Abstract:In this paper, we study a nano CaO-based CO2 adsorbent obtained from a nano CaCO3 precursor by calcination. Nano CaO-based CO 2 adsorbents possess special features that underline their potential use in circulating fluidized beds coal gasification. A fixed fluid bed reactor was used to evaluate the target adsorbent, which was then analyzed using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer. The following properties were observed from the adsorbent produced: (1) lower carbonation and regeneration temperatures. This means energy savings in the CaCO3 regeneration looping system; (2) faster reaction rate with CO2. As such, the adsorbent meets the fast reaction needs of CFB systems; (3) higher sorption capacity of CO2, especially in fast reaction, and lower decay of sorption capacity; and (4) lower attrition loss during the looping process. Overall, the observed properties demonstrate the applicability of nano CaO-based CO2 adsorbents in CFB coal gasification and reactive sorption enhanced reforming.

Abstract:This work is devoted to studying the adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium N-lauryl sarcosinate (NLS) on activated carbons produced from hydrolytic lignin using laboratory and pilot setups. Commercially available activated carbons produced by "Sorbent" Ltd. and SKT-3 are used for comparison. The surface of the activated carbons is modified (hydrophilized) by cellulose sulfoacetate (CSA) adsorption from aqueous solutions. Amounts of surfactants adsorbed on the activated carbon surface are determined from their radioactivity using tritium-labeled compounds. It has been found that the maximum adsorption of anionic surfactants is higher on activated carbons obtained from lignin. Adsorption values in the saturation region are 1.7 and 1.5 mmol/g for SDS and NLS on activated carbons obtained from lignin and 0.8 mmol/g for both surfactants adsorbed on commercial carbons. It has been shown that the preliminary application of CSA does not affect the maximum adsorption of NLS at its high concentrations; however, it reduces its adsorption in the initial region of the isotherm. Adsorption of CSA and its ability to be retained on the surface of the activated carbons is also studied. Tritium-labeled CSA has been used to show that the isotherm of its adsorption on activated carbon obtained from lignin is S-shaped beginning from a concentration of 0.5 g/L and reaches a maximum value of 25 mg/g. In the presence of NLS, the polymer is desorbed from the carbon surface by more than 50%.

Abstract:Adsorption removal of SO 2 using activated carbons has attracted enormous attention due to its relatively low water consumption and environmental friendliness. The physisorption of SO 2 is regarded as the prerequisite step of SO 2 chemisorption (i.e., SO 2 reacting with oxygen and moisture in the flue gas). In this study, a series of carbonaceous model adsorbents (i.e., activated carbons, ACs) with various pore hierarchy degrees and similar surface chemistry were synthesized by simply regulating the conditions of catalytic activation. The physical and chemical characteristics of the ACs were elucidated by N 2 physisorption, XPS, TEM and SEM. Both dynamic breakthrough performances and isotherms of SO 2 adsorption on ACs were investigated, presenting a negative correlation between pore hierarchy and SO 2 saturated adsorption capacity. Compared with the fitting of semi-empirical isotherm models, classical molecular dynamic (MD) simulation can better demonstrate the spatial distribution and the local density of SO 2 molecules in nanopores of ACs with diameters <2 nm.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) possess a remarkable capacity to absorb SO 2 , and their recyclability makes them highly promising for various applications. To enhance both efficiency and cost-effectiveness, this research combined porous activated carbon (AC) with a synthesized DES, ethylene glycol (EG) -imidazole (Im) - methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (MTPB) (molar ratio 1:2:1). The effects of DES loading amount, space velocity, and flue gas flow rate on the SO 2 absorption performance were investigated systematically. Results showed that the DES/ACs are SO 2 high-performance adsorbents, particularly at high flue gas flow rates, achieving an optimal performance at a DES loading of 25%. Under conditions of 30 °C and a flow rate of 500 ml/min, the absorbent achieved an absorption rate of 0.066 g/g for low-concentration SO 2 (1000 ppm). Four kinetic models: the Bangham, Ho pseudo-second-order, Lagergren first-order, and McKay second-order are applied to investigate the SO 2 absorption dynamics. Both the Bangham and Ho models proved adept at predicting the SO 2 absorption behavior on the surface of DES/AC, which suggests the underlying mechanism to be a combination of surface reactions and micropore diffusion . Thermodynamic analysis indicates that the primary driving force for SO 2 absorption is the molar reaction enthalpy change. Hence, the DESs/AC absorbent shows great potential as a viable option for capturing SO 2 in contaminated gas.

