The amount of error introduced in the workflow by IOS and 3D printing was mostly similar (p > 0.05). 3D printed casts had similar or even higher accuracy than Stone group (p > 0.05). In most cases, higher trueness was achieved when using PRO 4K65 UV 3D printer and Elos implant analog system (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: 3D printer, implant analog system, and implant angulation have a significant effect on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts. Limited-span implant-supported cases could be reproduced digitally with similar accuracy as conventional methods. Clinical significance: A fully digital workflow with a carefully selected 3D printer and implant analog system can increase the accuracy of digitally produced implant casts with comparable accuracy to conventional workflow.

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the impact of printer technology and print orientation on the accuracy of directly printed retainers. Materials and methods: Digital retainers were printed with two different printing technologies: digital light processing (DLP) and stereolithography (SLA), using two different orientations: 0° and 90°. After printing, the retainers (n = 40) were scanned using cone-beam computed tomography. The DICOM files were then converted into standard tessellation language (STL) files. Comparison of the printed retainers with a master file was done by superimposition using a three-dimensional (3D) best-fit tool in Geomagic software. A ±0.25 mm tolerance was set to detect differences between the superimposed files. Statistical analysis was conducted (Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests, with Bonferroni correction). Results: The lowest median average deviation was observed for the DLP horizontally printed models (median, [interquartile range (IQR)] = 0.01 mm, [-0.01, 0.02]) followed by the SLA horizontally printed retainers (median, [IQR] = 0.05 mm, [0.03, 0.07]). The highest median inside the tolerance levels ratio was observed for the horizontally SLA printed retainers (median, [IQR] = 78.9%, [74.4, 82.4%]) followed by the horizontally DLP printed retainers (median, [IQR] = 78.2%, [74.5, 80.7%]). Conclusions: Both technologies (DLP and SLA) showed 3D printed results compatible with orthodontic clinical needs. Printing orientation was more important than printer type regarding its accuracy. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the accuracy of direct printed appliances clinically.
Accuracy evaluation of 3D-printed dental models used for the fabrication of clear aligners in mild malocclusions

Abstract:Objective:The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy and feasibility of three-dimensional(3D)printing dental models based on Digital Light Processing (DLP)used for the fabrication of clear aligners in mild malocclusions.Methods:Twenty patients with different types of simple irregularities were selected and intra-oral scanned for the digital dental models with 3shape Trios. The 3shape Ortho Analyzer software was used to setup the digital models and the tooth movement staging. The step model data were derived for 3D printing and aligner fabrication. Eighty-five upper and lower jaw dentition digital models and 3D-printed models were compared digitally or manually with the selected corresponding crown height, crown width, arch width and length measurements to test the consistency and accuracy of the 3D-printed model. The intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC)was used to evaluate the reliability of the two measurement methods.Paired t tests were used to detect significant differences in the measurements between the 3D-printed models and the original digital models.Results:The intraclass correlation coefficients for all the comparisons made between the 3D replicas and the original digital models were greater than 0.95. This indicated an excellent agreement. No statistically significant differences could be detected between the 3D-printed models and their corresponding digital models except for crown height measurements. The overall difference was ranging from (-0.01±0.12) mm to (0.11±0.31) mm.Conclusions:The accuracy of the 3D models produced by the DLP techniques at 10μm layer heights for the fabrication of clear aligners in mild malocclusions was clinically acceptable.