Adsorption characteristics of SO2 onto novel activated carbon fixed bed: kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and washing regeneration

Abstract:The problem of SO2 pollution in industrial flue gas has brought great pressure to environmental governance. In this study, a new type of activated carbon fixed bed device was designed and built for flue gas desulfurization. The results showed that activated carbons (AC1-AC5) were microporous activated carbons with abundant functional groups on the surface, and the desulfurization performance was ranked as AC1 > AC2 > AC3 > AC4 > AC5. The specific surface area of AC1 was as high as 624.98 m2/g, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 29.03 mg·g-1 under the optimum reaction conditions. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm model and Bangham pore diffusion model are more suitable for describing the dynamic adsorption process of SO2 on AC1. Combined with thermodynamic research, it is shown that the adsorption process of SO2 is a spontaneous, exothermic, and chaotic reduction process, which is mainly a physical adsorption between single-layer adsorption and multi-layer adsorption. Finally, the desulfurization-washing regeneration cycle experiment results showed that the regeneration rate of AC1 increases with the washing time and washing temperature, up to 95%, which provides data reference for industrial application.

Abstract:The application background of vertical radial flow adsorber used in cryogenic air separation unit was discussed and working principle of dual-bed adsorption was analyzed.A numerical model to describe the heat and mass transfer process in the packed bed was established,revealing the influence law of dual-bed thickness arrangement on adsorption properties and penetration time.The result shows that carbon dioxide at the outlet must be monitored as the end of the reaction.Besides,with the total bed thickness as well as flow rate of the feed air remains constant,the dual-bed adsorber reaches its best performance when the thickness ratio of the two adsorbents is 0.3.

Abstract:Flue gas dry desulfurization using activated coke (AC) as an adsorbent is considered the most promising environmentally friendly technology in adsorbent circulation and sulfur resource recovery. This work studied the effect of SO2 as an activator on the physicochemical properties of carbon materials and discusses the influence of S doping on SO2 adsorption. The results indicate that elemental S is the main product of SO2 carbothermal reduction within the temperature range of 700–900 °C, with a yield ranging from 72% to 88.5%. Simultaneously, the pore structure of the AC was significantly developed, with a maximum specific surface area of 347.26 m2/g that was mainly composed of micropores. During the carbothermal reaction between SO2 and C, a large amount of S doping and the formation of thiophene and sulfur oxide functional groups were induced, which proved beneficial for the removal of SO2 through dynamic adsorption testing. Density functional theory calculations showed that the incorporation of S-containing functional groups changed the charge-distribution characteristics of the carbon surface, thereby strengthening the physisorption of SO2 and enhancing the chemisorption of unsaturated carbon. This study provides a new concept for AC desulfurization technology and describes process design and operation.

Abstract:With the application of high-sulfur coal and oxy-fuel combustion in power plants, the formation of SO3 in flue gas has strongly enhanced. Hence, the removal of SO3 has received growing attention. Within this context, SO3 sorption using calcium-based sorbents is an interesting approach. In this study, we analyzed the steps on a CaO surface and examined their influence on the adsorption of SO3 molecules using density function theory calculations. The results indicate that steps with O and Ca atoms at the edges are the most stable terminations and also the best terminations for SO3 adsorption. SO3 molecules bind to OCaO sites by SSO3 atoms and weak bonds between Ca and OSO3 are formed. At edge sites, the adsorption energy of SO3, SO2 and CO2 shows a remarkable increase compared to that on a flat surface, whereas it decreases at the top site nearby the edge. The adsorption energy of SO3 is also affected by the OCaO that interacts with SSO3 and the Ca near the OCaO. Interestingly, the SO3 adsorption energy can increase if an SO3, SO2 or CO2 molecule previously adsorbed at a neighboring site. SO3 adsorption is more stable than SO2 and CO2 absorption on step surface and has an advantage in competitive adsorption with SO2 or CO2. The calculation results thus indicate that the formation of a step surface could be an effective method to enhance SO3 sorption on calcium-based sorbents.
Understanding the adsorption behaviors of naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde in coal water slurry