Abstract:Treatment with vitamin K antagonists is associated with variability of the effect of these drugs on the hemostatic system [1]. Patients may require very different doses to reach the same INR, and the INR as well as the required dose may also vary over time in an individual patient. In a previous paper we investigated the intraindividual variation of the INR in stabilized patients monitored with Hepato Quick, which is a combined rabbit thromboplastin [2]. This reagent, containing adsorbed bovine plasma as a source of factor (F) V and fibrinogen, has been designed to respond to factors VII, X and II only. We found that patients treated with the short-acting acenocoumarol had a greater mean intraindividual CV of the INR than patients treated with the long-acting phenprocoumon. This observation might be explained by a greater variation of the concentration of FVII in patients treated with acenocoumarol in comparison to that in patients treated with phenprocoumon [3]. If all thromboplastin reagents have the same response to variation of the concentration of the vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors, the INR intraindividual variation may be expected to be independent of the thromboplastin used for monitoring of the patients. The total intraindividual variation is determined by preanalytical, analytical and biological variation. The purpose of the present communication is to assess the total intraindividual variation of the INR in stabilized patients monitored with Innovin (SiemensHealthcareDiagnostics Products,Marburg, Germany), which is a recombinant human thromboplastin. Using the total and analytical variation we could calculate the biological variation. For this purpose we performed a retrospective analysis of INRs determined in outpatients treated with phenprocoumon or acenocoumarol under the supervision of the Thrombosis Service of Amersfoort, the Netherlands. The design of the study and the method of selection of patients was exactly the same as that of our previous study using Hepato Quick. Two different therapeutic ranges were applied (i.e. INR 2.0–3.5 (low intensity) and INR 2.5–4.0 (high intensity)). Patients were included in our analysis if they fulfilled the following criteria: treatment period was 6 months or longer; the dose of VKA drug was not changed; at least six consecutive INRs were within the patient s therapeutic range; the interval between consecutive INR measurements was 2 weeks or longer; and there were no changes in conditions that may influence the INR, such as intercurrent diseases, invasive procedures, or starting or stopping drugs interacting with phenprocoumon or acenocoumarol. Each selected patient was included for a single period of stable anticoagulation. If there were multiple stable periods in the same patient, the most recent one was chosen. Patients files were viewed in alphabetical order of their surnames and patients meeting the abovementioned criteria were included until the required number of 75 patients in each of four groups was achieved. All prothrombin times were measured by one laboratory using the reagent Innovin and a Sysmex CA-7000 coagulation instrument (Sysmex Corporation, Kobe, Japan). Prothrombin times were converted to INRs using the International Sensitivity Index (ISI) provided by the manufacturer. Between-day analytical imprecision of the INR was determined using the results of the laboratory s participation in a national external quality assessment scheme organized by the Netherlands Foundation for Quality Control of Medical Laboratory Diagnostics (SKML). In this scheme, lyophilized plasmas obtained from patients on VKA-therapy were provided to the participants for INR determination. Because each external control plasma was analyzed in multiple surveys, we could calculate the between-day imprecision (CVI) for our laboratory. The CVI of the INR in our laboratory was approximately 1.7%. For each selected patient the total coefficient of variation (CVT) was calculated for the consecutive INRmeasurements as described above. Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate how implant analog design and printing layer thickness affect the linear and angular accuracy of implant analogs in additively manufactured casts, comparing with conventional implant analogs in stone casts. Material and methods: A reference cobalt chromium mandibular model with a single implant was digitized with an industrial optical scanner and scan bodies compatible with a pressure/friction fit (S) or a screw-retained (N) implant analog for direct digital workflow. These scans were used to fabricate casts with 50 μm (S-50 and N-50) and 100 μm (S-100 and N-100) layer thickness (n=10). Ten stone casts were made after single-step closed-tray polyvinylsiloxane impressions of the model (CNV). All casts were digitized with the same metal scan body and scanner used to digitize the master model, and these scans were superimposed over the scan of the master model to measure the linear (x, y, and z-axes) and angular (XY and YZ planes) deviations (Geomagic Control X). The precision of measured deviations was defined with the average deviation values. Generalized linear model analysis was used to compare the deviations within implant analogs for direct digital workflow, while 1-way analysis of variance and Dunnett's test were used to compare these analogs and conventional analogs (α = .05) Results. The analog design affected the linear deviations (y-axis), while the interaction between the analog design and the layer thickness, and the analog design affected the angular deviations (XY plane, P ≤ .030). S analogs had lower linear and angular deviations than N analogs, and S-50 led to lower angular deviations than N-50 (P ≤ .030). CNV led to higher linear accuracy (y-axis) than N-50, N-100, and S-100 and led to lower angular deviations than all test groups (XY plane) (P ≤ .025). Conclusions: The analogs in S-50 casts had positional trueness similar to or higher than those in other test groups and their accuracy was mostly similar to those in CNV casts. Implant analogs for direct digital workflow deviated more towards lingual and gingival, and conventional analogs deviated more towards buccal, occlusal, and distal. All analogs had a tendency to tilt towards lingual and distal.
Effect of the Height of a 3D-Printed Model on the Force Transmission and Thickness of Thermoformed Orthodontic Aligners

Abstract:This research aims to investigate the influence of model height employed in the deep drawing of orthodontic aligner sheets on force transmission and aligner thickness. Forty aligner sheets (Zendura FLX) were thermoformed over four models of varying heights (15, 20, 25, and 30 mm). Normal contact force generated on the facial surface of the upper right central incisor (Tooth 11) was measured using pressure-sensitive films. Aligner thickness around Tooth 11 was measured at five points. A digital caliper and a micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) were employed for thickness measurements. The normal contact force exhibited an uneven distribution across the facial surface of Tooth 11. Model 15 displayed the highest force (88.9 ± 23.2 N), while Model 30 exhibited the lowest (45.7 ± 15.8 N). The force distribution was more favorable for bodily movement with Model 15. Thickness measurements revealed substantial thinning of the aligner after thermoforming. This thinning was most pronounced at the incisal edge (50% of the original thickness) and least at the gingivo-facial part (85%). Additionally, there was a progressive reduction in aligner thickness with increasing model height, which was most significant on the facial tooth surfaces. We conclude that the thermoplastic aligner sheets undergo substantial thinning during the thermoforming process, which becomes more pronounced as the height of the model increases. As a result, there is a decrease in both overall and localized force transmission, which could lead to increased tipping by the aligner and a diminished ability to achieve bodily movement.

Dimensional accuracy and surface characteristics of complete-arch cast manufactured by six 3D printers

Abstract:Objective: This in vitro study aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate and compare the horizontal and vertical accuracies of complete-arch casts produced by six 3D printers with different printing principles and resolutions using a low-viscosity resin material. Methods: A reference cast was designed by CAD software. The 3D printers used were DLPa (Asiga MAX), DLPk (cara Print 4.0), LCD2o (Ondemand 2 K Printer), LCD2p (Photon Mono X), LCD4s (SONIC 4 K), and SLA (ZENITH U). Ten casts were printed for each 3D printer using a low-viscosity resin. The accuracy of each printed cast was evaluated using shell-to-shell deviations, 12 linear, one angular, and five height deviations, with a reference cast as the control. The surface features of the casts were examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and digital cameras. Results: The evaluation of shell-to-shell deviation revealed that DLPa and SLA printers exhibited low trueness values, whereas LCD printers displayed high trueness values. Among the LCD printers, LCD4s and LCD2o exhibited the lowest and highest trueness values, respectively. DLPa printers showed lower trueness values for intercanine and intermolar distances, whereas LCD printers generally demonstrated high trueness values. However, LCD4s exhibited similar trueness values to those of SLA and DLPk. The height deviation was smallest in the anterior area, whereas the largest height deviation occurred in the canine teeth. The surface characteristics indicated that the SLA casts had greater light reflection and blunt canine tips. The FE-SEM observations highlighted that the LCD and DLP printers exhibited varying layer characteristics, with some presenting rough and uneven borders in the anterior lingual area. Significance: The accuracy of 3D printed casts varied among the 3D printer groups: DLPa and SLA were accurate for shell-to-shell deviation, with DLPa being the most accurate for linear and angular deviations. Regardless of the XY resolution, the DLP printers outperformed the LCD printers. Among the LCD group of 3D printers, higher-resolution LCD4s demonstrated increased accuracy. The SLA exhibited soft layer borders in the FE-SEM owing to its laser spot characteristics and prominent light reflection in the digital camera images.

Abstract:Abstract Background/Objectives Direct-printed aligners have proven to be more cost effective and accurate. However, the post-curing process might affect their dimensional accuracy, leading to unwanted tooth movement. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of different post-curing durations on the location specific accuracy of direct-printed aligners. Method A stereolithography printer was used to produce 30 aligners using Dental LT V2 resin. The aligners were randomly assigned into 3 groups ( n = 10 each) according to different post-ultraviolet light-curing durations: 0 min (No cure); 40 min or 60 min. The aligners in each group were then scanned and superimposed on certain landmarks to check for location specific deviations using a best fit algorithm. Discrepancies were assessed at 10 different points by one examiner at two different time intervals (0.25 mm was the clinically acceptable threshold limit). One way ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA were applied for statistical analysis. Results Deviations were maximum in the ‘No cure’ group but were statistically insignificant ( p -value > 0.05). The deviation values in the ‘40 and 60 min cure’ groups were comparable and statistically significant ( p -value < 0.05), with maximum deviation noted in the anterior region. All values in the ‘40 and 60 min cure’ groups were within the clinically acceptable range. Conclusion Post-print ultraviolet light curing is a crucial step to ensure the rigidity of the direct-printed aligner. However, increasing the duration of light curing has little effect on aligner accuracy.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objectives To determine the impact of build orientation, increased layer thickness, and dental crowding on the trueness of three-dimensional (3D)–printed models, and to evaluate how these parameters affect the fit of thermoformed appliances. Materials and Methods Ninety-six dental models were printed horizontally and vertically on the building platform using different 3D-printing technologies: (1) a stereolithography (SLA) printer with layer thicknesses of 160 μm and 300 μm and (2) a digital light processing (DLP) printer with layer thicknesses of 100 μm and 200 μm. Each printed model was digitalized and superimposed on the corresponding source file using 3D rendering software, and deviations were quantified by the root mean square values. Subsequently, a total of 32 thermoformed appliances were fabricated on top of the most accurate 3D-printed models, and their fit was evaluated by digital superimposition and inspection by three blinded orthodontists. Paired t-tests were used to analyze the data. Results Significant differences (P < .05) between printing technologies used were identified for models printed horizontally, with the SLA system achieving better trueness, especially in crowded dentitions. No significant differences between technology were found when models were printed vertically. The highest values of deviation were recorded in appliances fabricated on top of DLP-printed models. The results of the qualitative evaluation indicated that appliances fabricated on top of SLA models outperformed the DLP-modeled appliances. Conclusions Three-dimensional printing with increased layer height seems to produce accurate working models for orthodontic applications.