Abstract:Naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde (NSF) has been widely used as a dispersant for coal water slurry (CWS) preparation. However, the adsorption behaviors of NSF on different components were scarcely discussed due to the complex nature of coal. In this study, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms of NSF on the particle surfaces of carbonaceous matter, kaolinite, quartz, pyrite were investigated, along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle meter were conducted to clarify the adsorption mechanism of NSF on each particle surface. The adsorption measurements showed that the saturated adsorption capacities of NSF on the surfaces of kaolinite, pyrite and carbonaceous matter were much higher than that of quartz. Further single-layer adsorption occurred for the NSF adsorbed by all particles except quartz, where multi-layer adsorption was observed. The XPS and contact angle results showed that the interaction between the hydrophobic tail of NSF and carbonaceous matter is mainly attributed to hydrophobic force, concurrently the combination of the hydrophilic groups in NSF with Al elements of kaolinite and Fe elements of pyrite. The findings are significant to elucidate the adsorption mechanism of dispersants on the coal-water interface and proposed a reference for dispersants utilization based on different coal components.

Abstract:Carbon-based sorbents have been regarded as the promising candidates for arsenic removal from coal-fired flue gas because of their large surface area and functionality. The effect mechanism of SO2 on As2O3 adsorption over the carbon surfaces was systemically investigated by density functional theory calculations. The results show that the As2O3 molecule can be adsorbed on the carbon surfaces vertically or horizontally. The adsorption energies of As2O3 on the pure carbon surfaces range from −45.47 to −497.74 kJ/mol. When the SO2 concentration is low, the presence of SO2 can facilitate the As2O3 adsorption because of the electronic effects caused by SO2. The adsorbed SO2 can significantly decrease the level of electrostatic potential of neighbor active sites. In addition, the charge distributions of unsaturated carbon atoms are changed after SO2 adsorption, making the carbon surfaces more active for As2O3 adsorption. The enhanced charge transfer between As2O3 and the carbon surfaces with SO2 results in the stronger As2O3 adsorption. However, higher concentration of SO2 could inhibit the As2O3 adsorption because SO2 competes with As2O3 for the active adsorption sites.

Abstract:The use of an activated carbon (AC) with high ash content (15.92%) for SO2 removal was investigated during adsorption-desorption cycles. Significant deterioration in both dynamic and equilibria adsorption processes during the cycles was observed. To investigate the causes of deactivation, SO2 temperature-programmed desorption (SO2-TPD) experiments were conducted. The results indicated that most of the stored sulfur-containing species were released in the form of SO2 when the temperature was below 400 degrees C. In addition to SO2 , traces of CO were detected, but higher temperatures were required for the abundant release of CO. A Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) experiment was used to investigate changes in the oxygen-containing groups, and the results confirmed the formation of stable C-O complexes. These formations were tentatively attributed to the CO precursor's occupation of active sites. Based on the formation of C-O complexes, two deactivation pathways in the cycles were proposed. The adsorption-desorption cycles also affected the AC ash. The formation of sulfur-containing species in the ash was confirmed through thermodynamic calculation and powder X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:s In pursuit of effective adsorption materials for malodorous gases such as H 2 S and to broaden the utilization avenues of lignin waste, this study employed the direct pyrolysis method to synthesize three types of alkali lignin graphitized carbons, namely C-800, KC-700, and KEC-700. Among them, KEC-700 exhibits a high specific surface area of 1672.9 m 2 /g, significantly superior H 2 S adsorption performance compared to other materials, an adsorption breakthrough time of up to 220 min, and a sulfur capacity of 67.1 mg/g. Structural analysis showed that the more oxygen-containing functional groups of lignin charcoal and the larger specific surface area facilitated the adsorption of H 2 S. After reaching adsorption saturation, the degree of graphitization of lignin carbon diminishes. The H 2 S adsorption products primarily manifest as elemental sulfur and sulfate within the pores of lignin carbon measuring less than 2 nm. Through thermal regeneration, the charcoal effectively eliminates the elemental sulfur adsorption product. Nevertheless, sulfate removal proved unsatisfactory, as the adsorption efficiency of KEC-700 following two thermal regenerations was approximately 41% of that observed for fresh samples.

Abstract:The adsorption of SO2 on ZL50 activated carbon was analyzed for various water vapor volume fractions in the flue gas for flue gas desulphurization.Several apparent adsorption kinetic models were used to predict the SO2 adsorption.The adsorption process best follows the Bangham model,then the Elovich model,the pseudo second order kinetic model,the pseudo first order kinetic model of Lagergren and then the intraparticle diffusion model.The results further indicate that the external gas film diffusion was not the rate-determining step and that the internal pore diffusion was not the only adsorption rate-determining step.The internal micropore diffusion was the most important rate-determining step without water vapor,while the rate-determining step with water vapor volume fractions of 0.04-0.20 was the surface reactions or a combination of the surface reactions and micropore diffusion.

Abstract:In this study, a commercial activated carbon was assessed as adsorbent for post-combustion CO2 capture. The breakthrough adsorption experiments were conducted in a fixed-bed column with simulated flue gas of 12% CO2. The effects of feed flow rate and adsorption pressure on breakthrough time and CO2 adsorption capacity were evaluated. The column efficiency was introduced to estimate the percentage of the utilization of the bed adsorbent capacity. At a higher flow rate, the breakthrough time, breakthrough capacity and column efficiency decreased. Conversely, increasing adsorption pressure was favorable to CO2 adsorption by the increase in breakthrough time, CO2 adsorption capacity and the column efficiency. During the experiments, temperature changes were detected at three positions inside the column to track the movement of breakthrough front.

Abstract:With the intention of separating benzene (C6H6) from indoor polluted air and collecting it in a cleaner way, it is promising of getting C6H6 adsorbed on activated carbon materials with outstanding physicochemical properties. In this study, how C6H6 is adsorbed over single-wall carbon materials and relevant adsorption processes are enhanced is thoroughly investigated via density functional theory (DFT). Especially, distinction between partial and whole effects of adsorbents on C6H6 adsorption, features of electron distribution across section of adsorption forms, and regulation mechanism of nonsteady-state adsorption for C6H6 are key points. According to calculation results, C6H6 molecules could be captured by pure single-wall carbon nanotube (CNT) through repulsive forces (quantified as 103.42 kJ/mol) from all quarters, which makes it stay in nonsteady-state adsorption forms and easily run into free state. Therefore, when external temperature increases from 0 to 300 K, molecular movement will be intense enough to help C6H6 break into another random positions instead of statistically remaining immobile. As for this problem, single-wall CNTs are modified through making defects and replacing some C atoms with N atoms, respectively. In this way, surficial electron distribution of modified adsorbents is regulated to tremendously cut down repulsive forces (quantified as 50.30 kJ/mol) and reverse nonsteady-state adsorption into near-equilibrium quasi-steady-state adsorption (single-side attraction near 100 kJ/mol). Therefore, this research would provide useful information for exploiting single-wall carbon materials as effective adsorbents of C6H6 in order to quickly achieve indoor air purification.

Abstract:In recent years, the separation and upgrading rare earth elements with an increased demand for these elements and their compounds is important. In this study, the adsorption of lanthanum from synthetic solution containing lanthanum is investigated using activated carbon developed from Dom peels that is activated by 10% HCl. Characterization techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to demonstrate the physical and chemical properties of the modified activated carbon. The batch absorption of La 3+ ion from simulated waste solutions using modified activated carbon was investigated. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies were investigated. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models and the isotherm data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm. The kinetic data obtained were analyzed using a pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intra particle diffusion equations. The experimental data fitted very well the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Abstract:The static state weight-adsorption method was used for studying the isothermal adsorption for CS_(2 )at 30,40,50 and 60℃on the four kinds of activated carbon. Several adsorption models proposed by Langmuir,Freundlich,Langmuir-Freundlich, Temkin,BET and D-R equation were used to account for the observed adsorption behavior. All these models were regressed by using the least square method and examined by mathematical statistics. Freundlich equation was found to reasonably describe the behavior for adsorbing CS_(2 ). The specific surface area and micropore volume of activated carbon could be regarded as two major factors for CS_(2) adsorption. Adsorption heat showed that adsorption of CS_(2) is mainly physical adsorption, and adsorption heat have logarithmic decrement with the increase of adsorption quantity.
Simulation Study for the Adsorption of Carbon Disulfide on Hydroxyl Modified Activated Carbon