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Altering the internal design of 3-dimensionally (3D) printed dental casts may help to reduce material and time consumption. However, it remains unclear whether such changes would compromise the accuracy of the casts. Further research is also needed to determine the optimal internal design that would maximize printing accuracy.PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the impact of internal design on the accuracy (trueness and precision) of 3D printed dental casts fabricated by stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) technology.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A reference digital cast was obtained by scanning a maxillary typodont with an intraoral scanner to create 4 types of internal designs, including hollow interior with perforated base (HWB), hollow interior without base (HB), all solid (S), and internal support structure with perforated base (SWB). Digital casts with different internal designs were printed by two 3D printers with different technologies (SLA and DLP). The printed casts were scanned by a desktop scanner to obtain standard tessellation language (STL) format research digital casts. All reference and research digital casts were imported into a software program for comparison and analysis of accuracy. Differences between the reference and research digital casts were quantitatively indicated by the root mean square (RMS) value. The Kruskal-Wallis 1-way ANOVA was used to test significant differences between the different internal design types and the Mann-Whitney U test was used to test significant differences between the two 3D printers (α=.05).RESULTS: The Kruskal-Wallis 1-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in the trueness and precision of different internal design types (all P<.001) for casts printed by both 3D printers. The trueness and precision were significantly worse for the HB design than for the other design types for casts printed by both 3D printers (all P<.05). Regardless of the design type, the trueness was significantly better for casts printed by the SLA-based printer than for casts printed by the DLP-based printer (all P<.05). The precision was significantly worse for casts printed by the SLA-based printer than for casts printed by the DLP-based printer (all P<.05).CONCLUSIONS: The internal design may affect the accuracy of 3D printing. The base is necessary to ensure the accuracy of 3D printed dental casts, whereas the internal support structure did not affect the accuracy of 3D printed dental casts. An all-solid design led to higher precision, but not higher trueness. Dental casts printed with SLA technology have higher trueness and lower precision than those printed with DLP technology.

Abstract:Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy in terms of trueness and precision of 3 different liquid crystal display (LCD) printers with different cost levels. Methods Three LCD 3-dimensional (3D) printers were categorized into tiers 1-3 on the basis of cost level. The printers' accuracies were assessed in terms of trueness and precision. For this research, 10 standard tessellation language (STL) reference files were used. For trueness, each STL file was printed once with each 3D printer. For precision, 1 randomly chosen STL file was printed 10 times with each 3D printer. After that, a model scanner was used to scan the models, and STL comparisons were performed using reverse engineering software. For the measurements regarding trueness and precision, the Friedman test was used. Results There were significant differences among the 3 printers ( P <0.05). The trueness and precision error were lower in models printed with a tier-1 printer than in the remaining 3D printers ( P <0.05). The tier-2 and -3 printers presented very similar performance. Conclusions LCD 3D printers can be accurately used in orthodontics for model printing depending on the specific orthodontic use. The cost of a printer is relevant to the results only for the higher expense of the 3D printer in this study.

Abstract:Background. Recently, dentists can utilize three-dimensional printing technology in fabricating dental restoration. However, to date, there is a lack of evidence regarding the effect of printing layer thicknesses and postprinting on the mechanical properties of the 3D-printed temporary restorations with the additive manufacturing technique. So, this study evaluated the mechanical properties of a 3D-printed dental resin material with different printing layer thicknesses and postprinting methods. Methods. 210 specimens of a temporary crown material (A2 EVERES TEMPORARY, SISMA, Italy) were 3D-printed with different printing layer thicknesses (25, 50, and 100 μm). Then, specimens were 3D-printed using DLP technology (EVERES ZERO, DLP 3D printer, SISMA, Italy) which received seven different treatment conditions after printing: water storage for 24 h or 1 month, light curing or heat curing for 5 or 15 minutes, and control. Flexural properties were evaluated using a three-point bending test on a universal testing machine (ISO standard 4049). The Vickers hardness test was used to evaluate the microhardness of the material system. The degree of conversion was measured using an FT-IR ATR spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was performed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test ( p ≤ 0.05 ). Results. The 100 μm printing layer thickness had the highest flexural strength among the other thickness groups. As a combined effect printing thickness and postprinting conditions, the 100 μm with the dry storage group has the highest flexural strength among the tested groups (94.60 MPa). Thus, the group with 100 μm thickness that was heat cured for 5 minutes (HC 5 min 100 μm) has the highest VHN value ( VHN = 17.95 ). Also, the highest mean DC% was reported by 50 μm layer thickness (42.84%).Conclusions. The thickness of the 100 μm printing layer had the highest flexural strength compared to the 25 μm and 50 μm groups. Also, the postprinting treatment conditions influenced the flexural strength and hardness of the 3D-printed resin material.