Abstract:In this study, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations (GCMC) and molecular dynamics simulations (MD) were used to construct models of activated carbon with hydroxyl-modified hexachlorobenzene basic unit contents of 0%, 12.5%, 25%, 35% and 50%. The mechanism of adsorption of carbon disulfide (CS2) by hydroxyl-modified activated carbon was then studied. It is found that the introduction of hydroxyl functional groups will improve the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for carbon disulfide. As far as the simulation results are concerned, the activated carbon model containing 25% hydroxyl modified activated carbon basic units has the best adsorption performance for carbon disulfide molecules at 318 K and atmospheric pressure. At the same time, the changes in the porosity, accessible surface area of the solvent, ultimate diameter and maximum pore diameter of the activated carbon model also led to great differences in the diffusion coefficient of carbon disulfide molecules in different hydroxyl-modified activated carbons. However, the same adsorption heat and temperature had little effect on the adsorption of carbon disulfide molecules.

Abstract:Dynamical adsorption of CO2 in flue gas by fixed-bed was simulated by Aspen Adsorption to investigate the suitable mathematical model for CO2 adsorption by activated carbon and the solid adsorption process for regenerating CO2 using steam blowing. Comparison between simulative and experimental breakthrough curves showed that the simulation data with ideal adsorption solution-linear diver force (IAS-LDF) model was more coincident with experimental data than results of models using pure component adsorption or Particle MB model. A complete temperature swing adsorption model was established, and the fixed-bed was heated and cooled respectively by high-temperature steam and adsorbed flue gas. The effects of purge temperature, adsorption / desorption time on CO2 capture rate, product purity and energy consumption were analyzed. The results showed that the increase of purge temperature enhanced the capture rate significantly and raised energy consumption slightly, but had few effects on the product purity. When the purge temperature increased from 100 °C to 200 °C with the adsorption / desorption time of 2~4 min, the capture rate increased by 11.1%, the energy consumption increased by 13.9%, and the product purity increased by 1.7%. The increase of adsorption / desorption time greatly improved the product purity, but reduced the capture rate and increased the energy consumption obviously. When the adsorption / desorption time increased from 2 min to 4 min with the purge temperature of 100~200 °C, the product purity increased by 13.6%, the capture rate of CO2 decreased by 4.8%, and the energy consumption increased by 43.1%.

Abstract:Water vapor inevitably existed in most purification and industrial processes which greatly influenced the efficiency. To understand the adsorption behavior of water at molecular level was desirable to elucidate the experimental observations. The work herein addressed the water adsorption on lignite-based activated carbon with consideration of two structural factors: surface oxidation and pore size. The results revealed that graphitic carbon was energetic unfavorable to water that the adsorption amount was less, and water molecules preferentially adsorbed near the defects in the carbon surface. The introduction of carbonyl functionalities changed the hydrophilic property of carbon which greatly increased the adsorption capacity. Water molecules firstly bounded to the functional groups with the separation distance of 2.77–3.11 Å, and small clusters merged with their neighbors to form larger clusters. The average distance of water mass centers was about 2.93–3.13 Å. The pore size distribution had less effect on the adsorption amount of water molecules; however, it significantly limited the size of cluster at higher relatively pressure (p/p0 = 0.7–0.9) in largely oxidized models (O atomic% = 12%). The largest cluster was consisted of 24–28 and 38–41 water molecules in microporous and micro-/mesoporous model, respectively.
